The Power of Celebration: Why Acknowledgement Fuels Success

Life Passion and Business

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2025 11:05 Transcription Available

Have you ever stopped to really celebrate your achievements and reflect on what recognition truly means? In this podcast, we're diving into the crucial role of acknowledgement and celebration in our lives. You know, all too often, we hit a goal or reach a milestone but then just move on without soaking in the joy of what we've accomplished. Last weekend, I got to experience a truly inspiring event—a degree show at Abertay University. It was beautiful to watch students, including my own son, share their journey with family, friends, and industry insiders. The evening show was all about creative awards in fields like development, design, art, game art, and coding. It really hit me then, how rare those opportunities are to be publicly celebrated for our achievements. Our modern lives seem to lack those moments of appreciation, yet historically, festivals and celebrations have always brought communities together. Today, in our fast-paced world, we often miss out on true efforts to celebrate and recognize not just big milestones like weddings or birthdays but also little victories. The competitive business world often tries to mimic this with award events. However, these can sometimes feel like 'bought' recognitions rather than genuine celebrations. Yet, whatever the method, there's a shared joy in acknowledging success, one that's missing in many of our endeavours today, where the work seems endless and without tangible endpoints. So, what's the solution? We need to find ways to bring celebrations into our everyday lives, to break the routine and appreciate the journey. This is more than just about public adoration—it's about feeling good internally when we acknowledge ourselves and others. Why not try a little experiment? Pick a task, maybe cleaning out that cluttered drawer or tidying up your wardrobe. Once done, take a step back, appreciate the difference, and relish that sense of achievement. It'll empower you more than you might expect! Every little acknowledgement can be a powerful motivation booster, driving us to pursue even bigger goals. The creative industries know this; that's why they so elegantly celebrate success to propel people forward to achieve even greater heights. So let's tap into this powerful resource by valuing achievements more. Remember, this isn't just about work or big life events. It's about appreciating every stride we make on our life's journey. So, go ahead, try recognizing something you've achieved today, and see how uplifting it feels. If this chat has resonated with you, share it with a friend and spread the positivity. Nature-based solutions are a key tool in solving environmental problems such as flooding. Rachel met with Dr Rebecca Wade from Abertay University, who is a big advocate for these solutions, to find out more about how they are actually implemented, and why they are so important. The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust's demonstration farm in Auchnerran near Logie Coldstone, is home to numerous species of wading birds, but has had significant issues in the past with nest predation from badgers and other animals. They are trialling an innovative new solution - specially designed cages to protect the nests from would-be predators. Mark met with researcher Max Wright to find out how successful this trial has been so far.The village of Kinnesswood near Kinross home to a very lively community of beekeepers. Stuart MacFarlane went along to find out more about how the community gained such an affinity for these pollinators.Capercaillie are one of our nations most beloved and yet endangered species, and during the breeding season rangers carry out regular patrols to try and prevent passers-by from disturbing the birds. Rachel joined a team from the Cairngorms National Park Authority for an early morning patrol. The Great Outdoors Coast to Coast Challenge has been running continuously for the last 45 years It is a non-competitive challenge encouraging walkers to plot and walk a route from West to East, connecting them with some of the amazing landscapes across the country. Mark met with several walkers as they near the end of their walk, to find out what attracted them to this challenge in the first place. The warm and dry weather across the country over the last few weeks has been welcomed by many. However, the impact on our rivers and fish has been very significant. Phil Sime and Morven Livingstone met with Director of Ness District Salmon Fisheries Board, Brian Shaw, to hear just how this dry spell has impacted the river. The Beach of Dreams Festival has been taking place across the UK for several weeks, emphasising the beauty, heritage, and possible futures of our coastlines. One of the most interesting projects has been taking place in Fife, and Rachel met with artist Julie Brook, who has spent several days on the coast there, building an ambitious tidal sculpture.

