Aujourd'hui ça a beaucoup changé.” This episode is all about a good sandwich, piled high with flavourful marinated and grilled pork, fresh veggies, a quick pickle and peppers.* It's a bánh mì - a Vietnamese sub sandwich. *Cilantro is optional, if you're a Princess like Erin. A Bánh Mì Sandwich is a fusion of Vietnamese and French cuisine that apparently originated in Saigon in the 1950s. Our bánh mì sandwich layers grilled pork tenderloin, crunchy pickled carrot and radish, fresh cucumbers slices, jalapeño peppers - plus lots of fresh cilantro if you're Heather - and not a speck of the nasty stuff if you're Erin. And don't forget siracha mayo and maggi sauce. All this is piled on a lightly toasted baguette. We discuss our issue with the way ginger is often listed as an ingredient in recipes (wtf is a "thumb" of ginger, anyway?), what sort of bread works best for this sandwich (this French baguette was too hard and we agree you need a softer roll), and how to make maggi sauce (it's like a super simple Asian-style Worcestershire sauce).Find links ro all the recipes discussed in this episode below. Tu as assez mangé ? Tu vas bien alors ? Programmation musicale- Touch me not, de Dengue Fever- Dreams, de Fleetwood Mac.
We interviewed Linda Nguon (founder of Banh Mi Media) in 2022 on Zoom, and we could tell that we had a lot in common, even though we grew up in different countries and had different backgrounds. We both have a vision of using media to tell stories and give a voice to our Asian communities. Since then Banh Mi Media has done a LOT to bring visibility to Asian French people in France and beyond. When I found out they were coming to California for the Viet Film Fest, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to meet them in person! Linda's partner Sebastian Kong and his co-director/actor Steve Tran were presenting their short film "Je Suis Personne" (I Am No One). I got to see the film online and it is a fascinating look at life in France as a son of Vietnamese immigrants. It was a quick visit, but I think we all felt like family when we parted. It is very heartwarming to know there are so many creative and talented people working to elevate Asian creators and culture around the world! Whats up Bros?! It is still Red October in Philly and the Bro's are working overtime. Between Phillies baseball, Eagles football and Bravo, our schedules are packed and we wouldn't have it any other way. This episode, we cover RHONY and Sai's getting real old real quick. Her and Erin team up against Jessel and we simply cannot seem to move past the fact that Pavit is flying to Vietnam. The group goes mini golfing together at Swingers (interesting name considering Abe and Erins potential future) and once again Sai and Erin force the issue of Vietnam and Jessel's sex life in front of the whole group. Sai has had a tough season and her and Erin's treatment of Jessel is simply bullying at this point and its really not a good look nor is it fun to watch. Thank god for Jenna Lyons and her compassion for Jessel because she's able to understand that Jessel means well, she's just a little clunky in her delivery. But all in all Sai and Erin need to get a hobby and maybe instead of worrying about Pavit and Jessel, because they seem like the realest couple on the show, maybe worry about your own husbands who can't stop talking about sex. Not to mention a rumor has come out regarding Sai and her current husband and how they may have begun their relationship... Then off to Southern Charm and this episode centers around one thing, Taylor and Austen and what has or hasn't happened between them. It takes place largely at Taylor's day chaser event and after diving into the whole situation we have come up with this. This is not a Shep vs Taylor issue, this is a Shep vs Austen issue AND it is a Taylor vs Olivia issue. Both respective parties need to have these convos but we feel as though Shep and Taylor are done, Olivia and Austen are done, this is a breach of friendship conversation more so than a breach of relationship in our opinion due to the timing. The group is all on board that should Austen and Taylor hook up, or if they have previously then it is abhorrent behavior (totes agree) but will the truth ever come out? will we get the whole story? Will JT stop forcing the issue constantly because he has a massive crush on Taylor even though she will literally never give you a shot pal? Who knows! We're almostttt to the finish line on this new RHONY reboot, and the closer we inch towards next week's finale, the more it becomes abundantly clear that no matter what she says or does, Jessel is never going to win…. That, and that Sai just simply doesn't like Jessel - no more, no less. Jessel tries to share something personal trying to connect? Sai says, “Nope - You've insulted me!” Pavit's taking impromptu trips around the world to rack up points? Sai says, “You're a liar and I'm going to heavily insinuate that you're going for more than just a Banh Mi!” Ummm who died and made Sai the judge, jury and executioner of the group?!? And, in case the ladies (and we) were all confused, RHONY is not playing a never ending game of ‘Sai Says' as much as it may seem to the contrary)! We're talking this week's RHONY, y'all…. And if you haven't guessed, we've got some feelings about it!! Enjoy! Also, side note - travelling for points IS a thing and I'd take three days to get pampered on international first class flights without so much as a first though, let alone a second! The banh mi is a staple street food in Vietnam and increasingly popular around the world. But how did it come to be a global sensation? In this edition of The Food Chain, Ruth Alexander discovers how the signature sandwich - invented during the French occupation of Vietnam in the 1950s - went on to become popular around the world after the end of the Vietnam war. Ruth explores the traces of French history and politics found in the sandwich ingredients with former French diplomat to Vietnam Dr Bertrand Hartingh; and she discovers how it's made at Manchester restaurant, Pho Cue. And as Dr Quan Tran of Yale University explains, it's a tale of ingenuity, adaptation and family love. Monica Wong and Quynh Nguyen are the founders of a Little Green Cyclo. I met Monica and Quynh back in the day in 2010 when they first started with their first Vietnamese food truck serving delicious Banh Mi and various dishes. Monica grew up on the East Coast where her family owned one of the first Chinese restaurants in downtown Boston. Monica worked many years in finance, before deciding to get back in the food business. Quynh grew up in Saigon, Vietnam and spent most of her childhood playing table tennis for her country's National Team. After moving to the states working various jobs and Quynh then opened her own a Cajun restaurant in San Jose,CA. Quynh then joined forces with Monica and started Little Green Cyclo. After 13 years of business, Monica and Quinn have created not only one of the original Vietnamese Food trucks in the San Francisco Bay Area; but also now have a full service bistro and their own brand of award winning ready-to-drink Vietnamese Coffee. I really enjoyed sitting down with Monica and Quynh after being a customer for so many years. It was great to have them their story and appreciate them for all their support in my journey as well. Andrea is a prolific cookbook author behind favorites like Vietnamese Food Any Day and Into The Vietnamese Kitchen. Her latest book dives deep into Vietnamese food's rich palate of plants from the land and sea, offering up ingenious recipes for things like homemade vegan fish sauce and a Grand Slam bánh mì breakfast combo. It's such a fun, craving-inducing conversation, and we hope you'll enjoy it. Cookbook author Andrea Nguyen helped change the tone of Vietnamese cookbooks when she published her first in 2006. “They had these long, long ingredient lists that kind of exoticized the cuisine,” Andrea tells Dan. “But we're here in America. Why can't we talk about Vietnamese food in America?” Several cookbooks later, Andrea has continued to demystify Asian cooking without dumbing it down. Over lunch at Sidestreet Pho in Alameda, California, Andrea talks with Dan about her approach to writing recipes, including for her new vegetable-centric cookbook Ever-Green Vietnamese: Super-Fresh Recipes, Starring Plants from Land and Sea. They also meet Hanh Nguyen, owner of Sidestreet Pho and daughter of some of the first Vietnamese restaurant owners in the U.S.To enter to win a copy of Ever-Green Vietnamese, subscribe to our newsletter by May 8.
