Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! This episode, we look back at two hugely influential women artists – Patti Smith, whose 1975 “Horses” album inspired so many artists, and Marianne Faithfull, whose passing in January, 2025, is a huge loss.  “Horses”, with its confrontational approach - “Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine” - changed the landscape of rock music for the next few decades.  Produced by John Cale, of Velvet Underground fame, the album opened the door for so many women, including Blondie and so many English punk and new wave bands.  We talk about why we like this album, its influential impact, and how Patti Smith developed over later years. Marianne Faithfull has long been one of our favourites, and we talked about “Broken English” in Season 3. (If you haven't heard that episode, here's the link.) Tributes have come from every corner of the industry, all saying one thing – Marianne was inspirational to everyone she worked with, from The Rolling Stones to Metallica to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Banging our own drum for a moment, we've just been named as one of the top Australian Music Podcasts by monitoring service, Feedspot, which compiles the most comprehensive list of Australian Music Podcasts on the web. Great subjects.  Great episode.  Enjoy.  References:  Marianne Faithfull, Patti Smith, Andrew Loog Oldham, Sister Morphine, Girl on a Motorcycle, Samuel Beckett, homelessness, Hipgnosis, Storm Thorgerson, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, “The Memory Remains”, Metallica, Lars Ulrich, Warren Ellis, She Walks in Beauty, Graham Coxon, Blur, TOTO, “Africa”, “Hold The Line”, "Rosanna”, Robert Dimery, 1001 Albums You Must Listen to Before You Die,  Jim Morrison, oil shortage – 70's, Robert Mapplethorpe, Allen Lanier, Blue Öyster Cult, Tom Verlaine, Television, "Break It Up",  John Cale, “Gloria”, Van Morrison, “Marquee Moon”, “Land (Horses)”, “Radio Ethiopia”, “Wave”, “Easter”, “Because the Night”, Siouxsie Sioux, Siouxsie & The Banshees, R.E.M.,  Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Morrissey, Johnny Marr,  Courtney Love, Hole, PJ Harvey Episode playlistHorsesBroken EnglishMarianne Faithfull - Series 3, Episode 14

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Every band/artist has to have a first album.  Sometimes those albums are good, sometimes they're not, and sometimes they just show potential.  This episode, we look at some first albums over the gamut of the rock era that we regard as great, including some Australian albums. You've probably heard of most, but not all. In rock news, we look at Neil Young, The Wiggles (yes!), Joe Bonamassa, Jethro Tull and Billboard's new list – The Top 200 Albums of the 21st Century.  Our Album You Must Hear before You Die is Paris 1919 by John Cale. Mick regards this elegant 1973 album from the Velvet Underground co-founder as a stunning listen, and a great intro to John Cale.  Chris Thomas' production is, as usual, precise, while Cale presents some wonderful imagery in the lyrics.   References:  John Cale, Paris 1919, “A Child's Christmas in Wales”, Fragments of a Rainy Season, Brian Wilson, UCLA Symphony Orchestra, Words for the Dying, Dylan Thomas, Chris Thomas, Roxy Music, Eno, Sex Pistols, Pretenders, INXS, Bowie, Lou Reed, Queen, The Police, Outlandos d'Amour, “Can't Stand Losing You”, “Roxanne”, Stewart Copeland, Sting, Rod Stewart, The Tubes, “White Punks on Dope”, “What do you want from life?”, “a baby's arm holding an apple”, Kate Bush, The Kick Inside, David Gilmour, “Wuthering Heights”, Wuthering Heights Day, Roxy Music, Kari-Ann Moller, Chris Jagger, Andy Mackay, saxophone, “Re-make / Re-model", Bryan Ferry, Steely Dan, Can't Buy a Thrill, Jeff (Skunk) Baxter, “Do it Again”, “Reelin' in the Years”, “Only a fool would say that”, John Lennon, Imagine, Robert Dimery, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Peter Gabriel, The Cure, Three Imaginary Boys, Boys Don't Cry, "10:15 Saturday Night", Robert Smith, Television, Marquee Moon, Devo, Q: Are We Not Men? Marquee Moon, the debut album by Television, released in 1977, is widely regarded as a cornerstone of punk rock and post-punk. With its angular, intricate guitar work and poetic lyrics, the album broke away from the fast-and-furious energy of typical punk, offering a more artful and complex sound. The title track, "Marquee Moon," with its extended guitar solos, became a defining moment in rock history. The band's interplay of guitars, especially between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd, along with Verlaine's distinct vocal delivery, made Marquee Moon a critically acclaimed work that continues to influence musicians across genres.Listen to the album Apple Music Listen to the album on Spotify What did you think of this album? If you ranked rock's great two-guitar tandems, Television's Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine would be at or near the top. Verlaine was the poetic songwriter, idiosyncratic singer and improvisatory guitarist, but Television would not have been Television without Lloyd's dazzling counterpunches and composed solos that take melodic leaps no one could anticipate. Television launched the mid-1970s art-punk scene at the grungy East Village club CBGB and produced arguably the greatest album from that era, Marquee Moon. How did the band capture such combustible magic in songs like “See No Evil” and the epic title track? Why did Television make only two more studio albums, and why was Lloyd dissatisfied with each? Why did Jimi Hendrix punch out a teenage Lloyd? What impact did drugs and alcohol have on Lloyd'? How did he wind up making more great music with Matthew Sweet? And how did he feel when Television moved on without him? Was he in touch with Verlaine before the Television leader died a year ago?

