Send us a textJoin Professor Jeffrey Sachs and Prof. Ilan Pappè, historian at Exeter University, UK, for an in-depth conversation on one of the most enduring and contentious issues of our time: the Israel-Palestine conflict. Drawing on Pappè's powerful new books—Lobbying for Zionism on Both Sides of the Atlantic and A Very Short History of the Israel-Palestine Conflict, Sachs and Pappè discuss the historical, political, and ideological forces that have shaped the Zionist movement and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Together, they explore how lobbying networks in the UK and US have influenced the foreign policy of both countries, and the role of the UK and US in the Israel-Palestine conflict. They delve into the historical roots of Zionism, the legacy of British colonial rule in Mandatory Palestine, and the role of the US in the Israel-Palestine conflict from the adoption of the UN Partition Plan in 1947 until today. This episode offers listeners a deeper understanding of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine by delving into the historical processes that shaped the conflict during the past century and more.
➡️ This was recorded in 2023.Ilan Pappé is an Israeli historian and professor, who served in the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) during the 1970s, and studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, later completing his doctorate at Oxford University. He's known for his work on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and known as a prominent ‘New Historian' (or revisionist), since he re-examines Israel's history using declassified archives. His book, Ten Myths About Israel (2017), debunks common beliefs about Israel's history and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and is the foundation of our podcast episode. He argues truth matters and understanding it can help the region's people. That said, I doubt anything will help. It's a forever war, and my prognosis is grim, as external forces like the US government drive globalist objectives.

Ilan Pappé, Israeli historian and professor of history at the University of Exeter, discusses the tragic situation of Palestinians who, for many decades, have been the circumstantial victims of a larger global coalition because their existence was “in the way” of other geo-political machinations. Giving a brief history of Zionism in Palestine, Pappé outlines the early alliances made between various groups, all composed of different members with entirely different motives—often contradictory reasons, to include the cooperation between secular nationalist and religious anti-Semites—who came together with one common goal: to see Palestine as a Jewish state and to expunge Palestinians from their land. Mapping out the various forces that wished to symbolically and/or physically disappear Palestinians, Pappé notes how Christian Zionists and British imperialists weaponised Zionism and Islamophobia to change the demographics of the region while later secular Jews understood the power of utilising anti-Semitism to seek similar ends. Pappé also forays into the paradox of language which has been used to cover up certain actions on behalf of the Israeli state while also providing a “comfort zone” for extending these same abuses of power into the future. Exposing how language has historically been employed to cover up war crimes, Pappé elucidates the current paradigm whereby it is no longer necessary for Israel to cover up its crimes against humanity analysing the shift in political discourse and the tragic reality that the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians has now been firmly placed on the table. Can Zionism survive the current war in Gaza?Israeli historian Ilan Pappé believes it can't. In fact, he argues that the liberation of Palestine is an inevitability.Pappé is the author of 24 books on the Israel-Palestine conflict, and most recently published two books: ‘Lobbying for Zionism on Both Sides of the Atlantic' and ‘A Very Short History of the Israel-Palestine Conflict'.This week on The Big Picture Podcast, we sit down with Ilan Pappé to talk about where the Zionist project originates, why it embraced settler colonialism and why he believes it will ultimately fail to achieve its goals. