Hey there, Fellow Watchers! This week on Born to Watch, we dive deep into one of the most whimsical, enchanting, and downright bizarre films of the 1970s, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This technicolour dreamscape of a movie, adapted from Roald Dahl's beloved 1964 children's novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is a kaleidoscopic journey that weaves together childlike wonder, satirical wit, and a dash of dark humour. But for those who've seen it, it's much more than just a kids' movie—it's a cinematic experience that has left a lasting impact on pop culture, filmmaking, and how we imagine the wildest corners of our childhood fantasies.Directed by Mel Stuart and released in 1971, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory gave the world an enduring yet enigmatic character brought to life by the genius of Gene Wilder. Wilder's portrayal of Willy Wonka, with his trademark purple velvet coat, manic energy, and mysterious charm, is iconic. But the film isn't just about a quirky candy maker—it's about dreams, consequences, and the weird journey from innocence to maturity. Today, we're cracking open that golden ticket and exploring the layers of storytelling, visual splendour, and character depth that make this film a must-watch for every generation. The Dreamlike Cinematography: A Visual FeastFrom the first frame, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory draws us into a world between the fantastical and the surreal. The film's cinematography, spearheaded by Arthur Ibbetson, feels deliberately disjointed from reality. The factory is where anything is possible—giant gummy bears, rivers of chocolate, and wallpaper you can lick. Using vibrant colours, practical effects, and innovative set design turns the film into a visual explosion still captivating more than 50 years later. One of the most stunning sequences comes early when the lucky ticket winners first step into Wonka's factory and are greeted by the Chocolate Room. The juxtaposition of the drab, muted tones of the outside world with the bursting, hyper-saturated colours inside the factory immediately transports us to a place where the ordinary laws of reality no longer apply. Every detail in this scene—from the candy trees to the chocolate river—feels like it was ripped straight from the wildest corners of a child's imagination. Yet, it's executed with a precision that keeps it from feeling cartoonish. And who could forget the unsettling tunnel scene? What starts as a gentle boat ride turns into a psychedelic nightmare. The flashing colours, dizzying camera angles, and unsettling imagery—coupled with Wilder's chilling recitation—make even the bravest viewers squirm. It's a perfect example of how the film balances whimsy with moments of genuine unease. This technique makes Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory much more layered than your children's film.Gene Wilder's Wonka: A Performance for the AgesWhen it comes to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, it's impossible to talk about the movie without spending time on Gene Wilder's portrayal of Willy Wonka. Wilder brings an incredible depth to the character, making him charming yet aloof, kind yet mischievous, and ultimately unpredictable. His entrance alone, stumbling through his factory gates with a cane only to somersault forward and rise with a grin, tells you everything you need to know: this man thrives on deception, mystery, and the thrill of keeping everyone guessing.Wilder's Wonka is not the traditionally heroic figure you might expect from a film aimed at children. There's something slightly off about him. He watches as the children fall victim to their vices—gluttony, greed, or pride—and while he expresses concern, there's always a twinkle in his eye. He's a trickster, just as likely to reward you as he is to teach you a hard lesson. And Wilder walks this tightrope perfectly, making Wonka endlessly watchable and infinitely complex. The film never shies away from showing us the darker side of Wonka's character. There's a controlled chaos to him, an edge that suggests he's more dangerous than he seems. Whether it's how he dismisses Augustus Gloop's drowning in the chocolate river or his cryptic “Good day, sir!” outburst toward Charlie, Wonka keeps the audience on edge. This unpredictability is what makes him such a memorable figure in cinema history. The Story: A Morality Play in Candy-Coated WrappingAt its core, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a morality tale. Each of the children who wins a golden ticket represents a different vice—gluttony, greed, pride, and sloth. As they progress through the factory, they're confronted with temptations that ultimately lead to their downfall. Augustus Gloop's gluttony gets him sucked into the chocolate river, Veruca Salt's greed leads her down the garbage chute, and so on. Each "punishment" is delivered in a way that's both comical and, at times, chilling. What makes the film unique is how it balances this moralism with its fantastical elements. The consequences are clear, yet they're wrapped in a layer of surreal, candy-coated absurdity. The film isn't heavy-handed with its messaging, but it's impossible to miss the fact that each child's fate is a direct result of their own behaviour.Charlie Bucket, our humble hero, is the film's moral compass. Raised in poverty but rich in spirit, Charlie's simple goodness and humility starkly contrast to the other children's greed and entitlement. In the end, it's his genuine heart and good