Jay smothers Weird Al with love and appreciation for Al's perfection in his parody. We talk about Mad Magazine, Looney Tunes, pizza, travel, doing what you want, the power of an orchestra, the two pulls of being a comic vs a musician, how a true showman can come out of Linwood, and giving up architecture for being a professional goofball/genius. Bio: FEW WOULD HAVE GUESSED that “Weird Al” Yankovic – who as a shy, accordion-playing teenager got his start sending in homemade tapes to the Dr. Demento Radio Show– would go on to become a pop culture icon and the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time, with classic song and music video parodies such as“Eat It,” “Like a Surgeon,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” “Amish Paradise,” “White & Nerdy” and “Word Crimes.” Now in his fourth decade as America's foremost song parodist, he has been the recipient of numerous awards, including five Grammys® (out of sixteen total nominations) and a string of Gold and Platinum albums. In 2015 and 2016, Weird Al's Mandatory World Tour encompassed 200 shows throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia, including two nights at the Hollywood Bowl and a sold-out gig at New York's Radio City Music Hall. In the spring of 2018, Al performed 77 shows as part of his Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour, where he and his bandmates of over 35 years played setlists composed almost entirely of his original (non-parody) material, and without any of their signature over-the-top theatrics (no costumes, props or video screens). And in 2019 Weird Al followed up his most bare-bones tour with his most extravagant tour ever – Strings Attached – where he and his band were backed for each of their 67 shows by female singers and a full symphony orchestra.Weird Al's 14th studio album, the Grammy® award-winning Mandatory Fun (2014), became the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, and the first to even reach the top of that chart since 1963. Yankovic set the U.S. record on Spotify for having the most tracks from one album in the viral top 10 at one time, taking the top four spots. In addition, “Word Crimes” debuted in the Billboard Top 40, making Al one of only four artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades (the other three being Michael Jackson, Madonna and U2).Al has remained active as a recording artist. June 2017 saw the release of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Dreamworks), for which Al co-wrote and performed the film's theme song. In August 2017, Al wrote and performed “The North Korea Polka (Please Don't Nuke Us)” for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO). In November 2017 Legacy Recordings released Squeeze Box: The Complete Works of “Weird Al” Yankovic, a remastered 15-disc box set (including a rarities album) plus a 120-page book of archival photos, all housed in a replica of Weird Al's trademark accordion. Al also recorded cover versions of the Squidbillies theme for Adult Swim and the Ramones' “Beat on the Brat” for a Dr. Demento compilation album, and produced remixes of two hit singles for Portugal. The Man (“Feel It Still” and “Live in the Moment”). And March 2018 brought us “The Hamilton Polka,” a frantic tour de force mash-up of 14 songs from the Broadway smash, commissioned by Lin-Manuel Miranda himself and released as part of his “Hamildrops” series. In addition to his cult-hit feature film UHF (1989), his late ‘90s CBS Saturday morning series The Weird Al Show and numerous AL-TV specials he has made for MTV and VH1 over the years, Yankovic has remained a staple of film and television, from appearances on The Simpsons, 30 Rock, The Goldbergs and How I Met Your Mother to performing live on the Primetime Emmy Awards and starring in his own concert specials for Disney, VH1 and Comedy Central. In 2015 Yankovic took over as co-host and bandleader for the fifth season of IFC's Comedy Bang! Bang! Currently Al can be heard as the voice of the title character in Disney Channel's animated series Milo Murphy's Law (his other voice acting work includes appearances on Bojack Horseman, Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Wander Over Yonder, and the DC animated feature Batman vs. Robin). Yankovic added “New York Times bestselling author” to his resumé in 2011 with the release of his children's book, When I Grow Up (HarperCollins), followed two years later by My New Teacher and Me! An animated series based on his children's books is currently being developed in partnership with the Jim Henson Company. 2012 saw the release of Weird Al: The Book (Abrams), an illustrated hardcover on Al's life and career, and in 2015 Yankovic became not only MAD Magazine's cover boy, but the first guest editor in their 63-year history. In 2017 NECA Toys released the second in its line of retro-clothed Weird Al action figures, and in 2018 Funko released two of its own POP! vinyl figures. On August 27, 2018, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce awarded “Weird Al” Yankovic with the 2,643rd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Get stoned and listen to this episode at 1:30 in the morning because we're talking about an [adult swim] program for the first time--Squidbillies. Mostly we talk about other stuff though because this was 22 total minutes of television. So a huge chunk of this is about Kermit the Frog.
