The V/H/S found footage film franchise has been a huge success. Cheap to make, bringing in established and up-and-coming talent, both behind the camera and on the pen, the series has made a ton of money and brought us some solid found footage in an anthology format. The latest in the franchise is V/H/S BEYOND (2024) which links together shorts mostly based upon visitors from another planet. From IMDB: Six bloodcurdling tapes unleash horror in a sci-fi inspired hellscape, pushing the boundaries of fear and suspense. The talent behind the camera includes Jordan Downey, Jay Cheel, Virat Pal, Justin Martinez, Kate Siegel, and Justin and Christian Long. The film was one of the highest rated in the franchise by critics, and received a release in September 2024 on the streaming service Shudder. Your co-hosts take a look at this film and give their thoughts.

We recorded this a month ago but then I had to go to a bunch of midwestern noise shows and meet Jennifer in New Mexico to go to the Lightning Field. But now I'm back and I've edited part two in Jennifer's living room. Today we have part two of our talk with Jennifer's friend from her days at Uproxx, Christian. Today we mostly move away from his writing and begin with the conclusion of his story sort of meeting Neil Young, talk about his miniatures and their growing fanbase on instagram, and his incredibly improbable ex, Alex Jone's current wife. You can read some of Christian's old writing at Uproxx on their website, or you can check out his main post-pandemic passion, Star Wars miniatures, on his instagram. Also, as usual, the intro and outro music is still provided by Tripp Nasty.
We recorded this a month ago but then I had to go to a bunch of midwestern noise shows and meet Jennifer in New Mexico to go to the Lightning Field. But now I'm back and this is edited and... it's online as soon as I hit the purple or mauve button on the right side of my screen. Today we talked to Jennifer's friend from her days at Uproxx, Christian . He's mostly out of the game, favoring work with a local animal shelter over buying in-air wifi to urgently file a story for $30, but he's been left with a number of exhausting and hilarious stories about half-assed press tours, stealing food, editing local news, getting big timed by Jake Busey, and a story about a curmudgeonly Neil Young we're saving for next week. We also ramble on as usual, this time about horror movie hosts, streaming services, and weirdo hipster eugenicists. You can read some of Christian's old writing at Uproxx on their website, or you can check out his main post-pandemic passion, Star Wars miniatures, on his instagram. Also, as usual, the intro and outro music is still provided by Tripp Nasty.

Tune in for a discussion about two great movies with three great guests - some of whom are actors who have now moved behind the camera! In this episode, we talk about... Why Justin Chon decided to star in his movie, even though he didn't initially set out to. How Justin Chon creates a safe and open environment on set, how he works with his DPs, and other insights into his process. How Justin Chon chose and secured his co-star. The challenges of working with children. How Justin Chon went about researching the issue at the crux of Blue Bayou. How Lady of the Manor came about and how Christian and Justin created its “odd couple” style comedy. The similarities to the play Blithe Spirit and how the writers just may have been inspired by it! #Actor / Director #JustinLong joins his brother #Director #ChristianLong to discuss their new film #LadyoftheManor starring #JudyGreer and #MelanieLynskey.
The feature comedy is about an aimless ne'er-do-well who becomes a tour guide in a historic estate and winds up befriending the manor's resident ghost. Co-writers, directors and brothers Justin and Christian Long talk to Write On about collaboration. Christian says: "We happen to agree a lot creatively, so there's usually not a lot of conflict. We definitely have different approaches as people in that Justin… has a really big personality. I'm a little more reserved, a little more shy, so it takes me a minute to open up to people." Justin talks about how writing the movie helped reconnect him with his brother: "I was working in London and kind of lonely, it was kind of a lonely job… [collaborating on the script with Christian] was a way to feel like I was back with my brother, and it was an easy way to bond from a distance, and it always made me laugh to get these scenes from him, and then he would get my scenes, and he'd punch them up and make them better, and I would try to make his better, and that's kind of how we worked." Q&A with co-writers and directors Justin Long and Christian Long. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. An aimless ne'er-do-well becomes a tour guide in a historic estate and winds up befriending the manor's resident ghost.
