One month into the Israel-Hamas war, Isreali air strikes have killed more than 10,000 people in Gaza. NPR's Lauren Frayer joins us to discuss. And, after steadily climbing for decades, life expectancy in the U.S. has fallen, largely due to chronic illness. Reporter Akilah Johnson contributed to the Washington Post's series "Dying Early: America's Life Expectancy Crisis" and joins us. Then, singer-songwriter Lera Lynn has lent her talents to an unlikely source: a video game. Even though the game "Endless Dungeon" is set on a fantastical space station, players can hear Lynn's new music serenade them at a Western-style saloon. She joins us to talk about it.
The PlayStation Access podcast is back and this time, the gang are discussing the videogame soundtracks that are closest to their hearts. From rousing battle refrains to sorrowful, contemplative pieces - there are so many incredible works of music across every game genre. You're not serious until Taylor Swift fires you! Todd talked about playing the guitars on Kacey Musgraves records, songwriting with Lera Lynn, keeping the magic in the music during tracking sessions, and how to find new chord shapes for your guitar. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Todd Lombardo, an ACM acoustic session guitar player-of-the-year nominee, producer and songwriter living in Nashville TN. Most notably known for his contributions to Kacey Musgraves “Golden Hour”. He is also responsible for Canadian platinum productions as well as numerous number one country hits as a session player. I first met Todd when he brought the artist Mickey Cash over to The Toy Box Studio for me to mix. I was struck by his great production ideas, arrangement decisions, and guitar playing. Years later we reconnected over at Craig Alvins East Nashville studio which he occupies now. It also turned out we were both interested in weird stuff beyond music like Wim Hof and cold exposure Ice Baths for good health and ultimately we became neighbors. More recently I got to hear a new record he recorded with his partner in life and music Lera Lynn that sounds amazing. So I'm psyched to learn more about what Todd is doing in the studio and get some great recording, production, and mixing tricks for you Rockstars. Todays Guest is Todd Lombardo! Todd's career has been a masterful balancing act of execution as a first call studio musician, songwriter and producer. His catalog of recording credits have amassed over 3 billion streams. He's earned 2 nominations for ACM acoustic guitar player of the year, and has collaborated with artists ranging from Niall Horan and James Bay, to Morgan Wallen and Sam Hunt, to Kacey Musgraves and Vince Gill.Todd's path into the upper echelon of the recording industry started with his exploration of creating demos in his home studio and collaborating with a variety of songwriters. Eventually those projects caught the ears of many of Nashville's top producers and Todd found himself on the tracking floor as one of the select few, first call guitar players in the studio scene. While keeping up with a demanding schedule in the studio, Todd continued to carve out time for his Instrumental projects under the name TOLO, as well as songwriting and producing with artists such as Lera Lynn, Jana Mila, and Sarah Buxton. This episode rounds the bases of Todd's home run career, covering topics like building confidence in the chair, creating parts that fit the track, home recording ear, and so much more!Support the showJoin The Band for FREE at studiomusicianacademy.comFor access to exclusive masterclass sessionsInstagramYoutube

Lera Lynn once again entices the listener into her dark, twisted indie rock world with her new composition “A Killer Inside,” The Mantawauk Caves anthem. With echoes of her work from True Detective, “A Killer Inside” seduces the listener to the macabre with its strikingly arranged strings, driving drums, and Lynn's signature electric guitar. Each spin of the song reveals new twists in melody and meaning.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 219: This time I catch up with two dynamic women from Nashville with albums that are journalistic in nature, chronicling change and life passages. Nicki Bluhm is a national jam roots star thanks to hear years leading The Gramblers and numerous collaborations with the likes of Phil Lesh and Little Feat. On her new Avondale Drive album she ruminates on the end of her marriage and building a new self in Nashville. Lera Lynn, a veteran of the show, returns with Something More Than Love, largely about the tradeoffs and blessings of being a new mother. They make a fine pairing of candid conversations.

Americana musician Lera Lynn doesn't shy away from the tough stuff. In this episode of The Mezzanine, she speaks with clarity and directness about growing up with an alcoholic parent, processing grief, and seeking self-acceptance -- both on and off stage. The Nashville-based singer-songwriter stopped by Citizen Studios while on tour with the duo, Penny and Sparrow. During their conversation, she and Cass share laughs, tears, and a memorable surprise. Lynn's preparing to release her second solo album, due out July 15. The record, “Something More Than Love',' glimmers. Her songs are deeply personal and affecting, while she brings up themes we can all find relatable.
