Literacy in a Long Blues Note: Black Women's Literature and Music in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries by Coretta M. Pittman (University Press of Mississippi, 2022) traces the evolution of Black women's literacy practices from 1892 to 1934.  Pittman explores two distinct but related eras of Black women's writing—the Women's Era of the 1890s and early 1900s, and the New Negro Movement of the 1920s and 1930s. Casting a wide net, Pittman analyzes fiction, nonfiction, and dramatic writing by Black women along with songs performed and written by classic blues singers like Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Victoria Spivey. When a young Black woman came to town  in the 1920's came to town to make a blues record, she accomplished that and more. Having had a successful recording career in her youth, she decided to form a record label that would keep older blues musicians recording. Just press play to hear the whole story. —— — Click on search links to see if there are episodes with related content: Andrew Wanko, Black History, Women's History, Music, Business, Arts, Entertainment, and Culture, Podcast Transcript: I'm Andrew Wanko, Public Historian of the Missouri Historical Society, and Here's history on 88.1, KDHX. —— In 1926, teenager Victoria Spivey sat alone and nervous on a 600-mile, one-way train ride bound for St. Louis. It was a city bigger than any she'd ever seen during her Texas childhood, and a place where she knew no one. But more than anything, Victoria Spivey wanted to make a hit blues record, and St. Louis was where to do it. ——— At the DeLuxe Music Shoppe on Market Street, she sat down at the store's piano, and belted out her chilling original song “Black Snake Blues.” Within a week the obvious hit was being pressed in New York City, and it would sell countless thousands of copies within the year. She became a staff songwriter for the St. Louis Publishing Company, and in 1927 scored her next smash hit. The socially conscious “T.B. Blues” chronicled the discrimination faced by the era's victims of tuberculosis. ——— With an animated voice and distinct nasal moan she called her “tiger squall,” Victoria Spivey captivated 1920s listeners across dozens more records. When the Great Depression dissolved recording opportunities, Spivey pivoted to become an actress. In 1929 she starred in King Vidor's film Hallelujah!, among the earliest major Hollywood productions to feature an all-black cast. The following April, she graced the front cover of The Crisis, the official publication of the NAACP.  ——— Victoria Spivey retired from show business by 1950, but as the folk revival of the 1960s took hold, a new generation of fans on both sides of the Atlantic were seeking her out. In 1962 she founded Spivey Records, and got other older blues musicians – including former St. Louisans Lonnie Johnson and Big Joe Williams - recording again for new audiences. On one Spivey Records recording session, an almost completely unknown young folk singer named Bob Dylan provided backing vocals and harmonica. He wouldn't remain unknown for long, and he and Victoria remained good friends. You can find a picture of them side by side on the jacket of Dylan's 1970 album New Morning, released just six years before Victoria Spivey passed away. ——— Here's History is a joint production of the Missouri Historical Society and KDHX. I'm Andrew Wanko, and this is 88.1 KDHX, St. Louis. ———

There have been many power couples throughout history, and one of those couples were instrumental in the blues community in St. Louis in the early part of the 20th century. Through their music shop, this black couple made a huge impact and helped many people, get gigs and get recording contracts. Just press play to hear the whole story.  ——— Click on search links to see if there are episodes with related content: Andrew Wanko, Black History, Arts, Entertainment, and Culture, Music, ——— Podcast Transcript: I'm Andrew Wanko, Public Historian of the Missouri Historical Society, and Here's History on 88-one, KDHX. ——— While we often see famous musicians depicted as “lone geniuses,” even the most towering of musical talents have always had help somewhere along the way. For the early blues musicians of St. Louis, one of the best places to find help was the husband-and-wife team of Jesse and Edith Johnson. ——— When music promoter Jesse Johnson opened Market Street's DeLuxe Music Shoppe in 1919, it sat right beside the Booker T. Washington Theatre, the city's largest entertainment venue for Black St. Louisans. The DeLuxe Music Shoppe offered records for sale, but it also functioned as an audition booth and networking hangout for aspiring musicians. Record label representatives often scouted the store, and Jesse Johnson used his extensive industry connections to get dozens of local performers gigs and record deals. ——— In the mid-1920s, Jesse Johnson married local St. Louis blues singer Edith North. She co-ran the DeLuxe Music Shoppe, serving as judge and mentor to the musicians testing out their material. One of them was young Victoria Spivey, who in 1926 took a 500-mile train ride from Texas to St. Louis just to try and make a hit record. Victoria belted out her chilling original song “Black Snake Blues” for Edith, and five days later, the record was being pressed in New York City. It would sell 150,000 copies in its first year. ——— In addition to running the DeLuxe Music Shoppe, Jesse Johnson used his promotional sway to break the color line on the city's excursion boats, getting Monday nights set aside for black patrons. He also brought in national acts like Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald to perform in St. Louis for Black audiences. ——— The important role of the DeLuxe Music Shoppe in the early St. Louis blues scene reminds us that the music we hear is always shaped by a historic context. For St. Louis blues legends like Peetie Wheatstraw, Victoria Spivey, Roosevelt Sykes, and Henry Townsend - and for all the artists those musicians later inspired - the helping hands of Jesse and Edith Johnson were vital in getting their voices heard. ——— Here's history is a joint production of the Missouri Historical Society and KDHX.  I'm Andrew Wanko and this is 88.1 KDHX St. Louis. ———

