In this episode, we cover something I've been DYING to talk about: friendship in virtual reality. When you put on the headset and enter the VR world, what's it like?Today's guest, Wesley Stroupe, is a Friendship IRL podcast listener who recently moved to a small town. Wesley is a self-described anxious person, but especially after the pandemic, he knew community and connection were important in making this new place his home.He found these things in both conventional and unconventional places, from the local Unitarian Universalist Church to Bumble BFF and VRChat. (Are you making connections in VR, too? If so, reach out – I want to hear about it!)As the world changes and new technologies appear, I feel strongly that we share how we use these new tools to fill our social wellness needs. Putting yourself out there can be scary, no matter the method, but as Wesley says here, though it feels like it might kill you, it won't – and eventually, it might lead you to your people. In this episode you'll hear about:Voice memos vs. text messages – the impact of hearing people's voices (the sound, the cadence, the tone) and what they can carry that text messages cannotWesley's story: growing up in a small Southern town and then moving to a small town as a self-described socially anxious personThe benefits of joining a formal community – a church or religious organization, for example – and how this plays in my Wheel of Connection frameworkThe snowball effect of connection: one friend might introduce you to another friend, who might introduce you to other friends, etc.Different platforms Wesley has used to make friends, including Threads, Bumble BFF, and VRchat, and what they've been like for himResources & Links:In this episode, we talk about the Wheel of Connection, which I urge you to check out, and male friendships, which we cover more in-depth in Episodes 31 and 32.Like what you hear? On this week's edition of the Tim May Podcast, Tim shifted his focus to Ewers as he prepares to head to Columbus soon. Joining Tim on the show is Bobby Stroupe, the Founder and President of ATHLETE Performance Enhancement Center (APEC). Over the past 20-plus years, the Texas-based trainer has worked with some of the best athletes in the the country. Stroupe's impressive résumé also includes training more than 30 MLB players, including six All-Stars, in addition to a pair of Heisman Trophy candidates. Ewers is one of Stroupe's most recent clients. Stroupe has trained the five-star quarterback and helped develop him into the No. 1 overall prospect in the country and the highest-ranked commit in Buckeyes history. That includes a workout with Mahomes and Sam Ehlinger just two weeks before Ewers reclassified to the 2021 class. Can Ewers become a legendary Ohio State quarterback? Today’s show welcomes back coach Bobby Stroupe.  Bobby Stroupe is the Founder and President of Athlete Performance Enhancement Center (APEC) and has directed human performance systems for nearly 20 years, working with a full range of athletes from youth to professional. In my search for higher-transfer, holistic methodology in sports performance training, I’ve met few coaches who have covered more bases than Bobby Stroupe.  On our last show, which aired just over a month ago, we talked about several of Bobby’s “unorthodox” methods in training speed, power strength and more in light of athletic needs, and I still had about half of the questions left on my own list to ask him. Bobby is back on the show to cover the rest of the questions we missed last time.  He will discuss his influences and how he got to where he is today as a coach, including some of the mentors and coaches that have influenced the way he trains. Bobby explains how he incorporates heavier strength training into his sessions and how his single set mentality is a huge impactor on performance (and a defining factor of great athletes).   Finally, Bobby shares his views on upper body training, as well as training the foot and the relationship between the two. In the middle of the show, Bobby gets into the “8 factors” by which a strength coach can impact an athlete, which was such gold! I hope you come away from this show as excited as I was about coaching my next training session. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster and Lost Empire Herbs. Our guest today is Bobby Stroupe, founder and president of Athlete Performance Enhancement Center (APEC).  Bobby has directed human performance systems for nearly 20 years.  His coaching ranges from youth athletes to some of the top names in multiple professional sports, including first round picks, as well as Super Bowl and World Series champions.  Bobby is well-known for his work in the physical preparation realm of Patrick Mahomes, quarterback of the recent Superbowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. After doing 235 episodes of this podcast, and opening up my eyes to more and more of the performance space, I’m always excited to find those coaches who are spearheading creative and effective training methods in athletic performance transfer.  When I recently watched Bobby Stroupe’s presentation at the recent “Track Football Consortium” regarding his methods in working with Patrick Mahomes, I was like a kid in a candy shop, viewing training methods that replicated many time and space requirements of sport play without being mechanical or contrived. Bobby is not only a holistic and open minded coach, but he is also an incredibly thorough and detailed thinker.  There are so many points of carry-over in what Bobby does, I believe that studying his work is essential if we are to reach the point of getting our training to truly transfer to the field of play.  