Lauren and Rocky open up the conversation talking about what success means in business. Most business comes down to math, and simple math at that. If you sit down before starting a business and do the math, you should have an idea about whether the business can be successful. The conversation takes a turn towards cash washes, which Lauren welcomes. Is this really becoming as oversaturated as it seems? Lauren then asks Rocky to demystify and differentiate “money” in business: revenue, profit, cash. A huge key to understand here is that you can have a profitable business that runs out of cash. This occurs when you try to grow too fast. Not enough business owners understand this! Rocky also points out that you should be aware of some initial success, and that it won't necessarily continue. He also recommends using conservative numbers when “underwriting” your business plan. Lauren then asks Rocky about buying a business. Is that easier than creating one? You should take into account how much involvement the owner has, the client number and mix, and more. At college, he was buying and selling stuff until he secured a real-estate licence to sell properties. Show Notes: Mike Michalowicz is the author of Profit First Mike realized we have the wrong equation for profit. We look at the top line given by the accountants. Mike created a cash flow system that works for business owners. It help people figure out what's going on in their business without opening up their accounting books. Sometimes the accountant says you were profitable but you don't see the money. You may be profitable but not have the cash to pay the tax bill. With the Profit First system you take every dollar that comes into the business and you give it a job. You put your money in separate accounts. You go to your tax account to pay your tax bill. When you want use your profits, you go to the account that has your profit in it and you can actually see it. Parkinson's law says that a business will use all the time and money allocated to it. The 80:20 rule says 20% of what you do creates 80% of the results. Also, 40% of what you do creates 96% of the results. So that means 60% of what you are doing is useless. You need to think about what you are doing and what you should not do. If you are grinding you are not being efficient. Islands of Profit in a Sea of Red Ink: Why 40 Percent of Your Business Is Unprofitable and How to Fix It by Jonathan Byrnes — He says 20-30 % of what a company does makes over 100 % of the profit, 30-40% loses money and the rest breaks even. Are you setting your course, are you taking that first step?   My guest on the show is an example of someone living a good life by design a man who came from humble beginnings.   Rocky Lalvani was born in India, when he was two years old, the family emigrated to the US, and while it was a great opportunity, the family had to start at the bottom.  It was a tough beginning, but they worked hard as immigrant families do, the American dream inspired them, and they built their wealth. By mass balance, I'm talking about how much water is going into a steam boiler system compared to how much is going out. The two should be equal. What should be included, though? It depends upon where you draw your circle around the system. A typical circle may only include makeup and condensate return going in with steam and blowdown going out. But what about the water demands of pretreatment equipment? Drawing the circle a little bigger may also include softener regeneration wastewater, reverse osmosis reject, raw makeup, lost condensate, steam leaks, leaking feedwater pumps, and more. We often hear data on how much bad hire costs you and your company. About 3x the person's annual salary. But how much did the interview process itself cost? For a startup to make a hire, the company spends about 73 total hours interviewing. With the most significant cost being 30 hours of the production team's combined time. I'm going to say this outright even though know it'll raise a few eyebrows: Money matters. Coming from a country where the differences between the 'Haves' and the 'Have Nots' were so obvious, I was very well acquainted with the importance of setting yourself up for a proper financial future.
