Delighted and honoured to be joined by multi-instrumentalist, Brendan Perry on the podcast this week. Brendan, who is one half of seminal 4AD band, Dead Can Dance, talks to me about his first band The Scavengers and the early punk rock scene in Aukland, New Zealand. His love of Bowie and early musical influences and the recording of Dead Can Dance's self-titled debut album, released back in 1984. So many great stories in this one! Listen wherever you get your podcasts. Link in bio Dead Can Dance are one of my all-time favourite groups, so it was a real honour to speak to Brendan about the truly wonderful music he has made with Lisa Gerrard and as solo artist The overall sound of Dead Can Dance is tricky to define, there are elements of European folk ambient, baroque rock, classical and darkwave in their wonderful, genre-bending music. So many Dead Can Dance albums to discover, with three great solo albums from Brendan to check out too https://www.deadcandance.com/ Dead Can Dance - 'Opium" Dead Can Dance - 'The Host Of Seraphim' (Remastered) Brendan Perry - 'Song To The Siren' (live on KEXP)
Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we'd like to wish you a Happy New Year 2024 with this encore episode for first episode of our third season. Our guest today is talking to musician Rachel Haden about her father, influential jazz bassist Charlie Haden. Rachel was kind enough to talk to us about so many things including her memories of growing up as a triplets and going for walks with jazz trumpeter Don Cherry when the Haden's lived in New York. This led us down the path of many other genres of music including country, punk, jazz, indie rock and much.more as the Haden's all sang and played instruments growing up. Thanks dad. We learn about the Rachel's time on the road with Todd Rundgren, her band That Dog, Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance as well as Beck, Jimmy Eat World, Neil Hamburger and more. While we were at it we also discuss jaco Pastorius, Ornette Coleman, Ry Cooder, Jack White, Mike Watt and others. It's a very fertile musical well we draw from when talking to a Haden family member like Rachel as there are so many avenues and styles of music she and her family are connected to. The story spans 1930s Iowa where Charlie was part of The Haden Family Band, who rivaled the Carter Family in popularity in the Midwest and runs all the way to the 2020's with the release of Rachel's solo albums including making music with Charlie's son-in-law, comedian Jack Black of Tenacious D. If you are a fan of music, this episode is the one for you. Take a listen, on the Rarified Heir Podcast encore edition with Rachel Haden, coming up here.
Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to musician Rachel Haden. A go-to musician and singer in her own right, we learned from our interview, Rachel is part of a musical tradition that frankly, we had no idea the depths of until we started talking about it with her for this episode. Her father, bassist Charlie Haden was one of one of the greatest bassists of all-time. Spoken about in hushed tones next to greats like Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius and Ron Carter, Charlie is perhaps best known for his time in Ornette Coleman's ‘free jazz' Quartet in 1960 that literally helped revolutionize jazz. The free jazz movement pushed the boundaries of what jazz was and what it would become. Now if that were all Charlie Haden ever did, he'd still be a legendary figure if his career ended there. However ever the next 50 years, Charlie Haden worked with everyone from Keith Jarrett, and Ginger Baker, to Elvis Costello, and Hank Mobley and even son-in-Jack Black. Born into a musical family in the 1930s, Charlie Haden grew up with country and American folk music as part of his roots. The Haden Family, much like The Carter Family, were songwriters and performers and even had their own radio show in Iowa in the 1940s. Their musical traditions were passed down in handmade books, much like a family bible, that still exist today. Which is why talking to Rachel is so much fun. Along with her sisters Petra and Tanya, The Haden Triplets have recorded two full-length albums as the Haden Triplets, based on the music of their grandparents while covering classic American country and folk music. Their debut was produced by Ry Cooder on Jack White's Third Man Records and their 2020 sophomore follow-up called The Family Songbook, was a bucket list project that brings their family musical legacy full circle. A bass player/singer/keyboardist herself, Rachel Haden co-founded the band That Dog in the 1990s with her sister Petra and performed & recorded with a veritable who's who in music including Weezer, Todd Rundgren, Beck, Brendan Perry, Jimmy Eat World, Neil Hamburger, The Rentals, The Martini's and more. Her older brother, Josh Haden is also a musician, having founded the late 80s SST punk rock band Treacherous Jaywalkers and later, the band Spain. So what was it like growing up with the preeminent jazz bassist for a dad, an older brother bass player following in his dads footsteps and sisters Petra on the violin & Tanya on the cello? We'll find out, on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast.
