Every so often a beer comes along and things just click. A combination of brilliant branding, a brilliant brewery and, of course, a brilliant beverage are essential ingredients for a beer that resonates with the consumer. And with London Black, the 4.4% Nitro Porter from Anspach & Hobday, you've got just that. The brewery, founded by Paul Anspach & Jack Hobday back in 2013, has gone from strength to strength in recent years and much of that growth can be attributed to their flagship beer.London Black has fundamentally changed and redefined the brewery and business with approximately 70+% of their output the popular Nitro Porter. With that in mind, we invited brewery co-founder Paul to speak at our Brewers Lectures in Bristol last week. In his lecture, Paul outlined the importance of the brand and how crucial factors such as an authentic, believable story coupled with clear messaging have helped elevate the beer.He also explained how the team are striving to establish London Black as The beer of London and to forge the association between London and London Black such that for a beer drinker, any visit to the city would not be complete without a pint of London Black. Monopoly is the bestselling boardgame of all time. In this episode you'll learn how Monopoly was invented. Until the truth came out, in the 1970s, we used to believe that a man named Charles Darrow created the game in 1934 in a burst of genius. But some dedicated sleuths discovered the real invention story. It's a fascinating story about the power of collaboration and social networks. You'll hear about the battle against Capitalism, the Supreme Court, Quakers, a political campaign—this story has it all! Monopoly emerged over a 30-year period, with creative contributions by hundreds of people. Each person contributed a small spark of creativity along the way. The story of Monopoly demonstrates the power of collaboration to drive creativity. Stouts and porters, dark malty beers maybe used to have a reputation of being a bit stuffy but there has been a recent trend of these drinks growing in popularity.Guinness, the biggest player in the market, has seen a big increase in sales, for a period being the bests selling pint in pubs for the first time. There's been a big interest in it from young people, there is a whole genre of social media influencers comparing pints and even Kim Kardashian was photographed with one in London last St Patricks day. In this programme, Jimi Famurewa looks at how a drink that is so ubiquitous and established becomes a cool. Jimi goes to the wildly popular Devonshire Arms to meet Oisin Rogers and drink the arguably best pint of Guinness in London. The story of dark beer starts with porter in London and Jimi talks to beer writer Laura Hadland about the history of porter and stouts between the UK and Irish capitals.Adding nitrogen to stout and porter is a huge part of Guinness's success. Jimi visits Anspach and Hobday, brewers who are taking on Guinness with their own nitro porter, London Black.Jimi also look at the history of stout and porter in West Africa with Eko brewery who are taking inspiration from the continent including the Guinness brewed in Nigeria.Social media is a huge part of the interest in Guinness. Jimi sits down with a pint to talk to Ian Ryan who runs the shitlondonguinness Instagram page and has written a book One Man's Search for the Perfect Pint of Guinness, who is credited in having a big part in this trend.Produced in Bristol by Sam Grist

Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
A recent article from Paste Magazine called Iconic Craft Breweries Are Completely Surrendering to IPA Dominance has divided opinion on IPAs in discussions online amongst beer lovers. As someone who has a love-hate relationship with IPAs (mostly Hazy IPAs using Citra, Simcoe and Mosaic that look and taste like the next Hazy IPA), this article got me thinking about the nature of marketing IPAs, why we brew them more than anything else, and how lager fits into it all.Maybe there's room for breweries out there to swim upstream and focus their energies on dark beers, such as Anspach & Hobday's London Dark.Either way, these are my fermenting thoughts on IPA and whether too should be taking a leaf our of Sierra Nevada's book and mainly pushing them to our customers.Follow Hop Forward on Social MediaFacebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn
