In 2002, Ashley Capps took a gamble- he rented hundreds of acres in rural Tennessee and put on a music festival. Coming on the heels of the infamous Lollapalooza '99 and an unsuccessful festival at the same site two years earlier, few thought Ashley could pull it off. As you (and the 80,000 people who attended the festival this year) know, Ashley and his partners proved the doubters wrong and created one of the most iconic festivals in modern America. Bob and Ben caught up with Ashley Capps back stage at Bonnaroo to talk about the history of the Bonnaroo Music Festival, how Ashley selected Manchester, TN, and the changes in the live music industry that have happened since he began working in live music decades ago. He also shares his insight on building the relationships that make a major festival sustainable. Bob also shares his experiences playing Bonnaroo with the Avett Brothers from the small stage in 2006 to the main stage in 2019. According to the IRS, there are over 750,000 not for profit organizations in the United States. Organizations like the Red Cross, Susan G Komen Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and so many more. These missions fill mainstream roles in the national conversations, but there are 100s of thousands you might not even know about, doing great work in their community. Non-Profit Companies have a ton of headwinds, and you might even be mulling over the idea to start your own non-profit and might not even have the slightest clue where to start. Or, you might even have found a cause you love, but want more information about the non-profit and want to know how to research it to see if they really are spending that money on the mission, or is the non-profit being used as a cover for something else? To help us understand all of that and more we welcome a person with over 28 years of experience in the world of Fundraising. To date she has raised over $22 million for various organizations and has worked with a huge set of different non-profits. From international philanthropists and world-renowned artists. Her passion is producing public art projects and bringing people together through social media, which is where I met Ashley Capps. You might have seen her Tik Toks talking about 990s (and if you have no idea what that is, we explain it). And that's just the beginning.  This episode is dedicated to some of those big changes. Whether you are a seasoned Bonnaroovian looking forward to what's new or a Bonna-rookie with no clue what to expect, we have you covered.  "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com.

Ashley Capps was more than 20 years into his career when he conceived of an idea that would change live music forever: Bonnaroo. After the first Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, Rolling Stone Magazine called the festival one of the "50 Moments that Changed Rock & Roll". Ashley and Ben geek out on the cultural importance of live music, how it can shape culture, and how it can make lasting impacts on communities. Ashley started AC Entertainment in 1991, but now he's more than content to focus on his passion project turned cultural phenomenon "Big Ears". When Ashley started Big Ears, he did it for himself and his community. Ashley says the fact that the 2022 itteration of Big Ears had economic impact of over 36 million dollars on the City of Knoxville was just icing on the cake.

We've got another amazing Ashley today on the show - Ashley Capps. Ashley is a Style Coach and the Founder of AC.Styles, a personal styling business designed to help people create a wardrobe that brings them joy and confidence in their daily lives. She has styled over 1k people all over the US and is passionate about helping clients find the right styles, fit, and brands that are not only flattering but also bring out their personality.    I'm pumped to bring you this interview because Ashley was someone who sat on the sidelines for FAR too long, dreaming of starting her own business but never feeling quite qualified enough or good enough to do it. She was nervous about taking that leap out on her own, like SO many other aspiring entrepreneurs out there.   Is this you right now? Waiting to feel ready before you start your own coaching business? If this sounds like you, you're waiting to be more experienced or knowledgeable then I have news for you - this time will NEVER come! You're never going to feel “READY” to start your business! Being ready is a myth, perfectionism is a myth. There is no such thing.    You just have to get out there and TRY something which is exactly what Ashley did. She called up a few friends and tested out her company idea on them as what we like to call “beta clients” - something I teach inside our program Path to Freedom Coach Accelerator.    Putting out a minimum viable product to test the market and do some research before pouring your heart, soul, and months of time into a program that no one wants.   I love Ashley's tips in this episode for how she got over her fears, how she created her program (step by step with her first clients), how she made networking her top priority when starting her business and so much more.   She really just started with what she knew and then learned what she didn't know along the way, which is exactly what you need to do if you want to start your own coaching business.    Also on this episode, we talk about the top THREE priorities you should be focused on in the beginning stage of your business and (hint) your branding, photography and imagery is NOT one of those things.   Don't try to make your business look “pretty” and “polished” from the beginning. Don't wast your time on things that FEEL productive but aren't actually moving you forward and creating income and impact.   If you want some help with the tasks you should prioritize along with the tasks you need to STOP doing immediately if you want to start and grow your own coaching business fast - then shoot me an email at Ali@punchdrunksoul.com and put “COACH NOW” in the copy and I will follow up with my quickstart guide for coaches. This guide book and workbook is for you if you're struggling to see progress with your coaching business and you want to get more efficient with the time you're putting into your business so you can actually see results fast.   So shoot me that email at ali@punchdrunksoul.com and I will send you our free “How to start a profitable coaching business without prior experience or certifications” guidebook. You don't want to miss out on this if you have it!   Ok, let's get into this interview!   If you enjoy this episode I'd love for you to let us know by sharing it on your Instagram stories and tagging us! I'm @punchdrunksoul and Ashlee is @ac-styless .   OK let's get into this interview...   Aha Moments:   How Ashley got over her fears of judgement and failure so she could start her own coaching business What it took for Ashley to find her first clients and test out her business idea What it means to have a North Star in your business and life and why it's critical The top THREE priorities you should be focused on when you're starting your own coaching business  How Ashley overcame burnout from working too hard in her business in the beginning Why you need to stick with ONE marketing strategy at a time when starting your coaching business   Links: Instagram: Instagram.com/ac-styless   Website: http://www.ac-styles.com/ Path to Freedom Coach Accelerator: Punchdrunksoul.com/pathtofreedom

