An Interview with Cory Kidd the CEO of Catalia Health, Catalia is the type of company that is leading the MedTech revolution in our health care system by incorporating AI, Machine Learning and actual robots. The Catalia Health platform tailors conversations to each patient to obtain the hard-to-get data about treatment, challenges, and outcomes daily. The Mabu wellness coach, which is the robot communicating with the patient, is the key to long-term patient engagement to enhance outcomes and improve dialog with the patient. The Conversations actually evolve so that the interaction between Mabu and the patient becomes personalized. Incredible.
Our first episode spotlights Cory Kidd, MS, PhD: AI expert and founder & CEO of Catalia Health, a chronic disease care management company. In seeking to generate patient behavior change through a fusion of technology and psychology. Kidd’s work provides patients & care providers with a voice-activated AI-based robot that delivers care guidance and transmits relevant health information, offering an interactive care management solution for the almost 50% of the U.S. population impacted by chronic conditions. Kidd’s technology emphasizes the aspect of patient care that occurs subsequent to the clinic—moving beyond pharmaceuticals, procedures, and devices. Listen to the interview for an exclusive perspective featuring one of the primary experts in AI & robotics in healthcare, and hear from both Dr. Kidd and a special guest as he discusses how he brought a technological invention to market.
Dr. Cory Kidd, founder and CEO of Catalia Health, delivers an informative discussion on chronic disease healthcare management and the benefits of using robots that are tailored to a particular patient's needs to help them manage their conditions. With over two decades of experience in healthcare technology focused on innovations and solutions to major healthcare challenges, Dr. Kidd is uniquely qualified to make an impact in the patient/user experience. He has successfully launched other health and tech oriented companies as a veteran of the industry. Dr. Kidd received a M.S. and Ph.D. at the MIT Media Lab, specializing in human-robot interaction. His primary objective while there was to demonstrate how there were obvious clinical, as well as psychological, advantages to using physical robots instead of traditional screen-based methods. While the front end allows for easy patient interfacing, the back end flows to doctors and health professionals who are working to monitor the overall progress of these chronic care patients. From arthritis to kidney issues and more, Catalia Health's robotic tech products deliver outstanding results for patient and doctor. As the health technology CEO explains, the robot elicits a stronger long-term engagement with patients. The fact that the robot actually looks at you creates a much deeper psychological connection with patients, which drives them to be more involved with their own health and the management of their condition over long periods of time. Catalia Health's robots (know individually as Mabu) are built on a set of artificial intelligence algorithms that draw on psychology to form the conversations with patients. As it is not scripted, but interaction based, the experience feels interactive and real, and, ironically, more human. Much like a physician tailors the needed medical information and delivers it in a way that is best suited for an individual, Catalia Health's robots also interact and respond with patients in a manner that creates a comfortable experience. Catalia Health's platform‘s integrated technology learns about a patient's overall personality, and their interests, as well as any particular treatment difficulties or challenges they have had over time. This enables the Mabu robot to engage in conversations that are unique to each patient, based on established behavioral models of psychology designed to promote significant behavioral change for improved well-being. As Mabu communicates daily, patients are much more likely to manage their treatment better. Dr. Kidd gives a detailed analysis on the topics of symptoms, side effects, and psychosocial issues, which are three major components of the AI based care management. And as the old modified proverb says, the proof is in the pudding, and this is certainly evidenced by Catalia Health's data from their experimentation and market testing. In multiple testing situations in which three groups of patients were told to use either the paper log system to record and manage their care, the Catalia Health software on a computer, or the system integrated into an actual robot, the robot was strongly preferred, by far. Some people even tried to negotiate to keep their test robot longer, which is about as glowing an endorsement as you could hope for. The robots clearly have won.
Leveraging on cutting edge technology to solve some of the challenges in healthcare
Dr. Cory Kidd, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Catalia Health, who holds a PhD in human-robot interaction from the MIT Media Lab, discusses how robotics and artificial intelligence are advancing aging and chronic disease management. Cory shares how his company’s solving real world healthcare challenges with interactive technologies. Cory Kidd PhD Founder and CEO Catalia Health has been exploring the use of robots and artificial intelligence for improving healthcare for over 20 years. He and his team have taken on the challenge of figuring out why people don't stay with a drug regimen for chronic conditions. Using the robot Mabu, they are able to personalize the interaction with patients to encourage healthier habits and gather data about barriers to adherence. @CoryK @CataliaHealth #robot #AI #Heartfailure Catalia Health
Catalia Health Founder and CEO Cory Kidd, PhD, who has spent two decades working at the intersection of healthcare and technology, explains the power of Mabu, an electronic healthcare assistant.
I remember reading an article in Scientific American years ago about a poster of a person looking in the direction people sitting in a school dining room, and that this poster would make people sitting in the dining room less likely to litter. This seems like an absurd example of holding people accountable for their actions, but as it turns out, there are a lot more serious consequences to ensuring behavior change through observation, and one area where this matters is medicine. Today, there's a major issue with people who don't adhere to their medical regimens, only to relapse or experience more serious symptoms later on. This week's guest, Cory Kidd, CEO of Catalia Health and known for his work at MIT on human-robotic interaction, is working to help solve this problem by developing a robot that adds some of that physical presence and accountability. This is likely one of many novel medical AI applications that we're likely to see roll out in healthcare over the next decade.
A great podcast with Cory Kidd, the Founder and CEO of Catalia Health, creator of a personal healthcare companion robot.
