While there are many factors contributing to the issues of housing supply and affordability, beauty might be an important and under-discussed consideration. Joining me this week are Jaydean Boldt, principal at New Urban Design Group, and Sam Farthing, an architect specializing in classical and sacred architecture in Saskatoon. Both Jaydean and Sam are thinking about the housing crisis in the context of how good and beautiful urban design can help foster greater acceptance of housing construction in communities where more homes are needed. This a shorter and quirkier podcast  than usual. I read a book which moved me and I wanted to make a podcast about it. It is essentially about the life of a sparrow. I suppose most of us had a time when we tried to rescue an infant or injured bird, usually with an unhappy outcome. In this story an interesting relationship develops between a special woman and a special sparrow. Trevor Farthing, who lived in St Helen's, Merseyside, was no stranger to mental anguish. Over the years, his long term partner Marie saw in front of her very eyes how the joyful and generous man she'd spent more than three decades with, could fall victim to bouts of acute anxiety and severe depression. There were times when it seemed as if Trevor was in charge, like when he was handcrafting something artistic in the back garden or going on a lengthy bike ride with Marie but there were others where his demons got the better of him, as they do of all of us from time to time. On June 21st, 2017, Trevor vanished. On the first day of summer, Friday, June 21st, 2013, Brookelyn Farthing went with her sister to obtain her driver's license. She then went to a birthday party for a family member, and, that night, went to a party in a rural field in Berea, Kentucky to celebrate her graduation with classmates. Her sister and her friend abandoned her, so, pretty soon, Brookelyn was looking for a ride home. She found one, an older guy, Joshua Hensley, but the 23-year-old did not exactly take her home. Instead, he took her to his house that was being foreclosed on. After numerous text messages to friends and family, Brookelyn's phone went silent, and the circumstances surrounding her disappearance were more than suspicious.17-year-old Paige Johnson was from Florence, Kentucky. She was very close with her sister, Britney. Both Britney and Paige struggled with substance abuse and had a child very young. On the night of September 22nd, 2010, Paige got into a car with a friend by the name of Jacob Bumpiss. She was supposed to see her sister later that night, but she never arrived. On June 22, 2013, Brookelyn S. Farthing, known to her family and friends as Brooke, was last seen at a home on Dillon Court in Berea, KY. The last text sent from her phone was at 5:30 a.m. Massive searches have been conducted by friends, family and law enforcement in the area surrounding the home but no evidence has been found.  It has been nearly ten years and the case seems to be no closer to a conclusion than it was on the weekend that Brooke went missing.