Sarah Murdoch's haunting, sultry voice seeps into your bones and transfixes you from the moment she opens her mouth. Described as ‘honey for your insides,' she channels the power and depth of singers from another era, while maintaining a contemporary edge. Ranging from traditional folk music to original songs played on a baritone guitar, she's been compared to Florence Welch, PJ Harvey, and Lera Lynn. Sarah has performed at venues including DROM, Sidewalk, and The Knitting Factory. website: https://www.sarah-murdoch.com/IG: https://www.instagram.com/sarahmurdochmusic/FB: https://www.facebook.com/sarahmurdochmusicSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6I4kDl4s5MdIOXcDCChkQs

We had the pleasure of interviewing Nick Africano over Zoom video! Poignant songwriters carry a brilliance of capturing heart-piercing stories in real-time while reflecting deep-seated emotions and a lust for life that uplifts. Nick Africano's poetic storytelling bears unflinching intimacy and releases our imaginations to dream of love's abundance of emotions. Gossip of Flames is a masterpiece featuring Africano in collaboration with Nashville's rising star Lera Lynn (as seen on HBO's True Detective); who serves as the producer and co-writer (7 of the 10 songs) of Gossip of Flames. Gossip of Flames was recorded by GRAMMY Award-winning engineer Craig Alvin (Kacey Musgraves) at Nashville's Sound Emporium.Gossip of Flames culls an identity from Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself," though rooted in the life of a performing artist based in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn. In a bout of inspiration to record Gossip of Flames, Africano returned to his Sicilian father's art studio in the midwestern town of Normal, IL where he grew up playing baseball with lauded artist Pokey LaFarge. The homecoming resulted in a handful of demos sent off to various Nashville producers and co-writers. While on a writing retreat in Music City, Africano met with Lera Lynn and Todd Lombardo as he neared completion of the 10 songs on Gossip of Flames. That chance composing session led to Lynn becoming the producer of Gossip of Flames. Gossip of Flames spotlights three recording sessions, the first of which includes an array of Nashville musicians. Lera Lynn is in the producer's chair while co-writing and singing on nearly every track. Craig Alvin engineered the album with Africano performing alongside Todd Lombardo(guitars, keys, slide), Robby Handley (bass), Chris Lippincott (piano, keys, pedal steel), and Jason Cheek (drums). Four songs on Gossip of Flames were engineered by Lombardo and performed/recorded with the trio of him, Africano, and Lynn. We want to hear from you! This week, we bring you a deep dive with the silky-voiced southern gothic-folk songwriter Lera Lynn, who has recently gained notoriety for her mysterious and lushly cinematic sound, as heard in her haunting 2020 LP On My Own (on which she writes, produces and plays every instrument on each song) and in the music of HBO's True Detective (produced by T-Bone Burnett), on which she also became a cast member in Season 2. We've all had our dark moments during this last year. For Lynn it was figuring out how to put out a new album, which she had painstakingly make herself in isolation (see Springsteen's moody and homemade Nebraska,) right as her first baby was on the way without any family being allowed to help shoulder the load. At times the burden seemed too much to bear - but what emerged was a touchstone set of songs that unintentionally seemed to pinpoint the exact center of our collective dread - and the flickers of hope of a new beginning that can come out of a such a societal time-quake. Searching reverby rock standouts like "Are You Listening?" seem to be calling out into a void that we never knew we had, perhaps reminding us again how much we need human touch, friendship, family warmth and true soul connection. While we are currently emerging into the light-filled end of this Covid-19 tunnel, it's important to note that this interview was conducted back in 2020 in the thick of the harshest lockdowns (the taping footage was lost, then finally found) and songs like “Isolation” hit the exact pain point for many artists like Lynn who once thrived on bringing live-music's unique sweaty joy to strangers in a new town each night. Lynn's rising calls of “Is anybody out there?” ring like echoes from a very recent bad dream - a dream of course that is still very much a painful reality in many parts of the world. Coming out of the fertile roots rock scene of Athens, GA, Lynn's earlier records like the intimate and country-inflected Have You Met Lera Lynn? from 2011 and its pop-forward follow ups The Avenues (2016) and Resistor (2017) focused mostly on her endlessly warm and rich voice - and the fury and frustration she was processing growing up an only child of an alcoholic dad. But it was her guest-star-laden LP Plays Well With Others (2018) where Lynn began to realize the extent of her gifted arranging and vocal powers together. Teaming up with a murderer's row of Americana artists like Shovels & Rope, John Paul White of the Civil Wars and Rodney Crowell, it may be the most high-spirited of her works - like a basement party jam session going off the rails in all the best ways. The tough year at home did make Lynn come to appreciate how far she's come since those early days - maybe it took a decade of hard-won acceptance and practice to be able to create On My Own without any help from other musicians or producers - and the result is a wonder to hear. Now if she could just play it for an actual live audience. Stick around to the end of the episode to hear her introduce her favorite broken-romance number "So Far."
