This is a "Shortcut" episode. It's a shortened version of this week's more detailed full episode, which is also available on our feed. In episode #342 of Australian True Crime, we met a man named Glen Fisher, who told us about the abuse he suffered in a so-called youth refuge in 1980s Kings Cross. The place in question was called the "Homeless Children's Association Refuge", and it was run by one Simon Davies. In 2022, Simon Davies was convicted of historical child sex offences against two boys in 1980s. One of those boys was Glen Fisher. After that episode was published, we were contacted by a woman named Marie, who said she had more information about that story which she would like to share. Marie's life has been an odyssey, to say the least. As you'll hear though, she comes from a very different background to the boys who ended up at the Homeless Children's Association Refuge. We contacted the Australian Privacy Foundation (founded by Simon Davies) for comment, and you can see our correspondence with them on our Facebook page.Click here to purchase Glen Fisher's book "Predators Paradise".You can also find him on social media here. For Support: The Blue Knot FoundationLifeline on 13 11 1413 YARN on 13 92 76 (24/7 crisis support phone line for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples)1800RESPECT: 1800 737 732CREDITS:Host: Meshel Laurie. Growing one's network is a common theme in many of our interviews. We probably will not find a more connected person in the international schooling community than Laura Light!Laura is the current Executive Director of The Association for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE), which she joined in September 2021. She brings to AAIE many years of experience working alongside school heads and senior leadership, supporting the most critical task of recruiting teachers and administrative talent. Before joining AAIE, Laura was known in the international school world for her leadership and dedication as the Director of Global Recruitment at International Schools Services (ISS). Before joining ISS in 2007, Laura was an international educator for many years, teaching in Kuwait, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Singapore, and London, as well as in Oregon, California, and New York. Her knowledge of international schools is deeply rooted in her upbringing as she is also a Third Culture Kid. Laura has served on the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children (ICMEC) Educational Board and is a member of the Diversity Collaborative. She understands the challenges faced, has an enviable network of longstanding relationships, and, already knowing so many in the international community, is a natural community builder and an assertive advocate for quality leadership in our international schools worldwide. Laura greatly enjoys her work supporting international school leaders and values the interactions and experiences she encounters while traveling. Who is responsible for ensuring access to clean potable water? In an urbanizing planet beset by climate change, cities are facing increasingly arid conditions and a precarious water future. In Well Connected: Everyday Water Practices in Cairo (Johns Hopkins UP, 2023), anthropologist Tessa Farmer details how one community in Cairo, Egypt, has worked collaboratively to adapt the many systems required to facilitate clean water in their homes and neighborhoods. As a community that was originally not included in Cairo's municipal systems, the residents of Ezbet Khairallah built their own potable water and wastewater infrastructure. But when the city initiated a piped sewage removal system, local residents soon found themselves with little to no power over their own water supply or wastewater removal. Throughout this transition, residents worked together to collect water at the right times to drink, bathe, do laundry, cook, and clean homes. These everyday practices had deep implications for the health of community members, as they struggled to remain hydrated, rid their children of endemic intestinal worms, avoid consuming water contaminated with sewage, and mediate the impact of fluctuating water quality. Farmer examines how the people of Cairo interact with one another, with the government, and with social structures in order to navigate the water systems (and lack thereof) that affect their day-to-day lives. Farmer's extensive ethnographic fieldwork during the implementation of the Governorate of Cairo's septic system shines through in the compelling stories of community members. Well Connected taps into the inherent sociality of water through social contacts, moral ideology, interpersonal relationships, domestic rhythms, and the everyday labor of connecting. Tessa Farmer is Associate Professor at the University of Virginia in the Anthropology Department and the program in Global Studies, where she directs the Global Studies–Middle East & South Asia track within the Global Studies major. Alize Arıcan is a Society of Fellows Postdoctoral Scholar at Boston University, focusing on urban renewal, futurity, care, and migration. There are supernatural forces trying to destroy you! Yesterday we overheard Jesus in the Upper Room revealing the new connection the Disciples were about to have with each other. And He warned that they were about to experience the hostility of the world - a hatred originating in the Prince of this World. Today Pastor Jim will continue to talk about those new relationships, and one more. We're in the Gospel of John. Listen to Right Start Radio every Monday through Friday on WCVX 1160AM (Cincinnati, OH) at 9:30am, WHKC 91.5FM (Columbus, OH) at 5:00pm, WRFD 880AM (Columbus, OH) at 9:00am. Which is harder: dying well, or living well? We spent some time recently on the important - and fairly neglected - topic of "The Art of Dying Well." We listened to the great Master of that art as he taught His students in the Upper Room. In that same class session Jesus gave valuable instructions for living well. It was a pivotal moment for both the Lord and His Disciples. Let's open our ears to what some would call the more difficult part of the lesson. Here's Jim to begin our new series. We are living with a viral pandemic, but also a mental health pandemic for our teenagers. What is going on? And how can we leverage our family dynamics to make things as easy for our kids as possible? In this episode, we discuss... As parents, we are already under so much pressure to be perfect – how can we see this differently, with less guilt and shame? We often talk about technology as the root of the rise in teenage mental health problems. Where do stand on this school of thought? It's hard to disagree that a healthy family offers protective factors that, as you say, can be the buffer against mental illness. How do we change the relationships in our families? If the family needs to change, and change is so hard for everyone, is there more turmoil first before it gets better? What if some change faster than others? Isn't that hard for everyone if the change isn't at the same pace? Would you say that we ever arrive at a point of no return? When it's too late to change the family dynamic? Lesson 7 - To Live in Deed With Mrs. Leah Sollish (Recorded live at the Intown Jewish Academy on April 9, 2022) From birth, to marriage, to death, and beyond, Jewish traditions mark the contours of our lives. If there isn't a Kaddish, there's a Kiddush, bat mitzvah, or chupah... Here, we survey the key life cycle rituals so as to more deeply appreciate their significance—that of the rituals, and of the life events they are associated with. Not just an accompaniment, these practices mold our major life steps and give us language to celebrate or to commemorate. Even more, they work to complete the soul's journey on earth.

Lesson 6 - The Kinds of Kindness With Mrs. Leah Sollish (Recorded live at the Intown Jewish Academy on April 4, 2022) Sure it's nice to be nice, but sometimes you need specifics. Rather than relying on vague ethical pronouncements, the Torah gets into the nitty-gritty and ensures that we express our love in the concrete, with commandments like giving charity, hosting guests in the home, comforting the bereaved, and returning lost property. Beyond simply studying how to properly perform these action mitzvot, this class presents them in a new light, making us rethink the general nature of the ethical obligations we bear toward our fellow human.

Lesson 5 - Pray It Forward With Mrs. Dena Schusterman (Recorded live at the Intown Jewish Academy on March 7, 2022) Prayer feels like it should be a genuinely spiritual experience, but the foreign language, the rigid text, and the fixed times for the services can threaten to turn the whole thing into a perfunctory drudgery. By studying the various elements of the liturgy, with a special focus on the meditations of Shema, we'll uncover the possibilities of prayer, and how prayer can be a joyful, soulful, spontaneous experience: open the prayer book, express your spiritual self, and connect!
