Senior Nonresident Fellow, King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies   He holds a PhD in Comparative Politics from the University of Hong Kong (HKU), an MA in International Relations and International History from the London School of Economics and Peking University, and a BSc in International Politics from Georgetown University. Prior to his appointment at CAIS, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences at HKU, working on a project examining the intersections between religion and infrastructure in the context of China's Belt and Road Initiative. Since 2015, he oversaw the development of the Asian Studies Program at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 2022, he was awarded a research fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to work on his upcoming book manuscript. Braised local beans with parma ham and spaghetti 1 stick celery, finely chopped 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 25g butter 4 slices parma ham, shredded 1 tablespoon tomato puree 250g mixed beans ( runner beans and green beans) topped tail and cut into 2cm pieces 250g local tomatoes cut the same size or whole if cherry tomatoes 250ml stock 300g dried spaghetti 75g hard cheese like parmesan/ Cais na Tire/ pecorino Handful fresh basil, parsley or lovage, chopped 1 tablespoon of good olive oilCook the onion, garlic and celery in the butter in a pan over low heat – keep a lid on and give it a stir occasionally, for 15 minutes or until soft. Add the ham and cook for a couple of minutes. Mix in the tomato puree and add the beans, tomatoes and stock. Place the lid on and simmer for 10 minutes. Cook the spaghetti for 10 minutes and then drain and add to the braised beans. Mix in the cheese and herbs. Check seasoning and serve in bowls with a drizzle of the good oil.

O português Luís Represas celebrava este ano 50 anos de carreira, tendo sido um dos mais importantes músicos do seu país. Morreu a 22 de Julho, com 69 anos, vítima de doença prolongada. A RFI passou em revista o legado de Represas com o musicólogo luso Pedro Félix. O Presidente português, António José Seguro, lembrou-o com emoção, descrevendo-o como um "músico de excepção, com um timbre de voz inigualável, que muito contribuiu para a afirmação e defesa da língua portuguesa". Já o Presidente timorense, José Ramos-Horta, disse que a sua canção Timor "fazia chorar as pessoas mais insensíveis". Foi a voz dos Trovante, banda de relevo do pós-25 de Abril, conhecida por êxitos como Perdidamente ou 125 Azul. Com a separação do grupo, em 1992, Luís Represas iniciou uma carreira a solo, aproximando-se de uma vertente mais pop. Citamos o seu maior êxito, Feiticeira, lançado em 1993, em colaboração com o compositor cubano Pablo Milanés, falecido em 2022. O musicólogo luso Pedro Félix, em entrevista à RFI, resume-nos o extenso legado de Luís Represas, começando por realçar a sua importância na transição que veio a marcar a música portuguesa. O Luís Represas, enquanto membro dos Trovante, que é o grande contributo da sua actividade enquanto músico, representou uma passagem na área da música popular em Portugal – quando digo música popular, é a música não erudita – em resposta ao que se pretendia ser uma música nova, jovem, mas politicamente mobilizada.  O disco Chão Nosso (1977) é talvez o melhor exemplo desse desse repertório, onde ele inclusivamente vai buscar alguns elementos musicais que eram associados à canção de protesto. Depois, ao longo do tempo, vão-se afastando dessa matriz, eventualmente ainda com eco de uma certa ruralidade, para uma música urbana, com temáticas urbanas novas que, num processo que começa, no Baile no Bosque (1981) e que se prolonga, diria até o disco Sepes (1988), aí com uma certa poesia e até com alguns elementos surrealistas. Há uma outra carreira dos Trovante, que começa com o Terra Firme (1987), em particular com um single de enorme sucesso, o 125 Azul. Tal como no trabalho a solo do Luís Represas, onde perde-se um bocadinho aquela aquela dimensão interventiva política e passam a temáticas eventualmente mais românticas, reflexivas, quase biográficas, pessoais.  E é este legado que consolidam numa carreira, todo um processo de mudança na música popular portuguesa que começa, no pós 25 de Abril, com uma canção de intervenção, que depois se torna progressivamente urbana, com temáticas urbanas denotando influências musicais internacionais e depois se tornam sucessos pop como 125 Azul. A banda Trovante formou-se em 1976, contribuindo para a actualização da música de intervenção nos primeiros anos do pós-revolução. Mas também trouxe uma abordagem mais moderna à música tradicional, recorrendo a elementos da música folclórica. Como é que os Trovante reflectiram o fervor político dos primeiros anos após a Revolução dos Cravos? O que trouxeram para o repertório musical no pós-25 de Abril?  