Nick welcomes music journalist Jim Ryan from Forbes.com back to the podcast to talk about the new Earth, Wind & Fire documentary and his recent interviews with Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil and Jon Spencer of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. They also review recent concerts by George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Phil Manzanera, and Santana with The Doobie Brothers. Along the way, they discuss the parking headaches at Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre and the troubling trend of outdoor venues keeping shows going during dangerous weather. Later, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to read listener emails and talk about the new Martin Short documentary. That conversation leads to a deep dive into some of Short's wildest work, including the cult favorite Clifford. They also chat about Top Gun, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers, and a handful of other topics that somehow all connect by the end. Trust us, it makes sense when you hear it. [Ep 464]

Today's guest has made a career playing with some of the most avant garde musicians in the world. But he didn't start off with music in mind. Welcome drummer Bob Bert to the podcast. He grew up in a house that wasn't super musical. In fact, his father, Angelo, was more into sports than music. He was so into sports that he won the Heisman trophy in 1943. But Bob had other ideas. Bob played some drums but was more interested in fine art, eventually printing for Andy Warhol. His music career began when his wife volunteered him for an impromptu gig. Bob talks about how he got the Sonic Youth gig, was fired, and then rehired. He talks about some other projects he was in and how Thurston Moore named one of them. Bob discusses his time in Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks, Jon Spencer & The Hitmakers, Lydia Lunch's Retrovirus, and more. Bob has released his first true solo album called Beach Bongo Bloodbath. And the consensus is…it's a fun album. It's a mix of covers and originals and highlights Bob's singular take on music, like his guitar-free version of Mountain's Mississippi Queen. It's out on Bar None Records. Find it, buy, it, stream it, whatever you need to do. And follow Bob @therealbobbert on Instagram. Follow us @PerformanceAnx and grab some merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Or just slide us some money at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. bob Bert in conversation with David Eastaugh  https://therealbobbert.bandcamp.com/album/beach-bongo-bloodbath Many music gourmandizers know the name “Bob Bert” from his stint as drummer for Sonic Youth in their formative years. He also beat car gas tanks for Pussy Galore. In the years since, Bob has recorded albums and toured the world with Bewitched, Action Swingers, Chrome Cranks, Knoxville Girls, Five Dollar Priest, and in more recent times Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, coming full circle playing metal percussion with fellow Pussy Galore alumnus Jon Spencer in his HITmakers.  With Beach Bongo Bloodbath Bob finally steps out under his own name with his first true solo album. For this outing he mixes original material with extensive re-workings of a number of covers to create a veritable soundtrack for the B-movie of his life.  Surprisingly for a guy who has slammed away for some very noisy guitar outfits, this album has absolutely NO guitars; once you hear his beat-centric take on Mountain's "Mississippi Queen," you will never hear that song the same way again. Bob creates a new world of sound utilizing a variety of drums and percussion as well as a diverse array of keyboards and theremin. The results suggest Sandy Nelson playing with the Flying Lizards on their greatest hits collection of Kraut Rock influenced Cramps covers!  The six originals and eight covers play to his love of campy teenage horror flicks, art damaged punk fuk-u-ness and Warholian underground groover vibes. In fact, let's cue up some tracks from the album to help tell the Bob Bert story.

Genre Is Death, a limitation-destroying noise band formed by Ty Varesi (guitar, vox) and Tayler Lee (bass, vox), release their debut album, Attractive People out May 1 2026 on In The Red Records.  Their sound is abrasive yet melodic, using heavy distortion, dissonant riffs, and reverberating vocals to create music that feels both minimal and overwhelming. Their newest record Attractive People, recorded by legendary sound producer Martin Bisi, prods and pushes its listener with tongue in cheek lyrics that accuse and indict their audience, cacophonous guitar shrieks of power and madness, and bass lines that oscillate from funky to erratic dissonance. While comparisons to Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks are inevitable (and quite welcome), Genre is Death build's on NYC's legacy without repeating it… eschewing nostalgia and nihilism in favor of total sonic liberation.  The duo moved from the south to NYC in August of 2023 looking for something more than their mundane lifestyle of day drinking and playing doom metal in friends' basements… Their move to NYC, coupled with their desire to express something, anything, led to the inception of Genre is Death. The pair hit the ground running, playing anywhere and everywhere they could… However, it was only after a chance encounter with 80s noise forerunners Live Skull that the pair was introduced to the strange underbelly of NYC noise and began playing regular gigs with The Art Gray Noizz Quintet and Lydia Lunch. In 2025 the pair played toured with Gogol Bordello, embarked on their first East Coast tour, and played gigs with Cherubs, Bush Tetras, and Jon Spencer. The album is out now. Order a copy here.