Do you remember the 1980s? The Cold War, Reagan, big hair, synthesizers, yuppies, AIDS, MTV? It can be easy to point and laugh at times, maybe easier than it is to remember the good things about the era. It did not make national headlines, but one of those good things was Green Acres Music Hall, which came of age in that decade. In our first episode, we touched on some of the history of the music scene in the region and how rough things could get in the 70s, with biker gangs taking over outdoor festivals and rock clubs, and in this episode we get to some more of the history of the live music business in the 80s and early 90s. You know, the days when you didn’t buy tickets online, but at a window after you waited in line. When being social was always in person rather than often on a network. This was the heyday of Green Acres Music Hall. Victor Wooten, Steve Metcalf, Roy "Futureman" Wooten, Vicki Dameron and Bela Fleck in the early 1990s This episode features conversations with artists like Bela Fleck, John Cowan, Darin Aldridge, the band Acoustic Syndicate, Sandy Carlton, Ashley Capps of AC Entertainment, Green Acres regular and frequent emcee Vicki Dameron, Carol Rifkin, former club owner Phil Dennis and Mettie, the “Little King”, Steve Metcalf. We’ll also feature more live music recorded at the Acres, as we have been able to dive into more tapes from Steve Metcalf’s collection, and live shows from archive.org. Plus, we travel to a place in neighboring Cleveland County called Brackett Cedar Park, which also brought in artists that were fusing bluegrass and country with rock elements, and is still going. Please take a moment to rate the show, and comment on the podcasts on those platforms -- it is tremendously helpful in our effort to spread awareness of Southern Songs and Stories, and the artists we spotlight. And we hope you will support the music of the artists you enjoy hearing on the show -- even though the performances we’re highlighting are from decades ago, all of these artists are still out touring and making music, and they wouldn’t be able to do it without support from people like you. Thanks to our supporters, and to Osiris Podcasts and Bluegrass Planet Radio for carrying our series, and to Dynamite Roasting for sharing their coffee with our listeners.

We're pleased to present a reading from poet Ashley Capps, recorded at the 2012 Port Townsend Writers' Conference. It all started in 1974 with the founding of the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference by novelist Bill Ransom, who envisioned an egalitarian, non-hierarchical conference where the emphasis was on the craft of literary writing. Such writers and welcomers as Jim Heynen, Carol Jane Bangs, Sam Hamill, Rebecca Brown, and many others continued this emphasis on the writing craft over the next few decades, and the Conference has become an annual pilgrimage for many. Whether you’re seeking to create or revise new work, find writing community, or simply desire a writing retreat in an inspirational location, Centrum is at the heart of the thriving Pacific Northwest literary scene. The list of Port Townsend Writers’ Conference faculty members is long and distinguished.