O Chão Nosso (1977) e o Em Nome da Vida (1979) são dois discos claramente políticos do grupo Trovante, onde há uma dimensão programática muito intensa. Havia um interesse de apelar a uma camada jovem – as letras não apelavam tanto à luta, tanto à luta, como é o caso do Grupo de Acção Cultural de José Mário Branco – mas havia uma grande preocupação poética para para veicular um discurso com consciência de grupo, para não dizer de classe. Há também a utilização da poesia de poetas mobilizados politicamente. No último álbum com os Trovante, Luís Represas gravou Timor, música dedicada à luta pela independência do povo timorense. O Presidente timorense, José Ramos-Horta, disse que esta canção foi um «canto-grito poderoso de solidariedade, esperança e resistência que despertou consciências». Qual foi a importância desta música na carreira de Luís Represas, nomeadamente para o seu reconhecimento para além de Portugal? Aqueles anos foram anos de grande mobilização de toda a população pela causa timorense. E Timor tornou-se uma canção, quase diria uma espécie de hino informal ou dádiva de um hino informal para um movimento de autodeterminação que mobilizou toda a gente. Apelando um pouco à  minha idade, lembro-me bem da ocupação do espaço público, com manifestações absolutamente avassaladoras que ocuparam a cidade toda, as cidades todas. Havia todo um movimento social pela causa e que esta música foi efectivamente o hino informal de todo esse movimento. Acho que é um momento histórico, obviamente, para a carreira de qualquer músico, e para o Luís Represas, em particular. Depois da separação dos Trovante, Luís Represas lançou-se numa carreira a solo. O que nos pode dizer sobre essa carreira? A carreira a solo do Luís Represas é também fruto de uma ligação a uma tradição latino-americana, da qual ele falava muito, sobretudo da sua ligação a Cuba. Eu inscreveria mais numa espécie de continuação do grupo Trovante. A carreira a solo acaba por ser o trabalho dele, quando o grupo acaba por se separar, mas que ainda há este material na sua cabeça que precisa de ser gravado e cantado e tocado  ao vivo. Vejo muito na continuidade de toda esta história dos Trovante. Luís Represas continuou a sua ligação com a lusofonia. Miragem foi o seu último álbum, de 2024, descrito como uma ponte musical entre Portugal e o Brasil. Como é que analisa este último álbum? Para já, é muito interessante ver todo o universo de colaborações que Luís Represas estabeleceu: o Ivan Lins ou a Zélia Duncan serão eventualmente os nomes mais visíveis.  De certa forma, também fazem eco de todo um processo global, numa tentativa de criar algo novo a partir de materiais musicais que são identificáveis com determinadas geografias. Neste caso, sobretudo, o Brasil. Os Trovante passaram pelo rock progressivo, nos seus inícios, e, mais para o final, aproximaram-se da pop. A solo, Luís Represas também esteve mais ligado à pop, a uma canção mais romântica. No fundo, por que género musical ficará Luís Represas conhecido? Quando digo romântica – preciso esclarecer que não é propriamente romântica no sentido do nacional cançonetista que nós estávamos habituados – é uma nova narrativa modernizada. A canção 125 Azul é eventualmente a síntese desta visão ternurenta desse sentimento juvenil que começa a emergir.  Era algo que no fim dos anos 80, ainda não tinha propriamente uma "voz", e eu acho que, de certa forma, aquela canção é uma síntese desse mesmo processo. Luís Represas teve rapidamente o reconhecimento da crítica e do público, mas também um reconhecimento institucional, tendo sido condecorado pelo então Presidente português Jorge Sampaio, em 2005. O que significa, para um artista, ter todo este reconhecimento? Em termos da produção discográfica, aquela dupla do disco Baile no Bosque (1981) e Cais das Colinas (1983) foram eventualmente os primeiros grandes sucessos com grande impacto público. A canção Saudade é um belíssimo exemplo desse período. E gostava também de lembrar que já o disco Trovante 84 (1984), com os "caravelas" (Xácara das Bruxas Dançando) é um disco de enormíssimo impacto público. Esse reconhecimento, diria que começa em crescendo no início dos anos 80, obviamente que depois a condecoração é sempre um momento alto em qualquer biografia: é uma espécie de tributo do Estado a reconhecer o peso e o trabalho daquele criador. Obviamente que não só é um elemento fundamental para a biografia de quem é condecorado, como se torna um marco no contexto da música ou de qualquer produção artística em que é o Estado, todos nós, a reconhecermos que aquela pessoa se distingue na sua produção. É um marco para os dois lados, para quem atribui a condecoração – todos nós, por via do Presidente da República –  e de quem recebe, neste caso o Luís Represas. O que eu propunha era ouvirem as músicas, toda a carreira do grupo Trovante e do Luís Represas, que isso é que de facto é a grande memória e que nós podemos deixar a um músico, não é? É continuar