"We were thinking about a comedic version of Psycho,” said Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard, Dodgeball), about his latest project, Lady of the Manor, which he co-wrote and co-directed with his brother, Christian Long (Hop, Accepted). This idea morphed into more of a buddy comedy, involving a ne'er-do-well played by Melanie Lynskey and the ghost of a mansion, played by Judy Greer. The two meet when Lynskey's character ends up working as a tour guide in the historic estate Greer's character haunts. The brothers were inspired by movies like What About Bob? and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and wanted to put a spin on the buddy comedy, the obnoxious character being a modern pot-head ne'er-do-well and the straight man being a proper woman from the 1870s. In addition to Melanie Lynskey and Judy Greer, the comedy also features Ryan Phillippe, Patrick Duffy, Angela Alise, Luis Guzmán, and Justin Long stars in a supporting role as Max. In this interview, the brothers talk their love of the Marx Brothers, why comedies need to be specific in their humor, how to ground heightened stories, and why Judy Greer referred to the movie as a “fart-warming comedy.” If it's your first time listening, make sure to subscribe and visit my new website for information on the YouTube channel, the blog, this podcast, and my new book ‘Ink by the Barrel' which takes advice from these 200+ interviews at the link below… Follow us on Instagram: @creativeprinciples If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? Work to proactively shape the culture around you! Be a thermostat. Not a thermometer. Guest Jason Barger; a dynamic keynote speaker, storyteller, established author and fellow podcaster; joins us to talk about CULTURE. Every human being is part of a group of some kind. Why do some groups/organizations succeed and others merely maintain? Those that thrive are proactively shaping the culture around them. They are “thermostats”. Not “thermometers”. Want to know more? Check out our podcast! 1:40 – About Jason. – For 10 years Jason led 1,700+ people to build 125 houses internationally for families living in poverty. He’s also received numerous recognitions including the “Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things” award. 2:38 – Overview of Jason’s best selling book “Thermostate Cultures”. – Be intentional about the culture you are currently experiencing, but also about what the culture is that you proactively want. 4:01 – “Thermometer Thinking” – Leaders with this type of thinking create a culture like a thermometer – reactionary to external conditions. This happens when there isn’t clarity around what you do or how you are committed to doing it. 4:50 – “Thermostate Mode” – Leaders with this mentality set the temperature (culture) and align their teams/organizations to intentionally keep it there; both in what they do and how they do it. 6:24 – Culture is your competitive advantage. – Lots of companies can do what you do, but HOW you do it is your differentiator. Be proactive and set your culture. 6:50 – Are you a “thermometer” or a “thermostat”? – Look at your team. If there is a disconnect between what they say and what they do, then you’re not in alignment with your culture and need to recalibrate. 10:53 – Change theory and the 6 A’s. – Now for the big question. How do we go from what we are today to what we want to be tomorrow? Learn the 6 A’s – assess, align, aspire, articulate, action, anchor. 13:25 – It’s not a drive-thru experience. – Developing people and culture isn’t a drive-thru experience. It takes time. Think years down the road and be committed to ongoing development. 16:40 – Employee retention. – People want to be part of something bigger than themselves – they want to be part of a culture. 21:30 Connect with Jason JasonVBarger.comFollow on social media @JasonVBarge Listen to his podcast – The Thermostat GUEST BIO: Jason Barger is committed to engaging the minds and hearts of people in order to strengthen leadership, culture, and clarity of mission, vision & values. Christian Long's essay was published in the Fall 2020 issue of Ed Magazine "Pivot." Pivot Out Loud is a special audio series produced by the Harvard Graduate School of Education to accompany the magazine.
At first glance, you might wonder why Christian Long, a man with multiple fathers, would be featured in a series on fatherlessness. Good question. It’s true that Christian has a biological father, but he was out of the picture before Christian was three years old and only emerged again when Christian was 25. Christian also had three stepfathers (and three different last names.) Thanks to his wife, he has a father-in-law… So there is no shortage of fathers in his life. What’s missing, though, was a dad – a safe, constant male figure in his life. The story of Christian’s father-void is still not over. At age 50, he’s still processing how his experience of fatherlessness has affected his temperament, his fears, and his relationships – especially his relationship with his own children. As he reflects, a deep, raw honesty emerges. It’s real. It’s is a place of acceptance. And it’s hopeful. OUR STORY Hey there, welcome to Season 3 of Belly of the Beast Life Stories. I’m David All. It’s another season of life here at the podcast. This third season is a very rare collection of stories by men who share the golden thread of growing up with an absent biological father and broke the pattern to be a good man. I’ll be sharing my own Belly story later this season. And let me tell you that a year ago, when we launched this show, I didn’t realize this was my Belly story. Wisdom for our Soul -- Courage for your Journey. Extraordinary life stories illustrate the nature of personal transformation. A change that forced us down into the dark, gooey stage of life where we found our purpose and climbed up a new person. EPISODE SUMMARY Part I - Christian reflects on having multiple fathers -- stepfathers and a biological father –- yet he had a dad-void. - Christian’s childhood memories of his biological father are so few, whatever in-person memories exist happened at or before the age of two. - Christian’s first stepfather insisted on adopting him. Years later, Christian realized the adoption was not based on love for him as a child; it was nothing more than a negotiation, a poker move of sorts. - Once a year, Christian visited his paternal grandparents, and once while he was there, he spoke with his father on the phone, though at the time, he didn’t know who he was. - Anger, often suppressed or masquerading as sarcasm, has been a constant companion of Christian’s. - The threat of violence from his stepfather left Christian on edge, scared, and looking for outlets away from home. - Christian describes a difficult time in his marriage when he moved out for a couple of months and how the responsibility he felt as a father helped pull him back home. Part II - Christian shares why he believes