Janice Headley talks with Stuart Moxham of Young Marble Giants about Colossal Youth. This album from the Welsh post-punk trio may seem like a surprising entry on Kurt's list given its minimalist instrumentation, but these bands shared a similar disdain for the spotlight. Formed in Cardiff, Wales in 1978, Young Marble Giants released one – and only one – full-length record in 1980: “Colossal Youth” The sparse, quietly minimalist record was a stark contrast to much of the post-punk music being made at the time, and caught the ear of many including this week’s guest, Bioscience Professor and music lover Michael Bruford. Highly recommended! “If you think the world is A clutter of existence Falling through the air With minimal resistance You could be right, how would I know? Colossal youth is showing the way to go.”
From John Cale to the Manics, Anhrefn via the Darling Buds, Colossal Youth through Gorky's to Derrero and Steveless, a celebration of Welsh music.
Glenn and Peter talk about one of the most influential albums of the 1980s, released at the very start of its first year. The unassuming trio from Cardiff formed from the local scene and played local-sized gigs with patterns from a home-made drum machine on tape. Two songs on a neighbourhood compilation album later they were heard and signed by Geoff Travis for his eclectic hi-cred Rough Trade label. This, their only LP continues to influence bands at the indie end of town.

We talk to Welsh music legend Rhys Mwyn about how hearing the Sex Pistols changed his life, the importance of relentless gigging, managing Catatonia in their early days and how the likes of Anhrefn, Y Cyrff and Datblygu paved the way for the future generations of Welsh bands, especially Welsh language bands. Rhys also chooses Young Marble Giants' only studio album Colossal Youth as his favourite Welsh album and inducts it in to the Welsh Music Hall of Fame. Featuring the new single O Nefoedd! (Oh Heavens!) from Swansea band Bandicoot. Follow us on Twitter @welshmusicpod and visit www.welshmusicpodcast.co.uk for more information and to submit a track to showcase.
Now we’re talking. This is some serious Criterion Collection viewing right here. Pedro Costa’s docufiction is a snail’s-paced meditation on the lives of the largely Cape Verde immigrants living in the Fontainhas neighborhood of Lisbon, Portugal. This movie is not concerned with entertaining you. This movie is not concerned with delighting you. The rose-colored glasses of studio cinema are nowhere to be found. Follow Ventura (played by himself) as we walks from home to home, visiting with “his children” as he listens to recitations of their lives marked by the struggles of poverty and oppression. If you’d like to watch ahead for next week’s film, we will be discussing and reviewing Krzysztof Kieslowski’s The Double Life of Veronique (1991).
Stuart Moxham in conversation with David Eastaugh - talking about life in the band and making music. Young Marble Giants were a post-punk band formed in Cardiff, Wales in 1978. Their music was based around the vocals of Alison Statton along with the minimalist instrumentation of brothers Philip and Stuart Moxham. Their early sound was a sharp contrast with the more aggressive punk rock that dominated the underground at the time. Young Marble Giants have only released one full-length studio album, Colossal Youth, in 1980.
You Could Have It So Mutch Better de Franz Ferdinand sera leur 1er album à devenir numéro 1 des charts anglais en 2005 et quelques jours plus tard I Bet You Look Good on The Dancefloor des Artics Monkeys sera le 1er single numero 1.