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode, and any guests you'd like us to have on our show. It's Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Ilan Pappe, professor of history at the University of Exeter and Director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies, author of Lobbying for Zionism on Both Sides of the Atlantic, to discuss the state of affairs in the Middle East a year after October 7th, 2023. Then she speaks with Rakan Abed El Rahman, correspondent at the National News stationed in the Gaza Strip, to discuss what it has been like reporting on the Israel/Gaza conflict since October 7th of last year. First, Emma runs through updates on today's voter registration deadlines, Israel's decimation of Gaza, the IDF's failing invasion of Southern Lebanon, Blinken's role in approving the IDF's bombing of aid trucks in Gaza, France's military aid to Israel, the Harris campaign, SCOTUS, Biden's immigration policy, and the impending Hurricane Milton, before parsing through Elon Musk's simultaneously cringeworthy and genuinely concerning appearance at Trump's rally in PA. Professor Ilan Pappé then joins, diving right into the rapid escalation and exacerbation of Israeli society and the Israeli state's genocidal desires, first tackling the clear signs of the citizenry's right-wing turn and the Netanyahu Administration's messianic nature in the wake of the 2022 elections, before unpacking his thoughts on how the rapid radicalization during Israel's brutal ethnic cleansing of Gaza (now expanded into a regional conflict) has exposed extensive cracks in the state of Israel. After briefly touching on the role of Israeli's backlash to Netanyahu's fascistic judiciary reforms – and the particular dearth of any connection between the violence imposed on Palestinians and the fascism coming home to roost – in demonstrating the precarious state of the country, Professor Pappé steps back to explore this evolution as a natural progression of right-wing colonial ideology in direct conflict with the world it's invading, bolstered by Israel's proactive violence in stamping out any conditions for change. Ilan then walks Sam and Emma through the evolution of the super-alliance that backs the Zionist state, exploring the movement's roots in an Evangelical Christian movement that sought to capitalize on anti-Semitic sentiment and the growing aims of the British Empire, putting together an overwhelmingly powerful coalition before the Jewish community even came to the fore, also looking at the incredible evolution of the Zionist lobby in the United States and how Israel's ability to stamp out conditions for change extends well beyond its border. After expanding on the ever-growing international backlash to Israel's genocidal apartheid regime, Pappé dives deep into the need to recenter Palestinian actors in this fight, and what must be done to achieve decolonization in the region as quickly and with as little violence as possible. Rakan Abed El Rahman then looks to the ongoing devastation Israel is inflicting on the Gaza Strip, unpacking the ever-rising death toll, the debilitating material and mental conditions, and the complete decimation of civilian sectors in the region, before stepping back to outline how very real (while certainly less extreme) all of those issues were *prior* to October 7th of last year. Expanding on this, El Rahman walks Emma through the near-total nature of Israel's reign of terror in Gaza since Hamas' attack last October, even in contrast with Israel's other major offensives against Gaza over the last two decades, before wrapping up by sharing his (and others') experiences of Israel's explicit and targeted terrorizing of journalists and medical personnel, and the insane need for the West (and Israel) to recognize Palestinians as humans rather than terrorists. And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Team reflect on the Veepstakes after last week's debate, parse through Donald Trump's recent comments on the real estate value of colonizing Gaza, and watch Google's former CEO attempt to argue that providing infinite growth for AI is more important than tackling climate change. Buon ascolto.Andrea Colamedici
On this week's episode, I'm speaking to Israeli, anti-zionist historian and academic, Professor Ilan Pappé . Professor Pappé has dedicated dedcades of his life to writing and speaking about the Nakba of 1948, shedding light on what actually happened and what a grave catastrophe it was and continues to be. He calls for a one-state solution and for the right of return of all Palestinians. His books have sought to tackle the myths around Israel and Zionism, providing much needed insight, information, thoughtfulness and nuance reflections. He is one of the major historians of our times writing on Palestine. As the current aggression and genocide in gaza continues well into its tenth month, Ilan encourages us to understand the root of the violence – the illegal occupation of Palestine. Ilan Pappé is an Israeli historian and socialist activist. He is a professor with the College of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of Exeter, director of the university's European Centre for Palestine Studies, and co-director of the Exeter Centre for Ethno-Political Studies. His latest book is Ten Myths About Israel. His books also include The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine and The Idea of Israel: A History of Power and Knowledge. Pappé's research focuses on the modern Middle East and in particular the history of Israel and Palestine. Support the Show.