In this episode we welcome the delightful Kid Congo Powers, all the way from his home in Tucson, and ask him to talk about his former lives in the Gun Club, the Cramps and the Bad Seeds — as detailed in the riveting new memoir Some New Kind of Kick. The man born Brian Tristan looks back to his teen fanboy years from Frank Zappa to the New York Dolls, plus his memories of the L.A. glitter scene at Rodney's English Disco. He describes how it felt — as a gay Mexican American — to be a misfit among mainly white misfits on the punk scenes in L.A. and New York. He also explains how the Gun Club was conceived after he met Jeffrey Lee Pierce while queuing for a 1979 Pere Ubu show at the Whisky. We hear how Kid was then headhunted by the Cramps' Lux and Ivy, and what it was like to be part of their ghoulish B-movie aesthetic. We similarly learn how he was recruited (and "cast") as one of Nick Cave's drug-addled Bad Seeds in mid-'80s Berlin. From the decline and premature death of Jeffrey Lee Pierce — via Kid's own eventual long-term sobriety — we shift into the rarefied and erudite world of Brian Eno, an iconic glam influence on the young Brian Tristan. Clips from Mark Sinker's 1992 audio interview with pop's resident egghead are heard, leading in turn to discussion of Eno's collaborations with Robert Fripp and Toby Amies' remarkable new King Crimson documentary.Mark talks us through pieces about the Stones' 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' (1968), classic-blues septuagenarian Victoria Spivey(1975), the Police (1979) and Joe Bataan & Arthur Baker (1996) after which Jasper concludes the episode with quotes from pieces on bodyguard-to-the-stars Michael Francis (2003) and the "rise and rise" of Pharrell Williams (2015).Many thanks to special guest Kid Congo Powers; Some New Kind of Kick is available this week in all good bookshops. For my second Queer Pride episode this month, I offer you a panoply of blues and other popular music sung by women of color over the past 100 years and over a wide range of the LGBTQ spectrum. The focus is on the queer and bisexual women of color who enlivened the Harlem blues scene in the 1920s, including the newly popular and celebrated Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, as well as other vital and iconoclastic singers of that era, including Bricktop, Lucille Bogan, Alberta Hunter, Ethel Waters, Victoria Spivey, Lucille Hegamin, and the fascinating Gladys Bentley. The net is further extended to include jazz (Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae, Dinah Washington), pop, rock ‘n' roll (Big Mama Thornton), gospel (Sister Rosetta Tharpe), cabaret (Mabel Mercer, Joséphine Baker), soul (Carolyn Franklin) and folk (Joan Armatrading, Meshell Ndegeocello, Toshi Reagon, and Laura Love). Of course in this episode the musical categories are as flexible as are the sexual and gender boundaries, so expect to see a lot of genre-hopping as well among these subversive, innovative, and pathbreaking women of color. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. At Countermelody's core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Dylankvinnorna del 1. Hur har kvinnor påverkat Bob Dylan?

Tollans musikaliska

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 11, 2017 40:04

Svaret får ni i Dylankvinnorna. Den första spelades in 1964 av Linda Mason med titeln How Many Seas Must A White Dove Sail. Vi lyssnar även på spännande Dylan-tolkningar av andra kvinnliga artister som Karen Dalton, Abbey Lincoln, Joan Baez, Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, Madeleine Peyroux, Hart Rouge och punkgruppen Malaria från Berlin.   Låtlista: JUST LIKE A WOMAN Bob Dylan Bob Dylan COLUMBIA 000149, 512352 6    MISTER TAMBOURINE MAN Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan Abbey Lincoln/ Julien Lourau/ Marc Cary/ Michael Bowie/ Aaron Walker VERVE 00383, 533 559-2   4TH TIME AROUND Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan Bob Dylan COLUMBIA 000149, 512352 6   RESTLESS FAREWELL Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan Bob Dylan COLUMBIA 00149, COL 519892 2   DESOLATION ROW Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan Bob Dylan COLUMBIA 00149, 512351 6   IF NOT FOR YOU Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan Bob Dylan COLUMBIA 00149, 88697 08230 2   BOOTS OF SPANISH LEATHER Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan Joan Baez VANGUARD 000381, VCD-79306/7   DIEU A NOS COTES Bob Dylan, Bob Dylan.

Vaudeville entertainment for black audiences began in 1909 with an organization called TOBA. Those four letters stood for Theater Owners Bookers Association. Often called by the black entertainers who worked the TOBA circuit: Tough On Black Artists. For many of the artists, trying times to be sure. However, it was an important cog in the machine which brought black entertainment to the rural areas and large cities in the early part of the century. TOBA had more than 100 theaters operating by the end of the 1920s.Blues and Jazz were an important part of black entertainment in those early years and surely both idioms grew because of the fine caliber of the performers of that era and their ability to reach large audiences throughout most of the country.Actual recordings started being made in 1914 by Victor, Columbia and Edison though the Edison company finally bowed out of the business. In 1918, the Paramount Record Company (a subsidiary of the Wisconsin Chair Company of Port Washington) came into being primarily to make recordings for folks to play on their newly purchased record players which were made by the Chair Company. Paramount is famous today for two things....they were first to record Blind Lemon Jefferson and Ma Rainey and....they made terrible quality pressings of cheap shellac. Were it not for Paramount however, many great artists would never have been heard. Business is business. The Vaudeville Years highlights some of the dynamic female vocalists of that time, women who set the mark for all other female blues shouters to follow.John Rhys/BluePower.comHere's the music:1)...."Hand Clappin' "....Red Prysock....Mercury Records2)...."St. Louis Blues"....Bessie Smith....Columbia Records3)...."Bo Weavil Blues"....Ma Rainey....Paramount Records4)...."I'm A Mighty Tight Woman"....Sippie Wallace....Okeh (Columbia) Records5)...."T.B.
