Professor Carl Jones is a conservation biologist who is best known for saving the Mauritius kestrel from extinction. He is the scientific director of Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, chief scientist at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and an honorary professor in ecology and conservation biology at the University of East Anglia. He was born in Carmarthen in Wales and was fascinated with animals from an early age, rearing rescued common kestrels, owls and hawks in his back garden. He studied biology at North-East London Polytechnic and, after learning about the plight of the Mauritius kestrel, he was determined to go out to the country to try to save the bird.He arrived in Mauritius in 1979 when there were only two known breeding pairs left in the wild. By the time he left in 1999 he'd established a captive breeding programme and today hundreds of Mauritius kestrels fly over the islands where he spent decades pioneering his, sometimes controversial, methods. Today the Mauritius kestrel is the national bird. He is also responsible for saving from extinction three species of reptiles, a fruit bat and several plants. He was appointed an MBE for his work in 2004 and in 2016 he won the prestigious Indianapolis Prize – the world's leading award for animal conservation.Carl lives in Carmarthen with his wife and two children and assorted animals including two Andean condors called Carlos and Baby. The Right Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin, the Bishop of Dover, is a trailblazer, who has been right at the heart of a changing nation for over 40 years. Despite discrimination due to her gender and ethnic minority background, Bishop Rose has never wavered from the call she received to enter ministry at the age of 14. She joined Nuala McGovern to discuss her memoir, The Girl from Montego Bay.A Royal College of Nursing report, On the Frontline of the UK's Corridor Care Crisis, which came out this week, found that the situation in A&E is the worst it has ever been and that a lack of hospital beds means corridor care has been "normalised". One nurse described caring for a 95-year-old woman dying with dementia who had spent eight hours lying on a trolley in a crowded corridor next to a drunk person who was vomiting and being abusive. Others describe women having a miscarriage in side rooms. Professor Nicola Ranger, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing joined Anita Rani to discuss what is going on.Holly Bourne, bestselling author of How Do You Like Me Now? and the Spinster Club series, is back with So Thrilled For You, her most personal novel yet. It's a story about four friends navigating motherhood, career ambition, and societal pressures, all unfolding during a sweltering summer's day at a baby shower. Holly joined Nuala and explained what inspired this book. Can AI improve the success rates of women undergoing fertility treatment? Anita discusses the impact of AI on IVF with Dr Cristina Hickman, an embryologist, co-founder of Avenues, and Chair of the Global AI Fertility Society, and Dr Ali Abbara, a Clinician Scientist at Imperial College London, and Consultant in Reproductive Endocrinology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.Hermine Braunsteiner was the first person to be extradited from the US for Nazi war crimes. She was one of a few thousand women who had worked as a concentration camp guard and was nicknamed ‘the Mare' by prisoners because of her cruelty; she kicked people to death. In 1964, Hermine's past was unknown: She was living a quiet existence as an adoring suburban housewife in Queens, New York when she was tracked down by a reporter from The New York Times who exposed her past. Angharad Hampshire, a Research Fellow at York St John University, joined Nuala to talk about The Mare, her novel based on Hermine's life. The all-female, Welsh-language, post-punk trio Adwaith are the only band to have won the Welsh Music Prize twice, for their first two albums. They are about to release their third album, Solas, all about returning to their hometown in Carmarthen. Band members Hollie Singer, Gwenedd Owen and Gwen Anthony performed live in the studio. To discuss the new guidance and its potential impact Anita Rani is joined by Lindsey Fussell, OFCOM's interim group director for online safety. Kamala Harris made history as the first woman - and first woman of colour - to become Vice President of the United States of America. She rose higher in the country's leadership than any other woman before her. Anita discusses her legacy and future with BBC News Online Editor, Courtney Subramanian; and co-founder of Higher Heights, an organisation that works to mobilise black women voters, Kimberly Peeler-Allen. What might be next for the woman who could have been the first female president?A Royal College of Nursing report, On the Frontline of the UK's Corridor Care Crisis, out today, finds that the situation in A&E is the worst it has ever been and that a lack of hospital beds means corridor care has been "normalised". In this episode we will look at one of English literature's greatest names, the Romantic Poet, Lord Byron. It is claimed outside of the U.K. he is the second most read British author behind Shakespeare. We first mentioned Byron in our second episode, Science Fiction Satan, where we quoted contemporary poet Robert Southey who dubbed Byron and his good friend Percy Shelley as ‘The Satanic School'. Southey claimed their work was, ‘characterised by a Satanic spirit of pride and audacious impiety.'Add to Southey's glowing endorsement, there is of course the more famous quote about Byron from Lady Caroline Lamb who called him, ‘Mad, bad and dangerous to know.'Then there's his work, poems and plays about the apocalypse, angels of death, vampires, defying the gods, a tribute to Dante's inferno, Lucifer and St Peter litigating over a King of England at the very gates of Heaven, an ode to Napoleon, likening him to our favourite disrupter, the witch of Endor from first Samuel, the devil's drive or the story of Cain told from the point of view of murderous Cain himself. After all of that, how could I resist doing an episode about this man? There are cameo guest appearances by The Young and the Restless, Forrest Gump, Joel Olsteen, Alexander the Great, William the Conqueror, John ‘Foul Weather Jack' Byron, Don Juan, Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, John ‘Captain Mad Jack' Byron, Marchioness of Carmarthen, Amelia Osborne, Catherine Gordon, George Gordon Byron, William Chaworth, Harrow Vs Eton Cricket match, Trinity College at Cambridge, William Fletcher, Hellespont, Greece, Dardanelles, Swimming World Magazine, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Clara Claremont, Mary Shelley, Percy Shelley, Switzerland, Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus, Elvis, John Polidore, The Vampire, Bram Stoker, Dracula, John Milton, Darth Vader, Wolverine, The Phantom of the Opera, Venice, Ottomans, Thomas Moore, #SketchComedy #Sketch #Comedy #Sketch Comedy #Atheist #Science #History #Atheism #ConspiracyTheory #Sceptical #Scepticism #Mythology #Religion #Devil #Satan #Skeptic #Debunk #poetry

