NLS Annotation Mercury rising: John Glenn, John Kennedy, and the new battleground of the Cold War DB110864 Shesol, Jeff Reading time: 11 hours, 40 minutes. James Frangione Biography History, Juvenile “A riveting history of the epic orbital flight that put America back into the space race. If the United States couldn’t catch up to the Soviets in space, how could it compete with them on Earth? That was the question facing John F. Kennedy at the height of the Cold War–a perilous time when the Soviet Union built the wall in Berlin, tested nuclear bombs more destructive than any in history, and beat the United States to every major milestone in space. The race to the heavens seemed a race for survival–and America was losing. On February 20, 1962, when John Glenn blasted into orbit aboard Friendship 7, his mission was not only to circle the planet; it was to calm the fears of the free world and renew America’s sense of self-belief. Mercury Rising re-creates the tension and excitement of a flight that shifted the momentum of the space race and put the United States on the path to the moon. Drawing on new archival sources, personal interviews, and previously unpublished notes by Glenn himself, Mercury Rising reveals how the astronaut’s heroics lifted the nation’s hopes in what Kennedy called the “hour of maximum danger.”” — Provided by publisher. "couda been smart coulda gone to college, been cool...all these circuits get crossed ZAP" - Bruce Willis explains autism Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Get ready for an action-packed, thought-provoking, and at times, contentious episode as the brothers tackle the 1998 thriller "Mercury Rising," starring the indomitable Bruce Willis! In this explosive film, Willis takes on the role of a fiercely libertarian and patriotic character—a running theme in many of his '90s movies. He's a man who doesn't place much trust in government institutions, but there's a twist: he's part of the FBI. It's a contradiction that sparks intrigue, particularly because Milenko finds themself deeply uncomfortable with the portrayal of an autistic child, played brilliantly by Miko Hughes. The plot is a rollercoaster of political intrigue and heart-pounding action. Bruce's character is haunted by a traumatic incident from his past, where a child he had grown close to during an undercover mission to combat extreme white nationalist violence was shot. The guilt and powerlessness he feels are palpable.Fast forward to the present, and Bruce stumbles upon a sinister plot to murder the savant child, portrayed by Miko Hughes, who possesses an extraordinary talent for solving puzzles. He deciphers a hidden message in a seemingly ordinary puzzle book, leading to a nerve-wracking hotline call. This sets off a chain reaction that leaves two NSA nerds in a tizzy and their boss, played by Alec Baldwin, ordering the unthinkable—a hit on the child's entire family, staged as a murder-suicide.But the kid escapes, and Bruce becomes his guardian, unable to trust anyone, not even his own agency. The movie is, in a word, outrageous. It's a wild ride of suspense, absurdity, and unexpected twists that keeps the audience guessing at every turn.Within this episode, the brothers embark on a truly intriguing conversation, navigating the complex terrain of "Mercury Rising," dissecting its portrayal of autism, its political themes, and its overall absurdity. It's a discussion that promises to be as engaging as the movie itself, and you won't want to miss it! We get back to covering actual Worst Picture Winners with 1998's An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn, winner at the 19th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards! You can tell how excited we were to talk about this one by how long we talk about whether Batman's a fascist in the opening. We break down what did and didn't work about the movie, marvel at how anyone could possible cast Harvey Weinstein in an on-screen role, dig into what went wrong with this film's bizarre soundtrack, lambast Joe Esterhaz's lazy writing while defending his Wookiee-like appearance, and try to grasp how a movie like this can be so bad that the director took an Alan Smithee credit himself unironically. We come up with film aliases for ourselves, Jack recounts a bathroom crime, and Joe struggles and fails to remember the title of Comedy Central's single-season adult animated series Kid Notorious about producer Robert Evans. The FinTech industry has had its fair share of young entrepreneurs, but few are quite as interesting as Jared Isaacman, a New Jersey native and high school dropout who founded his first startup when he was just 16. Today, Jared is the CEO and Chairman of Shift4 Payments, a publicly held leading provider of integrated payment processing and technology solutions, and a cofounder of Draken International, which provides mission-critical commercial military flight services to the US Department of Defense. While others reach for the sky, Jared aspires to infinity and beyond as a commercial astronaut, with his personally funded Inspiration4 venture becoming the first all-civilian mission to space when it launched in September 2021. Inspiration4 doubles as a worldwide charity campaign, calling attention to the mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, for which Jared has raised over $240 million. In today's episode, you'll learn more about the upcoming Polaris Dawn mission, which is set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2022. Listen in as Jared shares his passion for spaceflight to further human space exploration, some of the tangible philosophies that he took from SpaceX, and the additional business models he believes could arise from reusable rocket ships, as well as his recommended reads and more! Every single thing that SpaceX builds along the way can be monetized and opens up new [business] opportunities.” — @rookisaacman Key Points from this Episode An introduction to Jared Isaacman: entrepreneur, philanthropist, and civilian astronaut. When his journey into aerospace began and the timeline from pipe dream to space mission. The important role that philanthropy played in the Inspiration4 mission. Three tangible philosophies that Jared took from SpaceX and implemented at Shift4. Insight into Starlink and how the Polaris Program fits into their objectives. Intrinsic motivations for the Polaris Dawn mission and the private investment dollars that make it possible. Polaris' responsibilities, including testing the spacesuits manufactured by SpaceX. The interest that the Polaris Dawn mission has garnered from the public. Speculating on the additional business models that could arise from reusable rockets. Justifying the investment it would take to get to Mars and the many social and psychological issues that would need to be resolved beforehand. Why Jared says the least enjoyable part of the Inspiration4 mission was coming home. How a multi-talented entrepreneur like Jared juggles his numerous responsibilities. The flexibility (and scrutiny) he experienced as a public company CEO going to space. Find out how Shift4's employee base responded to going public. Jared's perspective on the strategic landscape in the payment space, given the crosscurrents that are occurring. Why he believes FinTech business owners go to space: pure fascination, not pure capital. An appreciation for checklists and being procedurally driven, both in business and in life. Recommended reads, including the SpaceX story, Liftoff, and Mercury Rising. Jared shares one of his ‘white whales'; a challenge he is still seeking to overcome.

