In the first of this two-part series, we are highlighting Growing for Good and the relationships it fosters between farms and food banks. Since 2020, the Growing for Good program, a partnership between PCC Community Markets, Harvest Against Hunger, and Seattle Neighborhood Farmers Markets, has provided fresh produce to hunger relief agencies and additional income for local farmers. We sat down with two of these pairings to learn more about how Growing for Good has impacted their work. Note: This episode was recorded in October 2023 and some information may be out of date. Please visit Growing for Good online to learn more about their farm and hunger relief partners, current programming, and new fundraising campaign. In this episode, we first hear from Regino Flores and his son Isai Flores of Regino Farms. Regino Farms is a certified organic vegetable and berry farm located in Burlington, Washington, owned and operated by Regino Flores and his wife Martina Gutierrez. After decades of working in the farming industry, they began their own venture through Viva farms' incubator program in 2009. Since then, three of their children have joined the expanding operation which now comprises 11 acres in the Skagit Valley. Regino's sells at multiple farmers markets and supplies several food retailers, recently expanding to include the Ballard Food Bank through the Growing for Good program. Later in the episode we'll hear from the Director of Programs at the Ballard Food Bank, Kathleen Murphy, who will tell us about the other side of Growing for Good, and how the partnership has benefitted participating hunger relief organizations like hers.

This Tales of the Magic Skagit podcast episode encompasses two topics, which while seemingly unrelated at first consideration, actually have a common theme: the past, present, and future of the Skagit Valley as viewed through an artistic lens.We start this episode off with Laynie Moran, the Skagit County Historical Museum's Collections Manager, who is heading up a first ever art contest and exhibit with the unlikely theme, "Everyone's a Critic." This upcoming exhibit could, however, also be called "Everyone's an Artist," since the goal of Laynie's project is to showcase art from anyone in the county, regardless of age or skill level, to contribute a work of art of their own creation. The only criterion for the entries, whatever the chosen medium, is that they adhere to the theme "The Past, Present, and Future of Skagit County." Entries are due by June 1, 2025, and the exhibit opens and voting begins on June 20. Details and registration forms are available at the museum and its website, www.skagitcounty.net/museum.On the subject of Skagit Valley's past, we turn next to Ann Maroney, the office and store manager at the museum, to learn about its current exhibit on the life of Lawrence (Laurie) Wells. In describing Laurie's life, it's hard to know where to begin. He was a largely self-taught artist whose works captured the beauty of his Skagit Valley home through an astonishing number of paintings across a variety media and styles. But he and his wife, whose love story is part of the exhibit as well, were also active in the early grange and socialist movements of the early 20th century. In addition, Laurie could justifiably be called the godfather of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, thanks to his promotion of the Magic Skagit's bulb farms and his landscape design skills in showcasing them decades ago.Suffice it to say that the museum's current exhibit, "Laurie Wells: A Skagit Original," is a multi-layered tribute to an individual whose deep and abiding love of where we live combines works of art with a glimpse into lesser known aspects of Skagit Valley history that will appeal to the eye, heart, head, and soul. And with the exhibit to come in June, Skagitonians of all ages are invited to celebrate Laurie Wells' legacy in a way he would have undoubtedly appreciated: through art.

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival 2025 is underway in Washington state and frequent contributor Matt Shea joins us for his annual survey of the venues and activities that have made the monthlong event a great Pacific Northwest tradition.