James Fritz joins us to celebrate our 300th episode. Fritz, "The John Prine of Comedy", started comedy in the great state of Chicago. After ruining his credit score there, he made his way to sunny Los Angeles to absolutely, 100% embrace the relentlessly positive West Coast lifestyle. He was named “Best Stand-up” by the Chicago Reader. The Chicago Tribune called his comedy “a seamless blend of humor, honesty and fearlessness." He was featured at the High Plains Comedy Festival, Bridgetown Comedy Festival, Just For Laughs Chicago, Red Clay Festival, and The Fest in Gainesville. Since moving to LA, he has performed at The Meltdown, Hot Tub with Kurt and Kristen, The Comedy Store, The Hollywood Improv, Dynasty Typewriter, UCB, and co-hosted the beloved east side late night shows Babe Island and Night Coffee. His album Still Together was released by ASpecialThing Records to enthusiastic reviews and he has since worked on Squidbillies and been seen on HBOMax and Adult Swim. He currently works on The Frankie Quinones Show podcast and hopes to one day make enough money to leave the country. (This is a Patreon sample! Subscribe at the $5 tier to gain access to the full episode + all bonus content!) Squidbillies has often been talked about on the podcast, yet never deep-diveified... UNTIL NOW! What makes this very first episode of Squidbillies special is that Squidbillies almost never happened at all. Conceived as just a funny title and not much else, Adult Swim spent over a year trying to get Squids to work... until they nearly gave up on the idea. Dave Willis and Jim Fortier gave it one last go, eventually spawning one of Adult Swim's longest running shows. We get all into this rocky start (and near abandonment), relive some of Jay Edward's and Dave Willis's thoughts on the early days, and comb over Squidbillies S01E01 like we would our orange mullets. ★ Support The Show + Get Extra Episodes • Patreon: patreon.com/dancingisforbidden

Have you ever wanted to see Master Shake trip balls? Yeah? Well, did you also want to see an amazingly bad play? Great, Hypno-Germ is the episode for you! Inspired by a fake logline, Matt and Dave were growing tired of writing for the Teens so they decided to make a play instead. Tim and Eric make their television debut, Fred Armisen enters the world of Adult Swim, Janeane Garofalo masterfully plays a bad actress, and Bob Odenkirk brings tears to all eyes in the house... even his own. The Onion writing staff (Todd Hanson, Chris Karwowski, Carol Kolb, Maria Schneider, and Joe Garden) write sounds with their mouths, crazy style. R. Land helps Shake loss mind. Foam. An incredibly out-of-the-box episode, we see the Aqua Teen team experiment with Macromedia Flash in preparation for Squidbillies. Other topics discussed include Rascal Flatts being from Ohio, Hilary Duff's amazingly bad 2004 film Raise Your Voice, Branson MO, and not pooping in public. Stephen also gets to ask his favorite food related question. Full video Interview will be on our youtube Please sign our petition for a physical release of Adult Swim Yule Log and help spread the word!
On this edition of Parallax Views, Adult Swim, the late night programming block, followed up the Season 6 finale of the popular Rick and Morty with the Adult Swim Yule Log (aka The Fireplace). What started out as a seemingly ordinary yule log video quickly morphed into something more unexpected: a feature-length film. More precisely, a horror movie featuring a cavalcade of genre tropes including UFOs, Satanic cults, murderous rednecks in the vein of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and even a rather devious little imp. Melding humor with comedy, the Adult Swim Yule Log is something that has to be seen to be believed as it's unlike anything you've likely seen before. Joining us on this episode is the Adult Swim Yule Log's writer/director, Casper Kelly. Casper is perhaps best known for his [adult swim] absurdist shorts Final Deployment 4: Queen Battle Walkthrough, the infamous Too Many Cooks, and the TV series Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell starring The Last Podcast on the Left's Henry Zebrowski. Additionally, Casper created the "Cheddar Goblin" sequence for the Nicolas Cage-starring horror movie Mandy and has written for such shows as The Squidbillies and Nickelodeon's CatDog. Oh, and he created the Scooby Doo parody of The Blair Witch Project known as The Scooby Doo Project. Much of Casper's work is available on Youtube and you can check a lot of it out through his website. In this conversation we discuss: - How the feature-length Adult Swim Yule Log came to be - The thematic threads in Casper's work including depression, anxiety, media, and, in the case of the Adult Swim Yule Log, the grappling with the history of American slavery, the idea of "time privilege", and whether we are really progressing as a society or not - Influences on Casper's work; John Carpenter, Sam Raimi and The Evil Dead, David Lynch and Twin Peaks, and the satirical elements of Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers, Robocop, and Showgirls) are all mentioned - New media in Casper's projects (yule log videos and podcasting in the Adult Swim Yule Log and video game streamers in Final Deployment 4: Queen Battle Walkthrough) - Making Too Many Cooks, which plays with the trope of 80s/90s sitcom intros; the research that went into making the short and the way in which the sitcom intro-style is both absurdist and realistic in terms of the kind of shows intros it's satirizing/homaging - The question of whether Casper's works are comedic satire or eerie horror - Working within constraints and how those constraints can actually lead to greater forms of creativity - The difference between working on shows like The Squidbillies and CatDog compared to Casper's projects like Too Many Cooks and the Adult Swim Yule Log - Whether or not Adult Swim has been short thrifted by the way some people write it off as "stoner comedy" content - Horror and comedy as genres which are related to each other - The making of the "Cheddar Goblin" sequence in Mandy - Dealing with the issue of slavery in the plot of the Adult Swim Yule Log - And much, much more!

