Emergency meeting discussing Palestine, resistance & the struggle for freedom with:Tariq Ali, author · Refaat Alareer, Palestinian writer live from Gaza · Richard Boyd Barrett, socialist MP in Ireland · Sophia Beach, anti-Zionist Jewish socialist · Ilan Pappé, authorIsrael is launching a brutal attack on Gaza, in what many are calling a "second Nakba". Thousands of Palestinians are being killed, forced to flee and are facing Israeli terror. All this is being done with the support of the West, including politicians like Keir Starmer.Palestinians are right to resist. The 75 years that have passed since the first Nakba have been constant occupation, apartheid and brutalisation of Palestinians at the hands of the Israeli state. It is crucial in Britain that we stand in solidarity with the Palestinian resistance. But we have to ask the question - how can Palestine be free? This meeting will be debating how we can build solidarity in Britain, why Palestinians are right to resist and what a revolutionary strategy for Palestinian liberation looks like.

Today, June 16th, is commonly referred to as Bloomsday, named after the fictional character Leopold Bloom, from James Joyce's Ulysses, voted the greatest novel of the 20th century. Electricity demand from data centres here is expected to reach almost 30% by 2031. That is according to EirGrid, the semi-state company that manages Ireland's electricity transmission network. The largest growth comes from the data centre and new large energy users, and an increased uptake of electric vehicles and heat pumps. If there's such a thing as a ‘celebrity' politician then Richard Boyd Barrett would surely make the cut. A very familiar face and voice on TV and radio, Richard is eloquent and outspoken, goes against the grain when it comes to the Dail dress code, and he's mates with one of the world's top supermodels Bella Hadid. Well, he doesn't actually know her, but she does follow him on Instagram and has been sharing a few of his posts recently. More on that, and loads more, in the interview. Check it out. This episode of the podcast focuses on the effects of developments in science and technology on our society - and in particular on the science of propaganda. I speak with Professor Oliver Boyd-Barrett from Bowling Green State University about the influence that social media, cyber warfare and hacking, bot armies, troll farms, and other technologies have on the spread of disinformation and misinformation throughout our society. Who is it that really wields power in the world? Note: At 01:41:50 Oliver introduces a thought experiment in which he describes the western view of the treatment of Uyghur's in China's Xinjian province as being a product of western propagandists. Oliver wishes to make clear that this is a thought experiment and that he is unable to say with certainty that the Xinjiang narrative actually is such a product. Oliver wrote an article on this topic in which his concerns and uncertainties are better articulated, which can be found here: ►Watch this episode on Youtube: https://youtu.be/QkO29wwiEt0 ►https://citizentruth.org/the-uyghur-question-struggling-to-monopolize-the-narrative/ ►Find out more about Oliver's work here: https://www.bgsu.edu/arts-and-sciences/media-and-communication/faculty-and-staff/oliver-boyd-barrett.html ►Oliver's books can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/author/list/102104.Oliver_Boyd_Barrett

With the news that Donald Trump is visting his Doonbeg golf course in County Clare at the end of June, the question on Irish lips was whether he should be welcomed or jeered. On this week's Floating Voter, People Before Profit TD, Richard Boyd Barrett, was unequivocal in his oppostion to Trump coming to these shores and is already mobilising anti-Trump protesters to make their voices heard. Whilst not comparing the Republican Presidential nominee directly to Hitler, Boyd Barrett told the Floating Voter team of Kevin Doyle, Niall O'Connor and Philip Ryan, that Trump's racism, mysogny and Islamophobia has crossed the line beyond civil democratic discourse.
Acts 20:35 says: "I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive." Our quote for today is from Jack Canfield. He said: "You don't have to get it perfect, you just have to get it going. Babies don't walk the first time they try, but eventually they get it right." Today, in the Get Things Done podcast we are looking at Part 4 of Step 6: "Get Tough With Yourself". Q: Do psychologists recommend “flexing” the will regularly? Indeed they do. One who emphasized this concept many years ago was William James, who put it this way: “Keep alive in yourself the faculty of making efforts by means of little useless exercises every day, that is to say, be systematically heroic every day in little unnecessary things; do something every other day, for the sole and simple reason that it is difficult and you would prefer not to do it, so that when the cruel hour of danger strikes, you will not be unnerved or unprepared. A self-discipline of this kind is similar to the insurance that one pays on one’s house and on one’s possessions. To pay the premium is not pleasant and possibly may never serve us, but should it happen that our house were burnt, the payment will save us from ruin.” More recently, other psychologists, such as Roberto Assagioli and Boyd Barrett have urged this approach – the daily performance of seemingly useless acts for the sole purpose of strengthening the will. “Gymnastics of the will,” they have called it. Q: But it seems a shame to select something that is “useless” when there are so many useful tasks to be done! True. And I am inclined to disagree with James, Assagioli, and Barrett on this point. Instead of performing some useless act just for the sake of exercising the will, I think it makes more sense to select a useful task one has been putting off, so as to get some benefit from the exercise beyond the mere training of the will. ...
Some of the most famous and classic examples of sound being used to tell stories come from the world of cinema. On this episode we’re joined by Dr Kenny McAlpine of Abertay University as we take a look at what we can learn from film sound. The main focus of this discussion is to define some specific terms that are common in connecting emotionally with the subconscious of the viewer – and to think about how we use this techniques for a listening, rather than watching audience. We’re going to look at empathetic and anempathetic sound. Does the soundtrack serve to support the tone of the scene, or contrast it?We’ll also look at diegetic and non-diegetic music. Is the music in your story part of the story world, or exclusively for the listener? Why might you choose one over the other, and does it matter? And if you want to delve deeper in to this subject, I recommend a book called Audio-Vision: Sound on Screen by Michael Chion. With thanks to Boyd Barrett of Roswell BC for creating the intro to this week’s show.
This week on What's the Story? Podcast we change gears and welcome our first Politician to our ranks. Richard Boyd Barrett is TD (Member of Irish Parliament) for the constituency of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown located in South Dublin. After over a decade of political campaigning, Richard was elected to Dáil Éireann in the 2011 general election and has become one of the most prominent voices amongst the anti government opposition. He is a member of the People Before Profit party and is also one of the 16 TDs that make up the Dáil Technical Group. We spoke to Richard about growing up in his constituency, playing football for every team in the borough and how he came to get involved with politics and campaigns. Having grown up in a relatively affluent area and attending one of Ireland's most elite private schools, its been a long road to campaigning for social justice; a road that brought Richard to London, Israel and back again. It was in Israel in the late eighties that Richard was exposed to politics in a way that would inspire him to get involved upon his return to Ireland. We heard all about his early days in the Socialist Workers Party and his involvement in campaigns from Save our Seafront and opposing the water charges. Danny admits he didn't vote for Richard in the last election while Mero proudly admits he did, Danny then does his best to question things like social housing, welfare and opposition to Ireland's low corporation tax rate. All of this and we hear about Lindsey's adventures with BJJ and her upcoming MMA debut, Mero has pink eye, Toblerone banter and Danny continues to spread the word of secret messages within company logos.
