In this episode of Appalachian Shine, we explore how invention in the mountains didn't come from laboratories or corporations—but from necessity. From the steamboat tested on the Potomac near Shepherdstown, to wire rope forged in Pennsylvania coal country, to moonshine stills refined in hidden hollers, Appalachia quietly helped build the modern world. With stories of overlooked inventors, unnamed craftspeople, and communities solving life-or-death problems, this episode traces how innovation born of hard terrain, isolation, and resilience reshaped industry, transportation, energy, and everyday life across America. This is not a story of nostalgia. It's a story of survival, ingenuity, and Appalachian brilliance. #AppalachianShine #Appalachia #AppalachianHistory #BuiltInTheHoller #MountainStories www.supportappalachia.org Donate today.

The Grave Talks | Haunted, Paranormal & Supernatural

Shepherdstown, West Virginia, may be small, but its history runs deep — and dark. Founded in 1762 along the Potomac River, it's one of the oldest towns in the state. On the surface, it's full of charm — brick sidewalks, historic homes, and the quiet hum of university life. But behind the beauty lies centuries of turmoil. Just three miles away, the Battle of Antietam became one of the bloodiest days in American history. When it ended, the wounded poured in by the thousands, turning every home, church, and business into a field hospital. Locals say the town was never the same — it seems that the ground itself remembers. Ghostly figures are seen near the riverbanks, whispers echo from the churchyards, and even Shepherd University has its share of unexplained encounters. Janet Hughes, owner of Shepherdstown Mystery Walks, knows these stories better than anyone. Through her tours, she reveals the layers of tragedy, resilience, and lingering energy that make Shepherdstown one of the most haunted towns in West Virginia. Mostly Heaven ambience. Shepherdstown, West Virginia — a favorite recording place of mine. But this time, with a twist: we're adding the “almost” to the “heaven” this week with the help of some pink noise, cymbals, and synth. Or the “heaven” to the “almost.”My daughter and I went to Handmade Christmas in Shepherdstown, WV, and she said to the festive hot-chocolate guy, “You look like you really love Christmas.” And we got doubles and some Reindeer Munch at the local popcorn place. It was just me and the youngest this weekend on a mission to treat the weekend like a ****** sleepover. I also wanted to show support for a favorite business after a congressional rug-pull this week. If I could call forth one fictional lunatic to fight the overbearing bureaucratic nonsense of today, it would be Timothy Hutton's character in Turk 182. But let's face it — The Turk 182 guy would be ineffective in today's realities. No one is going to care if you spray some sick graffiti on the mayor's van. No one is going to pay attention if you send up a banner plane to shame a bureaucrat with a seven character sky note. However, Turk 182 guy is persistent and unhinged, and he would unleash wacky havoc. You're thinking, “I didn't come to a sound podcast to read about politics.” And so I will not descend into cloud-shouting toward political tight-assed villainy hence forth. If you would rather be in Purgatorio, click here. And if you like what you hear give me a follow on your podcast app! Otherwise the next episode is going to be from my sister's chicken coup and trust me that **** is not chill.

Over the years, the couple's mansion gained a reputation for being the West's most beautiful home. Today, guests can travel back in time with a lovely island visit during the months of May through October. The island can only be accessed with a 20-minute ride on a 19th-century-style sternwheeler, which is an adventure in and of itself. Riding instructors, please take the time to listen to this interview and consider joining this brilliant program: PAL Around Pony SchoolHere's Shelley's Bio:Shelley Manley has been riding horses for close to 40 years and teaching young riders for over thirty years.  She started teaching riding lessons at the age of 15 and just never stopped! She also has a B.S and M.A in Psychology, and an M.Ed. in School Counseling.  She has worked as the riding director at a residential children's home and as a riding instructor at multiple facilities.  She has also worked as a School Counselor for eleven years at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. She lives in Shepherdstown, WV with her 2 kids, 5 cats, 1 great pyrenees, 1 bearded dragon, and 1 retired pony!Ride From the Start LLC and the PAL Around Pony School program began in 2012, when Shelley had many parents of young children requesting horseback riding lessons. This often proved a challenging endeavor, as her tiniest riders would quickly grow bored when riding and were not able to sustain attention on the pony beyond a few minutes at a time.  While studying to become a school counselor, Shelley was also learning how to develop a curriculum and write lesson plans. She was studying child development in depth and pondering how to create a more age-appropriate means of introducing young children to horses. She decided to use her newfound skills to create a program that combined elements of fun hands-on learning, stories, songs, games, and horseback riding. In March of 2012, she held her first class, offering it to a group of friends and their children.  Since the students were eager to continue the program, she recognized a need to continue developing the lesson plans, and the PAL Around Pony School curriculum began to take shape. It has evolved over the past thirteen years, as a result of customer feedback.  The program has operated at six different locations across the Eastern panhandle and in the nearby states of Virginia and Maryland, all with consistent success. Hundreds of area children have now enjoyed PAL Around Pony School, and many of those children have continued into regular riding lessons. Other instructors have also taught the program successfully, and it is time to bring this important program to instructors across the country. Please click here to follow Ride from the Start on Facebook. And for more info, kindly visit the PAL Around Pony School website here: www.ponyschool.net~~~~~~~~~~Thanks so much for listening!  Please write a review if you're inspired!

