The 125-bed facility provides safe and affordable housing to the brave men and women who served our country honorably. At this facility, the health of residents is a top priority. Mental well-being is equally important here. Chris Atha arrived at the facility from the VA through their alcohol treatment program. He was also dealing with physical challenges as a result of a recent surgery. He's grateful for the assistance he has received there, from ongoing access to health and educational resources to moral support offered by caring staff members. Assistance with residency applications can be obtained through any of the West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance Benefits Offices, or you may contact the Veterans Home directly. The facility also welcomes donations. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Friday, Nov. 1, 2024. A historic manufacturing site in Charleston is undergoing a major overhaul to focus on new economic opportunities…the Appalachian Regional Commission invests nearly $2 million to help connect Mon Forest Towns and promote outdoor recreation tourism…and Appalachian comfort food meets wild game at a new restaurant in Barboursville…on today's daily304. #1 – From STATE JOURNAL – A coalition of city, state and private partners is well on its way toward transforming a massive manufacturing facility on Charleston's East End into a center focused on new economic opportunities. The 9-acre, 110,000-square-foot former home of Kanawha Manufacturing is being overhauled and renovated to become the Charleston LIFT (Learning, Innovation, Food & Technology) Center. The initiative is seeded by funds from the $62.8 million federal grant received by the Appalachian Climate Technologies Coalition (ACT Now Coalition) from the American Rescue Plan Act. According to Andrew Dunlap, director of economic development for the Charleston Area Alliance, there are already three committed tenants for the new facility: Marshall University's Green Battery Research Institute, a food hub/commercial kitchen space and a vocational training center for the Coal Development Corporation. “We're going to have just under 20,000 square feet for a future tenant or tenants,” Dunpap said. “We're out there actively marketing that space right now.” Read more: https://www.statejournal.com/news/historic-manufacturing-site-in-charleston-west-virginia-undergoing-multi-million-overhaul/article_56ce12cb-744c-5e2f-984f-76e5c81aaa8f.html #2 – From WAJR – The Appalachian Regional Commission has awarded nearly $2 million through the POWER Initiative to Woodlands Community Lender on behalf of Mon Forest Towns Partnership for a series of projects to connect towns with the Monongahela National Forest. The investment will help train workers, advance new industries, and build upon the progress toward a brighter future full of economic opportunity in the region. The Mon Forest Towns Partnership is part of a $68.2 million award package and will help develop outdoor recreation economies for 12 coal-impacted communities in eight counties of Monongahela National Forest, according to Executive Director Josh Nease. “We want to promote the region as a cohesive tourism and recreation destination,” Nease said. “It will also advance our work to firmly establish each town as a gateway to the Monongahela National Forest.” The 12 towns and the partnership have been working on projects to make the forest more accessible in the Monongahela National Forest region, including Cowen, Davis, Durbin, Elkins, Franklin, Marlinton, Parsons, Petersburg, Richwood, Seneca Rocks, Thomas, and White Sulphur Springs. House Fire in Barboursville 10/15/24
Burnley Vineyard was first planted in 1977 making them one of the early winegrowing pioneers during the formative years when Virginia wine was just beginning to re-emerge after a long slumber from the years of Prohibition and its repeal. C. J. Reeder, Lee Reeder's father purchased the land in 1977 and Gabriele Rausse who had just begun to plant Barboursville Vineyard down the road from this property entire into a handshake deal with C. J. The arrangement was Burnley would buy Barboursville vines, (they had begun a nursery at that time) and Barboursville would buy their grapes. Ultimately that would lead to Burnley Vineyards producing its first Estate Wines in 1984 with Lee Reeder fresh out of VA Tech as the winemaker. Lee has been the winemaker ever since.I believe you will find this interview refreshing by the openness and honesty that Lee Reeder shows throughout our discussion. One of the fascinating facets of this interview is how Lee and Burnley Vineyard helped contribute to the trail about whether Cynthiana is a different grape than Norton or the same. I believe through, mostly my tasting experiences over the past several years that it is the former.Take a listen and decide for yourself. Send us a Text Message. In this podcast I interviewed Kate Carrico and Kira Memery, two incredibly generous flower farmers in central Virginia. They are the faces behind Blooms4Good. Kate and Kira sell their flowers at local pop-up events with 100% of the proceeds going to the non-profits they support!!! Yes, you read that right. 