On today's episode, I talk to TV writer Casper Kelly. Originally from Burlington, North Carolina, Casper started working at Adult Swim in the early 2000s, writing for shows like Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Squidbillies, as well as non-Adult Swim shows like Archer. He's co-created two series, Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell and Stroker and Hoop, as well as the incredible Adult Swim infomercial Too Many Cooks. In addition to his TV work, Casper is a wonderful short story writer, and his book More Stories About Spaceships and Cancer is very much worth your time! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
Paul Vato & CiTRic (tune in if you want to know the origin story of CiTRiC's nickname) reconnect and discuss Anthony's storied career, from troubled gang banger, to rap artist to actor in Hollywood. Anthony & Paul discuss what it's really like to work with George Lopez & why taking a Greyhound bus from LA to Las Vegas is a HORRIBLE idea! Campos was born and raised in Boyle Heights, a predominantly Latino neighborhood in East LA. As a child, Anthony was impressed with performers such as Michael Jackson & John Travolta, & dreamed of becoming a performer one day. Inspired by Latino hip-hop artists Kid Frost & Mellow Man Ace, Anthony started performing with the hip-hop group Brown Town Looters in the 1990s. The group played at local venues and eventually landed a record deal with an independent label. When one of their singles became a huge hit in Japan, Anthony & the group had the privilege of traveling to Japan to headline the annual Japan Lowrider Super Show. Throughout the 90s, Anthony continued to book background roles as thugs, gang members and prisoners, & was ultimately “discovered” by Mike Judge. A casting director saw a photo of Anthony on a website promoting his music and tracked him down to audition for a role in Judge's new film “Idiocracy.” Although he had no acting experience, other than gigs as a background actor, Anthony booked the job & unleashed his huge comedy chops when he played the hilarious & memorable role of Secretary of Defense in the film. Since that time, Anthony has appeared in numerous films & TV shows, including the film “Harsh Times” with Christian Bale & Eva Longoria & the TV comedy series “Silicon Valley” on HBO. He has also performed voiceover services for characters on comedies such as “King of the Hill” & “Squidbillies. Paul Vato is an on camera and voice actor, improvisor, podcaster and entrepreneur. We didn't have a plan in mind, but somehow we ended up giving each other cartoons directed by Tex Avery and Chuck Jones. That sounds like a theme! For the Tex part of our program, we'll watch the great baritone Poochini get harassed by Mysto the magician as he tries to sing an opera song, and we'll see what people in 1949 thought their house would be like in 2050, when humanity has finally figured out how to deal with the mother-in-law. Then we shift to the Chuck part of the show, where Bugs Bunny tangles with knights, dragons and sorcerers, and where a depressed Martian figures that 1960's Earth must be the happiest place in the universe, if only it wasn't beset by monsters. Plus, Matsy will eulogize Squidbillies, and Micah will review numerous movies. And as a special bonus, we look at the climax of Hilda, namely the movie Hilda and the Mountain King. Put on your headphones and listen in. Just be aware that the headphones might be a noose if you're anyone's mother-in law. Cartoons in this episode: "Magical Maestro" "Knight-mare Hare" "The House of Tomorrow" "Martian Through Georgia"
The Mighty Manfred's guest this week is Elizabeth Cook, singer, songwriter and DJ on our sister station Outlaw Country Siriusxm 60. She tells us about her life in the music business, growing up in a musical family and voicing Tammi on Adult Swim's Squidbillies. Her song “Thick Georgia Woman” is our Coolest Song in the World this week! Join Mighty Manfred and Elizabeth Cook in this week's Coolest Conversation, presented by Hard Rock
It's a random mix this week! We'll watch a young rabbit try to make his fortune by saving frogs inside a seashell. Apparently this is a lucrative career. Then we'll watch Daffy Duck track down the grotesque villains who swiped his piggy bank. I'm not sure if this is a lucrative career. Next, we watch some police potatoes get to the bottom of a carrot kidnapping. This is not a lucrative career (d'oh!) ...unless you're crooked (woohoo!). And finally, we'll watch Roger Rabbit babysit a babe in the woods. I think this career might actually cost more than you'd earn. Matsy will also check in on how Squidbillies is doing without an actual ignorant redneck in its cast, while Micah opens the floor to discussion about plot points and plot holes that make us angry! Rar! Cartoons in this episode: "Seaside Adventure" "The Great Piggy Bank Robbery" "The Fresh Vegetable Mystery" "Trail Mix-Up"
This weekend on the show the gang is all here and we have a great interview with Dave Willis. Dave Willis is an American voice actor, writer, producer and musician. We get to hear Meatwad's order at Hardee's and Carl talks about the New York Giants. And much more.