Olivia Ellen Lloyd's latest album, 'Do It Myself,' sees the West Virginia-born Brooklyn-based songwriter reflecting on the powerful imagery of water. She shares how it has been a source of grounding and calmness in her life, from childhood memories spent on the Potomac River to her current love for the ocean, these elements have shaped her artistic journey. In an interesting twist, it was her friends and family that pointed out that she's always trying to get around water. From there, she reflected on the positive impact that being in and around water has had on her mental state.Olivia also opens up in our Basic Folk conversation about her complex relationship with her hometown of Shepherdstown, West Virginia, where she's experienced both hardships and good memories (her grandfather was actually the mayor and there's a street named after him). Ultimately she decided to leave, but she still spends about half the year there. She talks about how, especially on the new album, her sound is impacted by the duality of small-town life versus her evolving relationship with New York City. We also discuss the foundation of her musicality, which was strongly influenced by her late father, who stressed the importance of learning music by ear. As she navigates her identity as an independent woman in the music industry, she discusses the challenges of societal expectations and the importance of self-reliance. With humor and vulnerability, Olivia Ellen Lloyd explores themes of resilience, love, and the struggles many women face in finding their voice and place in the world.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael introduces Dr. Bryce Hayes, the artistic director of Winchester Musica Viva and a professor of music at James Madison University. Dr. Hayes provided insight into the impressive history and offerings of Winchester Musica Viva, a professional-level chamber choir based in the Winchester area. He shared that the organization has been around for 44 years, serving as a high-level musical ensemble consisting of singers with significant musical expertise, many of whom are choir directors or professional musicians. The choir auditions annually to ensure maintaining a high standard of excellence. One of the key topics discussed was their upcoming performance of Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol'. This unique 75-minute presentation involves a narrator delivering Dickens' original text, supported by the choir providing background music and atmospheric effects. It's a challenging piece for an acapella choir but promises to be an enchanting experience for the audience, filled with holiday spirit. Dr. Hayes emphasized how Winchester Musica Viva aims to broaden its audience by performing in various non-traditional venues, including their spring program inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, which will take place in venues outside of churches. Dr. Hayes also shared his excitement about providing musicians with a space to continue making music at a high level, thus helping to stave off professional burnout and maintain their skills. This fosters a rich community of musicians from recent graduates to seasoned professionals. For those eager to catch the upcoming 'A Christmas Carol', performances will be held in Shepherdstown and Winchester, with tickets available at winchestermusicaviva.org. Dr. Hayes encouraged listeners to purchase their tickets early as both shows are expected to sell out, It's a perfect early Christmas gift or outing for families and colleagues to take in some high-quality choral music and holiday cheer. Welcome to episode 41 of the Nurtured by Nature podcast, today I'm delighted to be joined in conversation by Leah Rampy, author of the recently released book Earth and Soul: Reconnecting Amid Climate Chaos. In Leah I found a kindred spirit, someone who has a deep love, respect & friendship for Mother Earth & all the beings we share our world with. Her beautiful book, is a sign post to hope for all of us, that emerged as she herself grappled with the question: How do those of us who care about the Earth live in these times? How do we navigate our collective grief without being consumed & losing our way?   Leah provides a narrative of gentle remembering, of not turning away from our dear friend, Mother Earth during her suffering, but of coming together to bear witness with open hearts, to hold each other as we move through these difficult edge times, finding ways to keep going through the uncertainty, to take each step slowly as we pick up the threads to help weave a new vision for the Earth. We explore ways to hold our grief, during these times of unraveling, from seeking company to remembering to embrace Awe & Wonder, through practices like the Celtic 5 Stringed Harp & the mindset of the pilgrim in communion with the land. Leah encourages us to value these threshold times, finding sanctuary in the discernment of cultivating deep listening, as we remember that a different relationship with nature is possible. Learn more about LeahAfter giving numerous presentations on the dangers of impending climate change, Leah Rampy became convinced that something was missing from the conversations. With experience as a teacher, professor, corporate and nonprofit executive, and leadership consultant, she began a decades-long journey to understand what lies beneath our unwillingness to change our interactions with the natural world. Her growing commitment to reweaving soul and Earth has been informed by leading over a dozen pilgrimages and many more retreats, extensive reading and research, her contemplative practice, and the wisdom of the living world.