100% of what they earn goes to the nonprofits they support! This 2024 growing season they are supporting the non-profits SAFE (a shelter for victims of domestic violence – based in Culpeper and serving the surrounding rural counties) and International Neighbors (helping refugee families get settled & connected in the Charlottesville area.) I have never met two more generous people. I'm in awe of the work they are doing and all the "good", awareness, change, fundraising and collaboration that has stemmed from their beautiful BLOOMS.In this episode they talk about how their organization, Blooms4Good, began, how it has changed their lives for the better, and their goals in the year to come. I can't wait to support them in the future and for YOU to hear their story and be inspired to do something good in your community. BIO: blooms4good blooms4good is a small but mighty squad of do-gooders, growing flowers in central Virginia to raise money and awareness for local non-profits. Kate and Kira met in the summer of 2023 – Kira had an established flower farm in Barboursville, VA and was looking for an outlet for her blooms while also wanting to do some good. Meanwhile, Kate had launched blooms4good the year prior – she was inspired by the potential her small Gordonsville flower farm could have in the community and decided to leverage her garden to raise money for local non-profits. Her first event was the fall of 2022. The blooms4good team hit the ground running in 2023, popping up at local vineyards and breweries – selling flower arrangements in vases donated by friends and family, filled with flowers grown with so much love – some blooms were even donated by other local growers! Kate and Kira covered all expenses so that every dollar could go to charity. This 2024 season, the blooms and generosity of flower lovers are primarily supporting International Neighbors (helping refugee families get settled & connected in the Charlottesville) and SAFE (a shelter for victims of domestic violence – based in Culpeper and serving the surrounding rural counties). The team also joins other charities as fundraising opportunities arise._____________________________________________________________________Instagram: @blooms4goodUpcoming events:9/7 Cville Pride FestivalFundraising for: Charlottesville Pride Community Network (cvillepride.org)9/14 Caboose Brewery Pop Up (Fairfax Location)Fundraising for: BellRinger · Gear Up: End Cancer

I welcome to the show, again, and this time for a much longer and more thorough conversation, Luca Paschina, the head winemaker and GM of Barboursville, the historic property in the Monticello AVA of Virginia. Luca was on the show in 2016, originally on episode 162. Barboursville has a long history, which starts around the same time as its current owners' wine history -- the Zonin family of Veneto (found 1821). We discuss Thomas Jefferson and his role in trying to get Virginia wine started. Luca tells us about Gianni Zonin, who purchased Barboursville in 1976 and created the first world class winery in Virginia. He is still the owner today. Luca has been the head winemaker of Barboursville since 1990. He gives us an excellent retrospective on what he has learned in these decades and the key terroir points about the Monticello AVA. tell us the . We also touch on some of the challenges and the advantages of the region and we are pretty honest about separating the wheat from the chaff. This is a very honest look at Virginia, and frankly a great way to tell if a winery you visit knows what they are talking about. If they don't follow Luca's advice, likely the wine isn't going to be very good! Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Tuesday, Jan. 23 You've heard of Mothman, but did you know the Monongahela River also has its own cryptid legends? Check out some WV small towns perfect for outdoor lovers. And a Morgantown manufacturer gets a boost from the state to help create more jobs…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – Far from the city lights that shimmer about its mouth at the Golden Triangle at Pittsburgh, the Monongahela River rises more than 200 miles away in some of the most remote reaches in the Appalachian Mountains -- so it's no surprise that these remote stretches have spurned legends of river monsters. Historian Glenn Lough of Fairmont speculated that indigenous peoples first invented tales of monsters to frighten Europeans away from their camps, and settlers recycled these tales to impress new residents. One of the oldest legends is the Ogua -- described