The piece of music we're listening to in the background is called Fear For The Storm. It's the theme song from The Strange Case of Starship Iris. Today we'll break it down and get into why and how it was made. You're listening to How I Make Music, where audio drama composers get to tell their own stories. In this show, we break apart a song soundtrack or composition from a fiction podcast and take a trip into how it was made. My name is Erin. I'm an audio editor, sound designer (and sometimes vocalist) from San Francisco, and this is How I Make Music. Welcome back to How I Make Music Episode 98 "Fear For The Storm" by Jess Best, S.E. Winters and me, Erin Baumann. Thanks for listening in. 1:38 INTRO So Starship Iris is an outer space mystery shows that then evolves into a really great found family romp. All the while, it's still in outer space. Within the world of the podcast, there is a mysterious band called Birdy and the Swan Song. No one has ever seen the lead singer of this band, but they do have a hit song and the song is called Fear For The Storm. 2:32 BEDROOM DEMO Diegetic music is music that is actually taking place within the world of a story. So stuff you'd hear on the radio, stuff a character like actually sings, things like that. Today, we are going to listen to three versions of Fear For The Storm - a demo version, a full cast singalong, and the third version is fully produced as the theme song. Jessica best - Jess - is the writer of Starship Iris and one of the founding members of the Procyon Podcast Network. She writes songs, so she's the original composer. She was just casting around going "does anyone know a vocalist? I'm just trying to record a demo of the song real quick so we can throw it into an episode." And I was like, "if you just need someone to record a demo, I can bang that out in probably an hour." I recorded that first demo version just sitting in my bedroom, sent it over real quick. They're like "it's great! We're gonna put in an episode" and I was like, "oh, okay, I guess I'll have to listen to my own voice a little longer!" 4:16 SINGALONG Fear For The Storm started out with this demo version, just me on vocals, just on guitar. And it ramped up from there to - delightfully - a full cast singalong. They all recorded it separately, actually. They were never all in one place. The cast is very widely scattered. They all have lovely voices. We love to hear them. Brittony LeFever, who plays Krejjh and Jamie Price, who plays Brian Jeeter, are both actually vocalists in real life. They were instrumental in kind of building it out. They gave everyone else something to really hang on to, including me. 5:55 INFLUENCES I'm not really - you know - a folk style singer. When I was recording Fear For The Storm, I was drawing on a couple of different references. One of my biggest influences was Laura Marling, specifically a track of hers called Night Terror. Give it a listen. At the time, I was listening to Lera Lynn's cover of TV On The Radio's "Wolf Like Me" so that was another big influence in the tone I was going for. Give it a listen. 8:33 FULL VERSION Jess just got in touch with me and was like, "would you still want to record vocals for this full version?" and then I was like, "Sure." I had just moved into a new apartment I found myself recording in a closet surrounded by boxes. Kind of like scrunched in next to my jackets. The instrumentals were provided by Chiron Star. He provided a really great instrumental track and honestly an awesome guitar solo that I think is the best part of the song. 9:43 OUTRO I think that's the awesome thing about podcasting - the barrier to entry is really so low. If you have a good concept and you have good ideas and a decent setup, it'll carry. It'll read That's about it for this week's episode. We'll listen to the full track in just a moment. But before we do that, thank you for listening to How I Make Music. Catch new episodes on Spotify, Apple or wherever else you listen to find podcasts. On Episode 131, I'm joined by singer-songwriter Lera Lynn, who at the end of the week (Friday, Oct 23), is releasing her excellent new full-length, On My Own. As the title alludes, On My Own is just that. It's a singular vision with Lynn doing all of the writing, playing, singing, arranging, engineering, production, and more all on her own. That solo process is very much the guiding light and force for the 10-track album. There's a magic and tone set by Lynn not only experimenting with new instruments and song structures but by also learning the various aspects of recording an album that often is taken for granted by the average listener. Still, Lynn is as steady as ever blending bold statements, intimate whispers, and the innate anxieties that come with the human condition. At every turn, Lynn's sonically adventurous with drum machine rhythms, sprinkles of dark-toned electric guitar, smoky harmony textures, and Lynn's own rich and velvety crystalline vocals. Songs like the opening "Are You Listening," the smoldering "Dark Horse," and the album highlight "Let Me Tell You Something" find Lynn at her best and confidently progressive. During this interview, we talk about the creative process and songs of On My Own, what spurred on the direction of the album, investing hours of learning and perfecting proper recording techniques, taking up painting, and the current climate of the music industry.