It's Die Hard on Alcatraz! This time on the show, Phil and Liam attempt not to explode with excitement as they discuss Michael Bay's 1996 all-star action classic THE ROCK, with special guest Bilge Ebiri! When a group of highly trained Marines led by decorated general Francis X. Hummel (Ed Harris) take over Alcatraz and threaten to launch VX poison gas missiles at mainland San Francisco, the government are forced to turn to two unlikely heroes: eccentric FBI chemical weapons specialist Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage) and enigmatic prisoner John Patrick Mason (Sean Connery), the only man to have ever escape from the legendary penitentiary. Phil, Liam and Bilge discuss their memories of seeing this iconic movie upon its initial release, and their respective relationships with it over the years since. They lay out the film's numerous connections to DIE HARD in the ‘Die Hard DNA' section and dig deep on its under-discussed thematics, particularly with regards to its complex exploration of patriotism. As always, they analyze the film's heroes, Mason and Goodspeed - two highly innovative characters both played by iconic actors - and debate whether Ed Harris' General Hummel might be the greatest action movie ‘villain' of all time. They also talk about as many members of the film's astonishing supporting cast as time will allow, including the likes of David Morse, Michael Biehn, William Forsythe, Jon Spencer, Tony Todd, Claire Forlani, Vanessa Marcil, Todd Louiso, Gregory Sporleder and many more! Finally, the guys break into the ‘Die Hard Oscars' to dispense some action movie awards, and wrap things up with a particularly tricky edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! THE ROCK trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3qcNyjj9ZQAt the time of release, THE ROCK is streaming on Fubo and FXNow in the US and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, Fandango and all the usual platforms!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

But there's really very few songwriters whose music has mattered to me during the course of my life quite like the many songs written by David Gedge, the sole constant in The Wedding Present for almost forty years now.  This is an episode I'm really grateful I got to add to the ever growing podography and while the majority of the following conversation concerns the group's coming 24 Songs album - a collection of all the tracks from 2022's 7” single a month series due on May 19th - we squeeze a lot more into our thirty minutes or so together; the recruitment of Sleeper guitarist Jon Stewart into the Wedding Present ranks, the confirmation that David does indeed request a dog on the Wedding Present rider, comic books, the brilliance of Brighton... YOU'RE GONNA LISTEN TO THE BASS PLAYER. The Spindle is back for the new year, and this week on the show Marc and John drop the needle on the Melvins' single "Night Goat" b/w "Adolescent Wet Dream." Released in 1992 by Amphetamine Reptile Records, this 7" exemplifies the odd sophistication of the Melvins, reveling in extreme volume, absurdist poetry, and overblown attitude.  The single's A-side, "Night Goat," would go on to become one of the band's signature songs; it was re-recorded for the band's major label debut Houdini and is a longstanding staple of the band's raucous live shows. The B-side is curious, too: the original comes from garage punk band Pussy Galore, whose leader Jon Spencer would go on to form The Blues Explosion. Is it grunge? Is it doom? Is it alternative? Who cares: it's Melvins. Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. More podcasts and videos at WASTOIDS.com | Follow us on Instagram and YouTube.

Sam Quartin is an actor, activist, and frontwoman for The Bobby Lees, which she founded after discovering her future bandmates at a music school in upstate New York. The two discuss her recent role in Candy Land, a film about the underground world of truck stop sex workers. Sam tells Rhett about the impact that Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way had on her life, shares her process for boosting self-confidence, and explains why she's opted out of having a digital profile.A band that proves it pays to think young, the Bobby Lees are a frantic garage punk act from Woodstock, New York, whose sound is fast, fresh, energetic, and filled with a snotty sense of fun. Boasting a revved-up attitude and a level of precision that matches the tempos without making them sound stiff, the Bobby Lees made a bracing debut on their 2018 album Beauty Pageant. They got tighter, speedier, and rowdier on 2020's Skin Suit, produced by Jon Spencer, and they developed a more polished but no less powerful approach for their third LP, 2022's Bellevue. She's working with Jon Spencer regularly now who also produced the bands 2nd record before working with Vance Powell on Bellevue. “I've always been in more than one band,” Janet Weiss notes. Even during the nearly two-and-a-half decades she spent as one-third of Sleater Kinney, she's kept busy. Since 1993, she's been half of Quasi and had overlapping stints with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks and Wild Flag – to make no mention of the albums she's performed for indie rock darlings like The Shins and Bright Eyes. When we sat down to speak, she was prepping for a joint tour as Quasi and the drummer for Jon Spencer's latest project, the Hitmakers. The shows coincide with the release of Cockroach In A Small Town, the debut LP from Slang, a project that also features Drew Grow, Kathy Foster and Anita Lee Elliot. It's a lot, all at once, but after rehabbing from a serious car accident, followed by a two-year pandemic fueled hiatus, Weiss is more than ready to get back at it. Rum Bar Records and Red On Red Records have their usual great projects. Topping it off is a fabulous (and free!) tribute to Guided By Voices featuring a number of The Ledge regulars. I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion!  For more info, including setlits, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com