a ouvir as músicas deles. Luís Represas deixou perto de cinco décadas de um vasto legado à música portuguesa, estando a preparar dois concertos nos Coliseus de Lisboa e do Porto, marcados para Abril de 2027. Esta semana marca o encerramento da exposição "Amazônia", de Sebastião Salgado, em Vitória. Em cartaz no Cais das Artes até o dia 5 de julho, no próximo domingo, a mostra já recebeu mais de 45 mil visitantes. A informação é da Secretaria de Estado da Cultura (Secult). Segundo a secretaria, "desde a abertura, passaram pelo local estudantes de escolas públicas e privadas, universitários, pesquisadores, integrantes de instituições culturais e sociais, turistas de diversas regiões do Brasil e visitantes de outros países. O expressivo público confirma o interesse pela obra de um dos fotógrafos mais importantes da história contemporânea e pela experiência imersiva proporcionada pela exposição", informa.Antes de chegar ao Espírito Santo, a exposição percorreu importantes centros culturais do Brasil e do exterior, passando por cidades como Paris, Londres, Roma, além de cidades brasileiras como Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo e Belém, atraindo mais de 2,5 milhões de visitantes ao redor do mundo. Acontece nesta quinta-feira (2) a inauguração do museu do Cais das Artes, na Enseada do Suá, em Vitória. A abertura do espaço cultural será com a exposição “Amazônia”, do fotógrafo Sebastião Salgado e com registros impressionantes sobre meio ambiente e questões sociais. O local conta com teatro, galerias e áreas de convivência e promete movimentar a cultura e o turismo no Espírito Santo. A mostra marca a inauguração do complexo e é a primeira exposição a ocupar um dos mais importantes e aguardados equipamentos culturais do Estado. Segundo informações da Secretaria da Cultura (Secult), a inauguração e a abertura da exposição acontecem às 10h, com a presença de convidados e autoridades. A visitação do público começa às 12h, com funcionamento até às 20h. A entrada é gratuita e os ingressos estarão disponíveis no site oficial do Cais das Artes (www.caisdasartes.com.br). Writer Róisín Michaux investigates women's rights and free speech in the context of the transgender movement. Róisín brings a uniquely European lens to her research, exposing how LGBTIQ activist organizations in Europe are heavily state-funded — unlike the U.S., where private foundations like the Rockefellers and Ford Foundation dominate — and how this funding pipeline has turbocharged some of the most extreme gender ideology we're seeing today.We dig deep into intersex activism: what it actually is, who's behind it, and why it matters for parents navigating the gender craze with their children. Róisín explains the crucial distinction between people with genuine disorders of sexual development (DSDs) — rare, named medical conditions like congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), Turner syndrome, and complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS) — and the largely queer-theory-driven "intersex identity" movement that has very little to do with medicine and everything to do with dismantling the sex binary.We also explore the history of brain sex research, how trans activists strategically abandoned the science when it stopped serving them, and how self-ID legislation spread from Argentina to across Europe through incremental legal maneuvers. I close with an important note for parents: understanding the politics of intersex activism is valuable, but knowing how to actually talk to your child about these issues is a different skill altogether — one I teach in ROGD Repair.Róisín Michaux is an Irish writer based in Brussels, Belgium. Introduction This episode of the InspirED SparkCast discusses the 2022 Independent School Cost-Per-Enrollment Study produced jointly by the Enrollment Management Association (EMA), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and National Business Officers Association (NBOA) to make informed decisions around funding and support for enrollment efforts.  [Links above lead to the study. Your school must be a member of one of the organizations to be eligible for download.] This is the Executive Summary on the NAIS website. Among the independent schools that participated in this research, enrollment costs were as follows: The median cost-per-enrollment (CPE) was $3,677 The median cost-per-inquiry (CPI) was $697 The median ROI was $7 in tuition for each dollar spent to enroll a new student in their first year Enrollment costs varied significantly across school demographics. The largest schools (those with 700+ students) had the lowest CPE of all school groups—and saw the highest return on their investment ($8.60 in tuition for each dollar spent on enrollment management in the first year of tuition). Elementary schools had the smallest cost per enrollment ($2,869 per enrollee vs. the median $3,677 per enrollee.)