It's the first birthday of ‘That's Debatable!'. We hope listeners will indulge us as we take a moment at the beginning of today's episode to look back over one or two of the segments from the last twelve months that have particularly resonated. First up on today's main menu, however, is the ‘Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act', which will now be activated on April Fool's Day, nearly three years after it first received Royal Assent. The law creates new stirring up of hatred offences for protected characteristics including age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, and transgender identity. As Dr Stuart Waiton of Abertay University has reported in the Scottish Mail on Sunday, “From Section 4 of the Act itself, we find that saying something a ‘reasonable person' would consider ‘insulting' could be enough to see the long arm of the law reach into your living room”. He goes on to say, “What we are witnessing is a new type of authoritarianism – one that is clothed in the language of care and protection”. We continue with a discussion of Labour's proposed Hate Crime Action Plan announced by Yvette Cooper. Worryingly, the proposal risks bringing back far more frequent recording of Non-Crime Hate Incidents (‘NCHI'), this after all the effort we have expended in getting these expunged from the records of people who have simply expressed a controversial view in the public square. We finish with a brief discussion of the latest report from Hope Not Hate, which focuses on what it calls the new ‘Radical Right'. This phenomenon allegedly “differs from the traditional far right in that it advocates an illiberal democracy rather than overthrow of the system itself”. Rather ludicrously, this leads to a document that lists senior Tories such as Jacob Rees-Mogg, John Redwood and Iain Duncan Smith in Section 3, its ‘Radical Right Feature'. That's Debatable!' is edited by Jason Clift.

Speaker: Jade Kouletakis, Abertay University, DundeeBiography: Jade is currently a lecturer at Albertay University Law School.Abstract: International intellectual property frameworks conceive of copyright exclusivity as a largely individualistic, westernised and capitalistic benefit which must be balanced against and limited by the non-commercial, competing public interest. This is expressed primarily by way of limitations to and exceptions from the norm of exclusivity recognised within these frameworks. This presentation argues for an alternative interpretation of copyright exclusivity as being justified by the public interest. However, unlike the works of Geiger et al., this interpretation is not premised upon the constitutional and quasi-constitutional patterns accounting for the public interest foundations of IP. Instead, it is premised upon the conceptualisations of indigenous communities within the Global South relating to exclusivity over intangible property for the communal benefit. This presentation argues that a paradigm shift in the international community at a supranational level is needed in order to better reflect the norms and values of the Global South. By reassessing the nature of copyright exclusivity rather than delegating conversations about non-commercial communal needs to limitations and exceptions, the Global South is no longer seen as mere passive receptors of Western norms and values, but as active participants with inherent value in the creation of a truly global IP framework. For more information see: https://www.cipil.law.cam.ac.uk/seminars-and-events/cipil-seminars

The presenter, journalist and “Queen of Mean”, Anne Robinson, tells us about becoming the first female host of Channel 4's longest running series Countdown We discuss why the future of the high street needs to put women at the centre of its design and overall regeneration. Mary Portas has done a TED talk and podcast arguing for a new approach by business and customers and has now written a book about it all called “Rebuild”. The future of the High Street looked challenging before the pandemic but as shops have reopened it's become evident how urgent the situation now is. Many brands or their outlets have gone bankrupt or moved online. More than a decade ago Mary Portas outlined this trend with a government review into the problem, but she is now urging people to rethink their whole relationship with shopping and consumerism and move towards a 'kindness economy' as we come out of the lockdown. She has now written a book about this called Rebuild. She joins Krupa Padhy to discuss, alongside Suzannah Clarke who has published research saying women are the key to the regeneration of the High Street economy. Women are responsible for 85% of spending there and she says they need to be taken into account in future planning if the downward trends are to be reversed. Eilidh Doyle is Scotland's most decorated track and field athlete of all time. The Olympic, World and European medal holder had hoped to compete in the Olympics in Tokyo this month but instead announced – at the age of 34 - her retirement from competitive athletics. She talks to Krupa about knowing when to stop, and becoming involved in a new project with Abertay University, where elite athletes and sporting figures such as Judy Murray and Tanni-Grey Thompson share their experiences of unexpected setbacks and coping strategies with people who have been negatively impacted by Covid-19. School summer holidays are looming in England and Wales and in Scotland and Northern Ireland they have already begun. But what provision is there for the children of working parents who need local, affordable and well-run holiday childcare? There are rumours of patchy availability, often with a high cost. So what impact is this having on parents? Ahead of the results of their annual survey on this – Megan Jarvie, Head of Coram Family and Childcare joins Krupa along with Rebekah Jackson, Director of the Out of School Alliance. 14 year old Mackenzy Beard from Swansea has had a painting selected for exhibition at the Royal Academy, as part of their Young Artists' Summer Show. The work will be on display online and in London from 13th July. Mackenzy joins Krupa to talk about her inspiration for the piece. Do plants have a memory? Yes, according to the pioneering research of Professor Dame Caroline Dean, a plant biologist who has spent more than thirty years looking into how plants remember seasons, and what this can tell us. She's just been awarded the prestigious Wolf Prize in Agriculture, which is considered by some to be the equivalent of a Nobel Prize in agriculture. Caroline joins Krupa to talk through her extraordinary work and career. Image: Mary Portas Credit: Josh Shinner

