Barbara Smith is a Movement legend— the kind of courageous activist, powerful thinker, persistent organizer and whole-hearted doer who keeps the Movement moving. She is co-founder of the Combahee River Collective and co-author of the acclaimed 1977 statement that has been one of the most influential Black feminist documents of the twentieth century—“Our politics evolve from a healthy love for ourselves, our sisters, and our community, which allows us to continue our struggle and work.” She's been a freedom fighter for over half a century—a long time in the life of a person, but, as she knows, the blink of an eye in the life of a struggle, and so she is neither nostalgic for a ship that's already left the shore nor interested in burnishing a legacy. Rather, she is leaning forward—on the move and in the mix—still fighting for peace and freedom and joy and justice, still asking the most insistent and burning questions: How do we name this political moment? Where do we go from here? What does the known demand of us now? Here is Barbara Smith in conversation with Bill Ayers on December 5, 2024 at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, New York.

Full interview only available on patreon.com/michaeldeconBill Ayers is an American education theorist and activist. He is most widely known for being a co-founder and leader of the Weather Underground, a radical left-wing organization active during the 1960s and 1970s. The group opposed the Vietnam War and engaged in controversial activities, including bombings of government buildings. Ayers was a fugitive for a time but eventually turned himself in, though many charges against him were dismissed due to prosecutorial misconduct.Later, Ayers became a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, focusing on education reform and social justice. His academic work emphasizes progressive teaching practices and the role of education in empowering marginalized communities. He authored several books, including Fugitive Days: A Memoir, which details his experiences with the Weather Underground. Ayers remains a polarizing figure due to his past activism and outspoken views.
When Freedom is the Question… was published on September 10, and we had a book launch that night at our home-away-from-home, Pilsen Community Books, in conversation with Eve Ewing. We traveled to Women and Children First, Seminary Coop, The Wooden Shoe in Philadelphia, Book and Puppet in Easton, PA, Riff Raff in Providence, Firestorm in Asheville, NC, Red Emma's in Baltimore, Busboys and Poets in DC, the PIT (Property is Theft!!) in Brooklyn, and more. I read at public libraries, coffee shops, and Movement venues like Haymarket House, Hasta Muerte, and The James Connelly Social Club. A couple of the events were taped, one at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY where I was in conversation with the legendary thinker and activist Barbara Smith, co-author of the Combahee River Collective statement, and one at La Pena in Oakland where I was in conversation with Cat Brooks, organizer, activist, and KPFA radio host---Under the Tree will drop those spicy conversations in the future. I was honored and often awed to be in conversation with several other powerful comrades and dazzling friends: Lisa Lee, Danaka Katovich, Alice Kim, Damon Williams, Jacqui Lyden, Daniel Kisslinger, Martha Biondi, Adam Bush, James Michael MacDonald, Jeff Jones, Martha Swan, and more.

As we continue to name this moment, conversing with Dr. Kevin Kumashiro, Bill Ayers, and Dr. Jonathan Gyurko, we turn to expert Pencil Buster, President of AFT, Randi Weingarten. We last spoke with Randi on July 19th of this year (episode available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts). So much has changed since then. When we last spoke, President Biden was still in the race for re-election, with increasingly grim prospects. Now, we sit in the aftermath of the dreaded result, Trump re-elected to the office of President of the United States. So what comes next? What do we do to meet the needs of all of us, not just a few of us, here and now? Randi helps us find what we need to fight for a better future- watch this lecture from Randi to further rally your spirit. BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. Returning Pencil Buster and longtime social justice educator-activist Bill Ayers joins Dr. Tim and Dr. Johnny to continue the work of naming this strange moment. Building on our conversations with Dr. Kevin Kumashiro and with David Pepper, Bill helps us reckon with where we are. It's a moment of contradiction, as American voters chose both their public schools and Donald Trump, who vows to unmake public education as we know it. This moment is one of duality as our population becomes ever-increasingly diverse while efforts to celebrate that diversity come under attack. So where do we go from here? Bill helps us chart the path forward. BustED Pencils: Fully Leaded Education Talk is part of Civic Media. Subscribe to the podcast to be sure not to miss out on a single episode! Plus, we hear updates from the Poor People's Army march on Monday.Bill Ayers joins us to talk about the comparisons — and contrasts — between now and bloody 1968. We hear about a musical comparing the present and historical moment that's part of a week's worth of counter-programming at Chicago's Co-Prosperity Center. And as Bernie Sanders makes the makes the case for guaranteed health care, we hear from Illinois nurses who have gone on strike and turn to a protest from Workers Strike Back.Plus, executive director and correspondent Bob Hennelly gives us updates from the floor of the United Center. This is We Decide: America at the Crossroads, from the Pacifica Radio Network. The activists from the militant peace organization Code Pink—in conjunction with the Dissenters, Jewish Voice for Peace, Students for Justice in Palestine, and a host of others—are calling for mass mobilizations in Chicago at the Democratic National Convention, which will be held from August 19-22, 2024. Their goal is to issue a thundering response to the US-sponsored, Israeli-led and preannounced genocide in Gaza, and to shine an illuminating light on US complicity with Israel in destroying Palestinian lives and communities. This episode is a broadcast of a webinar with Eleanor Stein, Medea Benjamin, and Bill Ayers organized by Code Pink earlier this month. We urge everyone to come to Chicago if at all possible, and to contribute to building an irresistible peace and justice movement NOW!
Very excited to have Jamie Weinstein on The Lonely Podcast. Jamie is a journalist and a political commentator. His work has been featured on The Daily Caller, the Rolling Stones, and the Daily Beast, and he has appeared on MSNBC and Fox News and was a guest on Real Time with Bill Maher, among others. Jamie is also the host of The Dispatch Podcast Monday show, as well as The Jamie Weinstein Show. One of the reasons I wanted to speak to Jamie is because of his ability to effectively converse with challenging and “controversial” figures like Mehdi Hasan and Bill Ayers. In today's world, many in the “Podcast Sphere” invite very controversial figures to just “have a conversation.” However, more often than not, these conversations become a tool for bad actors to engage in manipulative propaganda without being effectively challenged by the interviewer. Jamie is an excellent example of how one should engage in challenging conversation with notoriously manipulative guests. In our conversation, we discuss the Oct. 7th massacre and the aftermath, the future of the Jewish community in the diaspora, college campus demonstrations, America's involvement in the Middle East, the rise in Anti-semitism in Europe, public opinion on Israel, Iran's military power, how to effectively converse with “controversial figures,” and much more. It was a true pleasure to have a fruitful discussion on these many different topics with Jamie. Chicagoland area is home to more Palestinians than anywhere else in the U.S., with over 18,000 living in Cook County alone. The Palestinian community has led powerful protests that have led to Chicago becoming the largest city in the country to endorse a ceasefire resolution. It is in the midst of this atmosphere that we gathered for an urgent exchange with Rashid Khalidi, the preeminent historian of the Palestinian national struggle, and the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University in conversation with activists Ricardo Gamboa of the Hoodoisie and Latinxs for Palestine, and Bill Ayers from Under the Tree. The event served to not only raise awareness but to also raise funds for Palestine Legal. The energy was fierce, the mood determined, the spirit razor-sharp. We left that gathering a little wiser, more resolute, and fixed on turning our anger into action and our dreams of a world at peace into reality.