In episode 45 I have a fascinating conversation with Cory Kidd PhD, who shares his story of creating Mabu, the amazing robotic health care companion who is making friends everywhere. Cory is the founder and CEO of Catalia Health, a healthcare technology company focused on delivering effective behavioral change. Cory is a serial entrepreneur who has been working in healthcare technology for nearly two decades. He received his M.S. and Ph.D at the MIT Media Lab in human-robot interaction and he received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at the Georgia institute of technology. Cory answers the following questions: How did you come to create Catalia health and Mabu? Why Mabu? How did you come up with that name? What can Mabu can do? How does Mabu learn and process information? What kind of information can she provide a patient? Is there any way to communicate with Mabu if you are away from home? Does Mabu always take on a female persona and if so, why? Does Mabu speak any foreign languages? So patients are sharing a lot of personal and confidential information to Mabu. What happens to the information obtained by Mabu? Is it safe? How have users responded to living with Mabu? What has been your biggest surprise from people interacting with Mabu? How much does Mabu costs and how can somebody get one? Do you have any active studies going on with Mabu? If so, how can somebody interested sign up? What do you see as the future for Mabu and artificial intelligence in medicine and patient care? Where can people go to get more information and to contact you? Resources Mentioned by Dr. Kidd: Autom - Cory's research project at MIT Catalia Health - Cory Kidd is the founder and CEO of Catalia Health, which is developing Mabu. On tonight's show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy learn all about the dangers of toxins in everyday products like cosmetics and plastics from award winning investigative reporter Mark Schapiro. Mark has been investigating environmental and international issues for over 20 years. His work has been featured in: Harper's, The Nations, NOW with Bill Moyers, FRONTLINE and NPR. In 2007 he wrote Exposed, a book that compares the proactive governmental policies of the European Union when it comes to environment, safety and health to the the more reactive policies of the US. Mark explained that in the United States their are no government regulators checking to see if there are any toxins in products such as cosmetics and plastics. In Europe that is not the case. The European Union have oversight over cosmetics and they have compiled a list of dangerous ingredients that are not allowed in cosmetics. Sadly in the US cosmetics sold here are filled with carcinogens that are banned in Europe. For more information about Mark, his investigative reporting and his new book Exposed, please go to his website www.centerforinvestigativereporting.org We started the show with Matt Bryzcki, Fitness Expert from Princeton University. Matt comes on each month and dispels some of the strength training and exercise myths that get spread around the internet. Tonight he went after body builders. A lot of super buff looking body builders have websites that give out a lot of bad information about losing weight and getting in shape. For instance Matt shared a story about one body builder who started smoking to lose weight for his competition. He then started eating baby food in an effort to consume more potassium (he never heard of bananas, I guess). Matt is almost finished with his new book about Youth Fitness called Youth Fitness: An Action Plan for Shaping America's Kids. He also talked about some of the books and magazines that influenced him. Next we had Dr David Dahlman, author of the book Why Doesn't My Doctor Know This? Dr. Dahlman, is a Chiropractor with a degree in Nutrition, became the Director of The Hyde Park Holistic Center in order to educate patients that there are alternatives to traditional medical care. Treating a variety of chronic health conditions from a nutritional and herbal perspective, his understanding of the importance of the gastrointestinal system to human health forms the basis of most treatment protocols. Because of this focus, he has developed his remarkably successful treatment for any uncomfortable symptoms associated with the gastrointestinal system. Whether irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's or any form of colitis), Dr. Dahlman's treatment protocol has eliminated all symptoms in a vast majority of his patients. Dr. Dahlman's treatments are patient-centered and focus on finding the cause of the patient's complaints. The treatments use all-natural supplements; they do not use dangerous drugs that only suppress symptoms and carry the risk of significant side effects. On the show Dr Dahlman emphasized the importance of eliminating all dairy if you are afflicted with any of the GI problems. His website is filled with lots of great information, as well as his book so check it out www.drdahlman.com We closed the show with one of the smartest people we have ever met Dr Cory Kidd, inventor of Autom, the world's first robotic weight loss coach. They asked us to create a Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy "Wellness Minute." So now a new Wellness Minute runs on that station each morning at around 7:40. Each Wellness Minute features the doctor and I going over 5 of his best tips on a given wellness subject like: losing weight, getting in shape, living a healthy lifestyle, etc. We're working on ways to make those tips available to all our listeners. If you have a favorite radio station that you think would benefit from our Wellness Minutes send them an email telling them about it and who knows maybe you can hear us everyday too. Also once again, I need you to please do me a favor. My kid Max has been doing a radio show called "Kid Power Radio" for awhile now and you should check it out. Tiffany from The Daily Candy called his family friendly radio show "Hilarious!" This is a great show for your kids. It is kind of like a kids version of David Spade's "Showbiz Show" on Comedy Central or Entertainment Tonight mixed in with a little Wayne's World. Max recaps the week in entertainment and gives his take and review of what he liked and didn't like on TV, at the movies, video games, in books and in music and even restaurant reviews. Please go to his site and download the show for your kid. He had a big show recently he interviewed Meatwad from Aqua Teen Hunger Force on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. And if your kid sends Max an email he'll read it on the air next week. The show can be found at www.kidpowerradio.com and you can email Max at RadioStarMax at Yahoo.com. He has gotten emails from kids from England, Australia, China and even the US. Your encouragement is greatly appreciated. Thanks to you his show is rocketing up the charts!!!
