We enjoyed a live recording session this last Saturday at La Palapa Mexican restaurant in Austin with our friends and supporters the Northeast Travis County Democrats (or NETCo!) for a deep dive on how environmental issues will interface with the upcoming election - in particular, how the impacts of AI data centers threaten our water, farmland, energy and more - and we also introduce to much of the state a potential data center near the Dog's Head stretch of the Colorado River in East Austin. A Black man watching his Austin neighborhood get priced out from under him. A jazz musical. And a Texas filmmaker who took that story all the way to Tribeca. We sat down with writer and director Alejandro Hendricks at the 2026 Tribeca Film Festival to talk Airport BLVD — a jazz-infused, bittersweet love letter to East Austin and the Black community being erased by the city's transformation.Alejandro gets into what it meant to build this story around the displacement of Black Austinites, how he crafted a full musical on a Lo-Fi budget, what it took to get an independent Texas film into the U.S. Narrative Competition at one of the world's biggest film festivals, and why the stories that hit closest to home are the ones worth going all the way for.Airport BLVD is now in competition in the U.S. Narrative Competition at the 2026 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, presented by OKX. We also dream about how these roots call us to stretch out beautiful branches over the next decade and beyond! [Acts 2] Reflection Questions: How has your time at Vox shaped your spiritual journey? Where do you hope to see Vox's beautiful branches stretch in the coming years? Is there an invitation for you to become more rooted in spiritual community?

Anamaria Gutiérrez is 23 seasons into running Este Garden, a women-powered, one-third-acre urban farm in East Austin growing vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, and fruit and nut trees for four restaurants: Suerte, Este, Bar Toti, and Nixta Taqueria. Her path to the garden ran through a UT Austin business degree, a farmers market coordinator role, a farm fellowship, her own market food business, and a direct pitch to restaurant owners to let her build edible gardens on their properties. In this episode, Tracy talks with Anamaria about what it means to grow culturally significant food for chefs who care — going to pre-shift to discuss seeds and taste-test new harvests, running a volunteer program that passes farming knowledge forward, and keeping urban green space open and accessible to the whole community. They also get into the harder questions: what it takes for women and young farmers to access land, what cooperative models can do for food system resilience, and what event and hospitality professionals genuinely misunderstand about the people who grow their food. Farmers and event pros have more in common than most people think — long days on their feet, weather upending months of planning, needing a village to make it work. This conversation is a reminder that the best food experiences start with knowing who grew what's on the plate.

They discuss the Fifth and Tillery office building in Austin. You can see the project here as you listen along. At the seam between East Austin's quiet neighborhoods and the grit of its industrial past, Fifth + Tillery begins with an act of restraint. Instead of expanding outward, the project turns inward—reclaiming a neglected warehouse and reimagining its bones as a porous, living campus for work and community. Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica is a dystopian horror novel where a virus makes all animal meat poisonous, leading to the legalization and industrialization of human cannibalism! Yes, it's quite a story by Argentine author Bazterrica, but it also does what great horror does so well, that it makes you think about parallels in our real world, and led to an amazing conversation between myself and author Ashley Peters!Author Ashley Peters resides in East Austin, Texas, with her partner, Danny, and their three rescue mutts—Bently, Fredrik, and Bruno. A self-declared bibliophile and lifelong storyteller, she has been crafting tales since childhood, along the way writing for various scholarships and minor publications before fully committing herself to the realm of novel creation. When she is not writing, she can be found immersed in nature, far from the noise of the world—hiking, kayaking, savoring inventive cuisine, or enjoying a matcha latte. At home, her garden and personal library serve as sanctuaries, though she deeply appreciates the artistic and quirky spirit that defines Austin. Having traveled extensively, she credits each place and community with shaping her life in meaningful and lasting ways. While she cannot predict what lies ahead, she embraces each new chapter as an opportunity for adventure, always ready to choose a daring side quest over a mundane path. Our drink is a very dark Blackberry Margarita, and the reason we picked it? Well, I'll let you figure that one out