As a Jew raised and Jewish blooded human - who loves Israel and comes from Zionist grand parents - talking about Israel / Gaza / is hard. It just is - and as someone who prides themselves on speaking my truth - regardless of consequences - I am embarrassed to say that I have been avoiding this topic at least publicly - on the internet - because DUH this is scary to talk about. I made like 7 podcasts after October 7th - AND I WAS TOO CHICKEN SHIT TO POST them - because I was scared / I just felt like I needed more education before saying ANYTHING that would publicly anger people more than I already do. I know. It's gross and I geuinely am embarrassed about it. HOWEVER.... let's DO THIS.... I proudly stand by Bassem - and anyone fighting for human decency - and peace. Since I could think independently - I have spiritually and mentally rejected the propaganda that was shoved down my throat in Hebrew School - and I reject it now. Being a Jew does not equal being a Zionists. I do not want to be a hurt person who hurts people. Ive been praying for the first time - in a long time - not sure exactly to what or who...for and end to this barbaric and disgusting blood drenched quest to occupy more land. It is devestating that somehow after all the "lessons" that were suppose to come from being persecuted - being Jewish is quickly becoming synonymous with being persecutors. The film gives background to the current crisis in Israel/Palestine and brings to light the lives of people we met on our 2022 journey in the occupied West Bank. Their universally human stories speak of intergenerational pain, trauma and resilience. We hope they touch your heart, stir compassion and understanding, and give rise to a pursuit for justice. For without justice, peace remains an empty slogan. Cinema can be a powerful force for change. Our aim is, beyond mere education, to truly move hearts and minds and inspire audiences to echo the calls for freedom, equality and dignity that have gone unanswered for far too long. The film is our modest contribution towards our dream for an end to the occupation in Palestine, the attainment of equal rights and fair treatment for Palestinian people, and the spreading of healing for all intergenerational cycles of trauma in the region. https://whereolivetreesweep.com/

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Daniel J. Galvin, professor of political science at Northwestern University, to discuss his recent book Alt-Labor and the New Politics of Workers' Rights. Then, she's joined by Richard Beck, senior writer at n+1 Magazine, to discuss his recent piece in the New Left Review entitled "Bidenism Abroad." First, Emma runs through updates on Nikki Haley's endorsement of Donald Trump, Israel's continued victimization in the face of committing genocide, US support for Israel, Senate politics, Justice Alito, Anti-trust action, UK elections, and more, before parsing through Fox News' coverage of the FBI's capacity to USE DEADLY FORCE AGAINST DONALD TRUMP, per typical procedure. Professor Daniel Galvin then joins, first contextualizing what these “alternative labor” organizations are, with networks like worker centers, community organizations, and regional alliances providing particularly vulnerable workers in the vast, unionized sectors of the US economy an avenue for workplace and labor justice, be it wage theft, discrimination, sexual harassment, or labor conditions, though generally focusing on rectifying wrongs that have already occurred. Expanding on this, Professor Galvin explores how these organizations have begun shifting to a more proactive approach, advocating for state and local employment and labor policy to chip away at the severe power imbalance in the US economy, finding success in bluer districts and states, while meeting much more institutional (and financial) opposition elsewhere. After walking through the slow and steady undermining of FDR's New Deal system of labor protections after the Second World War, and the shift away from collective bargaining to minimal employment protections, Galvin wraps up by assessing the devastating impact employer exploitation like wage theft actually has on the US economy, resulting in billions taken from the lowest-wage workers. Richard Beck and Emma then reflect on Biden's Foreign Policy platform on the campaign trail, centering a “foreign policy for the middle class” and a narrative of “Democracies versus Autocracies,” which particularly worked with his early policies of support for Ukraine and withdrawal from Afghanistan, respectively, and look to the main individuals – Anthony Blinken and Jake Sullivan – responsible for shaping this platform. After expanding on the evolution of Biden's foreign policy during his first few years in office, Richard and Emma begin to explore how October 7th (and Israel's following ethnic cleansing of Gaza) completely upended these commitments, laying bare the failures of the autocracy-democracy binary, and reinserting the US into an expensive quagmire in the Middle East, all while relying on the policies bequeathed unto him by Donald Trump's far-right administration. Next, Beck looks to the parallels in Biden's approach to China, continuing the economic warfare established under Trump with major EV tariffs and an ongoing attempt at a TikTok Ban, before exploring the increasingly precarious status of US hegemony over the last few decades, and wrapping up by assessing the future of Biden's inactive and defensive leadership as the 2024 election draws near. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they highlight a new EmMajority Report intro song, Sam's evolution into a cruiser (as in… the ships), and talk with Sky from Florida about the ideologies behind hating student debt-forgiveness. The International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor announced Monday that he is seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader in Gaza Yahya Sinwar on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. In response, ‘Two Outspoken' hosted a special breaking news town hall for Zeteo paid subscribers where Owen and Mehdi were joined by two guests: former PLO legal adviser Diana Buttu and Israeli academic Ilan Pappé.Paid subscribers were able to ask their questions directly to Owen, Mehdi, Buttu and Pappé.They discussed how the ICC's prosecution team is also seeking warrants for Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as two other Hamas leaders — Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al-Masri, and Ismail Haniyeh. They also covered what a shock it is for the Israeli political class to find itself held to account by international legal institutions; and whether this move will change anything on the ground for Palestinians.‘Two Outspoken' is a twice-monthly conversation between broadcaster, author, and Zeteo CEO Mehdi Hasan and political commentator, author, and activist Owen Jones. Mehdi and Owen will be discussing the news of the week, offering their analysis on the state of American and British politics, and even, like today, taking questions from Zeteo paid subscribers.Zeteo's live town halls and Q&A sessions are a bonus feature for paid subscribers. If you would like to join the next one live, please consider upgrading to a paid subscription. Get full access to Zeteo at zeteo.com/subscribe

Ilan Pappé on the genocide in Gaza and the end of Zionism (13:32); Dr. Ben Thomson on treating patients in Gaza (01:16:51); Jon Elmer on the US Army's operation to build a pier in Gaza City and videos from the Palestinian resistance (01:49:39); A discussion on latest events (02:35:00); and a news report (01:07).