Reimagining the University of Lynchburg and Building Partnerships with Lynchburg with President Alison Morrison-Shetlar President Alison Morrison-Shetlar describes herself as a “servant leader.” She is the first person born outside the U.S. and the first woman to serve as the University of Lynchburg's president. Her term began in August 2020. As the COVID-19 pandemic started to take hold in the U.S., the then-president-elect launched a fledgling effort to sew cloth face masks for the University community. The initiative, which she called “Sewcial Hornets,” eventually involved more than 360 “voluntailors” — students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends of the University — who made over 8,500 masks. President Alison, as she likes to be called, spent her first official day in office serving the greater Lynchburg community at Building Our Community Together, an event that brings together area universities, nonprofits, and other groups. In partnership with her favorite nonprofit, Samaritan's Feet International, and the University's Master of Nonprofit Leadership Studies program, she handed out free shoes and socks to about 400 local children. Raised on the Scottish Isle of Bute, President Alison says she was “just an average kid.” Her father was the county clerk, her mother was a homemaker. At Rothesay Academy, she played basketball and field hockey and competed on the track and field team in the high jump, long jump, and 100-meter dash. At age 18, she left home for Dundee College of Technology — now Abertay University — where she earned a Bachelor of Science, with honors, in biology and chemistry, and a PhD in biomedical sciences. As a first-generation college student, she originally wanted to be-come a laboratory technician and get an associate degree. Dundee's president encouraged her to pursue a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry instead. She graduated second in her class. She went on to do postdoctoral research at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology in London, then became chair of the molecular biology unit at the Max Planck Institute in Dortmund, Germany, and a teach- er-scholar at Bochum University in Bochum, Germany. In 1993, she followed her husband, Robert Shetlar, to the U.S., where he had a postdoctoral position in Connecticut. Over the next 20 years, she held teaching, research, and administrative positions
at colleges and universities in Maine, Connecticut, Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina. Most recently, she served as interim chancellor at Western Carolina University. On their first day in the office at Lynchburg, President Alison and her husband, the “first gentleman,” announced a new endowed scholarship to support student success. They also adopted a “first dog,” black Lab puppy Molly, who will accompany them as they hike the campus trails and in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Meanwhile, President Alison is working with the campus community and city partners on three University pillars: leadership development; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and innovation and collaboration.

Despite a long and courageous history of female spies, the UK's secret intelligence agencies - MI5, MI6 and GCHQ - are still overwhelmingly dominated by men. The head of GCHQ, Jeremy Fleming, has committed his agency to up its efforts to 'attract talented women' as part of a wider focus on increasing diversity and inclusion. But will more women in the intelligence services make us safer? Not necessarily, says Sally Walker, who was until recently one of the most senior women at GCHQ and the creator of the UK's National Cyber Force. She talks to Emma about her take on diversifying the world of spies, and what's really needed to keep us safe from the constant, often invisible threats to the UK's national security. This week we're allowed to do more and more, as lockdown eases further. Hug with caution, have a meal inside a restaurant, a drink inside a pub and go to the theatre. One theatre that pulled up the curtain last night is the Bush Theatre in London with a play called Harm. It's a monologue, and the actress who carries it is Kelly Gough. She joins Emma to explain how it felt after such a long imposed break from treading the boards. A 29 year old Scottish law student says she’s being investigated by her University because of comments she’s made about men and women. In her University lectures - done online - she's said women are weaker than men, and women are women because they have reproductive organs. Lisa Keogh is in her final few days at Abertay University in Dundee where she's been studying law for four years. She speaks to Emma. The number of children in care in England is at its highest since 1985 and it's rising. A mother's addiction to drugs and alcohol is often one of the issues and domestic violence is a factor in many cases. The reporter and DJ Milly Chowles became a mum at 40 last year, she’s in recovery from addiction and feels she was given lots of chances to change. Her fear is that women now aren’t getting those opportunities and the impact on them, their children and society is devastating. Today, the story of a woman who has come full circle - there are references to suicide. Back in March 2020, during the first lockdown, abortion regulations were relaxed in England, Scotland and Wales to allow telemedical early medical abortion care, before ten weeks’ gestation. This has meant that women have been able to continue to access abortion care during the pandemic by having medication posted to them following a telephone consultation with a qualified nurse or midwife. And more than 100,000 women have done so. Before this women had to go to a clinic for a face-to-face consultation before an early abortion. Charities and medical bodies working across sexual and reproductive health have now signed an open letter to Health Secretary Matt Hancock, calling for these temporary measures to be made permanent in England. Lesley Regan, Past President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and signatory to the letter, joins Emma to discuss.

