Welcome to Episode 56 of TableSetters! This week, we're diving deep into the latest MLB news, including Hall of Fame inductions, major signings, and updates from key teams as the offseason continues. We kick things off with the exciting news of Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, and Billy Wagner being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Ichiro's near-unanimous selection, Sabathia's dominant career, and Wagner's elite closer status make this a class to remember. We reflect on their legendary careers and what their inductions mean for the game of baseball. Next, we break down the Blue Jays' big offseason move, signing Anthony Santander to a five-year, $92.5 million deal. We discuss how this addition strengthens Toronto's lineup, adds power, and creates flexibility, as well as the team's remaining potential targets despite the hefty contract. On the Dodgers' front, we analyze the state of their bullpen, including Michael Kopech's forearm inflammation and the team's cautious approach as they bolster their relief options with Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates, and Blake Treinen. We explore the depth and flexibility they have in place to maintain a strong bullpen and cover potential injuries. Follow us for more:

It's Halloween. So you know there's going to be plenty of tricks & treats as I roundup all of what's happening in the world of sports. On deck: (6:38) After a mention of having to pardon myself if I'm sounding a bit hoarse, I regroup to unpack the miniseries that took place on FOX at Yankee Stadium last night in Game 5. I'll review Games 3 & 4 as well, but the Dodgers overcome a five run deficit and Yankee miscues abound to win the franchise's eighth World Series, 7-6. I'll throw bouquets at manager Dave Roberts, series MVP Freddie Freeman and reliever Blake Treinen for their performance in the game! As for the Yankees? A bitter defeat which erased the good fortune of avoiding getting swept the night before. How this will affect the team, especially with some key free agents (Juan Soto, Gerrit Cole, Gleyber Torres, among others) Lastly, my personal motto and breakdown when the Yankees don't record the last out of the season, taking shots at some (not ALL) of their fans and saying goodbye to radio announcer, John Sterling! It's another winter that I can sleep in peace after another year without winning a title! (42:56) NFL Week 9 has a rather light schedule, although there are a couple of games to watch (DET-GB, DEN-BAL) My beloved Steelers have a bye, but at 6-2, in first place in the AFC North, why their record is deceiving? KC made a good trade for a pass rusher (Joshua Uche) and a puzzling trade for Baltimore as they acquire WR Diontae Johnson, when they need defensive help in the worst way. (51:50) A huge college football matchup at high noon on Saturday as Ohio State will go to Happy Valley to play Penn State. Why now is the time for the Nittany Lions to win a big game in the Big 10? (54:51) There are a couple of injuries of note in the NBA (Steph Curry & Scottie Barnes). The Celtics lost their first game of the season with an OT loss at Indiana. Do I get geeked up for Bronny James scoring his first ever NBA points in Cleveland of all places? And do I need to stress Dwyane Wade's statue in Miami? (58:11) The NHL suffered an enormous loss (well, just for 2-3 weeks) as Oilers superstar Connor McDavid will be out with a lower body (ankle) injury as they fight off of a slow start. The Winnipeg Jets finally lose and the San Jose Sharks finally won, in fact, two in a row. 2024 National League Championship Series Games Three, Four, and Five @ Citi Field - Queens, New York, NY Game Six @ Dodger Stadium - Los Angeles, CA Heading to New York, the series is tied at a game apiece. The Dodgers pummeled the Met in game one, but the Mets responded with a 7-3 win behind a leadoff Francisco Lindor homer and a Mark Vientos grand slam. The fans at Citi Field is raring to cheer on their beloved Mets, but the Dodgers big bats will look to silence the raucous crowd early. Shohei Ohtani has yet to have a hit with the bases empty, but he's doing plenty of damage with runners on base. Dating back to the regular season, he is 16 for his last 19 with runners in scoring position… that's just absurd. Mookie Betts and Max Muncy continue to swing hot bats, and with Freddie Freeman hobbled with an ankle injury, it will be Tommy Edman of all people stepping into the cleanup spot. This is a deep lineup that grinds out at bat after at bat, exhausting their opposing pitchers and forcing mistakes. The pitching plan is always a bit nebulous for manager Dave Roberts, who lacks reliable starting pitching, but has numerous quality options out of the pen. Evan Phillips, Blake Treinen, Michael Kopech, Anthony Banda, and others have strung together zeroes across multiple games, though they will need at least something from their starters. Buehler will get the ball in game three, Yamamoto in game four, Flaherty in game five, and likely a bullpen game if it gets to six back in LA. It will take a team effort to bring the Dodgers back to