This weekend the Right Reverend Dorrien Davies has been enthroned as the 130th Bishop of St Davids in a cathedral which is the mother church of a large diocese covering the west Wales counties of Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion. It's a part of Wales that Bishop Dorrien knows well – having studied at Lampeter, served as a curate in Llanelli and subsequently as parish priest in Llanfihangel Ystrad Aeron and at St Dogmaels before being made a Residentiary Canon at St Davids Cathedral in 2010. Five years ago he was appointed to a senior role as Archdeacon of Carmarthen; he's well-known and popular in the diocese. He succeeds the Rt Revd Joanna Penberthy who retired last year following a lengthy period of sick leave. Her time in office wasn't without controversy following a tweet for which she subsequently apologised in which she said “Never, never, never trust a Tory.” Bishop Dorrien was born and brought up in Abergwili near Carmarthen which is also where Llys Esgob – the Bishop's Palace – is situated. That's where Jonathan Thomas recorded a conversation earlier this week, covering a wide-range of topics and issues including climate change, historic churches, the management of differing opinions over same-sex blessings and the role of the Church in an election year. He also recalls growing up in the shadow of the Bishop's Palace in Abergwili, and his consecration service as a bishop in Bangor Cathedral last weekend.

Hablaremos de: Esta es la base secreta militar "Objeto 17", y el "hotel" es sólo un disfraz. Nunca tuvo la intención de funcionar como hotel. Todavía está custodiado por militares, pero lo que hay debajo... nadie lo sabe. No preguntes, ¡nadie te dirá nada! Profetisa BabaVanga. Berry growers are warning that what they say is a lack of support from retailers will mean fewer British strawberries, raspberries and blueberries next year. Growers say that while prices for consumers have risen they're being paid the same, despite increases in the cost of production. They warn some will chose not to grow in the future. In many agricultural communities in Wales the first language is Welsh, in fact more than double the number of people in farming speak Welsh compared to the population as a whole. We visit Carmarthen livestock market to hear about the importance of the Welsh language for rural communities. The UK's last ammonia plant is to close permanently; CF Industries says it 'will not be cost competitive for the long term'. The company plans to continue to import ammonia to make fertiliser at Billingham but 38 jobs are at risk. Ammonia is a key ingredient in nitrate fertilisers; in 2021 the National Farmers Union says British farmers used just over 3.5 million tonnes of fertiliser. It's described the closure as 'concerning' and called on the Government to look at how relying on imported ammonia could impact food security. In recent years Whitby has become a major fishing port for lobster, putting pressure on numbers. Now the Whitby Lobster Hatchery aims to release hundreds of thousands of juvenile lobsters back into the seas, to restore the ecological balance. The ‘Hometown Triumvirate' is a rare occurrence in the world of radio. A collector's item, some might say. Well today, completists got their wish, with Carmarthen, Bristol and ‘the north' being the respective locations of Elis, John and Producer Dave, as the BBC's world-beating broadcasting infrastructure was pushed to its very limits, all in the name of cross country content. Ethernets, modems, ISDN lines and the internet (general) all played their part as features old and new were rolled out. Episode 2 of new audio drama DI Robbyns once again left listeners on the edge of their seats, the lightboards switched up as our fleet-footed hosts juggled a plethora of text topics, plus the dulcet tones of Adrian Chiles made for an unforgettable Made Up Game. This week sees the Coronation of King Charles III. Whilst the Coronation service itself is rooted in ancient Christian traditions and symbols, it breaks new ground, with a ‘faith procession' of eight non-Christian clerics leading the way into Westminster Abbey, the presentation of ceremonial regalia involving Sikh, Hindu, Muslim and Jewish peers; Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, a practising Hindu, reading from the Bible; the blessing shared by leaders of different Christian denominations; and the King being greeted by non-Christian faith leaders. As Prince of Wales, King Charles once said he would prefer to become ‘Defender of Faith' rather than ‘Defender of the Faith'. However, the King's oaths, central to the service, remain unchanged, including the promise to maintain ‘the Protestant Reformed Religion' as Supreme Governor of the Church of England. The oaths are, however, contextualised by the Archbishop of Canterbury, to illustrate the King's commitment to the multi-faith and diverse landscape in Britain. But what exactly does this centuries old title of ‘Fidei Defensor', ‘Defender of the faith', mean in practical terms at the dawn of King Charles' reign? What of the bigger picture - does it apply to us in Wales? Do we need one? And what of the place of other faiths? To discuss these issues, Rosa Hunt is joined by: The Very Rev Dr Sarah Rowland Jones, Dean of St Davids; Alun Lenny, councillor, former mayor of Carmarthen and a non conformist lay preacher with the Annibynwyr Catherine Pepinster, a journalist specialising in religious affairs, and author of 'Defenders of the Faith, the British Monarchy, Religion and the Coronation'; And Akhandadhi Das, A Vaishnava Hindu teacher and theologian