Tim Sadler speaks to Dr Karen Renaud, Professor at Abertay University and Dr Marc Dupuis, Assistant Professor at the University of Washington Bothell to find out. Specializing in the human factors of cybersecurity, these academics have researched the effectiveness of fear appeals in cybersecurity and they fully believe that the industry needs to flip the script when it comes to training people to do the right thing. Our goal is to highlight the work of graduate students, early career researchers and scholars from under-represented groups, backgrounds and regions. The primary inspiration comes from sociologist and critic Raymond Williams. In the Preface to his book Keywords: a vocabulary of culture and society, Williams envisaged not a static dictionary but an interactive document, encouraging readers to populate blank pages with their own keywords, notes and amendments. “Keywords in Play” follows Williams in affirming that “The significance is in the selection”, and works towards diversifying the critical terms with which we describe games and game culture.

Abertay University's Toma Pustelnikovaite on the nuances underlying the influx of migrant academics into the UK. Featuring research with Dr Shiona Chillas (University of St Andrews). The number of foreign academics in the UK has been increasing over the last forty years, and currently comprises a third of UK’s academic profession (Lenihan and Witherspoon 2018). Existing research on migrant scholars, however, tends to focus on international careers and analyse mobility as a resource for career development and progression. Distinctively, our paper seeks to understand how the academic profession has responded to the influx of migrant scholars. We draw on the concept of social closure in the sociology of professions, and on empirical data from 62 semi-structured interviews with foreign-born academics working in 13 British universities. Findings show that academia has developed three social closure strategies – integration, exclusion and subordination – to control the absorption of migrant academics. The profession enacts these strategies to subtly regulate access, work and intra-professional relationships, selectively incorporating foreign-born academics and maintaining the status quo. The paper demonstrates nuances underlying the influx of migrant academics into the UK, suggesting that patterns of inclusion shape migrant scholars’ working lives.

