It's starting to get cold in Sydney. Ayako Ohtake, a Sydney-based Japanese soprano singer, has selected a song from an opera that truly captures the spirit of winter. This piece was composed by A. Catalani, a highly talented and significant composer often overshadowed by Puccini. On the radio, we'll be presenting it sung by Maria Callas, one of the greatest divas in the history of opera. Ayako hosts monthly music segment called VIVA! Opera for SBS Japanese.
Have you ever heard Contemplazione, a piece for orchestra by Catalani, the composer of La Wally? Have you ever heard “Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?”—but arranged for piano? These are two of the offerings in this eclectic, stimulating program. Catalani, “Contemplazione” Catalani, “Ebben? Ne andró lontana,” from “La Wally” Stravinsky, “Le Baiser de la fée” Shchedrin, “Changing of the Guard” from “Carmen Suite” Fauré, Pavane Churchill-Walford, “Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” Tveitt, “Sonata etere” Sibelius, “Was It a Dream?” Weill, “My Ship”

The Bulgarian soprano Mara Coleva (12 March 1922 - 22 October 2014) was a vital and versatile singer, the majority of whose career took place in Italy in the 1950s through the very early sixties. Her most prominent and readily-accessible recordings are all for the RAI (Radio-Televisione Italiana), including the role of Silvana in a 1955 recording from Milano and two Martini & Rossi-sponsored RAI concerts, one in Milano in 1957, and the other in Roma in 1961. These recordings reveal an artist with a well-schooled voice with a powerful dramatic sense, but one whose life remains to a great extent shrouded in mystery. It is an enormous thrill and privilege to present this great (if virtually unknown) artist in repertoire ranging from Rossini, Catalani, Cilea, Verdi, and twentieth-century Italian composers Ottorino Respighi and Lodovico Rocca. The episode ends with Coleva in a surprising and superbly-sung rendition of Agata's big scena from Il franco cacciatore (better known as Weber's Der Freischütz!) Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly support at whatever level you can afford.

In this week's episode I talk with Harry Catalani, about what it's like to work in the beer industry (Anheuser Busch), move all around the country for work, and how to decide when it's time to leave after 6.5 years. We cover:* Moving to new cities and establishing a life multiple times in your twenties* Punching above your weight when you're total unqualified to do so, and how being humble can help you learn what you don't know* How to take ownership over your career path (without panicking)* Determining how you view your career (like Mount Everest or like a rock climbing wall at a gym) and understanding which model gives you more personal satisfactionIf you know someone who will love this episode, please share with a friend, and thanks to everyone who has already shared! Thanks for reading Professional Life Crisis! Stefano Catalani may be the new executive director of the Museum of Northwest Art (MoNA) in La Conner, but he is hardly new to the museum, and certainly not to the Pacific Northwest. After leaving behind an art career in Italy to pursue a relationship, he quickly found a home in Seattle and within the Pacific Northwest art community. Stefano joined MoNA in January of this year, taking the reins from the steady hands of Joanna Sikes, whose tenure saw the museum build up its collection, support community outreach through the arts, provide a venue for local artists, and remind all of us who live in the Skagit Valley of its beauty. All this while navigating a pandemic over the past two years. In this podcast episode we'll learn a little about Stefano's back story, his relationship with MoNA and what made him gravitate to his new position -- but most of all, we'll discover just what puts the magic in the Magic Skagit for a man whose professional career has been dedicated to bringing people to art.

Catalani: La Wally. A verismo opera with all the requisites of jealousy, attempted murder, forgiveness and a tragic death scene for the 2 lovers. Noted most for a famous soprano aria, featured prominently in the French cult movie "Diva" and ever since known as the Diva Aria.
