CW: This episode discusses cinematic sexual violence. The film writer Corey Atad returns to the pod for a two-parter on Steven Spielberg's 2005 masterpiece Munich, which turns 20 years old this year and yet has barely aged a day. Spielberg starts the film with Black September's terror attack on the Israeli team at the 1972 Munich Olympics and then follows a secret team of Israelis dispatched by their government to hunt down and kill 11 Palestinians around Europe said to have played a role in the massacre. But as their violent mission continues, Avner (Eric Bana) and his team start to doubt the nobility of their task as the compounding violence they commit corrodes their souls. In this first episode, Corey and I discuss Spielberg as a master filmmaker at the height of his powers, the brilliant, clear-eyed screenplay by Tony Kushner and how a film understood to be a comment on the 9/11 attacks when first released can be seen better now as a film about the harsh truths of the Israel/Palestine conflict and the futility of fighting terrorism with counter-terrorism. We contrast this look at Munich with another adaptation of the source material, the forgotten 1986 Canadian TV movie Sword of Gideon based on George Jonas' 1984 non-fiction book Vengeance, a more openly Zionist interpretation of the text. And we discuss some of our favourite parts of Munich including the notorious sex scene! Part two of this discussion is available on the Patreon feed: more about Munich and Sword of Gideon, the documentary One Day In September and an extended discussion of the new film about the Munich Olympics massacre, September 5. The film writer Corey Atad and I went on opening day to see the new Clint Eastwood courtroom drama Juror #2, which is getting an extremely limited release in North America even though Warner Bros. gave it a full rollout in the UK, France and Spain. Why is David Zaslav doing Clint, still working at age 94, one of the icons of American cinema and of Warner Bros., so dirty? Before seeing Clint's latest, Corey embarked on a journey into the last decade of Eastwood's work for his Substack, so we touch on these films and where Juror #2 fits in with the preoccupations of Clint in his Late Style period, a series of films that examine what takes to be a hero, the concepts of right and wrong, the challenges of modern American life, and the people trying to do their best within failing systems, in this case a struggling justice system not designed to handle people operating out of self-interest. In our discussion we don't give away any spoilers for Juror #2 that aren't in the trailer. Go see this movie! Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. Costner resuscitated his career as a leading man thanks to television with Yellowstone and then surprisingly left the series to begin work on Horizon (which may have been a factor in his wife's filing for divorce after he started selling his properties to finance the production). Warner Bros. through its studio New Line Cinema agreed to release the first two instalments, initially scheduled to open within weeks of one another, but when the first chapter tanked at the box office the studio indefinitely postponed the release of Chapter Two. Corey and I went to see the first one (in an empty theatre) and we talk about the film as Costner's personal vision, how it compares to his other films as a director, and how this planned theatrical epic still cannot escape the shadow of television or transcend the history of the genre. The writer Corey Atad joins me from Phuket, Thailand for a sequel to our Junk Filter episode about Bane that turned into a discussion about Tenet, and we return to the topic because of the recent cultural reconsideration of Christopher Nolan's 2020 time-bending thriller, which was released during the pandemic and has taken some time to find an audience.  Tenet got a one-week re-release in 70mm and IMAX 70mm in the leadup to this year's Academy Awards, and Corey and I discuss the film as Nolan's temporal pincer movement; it turns out he released the sequel to Oppenheimer 4 years ago, and we are only realizing it now. Unlike his latest, Tenet is about “the bomb that didn't go off”, and is a film that perhaps needs to be seen a few times to be best appreciated, especially after seeing Oppy. We talk about Nolan's methodology, including the evolution of his creative team (his new cinematographer, editor and composer are bringing out the best in him), his award-season victory lap, and we go over the complex structure of Tenet, including the things that happen that maybe we don't even understand after seeing it a few times but are clearer when seen theatrically… but do we even need to understand everything we enjoy?  Plus: Bane jokes!  Become a patron of the podcast to access to exclusive episodes every month. On this edition of Parallax Views, freelance writer Corey Atad, who has written in such publications as Esquire, Slate, Hazlitt, and The Baffler, joins the show to discuss his piece in Welcome to Hellworld on Jonathan Glazer's Oscar speech and the reaction to said speech. Glazer decided to bring up the Gaza War when accepting the award for his Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest. He was accused of saying he was "refuting his Jewishness and the memory of the Holocaust" even though the clip was taken out of context. What he said was actually a commentary on the hijacking of Jewish identity and Holocaust memory for political purposes (which is what he sought to refute), a warning/call to resistance against dehumanization. As Glazer explained, he felt that Zone of Interest was not just a film about the past, but also the present. In other words: we need to be aware of where dehumanization has led in the past and where it could lead in the present. Glazer also made reference to Israel's Occupation of Palestinian territories during this speech. This has all sparked backlash and the aforementioned distortion of Glazer's words. A letter signed by at least a thousand people in Hollywood (some, like Jennifer Jason Leigh, recognizable, but many not) denouncing Glazer. Other, such as playwright Tony Kushner and the Auschwitz Memorial director Piotr Cywiński, have come to Glazer's defense. Corey joins the show to give his take on the speech as well as to offer his commentary on The Zone of Interest and relaying the tale of actress Vanessa Redgrave's 1978 Oscar speech which cause a similar controversy when she called out the extremist Jewish Defense League (referring to them as "Zionist hoodlums). We'll also delve into The Zone of Interest from the perspective of Hannah Arendt's "banality of evil" concept, Corey's criticism of The Zone of Interest, and the themes of alienation at the heart of The Zone of Interest's story centered on Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss, his wife Hedwig, and their family against the backdrop of the Third Reich's exterminatory horrors. All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views.