As freelancers we often feel like we’re all on our own, that we have to come up with everything ourselves. But there are communities of us, both online and offline, that we can lean on and use to learn from each other. Whether you’re just starting out or have been running your own freelance business for years, the power of community and networking can be a major benefit. Few know this better than today’s guest. Donna McAvoy is an amazing freelance animator and a member of our recent Mograph Mastermind Program. She studied computer arts at Abertay University and worked on mobile games before moving into animation for television. Now she’s freelancing as a 2D animator based in Glasgow where she creates some truly awesome work. In this bonus episode, Donna shares the story of her journey into freelance motion design. She has found a way to make a career in her home in Scotland where it may not seem like there are as many opportunities as elsewhere. Donna talks about the realities of looking for and finding jobs as a freelance animator and how she makes it work. Donna credits much of her success to proper networking. It’s helped her discover how others in her situation are making a living and has connected her to some of her best jobs. By connecting with other freelancers, Donna has been able to learn valuable tips from others like her, including that she could significantly raise the rates she was charging her clients.   In this episode: Finding work as a freelancer while living in a place without many big studios The power of motion design communities for helping you find direction as a freelancer The importance of networking for finding jobs when it may seem like none are available Why you should think about significantly raising your rates and the challenges and payoffs of doing so Why freelancers should be charging more than employees of a company How a mastermind can help build confidence, keep you accountable, and come up with great ideas for your business   Quotes: “Networking is just the biggest thing to be doing. And it’s also good to just get out from your desk. I guess a lot of people are working from home and you get a bit crazy there.” [10:43] “Although what you can charge varies from media to media, I think if you’re working remotely, it shouldn’t have such a big impact where you are based.” [12:23] “The networking part is probably most important I feel. Basically just getting your work out as soon as you can because maybe if you do feel like it’s not good enough, it’s good to get someone to give you perspective and feedback on what you could be doing to make it better.” [24:35]   Links: Find Donna McAvoy online Follow Donna on Instagram | Twitter | Vimeo | Linkedin Sign up for the Mograph Mastermind School of Motion   Find the full show notes here Keep up with everything Motion Hatch   Follow Motion Hatch on Twitter | Instagram If you haven't already, would you mind leaving us a rating and review? Clare has been curator of Abertay University’s Hannah Maclure Centre for the past 6 years as well as lecturing and working on many other projects including Neon Digital Arts Festival. Originally she graduated in fine art pursuing a career in painting but found herself being drawn towards the curation of others. She confesses that this is probably partly down to her desire to be around great people and not tucked away in a solitary studio. I can definitely relate to that, I don’t think I’d be able to run Slurpp from a bedroom in my house. I enjoy being around people to bounce ideas off or just talk nonsense around the lunch table with. For me I think that comes from having previously worked at an agency but it’s something that co-working spaces are great for. During our chat Clare says she constantly feels like an imposter as if someone is going to tap her on the shoulder and tell her the game is up. This is definitely a common thread from people who have been on the podcast and I think it boils down to pushing yourself out with your comfort zone when you take on a role. Whether it’s trying a new project, applying for a new job or learning a new skill we all have to push ourselves outside our comfort zone in order to progress. I think the fear of being caught out is natural if you’re working in a new area but you’ve got to understand where the line lies between pushing yourself and totally blagging it. Personally, my favourite bit of our chat was around inspiration and research and how it relates to culture. Clare talks about how she constantly feels the need to get out to events, openings, screenings, gigs and other stuff to digest some culture in before she ‘dries up’. I love this analogy of how we are all cultural sponges, going out and soaking it in. Then we use it up in our practice and it’s only so long before you need to go out again to top up. It’s so important to have that drive to get out to events and see what’s happening, to keep yourself involved in the creative community and really feel involved. There’s only so much you can do through social media, it’s far better to go and experience things first hand. To be honest, there’s no excuse not to in Dundee at the moment as there’s just so much going on. This applies to everyone from students, to graduates to professionals - we all just need to get out more! A forensic look at food and its crime-solving powers. We start with one of the most challenging cases London’s murder squad has ever faced. The BBC’s Emily Thomas meets the Metropolitan Police’s former head of homicide investigations, Andy Baker, by the banks of the Thames, to hear how a murder victim’s stomach contents can help detectives. We meet some hungry criminals – a bank robber with a burger and a thief with his hand in the biscuit tin. Former crime scene investigator Dennis Gentles, from Abertay University in Dundee, Scotland, explains new research to identify fingerprints on food, and David Foran, director of Michigan State University’s forensic science programme, tells us how a half-finished meal left at a crime scene can be a rich source of DNA. But why would a criminal stop for a snack? We speak to criminologist Richard Wright from Georgia State University. Plus, we find out how food industry technology is being used by detectives. Sheriff Todd Bonner from Wasatch County in Utah tells us how a case that haunted him for 18 years was eventually solved by a vacuum designed for use on food. Finally, the Food Chain’s own Simon Tulett, explores the mystery of the disappearing sausage stew. Please note - a couple of the cases we describe are of a graphic nature and might be upsetting for some, particularly younger listeners. (Photo: Apple and outstretched hand. Credit: Getty Creative).

On this episode we’re joined by Dr Kenny McAlpine of Abertay University as we take a look at what we can learn from film sound. The main focus of this discussion is to define some specific terms that are common in connecting emotionally with the subconscious of the viewer – and to think about how we use this techniques for a listening, rather than watching audience. We’re going to look at empathetic and anempathetic sound. Does the soundtrack serve to support the tone of the scene, or contrast it?We’ll also look at diegetic and non-diegetic music. Is the music in your story part of the story world, or exclusively for the listener? Why might you choose one over the other, and does it matter? And if you want to delve deeper in to this subject, I recommend a book called Audio-Vision: Sound on Screen by Michael Chion. With thanks to Boyd Barrett of Roswell BC for creating the intro to this week’s show.