Bobby achieves this transfer in a way that still pays homage to traditional principles of force development and human performance, but is able to add in the tri-planar and chaotic nature of what athletes will encounter in sport. On today’s podcast, Bobby gets into a variety of his “unorthodox” training methods, including locomotion complexes, tri-planar plyometrics and strength training, complex training, long-term development, and athlete autonomy.  Again, with the interest of transfer to sport in mind, any aspiring coach should be familiar with the work of Bobby Stroupe and Team APEC. With 25 years of industry experience, Jocelyn is a leading expert in the health market. Jocelyn thrives on uniting the disciplines of planning, programming, branding, and facility management with cohesive, comforting interior design. She is especially invested in understanding the unique needs of all users – patients, visitors, providers and staff – in their healthcare settings.. Jocelyn derives inspiration for spatial and interior design work from many typologies but finds various themes in nature particularly fascinating – patterns and color, relationships between humans and the natural world, the changing phases of plant life. These studies provide Jocelyn with keen insights about placemaking and the design needs of people in these living spaces. As a result, her interiors evoke an optimism that creates positive experiences for patients, family, and staff. Jocelyn’s colleagues and clients appreciate her approachable, collaborative and genuine approach – and her intuitive approach to creating healing environments. The importance of using both the right and left sides of the brain when designing a large scale human space. How to get creative with patient-centered design decisions that meet certain criteria, including the budget. How to have confidence when working with your strategic partners. The process Jocelyn Stroupe and her firm Cannon Design used in the design of the 3.5-million-square-foot Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), one of the largest healthcare projects recently constructed in North America. How Jocelyn and her team at Cannon Design honored the natural environment of the island for the replacement facility project for Nantucket Cottage Hospital, in Nantucket Island, Mass., and how they honored two beach trees in the process. Within one year of designing the 126,00-square-foot Kettering Cancer Center, Kettering’s market share grew, employee engagement improved from the 54th to 70th percentile, and patient satisfaction is now in the 90th percentile. In today's episode of the Mind Set Game Podcast, I sat down with Bobby Stroupe.  Bobby is the Founder and President of ACCELERATE Performance Enhancement Center (APEC).  Coach Stroupe has directed human performance systems for nearly 20 years while expanding his influence as an author, consultant, speaker, and educator. His experience includes working with school systems, collegiate teams, professional teams, businesses, corporate fitness and individuals alike. His coaching ranges from youth athletes to some of the top names in multiple professional sports including 1st round picks, Super Bowl and World Series champions. APEC has been a part of developing over 20 athletes that trained in the APEC system in grade school and continued all the way to the professional ranks. Among many accomplishments by his athletes, Bobby has been credited with supporting arguably the strongest arms in the game of baseball and football. Coach Stroupe has been featured as a top trainer for multiple sports and athletic performances on ESPN, Sports Illustrated, USA Today, NFL and MLB network, STACK, Bleacher Report, and many more.  Bobby has been asked to present on various human performance topics at notable coaches clinics nationally and internationally, including the NIKE Roundtable. Stroupe launched the CAPEC certification at Nike World Headquarters in addition to doing work with Nike Training and the Nike Young Athlete division. Bobby serves on the Advisory Committee for Wellness and Exercise at Tyler Junior College. Stroupe and staff have powered strength & conditioning for TJC baseball during their four times in a row National Championship run.   As an entrepreneur, Stroupe and team built APEC from a grass field in 2005 to today, a worldwide training leader in human performance. Bobby serves as the president for APEC, making strategic decisions, designing training systems, and guiding an elite team of coaches that power two locations (Tyler, Fort Worth).   For more information about Bobby check out his website www.apecgo.com and connect with his Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. "Oakhurst Presbyterian Church is unremarkable on the outside, but the congregation on the inside is quite remarkable. People from the most divergent backgrounds - middle class professionals, blue-collar and pink-collar workers, welfare recipients, old, young, and very young, black, white, Asian, gay and straight. All seem to feel comfortable there and speak their minds." Ted Clark, All Things Considered Oakhurst Presbyterian Church, in Decatur Georgia, celebrated its 90th birthday in September. The church, led by husband-wife team Nibs Stroupe and Caroline Leach, is famous for its depictions of both a black and a white Jesus, and numerous national publications, including Time magazine, The New York Times and The Christian Science Monitor, have reported on the dedication of the church and its leaders to racial diversity. My guest was Rev. Nibs Stroupe. We discussed the 90th Anniversary of Oakurst Presbyterian Church, the decision that was made in the late 1980s to repaint one of the stained glass images of Jesus from white to black, the committment of the church congregation to diversity and inclusiveness, and the book, "O Lord, Hold Our Hands: How a Church Thrives in a Multicultural World," which Rev. Stroupe co-wrote with his wife. This program origianally aired on 10/24/11. Contact information: www.oakhurstpresbyterian.org or 404-378-6284