Television came out of the CBGB's scene in New York (in fact, they were the first rock band to play the legendary club), but they never fit the "Punk" or "New Wave" label. They were unique, which is why their debut album Marquee Moon sounds timeless, as fresh today as the day it was released in 1977. Fronted by two great guitarists-- the mercurial Richard Lloyd and the enigmatic Tom Verlaine, who also provided unorthodox vocals and most of the songwriting-- Television would influence generations of bands that followed. Though they never achieved commercial success, Marquee Moon regularly appears on virtually every "Greatest Albums Of All Time" list. On this episode, we explore the track that opens the album, "See No Evil". Summary: Sara takes (kind of sort of) a break from talking fanfic and bandfic to talk about a different form of storytelling– music, and writing about music! shineswithyou is a familiar face around Oasis and U2 tumblr, but what you might NOT know is that she has recently embarked on a writing journey of her own, with a substack blog about music and its place as the soundtrack of her own life. Sara and shines talk about her blog, and the difficulty of “writing words about sounds”; how music is a language in and of itself capable of telling its own (and our own) stories. Of COURSE we loop it back around to fanfiction and RPF (or, ‘real person fanfiction'), and how bandfic is, at its core, a pure form of love for the musical artist. Other talking points include: how awesome Bono is, and how we wish we could have been at Slane Castle in 2001; the perennial dysfunction of the Gallagher brothers; and the dichotomy of the U2 and Oasis fandoms. And while you could argue discrepancies outweigh similarities between The Stooges’ Raw Power, Television’s Marquee Moon, Gang of Four’s Entertainment!, and XTC’s Black Sea, one word seems to encapsulate the shared aesthetic among protos and posties: “angular”.  How often have you heard of an artist being labelled “over-rated”? Did it strike you as fair, or just a subjective, lazy way to insult artists you don't like? Mick & Jeff look at the concept of ‘over-rated' as a way of describing artists, and consider whether certain artists ARE, in fact, over-rated, and, if so, why or why not?  Our album you MUST Listen to Before You Die is “Bossanova” by the Pixies. We talk about where the Pixies fit into the music universe and where this album fits in their canon of work.    Jeff provides a dip sample of some of the rock news so far this year, an update on what's happened to Princess Fionnula now that's she's gone back to Ireland, and some of the finer points of beer tasting!  References:  Foo Fighters, Taylor Hawkins, Robert Forster, Go Betweens, “Venus”, Television, Marquee Moon, Justin Bieber, Mastodon, Elton John concert, Ian “Molly” Meldrum, Rolling Stone, “Top Australian Albums of 2022”, “King Stingray”, King Stingray, “Angel in Real Time”, Gang of Youths, “PrePleasure”, Julia Jacklin, “Matter of Time”, Meg Mac, Pixies, “Bossanova”, “Doolittle”, Tromp le Monde, “Wave of Mutilation”, Rolling Stones, Jeff Buckley, John Cale, “I like your old stuff better than your new stuff”, Ramones, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Doors, “The 27 Club”, Rage Against the Machine, Pink Floyd, “Another Brick in the Wall”, KISS, Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Sex Pistols, Led Zeppelin, Oasis/Liam Gallagher/Noel Gallagher, Guns'n'Roses, The Smiths, Toto Overated Playlist

