We explore the importance of understanding doctrine. We talk about what it means to come into the presence of God. We look into what it means to be taken home to that God who gave them life, and the nature of our life after death and before final judgment. They explain how wonderful it is that part of our judgment is according to the desires of our hearts. The have a deep discussion about the nature of godliness and happiness and how uncleanness keeps us from the deep joy that is part of having a godly nature, and how much God wants us to be happy. They tie all of this together to help us understand who Christ and God are and what they are like and thus to understand what our future is like.We are grateful for our sponsors, who make this podcast possible. Kerry Muhlestein spoke at the 2021 Tracing Ancient Threads in the Book of Moses Conference on Saturday, April 24, 2021. Jacob is one of the key doctrinal teachers in the Book of Mormon. After preaching in Jacob 2-3, he writes to future readers of the Book of Mormon in Jacob 4-6. What is Jacob's goal and purpose in writing these important chapters? Why does he include Zenos' allegory of the olive tree, and what does it teach us? In this episode, BYU professors Keith Wilson, Shon Hopkin, Dana Pike, and Kerry Muhlestein explore these questions in an inspiring scripture conversation.

Central to the Book of Mormon is the doctrine of how Israel was scattered, and how they will be gathered. When and how was Israel scattered? How will they be gathered in the last days? Why is this so important to God's work? In this episode, BYU professors Joseph Spencer, Terry Ball, Gaye Strathearn, and Kerry Muhlestein explore these questions in an inspiring scripture conversation.

As Holy Week and Easter Sunday approach, we thought it would be helpful to visit with someone who could help us reflect on these sacred events in a new way. Our guest today, Dr. Kerry Muhlestein, recently wrote The Easter Connection, which dives into the biblical account of Holy Week and illuminates the theme of eternal unification. In this short book—you could read it in just one sitting—Kerry explores the various ways Jesus's final week teaches us about disconnection, and the idea that through the atonement of Jesus Christwe can overcome the separation that seems to be at the heart of our suffering. One of the things we appreciated about our conversation with Kerry is that, while his new analysis offers a fresh understanding of the atonement, he also leaves space for the mystery of the atonement, and the ways it surpasses our understanding. Holy Week is a time for contemplation, of sitting with the story of Jesus' atonement and death on the cross and letting it transform us. While we always hope for new insights that increase our understanding, the magnitude of what we can't comprehend about the story is part of what keeps us coming back to the story again and again. We appreciate Kerry drawing us to the beauty of mystery in the atonement. We also appreciated the practical takeaways from Kerry's book; when we see human suffering and sin as a product of separation and disconnection, it is easier to be merciful with people's flaws and mistakes, not to mention our own. Kerry helps us see how love and unity are always what we are seeking, deep down.Kerry's book, The Easter Connection, is at Seagull, Deseret Book, and Amazon.

The Book of Mormon is a compilation of many other ancient scriptural sources, such as the Brass plates, record of Lehi, small plates of Nephi, large plates of Nephi, and record of the Jaredites. How did Mormon pull these courses come together to create his book, and what's the logic to its organization? For over 50 years, For the Strength of Youth has been a guide for generations of Latter-day Saint youth. I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me. We are elated to hear from Kerry Muhlestein on our channel today! Kerry is an incredible scholar with a great sense of humor. We had a blast hearing from him about the controversial Book of Abraham. Here are some things Kerry addresses in this video: What are some of the most common/ most problematic assumptions that Latter-day Saints and/or non-Latter-day Saints are making (or have made, historically) about the history of the Book of Abraham? What tips can you give us and our viewers to help us learn to recognize (and be confident in) revelation when it comes? Many of your online critics claim that because you believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet -- because that is your starting point -- you have closed yourself off to the possibility of the Book of Abraham being false or fraudulent. The general claim is that this is an academically unsound approach, and that your scholarship is suspect because you're unwilling to consider those conclusions that might challenge your worldview.
Today I interview Kerry Muhlestein a professor of Ancient Scripture at BYU, Director of the BYU Egyptian Excavation Project, and my Old Testament Professor. Kerry talks about how he feels like he's had a testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his whole life. He discusses how his parents were a great example to him, and how their fervent discipleship paved the way for Kerry to discover his own love for the scriptures. Kerry talks about his hardships reconciling his academic research and faith and advises listeners on his best strategies to use revelation to gain further understanding. I love this episode and I hope you enjoy!
There was in 2nd Century BC Egypt an indisputable multicultural sharing of religious ideas between Jews, Greeks, and Egyptians. How should that fact influence how we evaluate Joseph Smith's interpretations of the Abraham facsimiles in general and individual hieroglyphics on the facsimiles specifically? On a related note, some of Joseph's descriptions of Facsimile #2 contain temple themes, saying more will be revealed about those in the temple. Can Egyptologists today read those hieroglyphs? And are they actually connected in any way to what we learn about in our modern temples? Also, Dr. Robert Ritner is an Egyptologist who has critiqued LDS scholarship on the Book of Abraham. Has he been adequately responded to? And finally, what are the top three most solid intellectual evidences for the book of Abraham having ancient connections which Joseph Smith could not have known about? In today's episode of Church History Matters, we dive into all of these questions and more with Dr. Kerry Muhlestein, an Eyptologist and scholar on the Book of Abraham. In July 1835, members of the Church donated money to acquire four Egyptian mummies and a collection of papyrus scrolls from a traveling exhibition. Through revelation, the Prophet Joseph Smith identified that one scroll contained “the writings of Abraham.” But what do we know about the history and context of the papyri? How was it translated? Why was it important for God to reveal the history of Abraham? In this episode, Professor Kerry Muhlestein, an Egyptologist and Abrahamic scholar, discusses his recent book Let's Talk about the Book of Abraham. He highlights stories of the Book of Abraham, examines the common criticism of authenticity and translation of the papyri, and offers ways to examine the divine text on our own. September 19-25 Isaiah's very name means The Lord is Salvation. In this week's chapters (40-49) we get a clear message that there is no other God but Jehovah, who is Jesus Christ. We cannot turn to the world, we cannot turn to idols, we cannot turn to those around us, we can only turn to the one true God. He has made a covenant with His chosen servants (those who will follow Him), the posterity and adopted ones of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The Spirit of the Lord is poured out upon all those who keep the covenant and they will also receive the Lord's protection and covenant blessings. We welcome our dear friend, Dr. Kerry Muhlestein, this week as we dive deep into Isaiah.