his children are what held his marriage together through a rocky time. - Christian reflects on the lines of a poem he wrote for his daughter, Berkeley. - Christian articulates why feeling love is so difficult. - Christian describes the work of healing from being fatherless. - Christian describes his online community of men who choose to be honest and vulnerable with one another. Part III - In some ways, Christina feels like he’s just beginning -- just beginning to discover himself, to feel. It’s never too late to start. QUOTABLES “The first thing that Christian said to me about his story was that it might not be a good fit for this season, because he still feels the deep wound of fatherlessness.” “The idea of thinking of who was my dad in an intimate, emotional, close way is a moving target for me.” “I was in a constant state of discomfort and also trying to protect my mother but doing it through sarcasm or one-liners.” “While I didn't take that violence out on people I cared about, that violence becomes passive but just as detrimental in other ways.” “My kids were my salvation. When I wasn't sure about me and I wasn't sure about my career, my skills, I wasn't sure about my marriage, whether I was lovable or could love in return, my kids, even at a young age, were my salvation.” “if there hadn't been kids, I don't think there would have been a way back. I don't think, for my wife, I would have been enough to bring back, and I don't think I would have felt there was a place to go back to.” “What I felt deep, deep, deep is that those kids were the way back, that my wife and I, our relationship was possible because those kids would bring us back together as a family.” “It was like I didn't know how to exist until they arrived.” “I have spent a lot of my life assuming and feeling that the people that I was meant to love or I was meant to feel their love were going to disappear.” “I look at the kids and I'm still in awe that my daughter really deeply loves me. And I'm still super intimidated and feel a pain, like a breaking, when my son doesn't need his dad.” “That just to be in a space where good human beings will talk deeply about what guides them and what they're challenged by... It's also just a helluva lot less lonely. You're not stuck in your lane. So I keep showing up. I keep welcoming them back.” “This is the moment. The past story doesn't have to be the next story.” “Identity, I think it's out in front of me. It's time to go lay claim. It's time to feel good. It's time to say this is the life that was meant to happen.” LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST - Founder / Host of the "Oh, Sh*t" Sessions: a virtual gathering of 'good men' from around the world who come together each month to explore the "Oh, Sh*t" moments in their life -- now and in the past -- as well as to define the ways they are seeking to make a purposeful impact in their future. Episode 51 - Take 2 - CAIS Heads and Chairs Conference - Christian Long - Wonder: A Design Studio by Jason B. Rogers
Christian Long is an educator, designer, school planner, technology expert, educational futurist, and passionate advocate for innovative learning communities. He currently operates The Wonder Project, a design thinking studio that helps schools design at the intersection of their mission and their moonshot. I’ve known Christian now for almost a decade and I learn something every time I have the opportunity to chat with him. He’s definitely a “breaker” and I think you will learn many things from this conversation. Visit breakersociety.com and follow us on Twitter @BreakerSociety. In this very first episode, Dr. G is joined by Christian Long, a pioneer and advocate for re-imagining the role of education for our future generations. Having spent much of his life as an educator, Christian has now linked up with his architectural peers to re-design learning communities that are built around wonder, curiosity, and collaboration. He shares with us how we need to rethink our approach to learning, and how physical space plays a critical role in creating optimal learning environments. How do we evolve past century old traditions and rituals? What is the future value of a degree? What role does technology play in the education of our kids? How can space be designed to encourage wonder and curiosity? We discuss these and much more in our conversation. Now, That’s Unusual. About Christian Long: Christian Long, Ed.M. is the co-founder of WONDER, By Design, the “multidisciplinary design studio that is unapologetically curious about the future of learning.” In addition to a career in the school design industry, he spent 15 years as an educator, coach and experiential education leader in the US and Japan. An advocate for innovative learning communities, Long is a frequent speaker at a number of TEDx events and regularly delivers keynotes on the future of learning all over the world. He holds a master’s degree in education from Harvard and a bachelor’s degree in English from Indiana University. A novice farmer, Long resides on ten acres in Ohio with his wife Karla and their two children. Key Interview Takeaways: In the last twenty years, a shift has occurred in the way we view education. The two key components of this shift include: Technology – With profound advancements in the digital tools available, there are opportunities for customization that did not exist prior to this radical transformation of our environment. Teacher Worth – In the last ten-plus years, nearly everyone has become invested in the topic of education and considers themselves an expert. At the same time, career educators have been assigned less and less value. With this “tectonic shift,” the question becomes: Who is going to opt into the profession while society continues to degrade the role? Innovation is difficult when we are unwilling to let go of the rituals and traditions (i.e.: an agrarian calendar, comprehensive programming) we have embraced for a century. At the same time, if we abandon everything that school has been in favor of a corporate model, we run the risk of losing the potential for community (relationships among teachers, students and their families) that makes our educational system a powerful human experience. As increasing numbers of employers no longer see a college degree as an indicator of a candidate’s potential, we need to let go of the idea of college “at all costs” and instead focus on customizing practices to individual learners and their families: Ask each young person, “What are you curious about?” and then provide them with resources and systems to foster that curiosity. Stop thinking of students as a “team of one.” Evaluate what students bring to a team rather than assessing them individually against a law of average. Shift away from the idea of a college degree as a finish line to an “ATM model” in which students have lifelong access to training, resources and opportunities through an institution of higher learning.