in the late 1700s by a youth stationed at Fort Harmer in present-day Marietta, Ohio. The creature is said to be amphibious, lurking in the water by day but crawling out of the water at night to feast on deer Legend has it the Monongy -- a half man, half fish creature -- has been lurking in the river since the French and Indian War. The Rivesville Monster was discovered in 1983, when a coal miner fishing for channel catfish near the town spotted a large fin with a serpentine tail moving toward him. If you're brave enough to search for these monsters, you can learn more about them on the Marion County CVB website. Made up of WVU alumni, the company manufactures germicidal, ultra-violet lamps - a new product to a relatively new industry. It's not easy, however, to secure funding for the physical capital necessary for UV lamp manufacturing. Creating a "party atmosphere in motels" was the method of operation for the woman convicted of sex trafficking. A 44-year-old woman was recently given a prison term of little more than 17 years for sex trafficking minors across Northern California and southern Oregon. After receiving information that a runaway female juvenile from Modesto, California, age 15, was possibly staying at a Motel 6 in Medford, Oregon on May 10, at around 5:13 a.m., police responded to the motel. It was stated that the adolescent went missing on April 29, 2019. The missing girl, along with another female of the same age, Lucious James Roy, and Dawniel Santangelo, both of Stockton, California, were located in the room, according to the police. The inquiry led detectives to believe that Roy and Santangelo conspired to traffic the "lost girl from California to Oregon, furnish her with marijuana, and engage her in prostitution," as police put it. The United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California has stated that there were numerous victims. At trial, evidence revealed that between September 2018 and May 2019, "Santangelo enlisted teenage girls in Northern California and southern Oregon for prostitution. These girls were between the ages of 15 and 17. Santangelo threw parties in motels in Stockton and Salinas and plied the girls with wine and narcotics in order to get them to engage in sexual acts with random men." They say she would put up advertising of the victims online and drive them to truck stops and motels where they would have sexual encounters with males for cash. The Attorney General's Office announced Santangelo's sentence on three charges of child sex trafficking and one count of transferring a minor for the purpose of illegal sexual behavior on Monday, August 29. He was given a total of 17 years and seven months in prison. Philip A. Talbert, the United States Attorney, issued a statement in which he said, "Santangelo's behavior in this instance was appalling. She was crucial in recruiting the girls into the plot by promising them freedom and enjoyment. Soon after she had them in her grasp, she put them to work, exploiting three young children over the course of more than nine months and hundreds of kilometers." Roy pled guilty to conspiracy to participate in sex trafficking of a child and was given a sentence of 17 years and 7 months in prison on April 12, 2021, according to the Attorney's Office. 2 During a custody battle, a woman in Indiana was found guilty of poisoning her ex-oatmeal boyfriend's and then strangling him to death with his favorite tie. A 42-year-old mother was convicted guilty of murdering her child's father last week by poisoning his porridge and strangling him with his favorite necktie. According to the court documents, on Tuesday, August 23rd, Heidi Littlefield was convicted guilty of murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit murder. On March 25, 2021, Littlefield, her daughter Logan Runyon, and Runyon's boyfriend, Robert James Walker, were all arrested in connection with the killing of Francis Kelly. The 22-year-old Runyon and the 29-year-old Walker were both charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit murder, while the murder case against Runyon was dropped. Carmel Police say that on January 18, 2021, they responded to a death investigation at a residence in the 14000 block of Howe Drive, where they discovered Kelly dead. According to the autopsy results, he was murdered. According to the Indianapolis Star, Kelly was murdered by Littlefield during a heated custody battle for their 2-year-old son. As part of her deal with the prosecution, Runyon testified against her mother at her trial. She admitted to participating in a plot to kill someone and was given a 26-year prison term as a result of her guilty plea. Reports say that Littlefield paid Walker $2,500 to hire a hit man to kill Kelly, but that Walker and Runyon instead spent the money on drugs and other stuff. According to Runyon's testimony, Littlefield