EK On the Go

Join us on Power of Place for a conversation with Scott Dolfay—a faithful craftsman drawn into a century-old story of memory, myth, and the unexpected grace of family. From the Aleutians to the Skagit Valley to a Mission Revival mansion in Seattle's affluent Windermere neighborhood, Scott's journey is one of quiet conviction and sacred craft. rugged craftsmanship, and a sacred commitment to place. Hear how Scott's life was transformed by a house that touched the world—and, for a fleeting moment, came to embody the soul of a community. The 1907 Roland Denny Mansion—named as Loch Kelden, which echoes both its founders and a distant Scottish mist—was recently demolished, closing the chapter on a remarkable space of memory, ministry, and meaning. Once the summer home of a city founder and later the Pacific Northwest hub of the Unification Church, an often-misunderstood new religious movement, the stately residence stood as a space where unlikely unities quietly took root: between the Denny lineage and the Duwamish people, between missionary work and neighborhood resistance, between faith traditions, chosen family, and those often pushed to the margins. At one point, even a murder next door cast a long and eerie shadow across its tapestried halls. Though its stucco walls have fallen, the spirit of Loch Kelden—and Scott's decades-long stewardship—remain a quiet covenant of purpose, struggle, and love.Listen as Scott unveils a cast of unforgettable figures: inclusion advocate and Denny descendant Greg Palmer, civic leader Brewster Denny, and even Reverend Sun Myung Moon himself. Through Scott's story, we reflect on what it means to hold space—for others, for belief, and for unity in a fractured world. "Every generation has to decide what they value. I take some consolation in the fact that we did hold on to the building, preserve it as long as we did, did have the centennial. A lot of people have wonderful memories there—it was like a second home." ~Scott Dolfay

We kick off Part 2 with Skagit County Historical Museum executive director Jo Wolfe explaining how the Wick Peth exhibit came together, and the museum's goal of not only sharing his story but the story of rodeo in the Skagit Valley as well. I first heard of Wick Peth a few years back at the Skagit County Fair. There was a bull on display named "Little Wick," and I was curious about his name. That's when I learned that the Magic Skagit was home to an individual who was famous to anyone who loved rodeo: Wick Peth, a professional bull fighter. As a student of Skagit Valley history, the name Peth was certainly familiar as one of the earliest immigrant families to the valley. Wick's grandfather was John J. Peth. But I wanted to know more about Wick. Thankfully, the Skagit County Historical Museum also wanted to tell his story, which is the subject of the current exhibit at the "top of the hill" in La Conner. In addition to sharing the life and career of Wick Peth, the museum's exhibit also recounts the history of rodeo in the Skagit Valley. I had the great pleasure of doing an interview at the museum with executive director Jo Wolfe, and two individuals who know Wick's story in a way very few do: his son and daughter, Dan Peth and Liza Bott. In this first of our two part series on the life and legacy of Wick Peth and Skagit Valley rodeo, Dan and Liza recount their memories of their famous father and offer a glimpse into the agricultural life of the valley from decades ago.