the World Series, and these guys will live up to that task. The Mets are feeling good heading into game three, as they should on this magical run they've been on. Carlos Mendoza will send Luis Severino to the mound for game three, then José Quintana for game four, and likely David Peterson for game five. If they can extend the series, they will be quite confident with their ace Sean Manaea on the hill, with either a shot to clinch the series or force a decisive game seven. But if the Mets aim to win this thing, the bats are gonna need to step up. Apart from the six run outburst early in game two, the Mets have been befuddled by the Dodger bullpen (just like San Diego). With a trip to the World Series on the line, we shall see whether the Mets will continue to conjure up playoff magic, or if the Dodgers can find a way to break it. Welcome back to TableSetters, your go-to podcast for all things baseball! Steve and Devin are here, diving deep into the thrilling World Series matchup between the Yankees and Dodgers, but first, we want to take a moment to honor the late Fernando Valenzuela. Just days before the World Series, the legendary pitcher passed away at the age of 63. His impact on baseball, especially during his iconic run with the Dodgers in 1981, is immeasurable. Valenzuela not only won the Cy Young Award and Rookie of the Year in that season but also became a cultural icon, particularly for the Latino community. As we reflect on this somber news, we'll remember Valenzuela's distinctive delivery and his remarkable contributions to the game. His passing serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history and legacy that intertwines with the World Series, especially as the Dodgers prepare to face the Yankees again—an event that he was a significant part of in the past. Now, shifting gears back to the World Series, we'll dive into the excitement surrounding this historic matchup. The Yankees and Dodgers are clashing in the Fall Classic for the first time in 43 years, and we'll break down what makes this series so significant. We'll start with the **pitching matchups**: Gerrit Cole is set to start for the Yankees, bringing postseason experience with him. We'll discuss his recent performance and how he can lead the Yankees to victory. The Dodgers are navigating injury challenges with key players like Clayton Kershaw, and we'll examine their rotation options. **Star players** like Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani are poised to make headlines, and we'll highlight their postseason journeys as they aim for their first championship rings. We'll also cover the latest injury updates and their implications for both teams. As we analyze the **pressure on these stars**, we'll discuss what's at stake for Judge and Ohtani in this high-stakes moment. Next, we'll turn our focus to the Dodgers' bullpen, which has been crucial to their success this postseason. Key performers like Evan Phillips and Blake Treinen have stepped up in critical situations, showcasing the depth of their pitching staff. In a heartfelt segment, Devin will take a moment to **eulogize the special season for the New York Mets**. After a rollercoaster year filled with ups and downs, Devin will reflect on the team's promising potential and what fans can look forward to in the future. We'll also touch on the hypothetical move of the Chicago White Sox to Nashville, discussing the challenges and opportunities this situation presents for both the team and the city. Finally, we'll wrap up with a look at the Cleveland Guardians and their successful season under first-year manager Stephen Vogt, emphasizing their goals for 2025. And hey, remember to follow us on Instagram and Twitter @tablesetterspod for exclusive updates, behind-the-scenes content, and interactive fan polls. We want to hear from you! So grab your popcorn and settle in as we ignite the conversation only on TableSetters, where every inning brings a new story, and every pitch sets the stage for baseball's greatest moments. Let's play ball!
On this episode of the Three-Inning Save podcast, the Dodgers finished the job at home, beating the Mets in Game 6 of the NLCS to clinch their first pennant at Dodger Stadium since 1988. The Dodgers deployed a bullpen game in Game 6, relying on all high-leverage relievers to cover all nine innings. Four pitchers recorded more than three outs, and Blake Treinen closed out the win in the final two innings. Bulk reliever Brent Honeywell was an unsung hero as well, eating innings in Games 2 and 5 to keep the others fresh. LA's offense provided the cover with another double-digit outburst, led by surprise NLCS MVP Tommy Edman, who tied Dodgers records with 11 hits and 11 RBI during the series. Shohei Ohtani and Max Muncy each set Dodgers records by reaching base 17 times. As a team, the Dodgers walked more in the NLCS than any team in postseason series, and had the highest-scoring series by any National League team ever. Now, it's on to face the Yankees in the World Series, which will begin Friday at Dodger Stadium. The Three-Inning Save is part of the Fans First Sports Network.