nature that earn him the ultimate prize—the entire factory. But even here, the film doesn't indulge in a sentimental ending. The lesson isn't that good behaviour always leads to material rewards but that integrity, humility, and kindness matter most, even in a world that can often seem unfair.Cultural Impact and LegacyThough Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory wasn't an immediate box-office hit, it found a second life through television reruns and home video, becoming a beloved classic for generations. Its impact on pop culture is undeniable—whether it's the Oompa Loompa songs, the countless memes, or Gene Wilder's iconic portrayal of Wonka. The film is often referenced in everything from cartoons to music videos, and its place in cinema history as one of the great fantasy films is well-earned.It's also fascinating to note how the film's themes of greed, entitlement, and the dangers of unchecked consumption still resonate today. The factory, with its promise of endless indulgence, reflects our own desires, reminding us that too much of a good thing can often lead to our downfall. In the end, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a film that transcends its whimsical surface to explore deeper themes, all while offering a visual feast and a performance by Gene Wilder that remains timeless. Whether you're watching it for the first time or the hundredth, there's always something new to discover. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

Erin and Paul review two films about free-spirited chocolate makers: Mel Stuart's 1971 Roald Dahl adaptation WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, and Lasse Hallstrom's peak-Miramax 2000 romance CHOCOLAT.
The Wonka candy empire had to start somewhere and someone decided to make a prequel to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to tell the origin tale. That someone is director Paul King, who also directed the Paddington movies. Timothee Chalamet, from the Dune movies, stars as the young Willy Wonka who arrives at an unnamed town to open up a chocolate shop. He soon finds out that it isn't going to be that easy thanks to the Chocolate Cartel. They don't want any competition and they spring the Chief of Police on the young, naive Wonka. Lows and highs, twists and turns proceed in this movie also starring Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa, Keegan Michael-Key as the Chief of Police and Oscar winner Olivia Colman as Mrs. Scrubbit. Not sure whether this movie will be a tasty treat or a big bowl of rotten lettuce? Check out this spoiler-free review to clear up that mystery. Wonka also stars Tom Davis, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Calah Lane, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Jim Carter and Rakhee Thakrar. 5 Life Changing QuotesFive Lessons from Roald Dahl – Matthew KellyGet Matthew's 60 Second Wisdom delivered to your inbox: https://www.matthewkelly.com/subscribeVideo Transcript:“My favorite movie as a child was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. Roald dahl was one of the great storytellers of the 20th century. If he were alive today, he would be 105 years old. Here are five quotes and five lessons he taught me:1. From Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: “A little nonsense now and then, is cherished by the wisest men.”Lesson: Life can get very serious at times. Lightheartedness and humor are essential ingredients for thriving and therefore cherished by the wise.2. From Danny the Champion of the World:“I will not pretend I wasn't petrified. I was. But mixed in with the awful fear was a glorious feeling of excitement. Most of the really exciting things we do in our lives scare us to death. They wouldn't be exciting if they didn't.”Lesson: We are often most afraid when we are on the brink of great new achievements and experiences. 3. From The Twitts:“You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”Lesson: Few things have more impact on our lives than our thoughts. Spend as much time as possible thinking about beauty, goodness, and wisdom. 4. From The Witches:“Real witches dress in ordinary clothes and look very much like ordinary women. They live in ordinary houses and they work in ordinary jobs.”Lesson: There are some people in this world who will intentionally try to hurt you, but they can be hard to spot at first. 5. From The Minpins:“Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.”Lesson: Life is constantly unveiling new opportunities, new ideas, new experiences, and new possibilities. Stay open!Five quotes. Ten sentences. A lifetime of lessons. He was an amazing storyteller.”If you have not read LIFE IS MESSY, order your copy today: https://amzn.to/2TTgZKn Subscribe to Matthew's YouTube Channel today! https://www.youtube.com/c/MatthewKellyAuthor/featured?sub_confirmation=1https://www.matthewkelly.comGet Matthew's 60 Second Wisdom delivered to your inbox: https://www.matthewkelly.com/subscribe The Best Version of Yourself and 60 Second Wisdom are registered trademarks.#MatthewKelly #BestVersionOfYourself #BestVersion

