Values undergird everything we do as coaches. But like many broad themes, the temptation is to talk about values in a theoretical or philosophical way without understanding how they play out in everyday life. In today's podcast, Chris McCluskey is going to use the Professional Christian Coaching Institute as a case study, so you can put real meat on the bones of this critical concept. In this episode, you'll get a backhand-the-scenes to peek at: • How key values are identified and chosen • The importance of weaving core values into every area of life and business • Operationalizing values on a daily basis • Getting and keeping the buy-in of the entire team

If you’re tempted to give up on something, tune in to this episode first! This inspirational message is all about how not to throw in the towel, even when you feel ready to admit defeat. We all get tired along the way, and want to give up at times, but I’m here to help you keep on keeping on with what God told you to do. Of course, there are some things that we need to quit, but you shouldn’t give up on your divine purpose. Your best days are still ahead of you, and the most amazing moments in your past were just a warm-up for what’s still to come! Today I’ll give you three powerful ways not to throw in the towel, even when the road feels rough. First, assess the situation and figure out why you’re doing what you’re doing. Is there anything you need to do differently, or that you’re doing because of a request rather than because your heart is in it? Know that not every good thing is a God thing. This means that not every opportunity that comes your way is something you need to say “yes” to. Instead, you need to find out if any given opportunity is in alignment with your goals, priorities, and purpose. Next, remember why you got started along this path. Holding on to your “why” can provide the motivation that you need to stay strong. When you lose your “why,” you can lose your way. Finally, get help! If you’re in that messy middle part of your path, and more opportunities are coming your way than you know what to do with, get help by hiring someone to take some of the load off of you. Instead of throwing in the towel, let someone else take some things off your plate to free up your bandwidth for what you really need to do! In This Episode: [00:45] - Welcome to episode 26! Today, Jevonnah will encourage you not to throw in the towel. [03:32] - Jevonnah offers listeners a powerful way not to throw in the towel, even when it may seem hard to keep going. [05:51] - The second tip Jevonnah is offering listeners today is to remember why you got started. [06:23] - Jevonnah shares her third tip: get help! [07:08] - We hear words of encouragement not to throw in the towel. [08:12] - Jevonnah asks listeners to make room in their lives for the things that truly matter by cutting away the fluff. [09:41] - Don’t throw in the towel, Jevonnah entreats, and gives a shout-out to her friend Chris McCluskey of Professional Christian Coaching Institute. [11:08] - Take some time for yourself this week to follow the three steps that Jevonnah has explored today. Today we have the privilege of sitting down with our show’s host, Christopher McCluskey, to hear his story as he has dared to answer the song of his heart, a song placed there by God. Raised in a healthy Christian family, Chris was blessed beyond measure, but that didn’t mean his path would be without countless challenges and overwhelming obstacles to answering God’s call on his life—a call that has not only touched his professional and personal life but also the lives of thousands. Chris’s story offers important life lessons we could all learn from: The importance of honoring the song God has placed in your heart Choosing to persevere in the face of adversity Committing to running and finishing the race God has set before you Sacrificing short-term pleasures for long-term gains How a supportive family or community help us weather life’s storms And more… Be sure to tune in for part two of Chris’ story next week and learn how the worst—and the best—was yet to come. Until then, keep Raising the Standard and Changing the World! Chris McCluskey is a visionary thought leader frequently cited as "The Father of Christian Coaching." His ability to niche down and create a lifestyle business and movement has made him stand out in business and in life. In today's episode, he joins Jesse Cole to discuss how it's possible to go all-in on family and creating the lifestyle of your dreams. "The real learning of anything starts when you begin doing it." - Chris McCluskey Chris McCluskey - Training Coaches from Home Chris operates the largest Christian training school in the world, Professional Christian Coaching Institute with his wife. The school is a completely virtual community that offers college and graduate-level training. This has allowed Chris and Rachel to work from the comfort of their ranch in the foothills of Ozark Mountains. The training is tailored for people who wish to enter the coaching profession either part-time or full-time. Whether it's life coaching, leadership coaching, or executive coaching, anyone who wants to acquire the skill sets of a professional coach can be part of the school. And with the traditional requirements of a physical institution done away it, students are evaluated based on their performance in the marketplace. A Choice Between Career and Family Career is important to fend for the people you love, and so is spending time with family. Chris came home to his family one night, saw what a rough day it has been for them, and realized how much he'd missed. This was the moment he paused to reconsider the limited career choices his education has presented to him. "We are very much trained not to be entrepreneurs but instead to be employees." - Chris McCluskey He chose to do away with that and make a career that will allow him to be home for his family. Desires of the Heart We all have our life questions, but it's counterproductive to dwell on trying to come up with answers that only the future holds. In order to realize one's true potential, it is more important to focus on what we want in life, on that vision that we have of ourselves several years down the road. And only then can we can start working for that goal. "I can't see what the future's gonna be. What I can discern, if I'll be willing to listen long enough, is the desires of my heart." - Chris McCluskey Final Four 1. What have you done to stand out in business and in life? "At night when I lie down I do less gauging, 'What did I do, what did I accomplish?' and more about, 'Who was I?' I check myself on that 'being.'" 2. Additional advice you'd give someone to stand out in business and in life. "Don't miss the central piece of your purpose, your calling. Get clear on why are you here." 3. Best advice you've ever received. "In the end if a business fails, it's ultimately not because it wasn't a viable business. It will have failed because your systems failed." 4. How do you want to be remembered? "I wanna be remembered as a man who knew why he was here, and he lived fully into that purpose." If you're going through a rough patch right now, you may wonder how you can go about finding faith and energy when you're just a shell of who you once were. My guest today knows about finding faith – in business, in God, and in yourself – when it seems like there shouldn't be any faith or energy left. People often refer to Christopher McCluskey as “the father of Christian coaching.” With that unofficial title, you might wonder how it could be hard for him to find faith and energy. But make no mistake – he's struggled. Chris has a background in psychotherapy, but decided to leave the profession. Partly because, like a lot of psychotherapists, he started to feel shell-shocked by spending so much time on other people's battlefields. Just like pro sports takes a toll on athletes' bodies, psychotherapy takes a toll on therapists' minds. So even though he loved what he did, he moved to the country with his family, started working from home, and started finding faith in his new direction. That's when everything changed. Christopher had a medical condition so severe he couldn't even hold his wife's hand. He had to live in the dark. He used a walker to get around. All this while homeschooling his seven children, getting his new business running, and otherwise adjusting to a new lifestyle. It took five years to even diagnose his disease. His family called those “the dark years,” while Chris “lived as a ghost.” At some point, this Christian coach even felt like God had abandoned him while he waited at death's doorstep for 18 months. He clung to the promise that God is good, even when he could no longer feel God's presence. And somehow, he kept his faith during that awful experience. “God forced me on every plane to come to the end of myself and recognize I bring little to any situation, even when I think I'm banging on all cylinders,” he says. So finding faith and energy when it seems a lost cause is something he had to learn. “See what you have to work with, adapt, and just step back in and persevere.” Chris McCluskey via @RustyLionAcad (Tweet this!)