Shock, surprises, and suffering are the most immediate results of all wars. Russia's brutal, yet deeply flawed invasion of Ukraine has profound implications for the West, global democracy, and the future of Europe and Russia. We hear the perspectives of two prominent thinkers, Jane Lytvynenko and Robert Kagen. Richard and Jim also share their analysis of the unexpected early outcomes of the war. This episode has extracts from an interview with Robert Kagan, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a contributing columnist for The Washington Post. He spoke with podcast producer and host Jenna Spinelle of "Democracy Works". We also share part of an interview from the current episode of "Democracy in Danger" with journalist Jane Lytvynenko, who covers technology, disinformation, and now, Ukraine. She was born in Kyiv. Jane is also a senior research fellow at Harvard University's Technology and Social Change Project at the Shorenstein Center. This podcast is produced with the generous help of the Democracy Group podcast network and the McCourtney Institute for Democracy at Penn State University. "I actually believe in the long run we will come out of this," says Robert Kagen. "Unfortunately, the long run may be longer than we want and we may be in this for 20 years.""Had the West stood up against the torture of protesters in Belarus, Russia would not have been able to put tanks there today," says Jane Lytvynenko. She argues for a more robust response by the West to attacks against democracy in other nations.Recommendation: Jim is reading “Mercury Rising. John Glenn, John Kennedy and the New Battleground of the Cold War" by Jeff Shesol. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome to Talktober! That's right, and entire month of talking... on a podcast... wait wait wait, this theme kinda makes sense. For spooky season, we are breaking from the tradition of nearly every episode of this show, where talk about a singular film or franchise, instead opting to a topic presented by each host. If you like this format, please let us know. If not, please let us know. This week's topic is hosted by Jake, who asks, "which are better, reboots or remakes?" Now, when we write these episode descriptions, it's kinda tough. Imagine a book report, but instead of a teacher, you are writing it for Skynet from Terminator (i.e., the Google algorithm). Given the topic this week, we literally touched on over 50 films, and now we are left trying to include mention of them in this description, but crafted in a way that is not a generic list. Let's see if this works... The discussion defends the Friday the 13th (2009) reboot, but trashes the Nightmare on Elm St. remake. We kinda defend the Rob Zombie Halloween reboot and distinguish it from a remake. We take a hefty dump on the Let the Right One In remake. The 13 Ghosts reboot kicks ass. The Carrie remake does not. The Blob can kinda be a reboot or a remake; find out which we call it. The Hills Have Eyes has a remake, or is it a reboot? The Thing gets arguably the most successful reboot ever, but Psycho may have the worst remake. The Fly has a wicked reboot. The Omen has a dorky remake. The Child's Play reboot is amazing, shut up. The Grudge remake is butts. The Evil Dead (2013) reboot rules your behind. The Ring remake is caca. Evil Dead II is a reboot, right? My Bloody Valentine has a remake and it's not worth watching. Piranha 3D is a great way to revitalize a franchise. Willard is a rat-infested remake. Dawn of the Dead is a bombastic reboot, whereas both Night of the Living Dead remakes from 1990 & 3D 2006 are alright. I am Legend and Omega Man are different and thusly we have a reboot. No one gives Manhunter credit, but its remake, Red Dragon, is a masterclass. The Crazies is kinda bleh until its reboot. Quarantine is a lesser remake of Rec. Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a super fun, vibrant reboot. Amityville Horror... sigh... is fine, but the sequels need to shut up. House of Wax/ House of Wax/ Tourist Trap are all movies. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot/ remake argument could go round and round like leatherface's chain. Black Christmas has shitty remakes that pretend to be reboots. Suspiria is great in both forms. Pet Sematary has a reboot. And then we talk about a bunch of other flicks, so just like... download this episode and let us word vomit inside of your noggin, bruh. Doug also interviews extreme videographer and director, Samhel. These gents have a show coming up on Friday at Dublin Castle in London, what what. Try and make it, if you're cool. If not, also try and make it so you can learn how to become cool. When we think of the space race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, we focus much on the Apollo program and the U.S. astronauts who crossed that finish line. But the space race began earlier than that and was far more perilous than we thought.

Finally, the Miami duo picks their most surprising players where they discuss Myisha Hines-Allen of the Washington Mystics, Betnijah Laney of the Atlanta Dream, and Phoenix's Bria Hartley.