The death toll from Israel's assault on Gaza continues to climb. Nearly 30,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli airstrikes since October, two-thirds of them women and children, and almost 70,000 people have been injured. Yet this unspeakable crime has been rationalized by much of the U.S. media. Israeli scholar Ilan Pappé says that such justifications rest partly on a distorted view of the history of Palestine/Israel, including of the multiethnic society that existed in Palestine before the establishment of the state of Israel. This violence regularly reaches university campuses and touches every dimension of life. The syllabus is idiosyncratic in the sense that it represents my intellectual and pedagogical interests for this seminar. I encourage people to use it as an educational resource and to take parts for their own teaching." Building on our last episode, here we aim to delve deeper into the early contemporary history of Palestine between the late 19th century up until the Nakba in 1948. With Dr Pappé, a veteran Israeli scholar, we discuss life under colonialism, how lobbying shaped Western support of Israel up until today, as well as the escalation into the Nakba from British colonial rule. https://www.rt.com/shows/going-underground/586609-gaza-slaughter-zionist-israel/ On this episode of Going Underground, we speak to Professor Ilan Pappé, renowned Israeli historian and director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter. He discusses why the Israeli public has been incapable of showing compassion for the people killed in Gaza by Israeli bombardment and for Palestinians living under occupation since 1948, why we may be witnessing the beginning of the end of the Zionist Israel project, and the two ways the occupation of Palestine can go from here, how the leaders of the UK, US, and EU are sending a message of ‘we absolve you' to Israel as it bombs civilians, why Russia and China still stick to a two-state solution, and much more. #2023 #art #music #movies #poetry #poem #photooftheday #volcano #news #money #food #weather #climate #monkeys #horse #puppy #fyp #love #instagood #onelove #eyes #getyoked #horsie #gotmilk #book #shecomin #getready
Nora Lester Murad is an activist, writer and educator who has been involved in the Palestinian cause for over 40 years. She has dedicated her life to advocating for peace with justice and has worked with various organizations to promote narrative change and empower local decision making. Key Takeaways: Times of crisis present both opportunities and challenges for making an impact and creating narrative change. Giving during a crisis should be done with an understanding of the systems and constraints that affect how the resources are used. Liberatory giving involves supporting organizations working towards liberation and self-determination, rather than just providing immediate aid. Consistent and ongoing support is more impactful than one-time contributions. Individuals can contribute to the cause by using their voice, networks, and resources to spread awareness and advocate for change. Emergency meeting discussing Palestine, resistance & the struggle for freedom with:Tariq Ali, author · Refaat Alareer, Palestinian writer live from Gaza · Richard Boyd Barrett, socialist MP in Ireland · Sophia Beach, anti-Zionist Jewish socialist · Ilan Pappé, authorIsrael is launching a brutal attack on Gaza, in what many are calling a "second Nakba". Thousands of Palestinians are being killed, forced to flee and are facing Israeli terror. All this is being done with the support of the West, including politicians like Keir Starmer.Palestinians are right to resist. The 75 years that have passed since the first Nakba have been constant occupation, apartheid and brutalisation of Palestinians at the hands of the Israeli state. It is crucial in Britain that we stand in solidarity with the Palestinian resistance. But we have to ask the question - how can Palestine be free? This meeting will be debating how we can build solidarity in Britain, why Palestinians are right to resist and what a revolutionary strategy for Palestinian liberation looks like.

Even by Israel's abysmal standards, provocations against the people of Palestine have seen a dramatic escalation since the arrival of Bibi Netanyahu's new government three months ago: hundreds of innocent civilians murdered, including many children, an outright anti-Palestinian pogrom in the West Bank that was cheered on by the minister of interior, a brutal attack on worshippers inside one of Islam's holy sites in the middle of Ramadan, as well as statements by a key government official declaring that the Palestinian people simply does not exist. At the same time, a historic wave of protests contesting the new government's attempts to temper with the role of the judiciary claims to defend democracy in the holy land without a single mention of the central question of Palestinian civil and human rights. We asked asked prominent Israeli historian Ilan Pappé for his take on these recent developments.