instructed her to acquire fentanyl from Ohio drug dealers and then mix it with his oatmeal. The lady apparently also added some to his miso soup. Kelly was allegedly given fentanyl three times. At Kelly's house, Littlefield and Runyon discovered him struggling for breath on January 14th, 2021. According to reports, Littlefield ordered Runyon to break his neck, but the latter was unable to do so due to the man's excessive bulk. In his room, Littlefield allegedly found his victim's favorite tie and used it as a makeshift noose. He was found to have died of strangulation, according to the coroner. WKRC-TV reports that Walker admitted to participating in a murder plot and pled guilty. A 10-year prison term was imposed against him. The court has set Littlefield's sentencing for the month of October. 3 Mom gets 5 years for abandoning baby in hot bath Last Monday, a 35-year-old lady was given a five-year prison sentence for abandoning her newborn daughter in hot water, resulting in severe burns. According to court records from Wichita County, Texas, on August 25 Jessica Brashear was sentenced after pleading guilty to child endangerment. She will serve the remainder of her sentence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, where she was given credit for 54 days already spent there. The accusation against Brashear states that on June 29, 2017, she "failed to verify the water temperature" before placing her daughter in the bathtub. The indictment claims that Brashear's "failure to thrive" is the result of her "failure to voluntarily deliver the kid to a certified infant care facility provider" after she saw her daughter in the boiling water. The youngster had second-degree burns all over her body, so she was taken to the hospital and then flown to the Parkland Burn Unit, according to KFDX/KJTL-TV. Her buttocks, legs, feet, and ankles made up 17% of her burned body, according to reports. Brashear allegedly stated that she submerged her daughter in hot water after turning on both the hot and cold water taps to the baby tub. She says she pulled her kid out of the pool when she started making noises, but physicians are putting the time at just one or two minutes. KFDX/KJTL state that the girl was 7 months old at the time of the event. As for Brashear's other four kids, they've all been taken away from her. In 2005, she lost custody of her first kid after the father was accused of smearing feces on the infant's face. It has been stated that Brashear's then-boyfriend, who was a meth dealer, caused the removal of a kid born in 2007. The child's health was questioned in 2010 due to rapid weight loss, three years later. And Brashear was found guilty of forgery around the same time. Since she allegedly failed to appear in court in 2012, her fourth kid has been taken from her. 4 A former superintendent in Ohio is being accused of kidnapping four students. Last week, a former school superintendent was arrested after he allegedly kidnapped two kids and offered them money to babysit his 4-year-old son. On August 25, investigators from the Huntington Police Department, SWAT Team, Huntington Violent Crime/Drug Task Force, and the Barboursville Police Department arrested 59-year-old William Morrison III on two charges of kidnapping, as stated in a joint release. Morrison, according to police in Huntington, "lured two children into his vehicle" on August 17. Both Morrison's Huntington home and his Barboursville flat were searched by investigators acting on search warrants. Court filings obtained by WBNS-TV state that Morrison approached a boy and girl, ages 9 and 12, in his black SUV and offered them $20 to watch his child. After putting the kids in the car, Morrison allegedly pretended to check the tire and ordered the boy out. As soon as the child exited the vehicle, Morrison allegedly took off. The youngster reportedly began sobbing and pleading with the driver to get her out of the vehicle. According to the accusation, Morrison doubled his babysitting fee from $100 to $200. According to the documents, which are cited by NBC News, police said, "The male refused the girl's demands to be allowed out of the vehicle, but the girl was able to open a passenger door and flee the vehicle a few streets away." The purported kidnapping did not result in any harm being done to either child. It was reported in 2017 by the Columbus Dispatch that Morrison, the superintendent of the Hamilton Local School District in Columbus, Ohio, was fired after police discovered crack cocaine in his car. In exchange for his guilty plea, Morrison received a sentence of 180 days in jail, with 176 days suspended, for the misdemeanor offense of possession of a counterfeit controlled substance. For the time being, Morrison is a prisoner at the Western Regional Jail. If you like TRUE CRIME TODAY - Be sure to search and subscribe wherever you download podcasts!