The writer Corey Atad returns to the pod for a discussion of the controversial new eco-thriller How to Blow Up a Pipeline, an action film inspired by Andreas Malm's best-selling non-fiction work that argues in favour of direct and destructive action against the fossil fuel industry to escalate the battle against climate change. The film dramatizes the blowing-up of a pipeline by depicting the act as if it were a heist film, with stopwatch-precise editing and flashbacks explaining how the members of the crew found each other. We discuss (in some detail) the criticism the film has received from the left and from the right: some on the left feel the movie fails a purity test by being marketed and released in multiplexes by film financiers and studios with ties to Big Oil, while some on the right are furious this pro-terrorist “Hollywood propaganda” is meant to turn the audience into radical extremists. But we also talk about the film itself, and how its in league with classic genre entertainments like First Bloodthat function both as dynamic thrillers and delivery devices for deeper social commentary. Roxana Hadadi, a TV critic for New York magazine's culture site Vulture. and returning guest Corey Atad join me for an enthusiastic discussion of Tony Gilroy's ambitious new Disney Star Wars streaming series Andor. Gilroy, who had been brought in by Lucasfilm to rescue the troubled production Rogue One in 2016, recently returned to the franchise for a series that provides a backstory for the character Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) who sacrificed his life to steal the plans for the Death Star. But Andor the series is not really a Space Opera with the typical fan servicing Disney has provided Star Wars fans in recent years. Instead it's a program built as a series of mini arcs that analyze how fascist rule is systemically maintained (through private police, colonial rule and the prison industrial complex) and how people living under such a system can either become radicalized, victimized or complicit. It's Star Wars fused with Blade Runner, The Battle of Algiers and yes, Michael Clayton. We discuss the show's intelligent design and impeccable vibes, and we wonder, for a show that is so clearly sympathetic to antifascism, why it hasn't enraged the culture warriors on the right who are usually always angry about Star Wars. Audiences that went to see Tenet in August when it was assumed to be The Movie That Will Save Cinema were bound to be somewhat disappointed, but seen now without that kind of pressure on it, stoned on the couch at home, Corey and I argue that Tenet is actually a Dudes Rock movie and that its incomprehensibility can be best appreciated as a feature, not a bug. Time to drink up, me hearties, because your beloved (hopefully beloved) crew members of the damned ship Mousterpiece are at it again. This week, they return to the fabled Caribbean to discuss the third film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. For this episode, Josh, Mike, and Gabe were joined by special guest Corey Atad of Movie Mezzanine, to have a hearty, spirited debate about this 2007 blockbuster. Is it a bloated, overly bombastic action movie that's tiresome, or is its bloat and bombast exactly why it's so great? Your crew and their guest were definitely divided on the film's quality, the romance, and even Chow-Yun Fat! Drop anchor and check out the new show! (And fair warning, me buckoes: there's a bit of salty language in this episode, so be warned!)

Once more into the fray, dear friends. Yes, this week on Mousterpiece Cinema, Josh and Gabe return to the regular schedule by ripping off another painful bandage known as the 2006 direct-to-DVD midquel The Fox and the Hound 2. But it features the voices of Reba McEntire and Patrick Swayze! What could go wrong? Well, the unfortunate answer is quite a lot. Josh and Gabe are joined by special guest Corey Atad to talk about exactly what did go wrong with this uninvolving and dull story, to discuss whether or not these types of movies destroyed Disney's reputation, and to reveal which of them worked on The Dark Knight Rises. No, the last point doesn't have much to do with The Fox and the Hound 2, but you may be surprised by the answer. You'll have to check out the new Mousterpiece Cinema to find out!
