Neal Reid, son of Charles Reid, returns to “At Home with Roby” to continue sharing memories of his father’s store, the iconic Park-N-Shop on Wilkinson Blvd.  On our last show with Neal, the conversation ended at 1956 when the first Park-N-Shop burned to the ground.  Charles continued operating the store out of a shack in the parking lot, while also overseeing construction of the new store that opened in 1958.  Running the new store was a true family affair with Charles’ sister running the snack bar, his brother-in-laws manning the meat and produce departments, and his brother overseeing shipping and receiving and the store’s three tractor trailers.  Behind the scenes, Charles was busy brainstorming the store’s hot deals and extravagant promotions that many longtime Charlotteans remember fondly today – 10 cent hotdogs, car giveaways, surprise appearances by Smiley the Clown and more.  Tune in to hear more stories and happy memories, and to learn about our plans to bring the building back to life as Park-N-Workshop. Neal Reid, son of Charles Reid, joins Trent and Patrick on “At Home with Roby” to share memories of his father’s life and store – the iconic Park-N-Shop on Wilkinson Blvd.  Originally built in 1958, Park-N-Shop was the premier grocery store during the 1950s and 60s.  Together with Red Hill Ventures and LaBella Associates, our Roby Commercial team is renovating the space that has been sitting vacant since 2004.  The modernized building, being rebranded as Park-N-Workshop, will maintain its overall exterior shape with its distinctive sloped roof and steel arches, while the interior is completely overhauled into a 33,000 square foot office space accommodating five to six tenants in custom suites.   Park-N-Shop was a special place for many Charlotteans, and Charles Reid was a respected member and leader of the community.  In 1956, the original Park-N-Shop building caught fire and burned to the ground.  Charles was chief of the volunteer fire department at the time.  The morning after the fire, many customers arrived at the store to show their support and continued to shop with Charles from a temporary shack in the parking lot until the new Park-N-Shop was complete in 1958.   Tune in for more Park-N-Shop and Reid family history.  And be on the lookout for a second show with Neal in early April.  We barely scratched the surface during this interview and have a lot more ground to cover!  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

THE SNOWBOARD PROJECT Charles Reid • A Snowboarder's Snowboarder •  Episode 155   Charles Reid has had a pretty amazing 15 year pro career, first going to open qualifiers at the US Open (where he finished fourth in the slopestyle.) He went on to back to back rail jam victories at the Open in 2011 and 2012 - before qualifying for the 2014 Canadian Olympic  team in 2014. After injuring his leg- he had complications - the kind that had him going under the knife five times in six months and almost cost him a leg, literally.    So he turned his efforts to the backcountry where he has been carving out a name for himself since 2016, culminating in his own movie project this season called Who Cares. From Doc Weaver's website: Upon graduation from college, Weaver pursued a flying career as a pilot in the United States Air Force. In addition to flying, painting gave him an outlet that added much to his life. His last assignment prior to retirement brought him to New Mexico in 1974. He retired from active duty in 1976 and from that time on he has painted full time. In 1974 Doc Weaver joined the New Mexico Watercolor Society. He was awarded Charter Signature Membership in this society. From 1972 through 1976 Weaver was employed as a workshop director with Tony Van Hassalt's Painting Holidays Workshops. Van Hasssalt's workshops always had a stable of top-notch artists teaching painting. He directed many workshops, principally for John Pike, Tom Hill, George Cheropov, Jack Pellew, Tony Van Hassalt and Charles Reid. Over the past 30 years he also conducted his own watercolor workshops throughout the West. In 1977 Doc moved from Albuquerque to Santa Fe, where he has remained active in the arts community. During the next several years he served on the Santa Fe City Arts Council, the Board of Directors and Master Selection Committee of the Santa Fe Institute of Fine Arts, and has been an Officer and Trustee, Museum of New Mexico Foundation. Weaver splits his time between painting outdoors and painting in the studio. Sketches completed on location are a valuable resource for his larger studio work. In addition to watercolor he also paints in oil and acrylic mediums. Many of his paintings are in private collections and in the collections of museums throughout the country. He is a member of the United States Air Force Artist Program and his paintings are represented in the United States Air Force Art Collection. As a belated Valentine's present, The Diction Police is back with all new episodes for 2013! Miss Kitty Fantastico and I are all settled in our new apartment and I have quite a few episodes already recorded, so we should be able to stay on track for this spring! This week and next we'll be talking about some arias from Händel's Messiah. On this episode, tenor Charles Reid goes through the text of "Comfort Ye... Ev'ry Valley", and then we discuss some of the problematic traditional misuse of diction with Jan and Catherine McDaniel, from the faculty of the Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University, focusing on the words COMFORT and SAITH (plus other words that tend to be mispronounced), rolling Rs in the combination CR and GR, the pronunciation of the letter X and a whole lot about schwas. The score for Händel's Messiah can be found as a free download at Petrucci Music Library (IMSLP) and you can find the libretto here ("Comfort Ye... Ev'ry Valley" begins the Messiah). We talk about the word COMFORT quite a bit on this episode and I promised to post YouTubes--I found one with Jerry Hadley singing, this one where tenor Howard Crook sings COMFORT correctly at least once :-) and a very interesting BBC TV show about Comfort Ye with Trevor Pinnock discussing it, Kurt Streit singing. There are, of course, a ton of YouTubes of this recit and aria, have fun listening to them and comparing the diction to what we talk about in the episode! Please feel free to contact me with questions, comments or suggestions here, at the Facebook page, on Twitter or directly at ellen@ellenrissinger.com
