Audiences seemed mostly disinterested; critics were right on the fence; and the box office was generally unimpressive, all things considered. But who cares about all that stuff? How does Brad Bird's family-friendly sci-fi epic hold up after a particularly long eight years? My guest Rob Hunter (of the excellent Film School Rejects) offers a strong defense of this scrappily optimistic and undeniably beautiful-looking movie. (My apologies for using the word scrappily.) The writer Meg Shields (Film School Rejects) returns to the show for a look at one of the highlights of Criterion Channel's lineup of 80s Horror, Chuck Russell's 1988 remake of the fifties cult classic The Blob. Not as celebrated as two other eighties Body Horror remakes of fifties sci-fi (Carpenter's The Thing and Cronenberg's The Fly), The Blob is ripe for rediscovery with it's incredible use of practical special effects and miniatures to tell the tale of a goopy pink organism that terrorizes a small ski town in California which is revealed not to be an alien creature but in fact a secret biological weapon on the loose when government agents seize control of the area in an attempt to contain it. But a pair of plucky local teens (Shawnee Smith and Kevin Dillon) might be mankind's only hope for survival. The Blob succeeds thanks to a smart screenplay by Chuck Russell and Frank Darabont that leans into the ridiculousness of the premise while showing a gleeful disregard for genre expectations throughout. A box office flop at the time thanks to a bad marketing campaign, sometimes movies like The Blob take a long time to find an audience. Plus: Meg recommends some other highlights of Criterion's well-chosen lineup of eighties horror offerings. We promised on the last episode that we would return from the Fantastic Fest film festival with some seriously cool filmmaker conversations, but we had no idea we would come back with these two rad discussions. We're thrilled to have Michael Giacchino and Andy Park on the show this week, chatting about their Marvel Studios experiences and how they're transforming their childhood comic book obsessions into a live-action reality. These two geeks have done so much good for their nerd community. Up first, we chat with director/composer Michael Giacchino about Werewolf by Night, the first-ever Marvel Studios "Special Presentation," set to air on Disney+ this Friday (10/7). We were lucky enough to catch the Werewolf by Night Fantastic Fest Secret Screening, and we're delighted to report that the film is spooktacular. While it feels and looks unlike any other entry in the franchise, Werewolf by Night contributes tremendously to the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Giacchino tells us about his earliest experiences with the Werewolf by Night comic books and how his passion for them extends from his passion for Universal monster and Hammer horror movies. These influences are readily apparent in his adaptation, shot lovingly in black and white, and performed by incredible actors (Gael García Bernal, Laura Donnelly) who are locked into a similar, nostalgic spirit. In the episode's second half, we speak with Andy Park, Marvel Studios' Director of Visual Development. Our first encounter with the MCU's live-action characters frequently occurs through his artwork. Neither of us will forget the first time we saw Park's concept art for Captain Marvel projected in Hall H, and we're still reeling from how his Thunderbolts piece roared through the D23 Hall in Anaheim. Park discusses the challenges of adaptation, knowing when to deviate from comic book designs and when to adhere to them strictly. As a massive fan of these characters and as a comic book artist himself, Park strives to replicate the look and tone of these iconic costumes. This passion is most notable when explaining why the Scarlet Witch had to have a proper, physical crown, not a CGI halo. If Marvel was gonna go full Witch, they had to go full witch, right? Be sure to follow Andy Park on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Let Michael Giacchino know how much you love Werewolf by Night this weekend via his Twitter, Instagram, and Website. Release the crossover! Nate and his friend Elijah “The Littlest Gatekeeper” Thomas start a new annual tradition for their podcasts, The Monster Island Film Vault and Kaiju Conversation, respectively, by discussing a Ray Harryhausen film every year. Why? Because they both share a birthday with the special effects legend. Also, since these two are weird, they're going in reverse filmography order, starting with the original Clash of the Titans. This epic adventure was a relic when it came out, but given Harryhausen's romantic love of the past and love of the classics, it's not surprising. Your hosts dive deep into this film's production—Arnold Schwarzenegger was nearly the lead?!—and discuss the many incredible mythological creatures that appear in it. As Harryhausen's best friend, the author Ray Bradbury, said, Medusa in this film is Harryhausen's “crowning glory.” Just forgive Elijah for being a bit snobby about it. Happy birthday, Ray! Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we explore the agony and the ecstasy of the Almost Movie Star: young performers who found success early on and were given a few opportunities to establish themselves as bankable leading performers. Our subject on this episode: Taylor Kitsch. We focus on his full career, with a special investigation on his 2012 slate: John Carter, Battleship, and Savages. Our guest is Valerie Ettenhofer, TV critic at Film School Rejects and News writer at Slash Film. A longtime Tim Riggins fan and incredibly well-watched critic, she brings her insights to examine what about Kitsch works so well and what may have prevented him from breaking out as a worldwide movie star. Kitsch has been in the public consciousness for over a decade and a half, standing out among a stacked cast in the seminal show Friday Night Lights. For the young actor, the project was an early, creative windfall. An aspiring hockey player undone by injury, he enjoyed a short-lived stint as a model but struggled to find sustained work. At one point, he lived in his car in Los Angeles. He was couch-surfing in New York before that. Retreating back to Canada, he began getting cast as the one-scene himbo in a couple of movies (John Tucker Must Die, Snakes on a Plane) before landing a bigger part in the surprisingly-enduring The Covenant. Then came Tim Riggins. And the rest is history. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Anna Swanson, Senior Contributor for Film School Rejects, returns to the podcast to discuss The Riddler (aka Ridley Scott) and the two all-star historical epics he has released this fall, October's The Last Duel (the critically acclaimed drama that unexpectedly bombed) and November's House of Gucci (a critically drubbed melodrama that has become a sizeable hit). We discuss some of the criticism The Last Duel has received about it's unusual storytelling structure, why Ben Affleck's over-the-top supporting performance in Duel works while Jared Leto's cartoonish turn in Gucci doesn't, the response from the Gucci family over their portrayal in the movie, and the 83-year-old Riddler's delightful IDGAF attitude towards churlish criticism of his Late Style output. They should have never given Kevin Costner money. This week we take a look at a movie so boring and tedious that we struggle to tell the difference between the 3 hour theatrical cut and damn near 4 hour directors cut. Yes, it's time for 1990's Best Picture winner and the highest grossing western of all time, Dances With Wolves.  We're joined by the incredible Shea Vasser to discuss how this movie is so long yet nothing happens. Also what was up with Mary McDonnell's hair, several wild behind the scenes stories, and marvel at how this movie won so many damn awards.  Movies recommended: One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, Reservation Dogs.  Please do yourself a favor and read Shea's excellent Through a Native Lens column at Film School Rejects where she breaks down some of the best and worst of indigenous representation in film.  And as always, check us out at @white_pod on Twitter, and feel free to write us at whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod@gmail.com  We love you, see you next week!