For years, I was haunted by a man with a briefcase who followed me everywhere I went. He wore a suit and a hat and he was always popping his head around corners, wondering if I was ready to accept My Real Job. He was kind of creepy and very persistent and, of course, a figment of my imagination. Picture Mr. Slugworth in the Willy Wonka movie from 1971, sneaking around alleys. He hadn't always been personified. Before I put a face to him, he was just a concept, a fear that hung around, making me feel really bad about myself, making myself feel doomed, somehow. I think it wasn't long after I identified him that he finally gave up. I might have told him to get lost or maybe he just ceased to have power over me – but he hasn't troubled me in a good long while now. I tell you about him now because I'd told a fellow artist about My Real Job at one point and it seemed a useful and resonant concept for them, too. When you know who you're haunted by, you can deal with it a little more clearly. To keep reading My Real Job visit the Songs for the Struggling Artist blog. If you've dotted all your i's and crossed every t when it comes to the fundamentals of selling online, connecting with other sellers and podcasts for free promotion, optimized your automated messages to make the most out of every member, and still feel like you're coming up short, why not try something a little more fantastical? For seasoned ecommerce expert Dustin Riechmann and FireCreek Snacks, it was childhood whimsy that proved their most successful promotional campaign yet, and just the ticket for standing out above the crowd. 1:15 The FireCreek Golden Ticket Giveaway Inspired by the passing of Gene Wilder, Dustin came up with FireCreek's own variation of the famous contest from Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. One in every 200 orders of $99 bundles would include a ticket for $1000 (maximum 5 winners) , and if the winner was referred to FireCreek by a friend, that friend would get $100. The winning tickets were entirely random, so no customers could game the chances. If all works out evenly, that's nearly $20,000 in sales, at the cost of $1000-$1100 in promotion. Here's 4 ways you can make the most of your own Golden Ticket giveaway. 2:20/6:20 Positive Personal Engagement. Typically serious and business focussed, Ryan the face of FireCreek was able to show a more free-spirited side during the promotion, entertaining customers while generating positive engagement. Allow your customers to connect with you personally, and they'll be more likely to think of you. 3:10 Expanding Your Base. $100 for a referral may sound steep, especially since it means FireCreek essentially bought them a $99 bundle for $1 more, but getting there means you've gained two very happy customers who already have a history of ordering from you (to great personal gain) who will likely be back to order much more. It's a small price to pay. 3:30 Good Value Reminder. If the product you use to push your 'Golden Ticket' promotion is a good enough deal on its own, then customers will keep buying it long after the giveaway has ended. Attach it to something that is already a proven success to maximize consumer coverage, and use the promotion as an opportunity to remind them how good a deal it already was. 4:00 Free Social Media Content & Promotions. Giveaways and contests, anything with a deadline, are instant- content generators. Showcasing the prize or products needed to buy, hyping up the approaching deadline to take part, featuring and promoting winners and good old fashion FOMO could keep your social media manager busy for months and provide hours of shareable content. As well you can bring the promotion to podcasts and shows as topic, providing novelty content in exchange for reaching more potential consumers. Let your imagination run wild, and take a chance on a crazy idea. You never know when it just might be a winner. In this second installment of our "Cinerama" series we took a look at the 1971 classic film "Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory." Pastor Cody compares this fan favorite to Romans 3:23 and reminds us of how we all have failed to live up to God's standard.

Today's episode of TALK JAM is sponsored by FORWARD TO CAMELOT, the time-travel thriller by Susan Sloate & Kevin Finn, about the JFK assassination, available on Kindle and paperback at Amazon and other online bookstores.Episode 23, Jam 1 is a discussion about the rioting across America in the wake of the George Floyd murder last week. Kelly and Susan have some interesting insights into not only what happened but why it happened. (Hint: Think Kristallnacht, "The Night of Broken Glass," in Nazi Germany.) Here is the link to the Officer Tatum youtube video discussed during the show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVIhRvkT8kg&feature=share&fbclid=IwAR2IVGh5zPCqOgmgasQnyuJF0J6ucgz9it0TXGCNk2H1KzRETPURptqv8_4Jam 2 is a discussion of a new film, THE INSURRECTION, which Susan saw last week and immediately asked many of her friends to see. THE INSURRECTION is the first film depiction (that we know of) about the global power struggle that's been waged for generations, and how brainwashing women to hate men and reject marriage (ie, feminism) and normalizing alternative lifestyles is destroying peoples lives. It sounds like a science-fiction plot, but it's not; it's ripped from today's headlines and it's REAL. And when you understand that, you understand why the riots are happening and why the COVID shutdown occurred. After this recording, Kelly saw the film and found the film interesting, but it clearly had a meager budget and not a great movie (as Susan had mentioned in the podcast). As a warning, there are blood splatter scenes that catch you off guard. The script is clunky, and you will need subtitles on. We talk about a LOT of connected things, including the Bolshevik Revolution, and how WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is an easy way to remember the people who are looking to destroy us...