On the third episode of the Post-Punk Podcast music industry veteran and contributing editor Thomas Thyssen joins Editor in Chief Alex Baker for an interview with Clan of Xymox founder and frontman Ronny Moorings. During the interview, we look back on 40 years of the band, beginning with their rare Demo EP Subsequent Pleasures, and discuss how with the help of Dead Can Dance's Brendan Perry, Clan of Xymox were signed to 4AD. Throughout the interview, we delve further into Clan of Xymox's 4AD years. During this time, they would release their classic 1985 self-titled debut album, which features the fantastic single A Day, and Stranger, both remixed by John Fryer into dancefloor hits as the and its follow-up Medusa. In light of Clan of Xymox's recent release Peel Sessions on vinyl, we also discuss the two recording sessions for John Peel's radio show, which, as legends goes, is how the Genre 'Darkwave" was coined. For the first time in decades, these Peel recordings are finally available on vinyl and digital formats through Dark Entries. George Horn remastered all songs at Fantasy Studios. Eloise Leigh designed the sleeve, taking inspiration from Vaughn Oliver's iconic designs for 4AD. A 2-sided insert with archival photos and notes from Ronny and Anka recounting their experiences recording at the BBC studio. This is the only place you can hear all about it. Ladies and gentleman, my dear friend Krissy Vaine. Stay Calm, and Wilde On! ✌

The new album from Dead Can Dance, replete with high concept and worldly instrumentation, is the subject of this week's We Have A Technical. How does it fit (or not) with the storied dynamic betwixt Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard? Are its Nietzschean ambitions vindicated? And since when has Dionysus been a psychologist? All these questions, plus discussion of recent shows by Odonis Odonis and Clan Of Xymox on the latest episode of the IDieYouDie.com podcast!

Shock World Service 037 The Ideal Correspondence by Jon Averill 17/09/10 London, United Kingdom. 1. Harry Partch - I'm Going To Start You Off By Giving You Some Sounds Harry Partch is an American composer & the first of three of this show's featured musicians who designed & created many of their own instruments. He was was fascinated buy microtonality, creating his own 43-tone scale system. 2. Piano Magic - Exit Just realised our first track proper is called 'Exit', that's not important. Piano Magic have featured previously on the World Service yet they're somehow still criminally ignored. Their most recent album 'Ovations' is most definitely worth a listen. It features contributions by Brendan Perry & Peter Ulrich of Dead Can Dance. Also for some reason this track reminds of the XX, which in turn reminds me of Chris Issak's 'Wicked Games'. 3. Lusine - Gravity Lusine is based in Seattle & releases his music through the very decent Ghostly International label. Occasionally I worry he is drifting too far into the arena of the coffee table but his productions are in the main too good to collapse into the placid zone. 4. 2562 - Greyscale 2562 is a Dutch producer who loosely falls into the category of dubstep. I generally despise most of the cliched 'wobble' stuff but if you look a little deeper than you'll find that some of the most exciting electronic music is happening around the fringes of the scene. 5. LV - Turnaway Another impressively spacious LV track on the Hyperdub label (home to Burial, Kode9, Zomby) mixing dub, reggae & broken beat. The 'Five Years of Hyperdub' compilation is an extensive but accessible entry point. 6. Dubbel Dutch - Fool In You Again on the fringes different styles, UK funky, garage & broken beat - its looping vocal and blasting synths are also a big nod (& maybe a little wink) to early rave productions which are a big influence on this genre. 7. Acid Brass - Lets Get Brutal Acid Brass is an album of rave/techno classics conceived by Turner-Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller & executed by The Williams Fairey Brass Band. As with these types of projects some of the tracks fall flat but a scant few of them were worth the toil and serve to enhance the musicality of the originals. This version of Nitro Delux's 'Lets Get Brutal' is the worthiest track from the album. 8. Lucky Dragons - Open Melody 'Art-drone' duo Lucky Dragons have crept up on me to become one of my favourite bands, creating their own inimitable pallet of repeating noises drones & twisting them into something really beautiful. They've recorded 21 albums since 1999 apparently. This is from their most recent 'Rara Speaks'. 9. Quincy Jones - Exodus The closest thing to jazz we've had on the World Service. Quincy Jones is a man who is as near to the status of a god as a mortal can hope for. He's worked as a trumpet player, musical arranger, film composer, television producer, has 79 Grammy nominations to his name. 10. Yamasuki Singers - Yama Yama The booklet for this cd says 'educational-bubblegum-multi-cultural-psycho-rock-opera' & anything I offer beyond that will be valueless. 11. The Upsetters - Tight Spot The fabulous Upsetters with the even more fabulous Lee Scratch Perry at the controls. 12. Library Tapes - Terese Scratchy soliloquy from Library Tapes 'Like Green Grass Against A Blue Sky' album. 13. Top Drawer - Song Of A Sinner We finish this podcast with a redemptive psychedelic triumph. I'd never heard of Top Drawer until his track was made available on a compilation entitled 'Forge Your Own Chains: Heavy Psychedelic Ballads & Dirges'.