This week, Alan, Quinta, and Scott talked over some of the various natsec stories blowing up headlines, including:“The Truth is Up There…And We Shot It Down.” Last week's controversy over a Chinese spy balloon has blown up, as the United States and Canada have shot down a number of similar unidentified flying objects over their airspace in the past few days. But why is the Biden administration being so close-lipped about what these things are? Is there reason for concern?“Now I Know How Joan of Arc Felt.” Special Counsel Jack Smith appears to be turning up the heat on associates of former President Trump: former Vice President Pence is reportedly invoking both executive privilege and the Speech and Debate Clause to avoid testifying before a grand jury, while Smith is pushing to overcome another witness's claim of attorney-client privilege on the basis of the crime-fraud exception. What should we make of these moves? What do they tell us about where the investigation is headed? “Oh Nikki, You're On Time, First in Line, It Blows My Mind.” Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley is the first Republican to officially step up and compete against former President Trump for the Republican nomination for president. Why declare now? And what does her candidacy mean for the race? For object lessons, Alan dipped back into his high school literature reading list and endorsed John Steinbeck's “East of Eden.” Quinta recommended the Rolling Stone piece we've all been waiting for: a profile of influential right-wing sh*tposter @Catturd2. And Scott urged listeners to check out the band Television's 1977 classic “Marquee Moon” in honor of its frontman Tom Verlaine, who passed away a few weeks ago. Hosted on Acast. Never Mind the Bullocks, Rocket to Russia, Animals, Low, My Aim is True, Heroes, Rumours and yes, Aja all came out in 1977 and Television's Marquee Moon might be the best of all of them.  It's punk but atmospheric, arty but accessible, full of attitude but emotional, catchy but virtuosic.  It's the masterpiece that hides in the shadows, sneaks up on you and then stays with you for the rest of your life.  We find a variety of ways to express this sentiment over and over again for an hour and half.  Enjoy!     RIP Tom Verlaine  RIP Bob Nalbandian   Recommended Listening    Omertà 68  Zero Days Without Incident https://open.spotify.com/album/6jtAeF8OGvPnDcOtdBc1Zc?si=LhRq8f1HQ8WumIHu4wLqpQ   Sunn O)))  Metta Benevolence BBC6 Music https://open.spotify.com/album/5Y8LeGLMZnHXicnAwmMr3j?si=kWxajMlFT4CLjNESK2OMmQ Altar https://open.spotify.com/album/0v2IQBEPQqlKFiAa5rj1AC?si=SkkiFjTfQiaY8hF4pU6Fig   Bernard Purdie Purdie Good https://open.spotify.com/album/2A3zUHI72wEKSxMTJBsuh2?si=S1RpS2xLQvGsYGDxIlcXFA   The Best of Mod Jazz https://open.spotify.com/album/51NkEaKdNj3m2ncmFXW7wY?si=mLF4gegbR9q5k9GmIpEYNg   The Greg Kihn Band  “The Breakup Song” https://open.spotify.com/track/3gHyNUxOEZq4VltRl2xUW4?si=3586a1ed7dd044a3   huntsmanhill.com huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   HHPP Amazon Affiliates Store https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/06/09/hhpp-store/   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRw Academy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c   Omertà 68:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/6dfiCa0qTlbPQUrqtIkStS?si=6SCjNtXbSO2xRBDuBKJelQ

On this week's podcast, we have another “Listener's Choice,” the 1977 debut by Television - Marquee Moon.  Recorded in the fall of 1976 and released in February of 1977, Marquee Moon was a critical darling and a minor hit in the UK. Music fans in the US outside of New York were indifferent. Which is unfortunate because Marquee Moon is an album worthy of attention.  Over the melodic yet solid rhythm section of drummer Billy Ficca and bassist Fred Smith, duel lead guitarists Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd bring their own distinctive styles to the band's music, and create something unlike anything coming out of New York or anywhere else at the time.  Add Verlaine's quirky vocal whine, and you have one of the most incredibly innovative and unique albums ever recorded, and one that influenced the music of late 20th century well beyond the limits of its commercial success. Sadly, Tom Verlaine passed away on January 28, 2023. He was 73 years old.

--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/boia/message

Quality is our motto this week when we become the best podcast about Television and James Bond's upstairs neighbor, the 107th greatest album of all time, Marquee Moon.   But before we get to the album, we're talking about the songs that were hits on our 21st birthday and the discussion gets quite hot. Then we discuss custom cowboy hats, vanity license plates, and professional cornhole players. We also are proud to release our merch store [NOTE FROM ROB] (the merch store has been shut down by the website.... I'll let you know when it is back up)  where you can buy all the new Beck Did it Better Swag. We are officially a cash cow.   Then at (1:00:00) we break out our ass-less chaps and share our thoughts on Television and their debut studio album, Marquee Moon. We discuss the Mixolydian mode (which Aaron mocks), french poetry (which Matt confuses with a Stallone franchise), and the best bands to come out of the CBGB club in New York City (which Russ had never heard of).   Next week you can either deal it out or deal with all that we lay down when we become the best Fiona Apple podcast and talk about her alternative rock album When the Pawn...   Call or text 802 277 BECK.  Don't be a brat! You can email us at beckdiditbetter@gmail.com follow us on our Twitter and Instagram @beckdiditbetter and feel free to leave a review on your favorite podcast app. Please mention feet if you do review the show. If we can get "ROSIE LOVES FEET" to be something that is searchable online, I feel like this will all be worth it.

We're kick starting our dive into post-punk & new wave with a look back at our episode on Television's debut record Marquee Moon from 1977. Alongside Blondie, The Ramones, and other bands that shared the stage at the birthplace of punk in New York City, CBGB, Television was lumped into the punk rock category, and for good reason...but their jazz-improv guitar stylings and sporadic vocals placed them on the other side of that punk rock coin, changing the post-punk game forever.Tracklist: Marquee Moon See No Evil Friction Elevation The Ventures - Cruel Sea (The Cruel Surf) live in Japan '65