Bob heard God speak at a Bible Study with Prisoners. Then this happened... Jesus was known for the way he interacted with those on the margins of society - the tax collectors everyone despised, the lepers no-one would touch, the cripples and the prostitutes society rejected. Jesus' teaching and interactions constantly reflected God's heart for those who had been forgotten and left behind. So today, when we hear the Spirit as Jesus' continuing voice, we shouldn't be surprised that we find themselves in similar places! That is, we will be led to love the poor as Jesus did. In this episode, we talk about the revelatory work of Holy Spirit among the poor with someone who is doing just that. With his wife Gracie, Bob Ekblad lives out the heart of Jesus through the power and revelation of the Spirit. After living several years working in sustainable farming in Honduras and then studying theology in France, Bob and Gracie lead a church community known as Tierra Nueva (New Earth) in Washington state USA. Here, they come alongside immigrants, street people, addicts and prisoners to demonstrate the love of Jesus in practical and profound ways. You'll hear about: Bob and Gracie's fascinating story from a kibbutz in the Middle East to the cornfields of Honduras, the study halls of Paris and the streets of Washington state… How working with impoverished peasants in sustainable farming led to an unexpected request: “A lot of us are tough. Some of us are violent. We don't put God first, but we notice you do. Could we begin our weekly farming courses with a Bible study?” Bob tells of his surprise and excitement as well as a deep sense of trepidation: “You pull out a Bible in that setting, and the people look like stray city dogs who are used to being kicked. They sleek off and lurk away, fearful of being beaten by the Bible, because that's how the Bible has been used…” How reading the Bible with semi-literate, impoverished Latinos expanded Bob's view of the Gospel story “When people are marginalised and from the lowest classes of society, they abandon all hope and throw themselves into a life of drinking and violence.” A defining moment in Bob's journey towards understanding the Holy Spirit… Bob and Gracie came from a background of seeing only the abuses of Holy Spirit ministry and were fearful of engaging with Charismatic Christians. Yet, they recognised that their ministry desperately needed the power of the Holy Spirit, particularly as they were dealing with hardened criminals and addicts who easily relapsed. When Bob found himself in a charismatic conference, he felt the need to pray a prayer of protection over the Christians praying as they prayed! Then he received a piercingly accurate prophetic word that changed his life: “I see you in a circle of men in red uniforms sitting on blue plastic chairs. I think they're prisoners. I hear the Father saying, “I love how you love my prisoners.” The shift in Bob's ministry after receiving prayer for a healing anointing. Bob tells how Jesus' teaching from Luke 15 became relevant for a self-confessed racist, neo-Nazi gang member in jail who wanted to learn how to get along with Mexicans. After the Bible study, a word from God and a simple prayer led to a miraculous healing for one of the jail members. The connection between hearing the Spirit and developing a heart for those who have suffered, even violent offenders. Bob shares how hearing God speak about the health conditions and root emotional problems of others revealed the kind of grace that did not require change of even faith to bring healing. In his words, "pre-emptive love doesn't require a response - it elicits a response." About Bob Ekblad Bob and Gracie Ekblad are founders and co-directors of Tierra Nueva (New Earth) in Burlington, Washington. Together they minister at Tierra Nueva and at their home-based retreat centre, New Earth Refuge in the Skagit Valley.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of Anne's journey is her dedication to community involvement. The Dahlia House isn't just a farm; it's a place where friendships blossom and bonds are forged over a shared love for flowers. Bruce McCormick (known to many as "Honker" for his love of waterfowl) passed away on Thursday, September 21, just a few months shy of his 92nd birthday. His was a larger-than-life personality that embodied so many of the things I appreciate about living in the Magic Skagit. During the time I got to know Bruce, I recorded some podcast interviews with him about pioneer history as he learned it growing up as the grandson of one of the valley's earliest White settlers. Back in May of this year, I recorded an interview with Bruce to talk about his perspective on the Skagit Valley's annual Tulip Festival, the story of Isaac Chilberg, early farming history, and finally an anecdote about his maternal uncles and their involvement in the First World War. At the time of this recording, I certainly hadn't envisioned it as my last interview with Bruce -- but having finally gotten around to editing and mixing our conversation from last May, I offer it now as the last occasion upon which we can be treated to the voice of Bruce McCormick and the stories that voice shared. I wish there had been more. I'm thankful for the ones I heard.

Maggie Telford is the Collections Intern at the Skagit County Historical Museum in La Conner, WA. Her work at the museum has been funded by a Diversity in Local History Grant, and the task she has taken on is nothing less than the inventorying and reinterpretation of the museum's entire collection of Native American artifacts in order to re-tell its story of the First Peoples of the Skagit Valley. In this Beaver Tales podcast episode I'm joined by Michelle Calvin and Tony Cladoosby to talk with Maggie about her work and its significance. We'll all get an opportunity to appreciate Maggie's efforts when the Skagit County Historical Museum re-opens its Native American exhibit on June 8. This Beaver Tales' episode will give you a sense of just what those efforts have been over a period of many months. Tony Cladoosby also reflects on how an intergenerational lifestyle informed his knowledge of his tribal identity and the way of life of the first Skagitonians.

Last year I wrote a story that proved quite popular with our Tales of the Magic Skagit audience. It was the story of a failed socialist utopia that was created just southeast of Blanchard, WA (the birthplace of Edward R. Murrow) at the end of the 19th century. It was called Equality Colony, and it was the inspiration of an association called the Brotherhood for Cooperative Commonwealth (BCC), which established a headquarters in Edison, WA — hence the title of our story, “Welcome to the People's Republic of Edison, Comrades!” We got a lot of great response from this story, including from folks who had some additional history to share — most notably from Skagit Valley's own “Territorial Daughters,” whom I thank for the addendum to the original story which I include in this podcast version.