Robert, Rachael and Ben dive into the twisted macabre world of Roald Dahl's family classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. You'll never look at a golden ticket the same way again.
With Spider-Man being Far From Home, we decided to point him in the right direction without our review of Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. A golden ticket, a bizarre candy genius, an imaginative factory, Oompa Loompas that sing? All of that can only mean one thing. We're comparing Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory to Charlie And The Chocolate Factory on this episode or Retro Vs. Remake.
In the third episode of Reel2Recent, we tackle a childhood classic: the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. A magical tale of chocolate and (horrible) children, which version of this Roald Dahl story is more entertaining? With Gene Wilder as the classic Willy Wonka and Johnny Depp in the modern interpretation, which actor carries more weight? Which film has more likable kids? Which Grandpa Joe is more of a jerk? All of these questions will be answered and more!Alongside our namesake, Reel 2 Recent, we also talk about the not-so-latest news. Without spoilers, one of the gang gets pretty mad at some recent revelations.

It’s part two in our series of ‘Ruin Everyone’s Childhood’ series, and this time a beloved children’s movie is on the chopping block! Lots of people have pointed out that it’s pretty weird that Willy Wonka was fine with baking and stretching children in the film ‘Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory’. But few have dared to make the argument that in fact those children weren’t just juiced - they were iced. Heroic podcast producer/comedian and dear friend of the show Rian Kountzhouse stopped by to argue just that. We have a spirited debate about whether Gene Wilder was capable of killing the children, whether the Oompa Loompas are just brainwashed cult members, and of course about the nature of reality. It’s a classic episode!
Craig & Carla welcome special guests Gabe Diani and Etta Devine to discuss Craig's 60th favorite movie, beloved children's classic Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, as well as Freddie Prinze, Jr. Finding Forrester and where the hell this movie is supposed to be set.
You must remember this: a kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh, and nothing is sacred in Hollywood. Even the classic drama CASABLANCA became a short-lived television series (for the second time) courtesy of NBC and the producer of WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY in 1983, starring David Soul (STARSKY AND HUTCH), Hector Elizondo (PRETTY WOMAN) and a young Ray Liotta (GOODFELLAS). Maybe a television prequel to CASABLANCA was a good idea, maybe it wasn't, but was it... CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold take you on a trip back to the 1980s (and the 1940s) to relive the wonders of the original CASABLANCA and not-so-wonders of the tv series, which only lasted five episodes. Was it because they kept remaking the same episode over and over and over and over again? Maybe. Was it because this series makes more sense as a sequel than a prequel? Maybe... What do Steven Spielberg, Henry Selick, James Bond, Nicolas Roeg, Tim Burton, Wes Anderson and Gene Wilder all have in common? Probably not much, but we can tell you all about how they all played in the wheelhouse that Roald Dahl created through his delightful children's books and screenplays (yes, he wrote a couple), many of which helped to warp minds with his playful but twisted visions and stories. Jack and Andrew explore the adaptations of his works, how they compare with one another, as Jack sees Spielberg's new release while Andrew talks about the musical Chitty Chitty, Bang Bang. (and Jack has a rather odd question about a hot tub scene that is in You Only Live Twice... or it may be another movie...) Movies: 1) THE BFG (2016) 2) THE WITCHES (1990) 3) JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH (1996) 4) FANTASTIC MR. FOX (2009) 5) MATILDA (1996) 6) YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (1967) 7) CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (1968) 8) WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (1971) 9) CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (2005) wagesofcinema@gmail.com (songs for fair use purposes via Willy Wonka, Charlie, & Mr. Fox soundtracks).