The Govalle Homestead is a design-build by Drophouse and Russ Design Studio that embraces the adaptive reuse of a 1938 East Austin home, transforming it into a contemporary estate with two structures to accommodate three generations of family. A variance was received for the project, requiring the design to retain the primary structure's original facade, which helped preserve the property's historical character within the community. The interior was reconfigured with an open floor plan and modern amenities tailored to the retired couple's lifestyle.Conversely, the rear dwelling, designed for the younger family unit, presents a distinct architectural contrast to the primary structure, enriching the site's overall complexity. Strategic placement of the residence between two heritage trees maximized spatial efficiency and allowed for adaptable living areas to accommodate future family needs. Both structures exhibit a deliberate connection to the landscape. The primary dwelling features a screened porch, deck, and plunge pool, while the secondary dwelling incorporates a generous covered patio. The interior yard, equipped with an outdoor kitchen and fi replace, connects the two residences, fostering a communal living space suitable for all occasions across generations. The home, which serves as the residence of a Drophouse co-owner, exemplifies the firm's ethos of design experimentation and exploration. It underscores dedication to honoring a property's architectural lineage while enhancing its ongoing evolution. The team included Matt Satter of Drophouse and Mari Russ-Wolf, formerly of Drophouse but now with Russ Design Studio. The team collaborated and built the home while Mari was still with Drophouse. While Drophouse continues to work on custom residential projects, it focuses on its expertise in custom metal fabrication. Mari has since opened her own firm, continuing design work and practicing architecture. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Austin claims to be an environmentally-friendly city — and based on our local tree canopy, that's mostly warranted. But zooming in, it's clear that trees are more dense on the west side than in East Austin. Tree-huggers are paying attention, though, and regularly work to make things better — including by holding the annual Tree of the Year awards (nominations are still open, by the way). Host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by TreeFolks' Executive Director Andrew W. From just 6 employees lending in the 9 Bay Area counties, TMC has grown into the largest CDC in the nation, providing financing for small businesses in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, and Hawaii. Under her visionary leadership, TMC has facilitated over $14 billion in SBA commercial real estate loans for over 7,000 small businesses, leading to the creation of an estimated 60,000 jobs.Recognizing the needs of smaller entrepreneurs, not able to take advantage of the 504 program, Barbara expanded her impact by founding Working Solutions a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), in 1999. This initiative addressed the financing gaps faced by start-ups, women, minorities, and low-income businesses unable to access conventional funding sources. Working Solutions was “incubated” in the TMC office until it grew into self-sufficiency. Today, it is one of the most successful CDFIs in the country. In 2018, repeating the method of incubating another nonprofit, Barbara founded TMC Community Capital (TMC CC), an online, technology-based microlender. Since its inception, TMC Community Capital has disbursed over $7 million to approximately 350 businesses, providing crucial support to under-served entrepreneurs. Notably, 82% of the loans facilitated by TMC CC supported entrepreneurs of color, while 56% benefited women-owned businesses and 75% aided business owners with low-to-moderate income levels.Morrison developed her passion for small business economic development early in her career while serving as deputy director of the Mayor's Office of Economic Development in San Francisco.A former mayor and city council member for the city of Belvedere, Morrison has been widely recognized for her advocacy for women and small business owners, as well as the leadership she provided for many community organizations.Currently, Barbara participates in several influential organizations, including the Oakland Chamber of Commerce and the International Women's Forum (IWF). Her engagement in these organizations reflects her ongoing commitment to fostering economic growth, supporting entrepreneurship and helping local communities grow and thrive.About GlobeSt. Women of Influence: The Women of Influence Conference is an exclusive two-day event that celebrates the women who drive the commercial real estate industry forward. With his phenomenal new book, A NATURAL HISTORY OF EMPTY LOTS: Field Notes from Urban Edgelands, Back Alleys and Other Wild Places (Timber Press), Christopher Brown shifts from novels into nature-writing/memoir/nonfiction mode and I am HERE for it. We talk about the eco-cosmos of East Austin, TX, the years of observation that opened him to the hidden pockets of wildness in urban environments, why solitude in nature is a myth, what we have to gain from taking a long walk, Long Time vs. the short presence of Anglos in Texas, how 2020's lockdown turned off global capitalism and showed how society might truly change, and how this book mutated from when we talked about it at Readercon 2023. We get into Bruce Sterling's unforgettable critique of his writing, the process of turning a narrative of colonization into one of decolonization, (eco)psychogeography & the Situationists, why he (begrudgingly) brought the personal/memoiristic into the book and how it helped him come to terms with himself, and what a workshop with horror writers taught him about the truth-telling power of non-redemptive storytelling. We also discuss the design flaws of the agricultural revolution, how his readers in different regions respond to his FIELD NOTES newsletter, the nature of mysticism and writing a narrative about transcending the self, hiking a Massachusetts marsh in summer with Jeff VanderMeer, and plenty more. In the span of three months in 1976, three young East Austin women vanished. With seemingly no clues left behind, the Austin Police were baffled, however, it's unclear if they were investigating the first two cases from the get-go, those of Brenda Jean Moore and Jennifer Joyce Barton. They certainly were not utilizing the media – a vital tool in any missing persons case; it took a year for Jennifer to get a highly sensationalized article about her disappearance and Brenda never once made the newspaper. Police went to the media for Debra Kay Stewart's missing person's case about a week after she disappeared, perhaps too late to be effective. If you have any information about the disappearances of Brenda Jean Moore, Jennifer Joyce Barton, or Debra Kay Stewart, please contact the Texas Department of Public Safety's Missing Persons Clearinghouse at (800) 346-3243 or the Austin Police Department at (512) 974-5250.You can support Gone Cold – Texas True Crime and listen to the show ad-free at patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. In May of 1983, 35-year-old Esther Broberg was dropped off by her husband at an after hours drinking joint in East Austin, Texas. There, she hung out with her close friend and some others. Just as the sun threatened to rise, the group parted ways. But Esther never made it home. Instead, just a few hours later, passersby at EH Givens Park, not far from where she'd been, discovered Esther Broberg's body. The scene was shocking; the violence acted out on the mother of two was unfathomable. Unforgivable. The Austin Police quickly developed suspects in the case, and a series of confessions, but there could be no trial. Even after one of the suspect's DNA matched evidence found on Esther's body a couple decades later, the same roadblocks remained. If you have any information about the abduction, rape, and murder of Esther Gevara Broberg, please call the Austin Police Department Homicide Tip line at 512-477-3588. The APD Cold Case Unit can also be contacted by e-mail at APDColdCaseMissingPersons@austintexas.gov.