Back in 2010 Mark Gatiss coined the term "Unholy Trinity" in his BBC documentary series A History of Horror, in regards to three seminal British folk horror movies, a subgenre that gained popularity in the late 1960's and beyond. The three films were 1968's Witchfinder General, 1971's The Blood on Satan's Claw and 1973's The Wicker Man. We first heard the term "Unholy Trinity" back when we watched Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, a documentary about the history of folk horror that we covered on episode 145: SXSW Film Festival 2021. BC-based film writer Meg Shields returns to the podcast for a conversation about her favourite movie, John Boorman's Excalibur (1981), the definitive screen version of the legend of King Arthur. Reportedly Zack Snyder's favourite film too, Excalibur kickstarted a wave of sword and sorcery movies in the early eighties. Filmed entirely on location in Ireland and featuring several future stars in the vast supporting cast (including Helen Mirren, Gabriel Byrne and Liam Neeson), Excalibur is a berserk personal vision along the lines of Boorman's previous fantasy films Zardoz and Exorcist II: The Heretic, depicting the Arthurian legend in a weird mixture of historical realism (muddy battlefields, heavy armour and ugly combat) and phantasmagoric delight (modern levels of sleaze and violence). It makes you wonder why people still keep trying to make King Arthur movies! Plus: RIP Richard Donner, and all hail Stephen Dorff for trashing Marvel movies! We went into The Empty Man expecting a subpar knockoff of the Slender Man story and were we delightfully surprised to see that it was anything but! Receiving a similar fate to another overlooked horror film that Disney unceremoniously dumped after acquiring Fox, this "rough edit" release - as writer/director David Prior considers it - foregoes jump scares and traditional horror tropes in order to craft a moody, dreadful story chock full of surreal and impressionistic imagery.  No tangents, prefaces, or distractions in this episode - just an enthusiastic discussion of a criminally under-appreciated horror film that would make H.P. Lovecraft stand up and cheer (before quickly bowing down in exultation of The Empty Man). Thank God Prior didn't stay faithful to the source material, eh? Here's where to read the article we quote from Film School Rejects, "How David Prior's 'The Empty Man' Survived the Perfect Hollywood Storm." And here's where to read the full review of The Empty Man from RogerEbert.com.

We'll wrap up the conversation by talking about the three films that helped her get through it all.  Special Guest Shea Vassar Writer, filmmaker and host of the Hardcourt Hunnies podcast Follow Shea on Twitter @justsheavassar According to her website, “Shea Vassar is a Cherokee Nation citizen and member of the Native American Journalists Association. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today we talk about the great Marion Davies! One of the most famous starlets of the 1920s and 1930s, Davies' legacy is heavily overshadowed by her pseudo-portrayal in Orson Welles' Citizen Kane. As Amanda Seyfried's impressive turn as Davies in the David Fincher film Mank (which has gotten mixed reviews over at The Film Stage) makes its rounds in the awards circuit, Conor and Dan join forces with the uber-talented film writer Emily Kubincanek to discuss the actress' lesser-known roles. Namely, When Knighthood Was in Flower, The Red Mill, and Cain and Mabel. We talk about the heavy meta-elements of Seyfried playing Davies, the gifts and curses that came with Davies' decades-long relationship with William Randolph Hearst, how When Knight Was in Flower was the Titanic of its time, and the brutal tale of “Fatty” Arbuckle, who directed The Red Mill. Some additional reading if you enjoyed this episode includes Marion Davies: a Biography by Fred Lawrence Guiles, Pauline Kael's searing “Raising Kane” from 1971 (from which Mank takes a lot of inspiration), and Peter Bogdanovich's equally-searing rebuttal: “The Kane Mutiny” from 1972! And speaking of Bogdanovich, we make mention of his film The Cat's Meow, in which Kirsten Dunst portrays Marion Davies. There's also Audrey Fox's great piece on Crooked Marquee entitled, “Beyond Citizen Kane: Getting to Know the Real Marion Davies.” Please be sure to give Emily's work a look, including a great column “Beyond The Classics” on Film School Rejects, as well as an incredibly interesting recent interview with Danny Huston on the 80th anniversary of his father's masterpiece (and debut feature!) The Maltese Falcon. Oh, and she recommends 11 Essential Cary Grant Movies, which everybody should get their eyes on. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide.
