YOU'RE GONNA LISTEN TO THE BASS PLAYER. The Spindle is back for the new year, and this week on the show Marc and John drop the needle on the Melvins' single "Night Goat" b/w "Adolescent Wet Dream." Released in 1992 by Amphetamine Reptile Records, this 7" exemplifies the odd sophistication of the Melvins, reveling in extreme volume, absurdist poetry, and overblown attitude. The single's A-side, "Night Goat," would go on to become one of the band's signature songs; it was re-recorded for the band's major label debut Houdini and is a longstanding staple of the band's raucous live shows. The B-side is curious, too: the original comes from garage punk band Pussy Galore, whose leader Jon Spencer would go on to form The Blues Explosion. Is it grunge? Is it doom? Is it alternative? Who cares: it's Melvins. Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. More podcasts and videos at WASTOIDS.com | Follow us on Instagram and YouTube.

This week on TBP's new music show: Andy Cooper from Ugly Duckling has no egrets, Osees, Oh Sees and/or Thee Oh Sees are caught by the fuzz and James Williamson and Denis Tek are offering Two To One on their album sounding like Stooges-meets-Birdman 40 years on (get on at that price).

Season 3, Episode 48 – This week, we’re drinking beer with our friend, Oskar. Oskar Blues Brewery is one of the earliest modern craft breweries to exclusively use cans for packaging their beer. Everything from lager to imperial stout goes into cans short, tall, and wide. Oskar Blues even invented the “Crowler”, a 32 ounce growler made out of an aluminum can. Not only are they ahead of their time with their packaging, they also make some killer beer. Oskar Blues Beers The seven beers on the show this week are but a small representation of what Oskar Blues brews. They recently debuted barrel-aged Ten Fidy in tall cans (which Jason coincidentally drank all to himself the night before the recording of this episode), as well as their new 19.2 ounce (holy moly!) “Stove Pipe” cans. Dale’s Pale Ale is by far the most ubiquitous of Oskar Blues’ offerings, followed by the deliciously contrasting imperial stout, Ten Fidy. Oskar Blues is a beer geek’s brewery–they can do it all, and they do it all quite well. It’s safe to assume that if you’ve never tried anything from them, you’ll probably be pretty happy with at least one beer they make when you do try something. (…also, you can use their cans to smoke weed when you’re done drinking the beer!) BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Sugar Blue cut his teeth performing with blues greats Roosevelt Sykes, Brownie McGhee, Victoria Spivey and later put the funky harmonica riff in the Rolling Stones famous hit single “Miss You.” He would record on 3 Rolling Stone Albums. During the 80’s, following a brief stint in Europe and recording with Louisiana Red, Blue moved to Chicago to soak in the rich harmonica scene led by Big Walter Horton, Carey Bell, James Cotton and Junior Wells. While there, he was recruited into the Willie Dixon Band and recorded on his Grammy-winning album, Hidden Charms and also collected his own Grammy trophy for the album Blues Explosion. He released his first studio album in many years called, Voyage, available from MC Records.

Jon Spencer is tired of talking about music. Perhaps it’s the fact that he’s been talking about it professionally ever since Pussy Galore emerged from the garages of Washington DC 30 years back. Or maybe it’s because he’s knee deep in the press junket for Blues Explosion’s 10th full-length, Freedom Tower No Wave Dance Party 2015. I met the musician at his practice space, a nondescript spot, located in a lower-Manhattan basement down a dank flight of stair a few days after I managed to catch him during the final show of his five boroughs tour. It was an explosion ending at a brewery in Astoria, Queens, which found Spencer unraveling and wearing a giant American flag and hanging from a balcony while performing daring feats on rock and roll. As excited as I am to talk about what I’ve just seen however, the singer really comes alive when the topic of comics arise, as he discusses collaborations with cartoonists like Paul Pope and Tony Millionaire, and his love for the magazine Heavy Metal, whose back page rock writing turned him onto rock and roll oddities like The Residents. Spencer also happily discusses the late night horror films that introduced him to the otherworldly sound of the theremin that has become tentpole feature of the group’s unhinged sound. By the end of the conversation, he pulls out a backpack full of the week’s scores at the nearby comics shop, Forbidden Planet.