All this week we have been presenting a special classic TruNews investigative series on the life and times of Barry Soetoro, also known as Barack Hussein Obama. Rick was prompted to present these special episodes of interviews that he has done over the years with the Obamas back in the headlines, and with possible prospects of Michelle Obama jumping in on Election 2024. Rick Wiles did dozens of interviews on the topic of Barry Soetoro, so it was difficult to pick the best ones. Today we present a follow up interview to the program from yesterday as we investigate the trail into the former president with TruNews guest Jack Cashill. An independent writer and producer, Jack Cashill has written a dozen books under his own name and collaborated on a dozen more. He has a Ph.D. from Purdue University in American studies. Cashill, in his book Deconstructing Obama, proposes that Bill Ayers, co-founder of the militant radical left-wing organization Weather Underground, had authored President Barack Obama's autobiography Dreams from My Father. In this interview from September 2012, TruNews host Rick Wiles and Jack Cashill seek to discover the true past of Barry Soetoro Rick Wiles, Doc Burkhart. Cashill, in his book Deconstructing Obama, proposes that Bill Ayers, co-founder of the militant radical left-wing organization Weather Underground, had authored President Barack Obama's autobiography Dreams from My Father. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Jeffrey Haas. A long time attorney for the People's Law Office in Illinois, Haas represented Fred Hampton and member's of Chicago's chapter of the Black Panther Party. Haas talked with Hampton and heard him speak against Racism on a regular basis. Hampton had such an impact that Haas remained dedicated to fighting to expose the government-led, White Supremacist conspiracy to assassinate the young chairman. He compiled the years of deceptions and courtroom battles in his 2010 book, The Assassination of Fed Hampton: How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther. We'll discuss the role of FBI informant William O'Neal, a black male recruited to spy on black people when he was 19-years-old. O'Neal is accused of drugging Hampton the December night in 1969 when the Panther leader was killed in his sleep. He admitted to providing a detailed floor-plan of the premises. Haas describes O'Neal as a "moral eunuch." We'll discuss the years of lies to conceal this unjust murder and how Fred Hampton's assassination relates to other incidents of Chicago history, like the murder of Emmett Till and the Torture of black males by former Police chief Jon Burge. We'll be sure to ask for Mr. Haas's views on the film Judas & The Black Messiah as well as his upbringing in Racist Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Haas got riled when Gus referred to his longtime White comrade and former C.O.W.S. guest Bill Ayers as a criminal. Ayers, as a part of The Weathermen, was complicit in the bombing of the Pentagon and the US Capitol building. This is the same sort of minimizing and absolving of White Terrorist behavior we've been discussing with Columbine and Chicago native Ted 'Unabomber' Kaczynski. #LenardClark #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The guys have the great honor and joy of talking with the legendary Bernardine Dohrn on this episode of AirGo. Recorded on the land that she, her husband Bill Ayers, and five other families have communally stewarded for the last 40-plus years, Bernardine reflects on what she's learned about time, grief, transformation, liberation struggles, and love over a lifetime of battling imperialist white supremacy at an intensity few have ever experienced. We're so grateful for her time and love. SHOW NOTES If you're curious about Bernardine's story, we recommend the amazing podcast Mother Country Radicals, which tells the story of her involvement in radical movement and decades living underground through the eyes of her son Zayd. Listen here - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mother-country-radicals/id1625882016
Zayd Dohrn was born underground and on the run from the FBI. His parents, Bernadine Dohrn and Bill Ayers, were leaders of the Weather Underground — a radical leftist group born in the 70s that declared war on the United States and fought alongside anti-war activists and Black Panthers. Zayd Dohrn‘s podcast Mother Country Radicals asks his parents hard questions about their storied and revolutionary past, including their role in the bombing at the Pentagon on May 19th, 1972. Dohrn tells host Jacoby Cochran while he was familiar with the chronology of his parent's history, the podcast opened his eyes to a side of his parents and the movement he never knew.
