As Yugoslavia began to break down, the Balkans conflict began - a series of brutal wars characterised by disputes over territory, identity, and ethnic divisions. In 1991, the Croatian War of Independence started – the first of the major wars. One of its defining moments came in October, when the Yugoslav People's Army advanced on the south of the country leading to the Siege of Dubrovnik. One of the Yugoslav People's Army commanders in the region was Rear Admiral Krsto Đurović, a Montenegrin who had spent his life working in Croatia, married a Croatian and planned to retire to the country. Attacking Dubrovnik was unthinkable for the Rear Admiral, and he promised the city's major: “As long as I am the commander, not a single shell will fall on Dubrovnik."Shortly afterwards he was killed in a suspicious helicopter crash – his superiors claimed he was shot down, but there were no opposition forces in the area, and Croatian officials denied any part in the crash. There was never an autopsy and no military investigation. Soon after, Miodrag Jokic was appointed Đurović's replacement, and a vicious bombing campaign began which would later see Jokic convicted of war crimes. Johnny I'Anson speaks to Montenegrin journalist Veseljko Koprivica, and documentary maker Mladen Ivanovic who say Rear Admiral Đurović's refusal to bomb Dubrovnik may have led to his untimely death. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. After the Second World War Yugoslavia and its six republics were unified under the communist rule of Josip Broz Tito. But by the early 1990s it all came undone. More than 100,000 people were killed in the Yugoslav wars for independence, many through deliberate campaigns of ethnic cleansing. What happened? Why did Serbs, Bosnian Muslims, and Croats descend into civil war? And what role exactly did UN peacekeepers have to play during an on-going war? Episode four of "Forgotten War" explores the history of the Yugoslav wars for independence along with guest Sandra Perron. She was Canada's first female infantry officer and deployed to both Bosnia and Croatia. Perron explains the difficulty of being a peacekeeper "when there is no peace to keep," the ethnic tensions that exploded throughout the region, and the personal battle she had within a military that wasn't ready to accept women in combat roles. Welcome to the final episode for this semester with Dr. Sandra Penic, senior researcher at the Departement of Political Science and International Relations as well as the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences at the University of Geneva. In this conversation we're diving into all things emotions: anger, hope, fear, empathy, hate and solidarity – and how and why we can experience them collectively. Emotions have been underlying many of our conversations here on the podcast, especially when talking about populism and the us vs. them discourse in our western democracies, so we're really thrilled to have an expert to give us context on the role that emotions play in our societies and international relations more broadly speaking. Sandra Penic reminds us that hate is neither inevitable nor natural and that we're all responsible to foster solidarity as a norm and she calls upon politicians to acknowledge the collective resilience in our societies, that need though to be accompanied by policies that support people to be in fact respectful of covid-measures (not everyone has the means). This conversation provides insights from a heap of research, amongst others on the War in the Former Yugoslavia, which our guest experienced as a child. Dr. Sandra Penic completed her diploma in (social) psychology at the university of Zagreb and got her PhD in 2014 on “collective victimization and collective guilt in the former Yugoslavia” at the University of Lausanne. Before joining UNIGE, she worked on a large interdisciplinary multi-method research project on collective memories in conflict-torn societies called the Pluralistic Memories Project. She has published extensively on collective violence and its impact on people's attitudes and emotions as well as the role of conflict memories in the processes of conflict transformation most notably, in the former Yugoslavia, Palestine, Burundi and Sri Lanka. Amongst other things, Dr Sandra Penic teaches the BARI-course on emotions and international relations. We hope you learn as much from the conversation as we did and feel inspired to collectively fight for a better world! Thank you to all of you listening for your time and interest throughout this whole season and do send us any feedback you have over on Instagram @bariscope_ccc. Stay critically curious, Lea & Lukas ----- (02:49) - what are emotions and are there such things as « universal emotions »? (10:13) - What are the predictors for experiencing collective emotions? (13:17) - How do groups and social identities form? (18:48) - We've seen violent episodes throughout human history, where hate is so strong between groups that it leads to mass violence. Is hate an inevitable or even natural emotion for humans to feel? (24:20) - What are the conditions for hate to become the prevalent emotion within a group? How hate is mobilised and violence is legitimised. (31:37) - How did interethnic hatred in the Former Yugoslavia go from myth to reality? (36:59) - On Sandra Penic's childhood experience during the Croatian War (as a refugee), how her city is divided by ethnicity today and why she got interested in social psychology. (41:09) - Sandra Penic's evaluation of the emotional landscape in our society right now and why humans are not antisocial during crisis. An introduction into collective resilience. (45:39) - Can societies be collectively resilient for two or three years (as in throughout the whole pandemic)? What determines if a society is collectively resilient over a long period of time? (48:23) - The psychological burden during our current crisis and what for policies should be adopted to allow people to respect the covid-measures (spoiler: comprehensive support packages). Excerpt from the introduction to my newest book "Willing: Doing Whatever It Takes". Speeding down that train track, I questioned how God could call me and anoint me for this ministry. I had been struggling with those thoughts for several days. Holy Spirit began a conversation in my heart as I watched the Croatian countryside. Standing alone in the hallway, looking out the windows, Holy Spirit's voice became a little stronger and clearer. “You were not My first choice.” His words shocked me at first. “I had called others with more noted ministries and who are more gifted than you. They would not go. They would not come and do this ministry. There was not enough notoriety. I chose you because you are willing.” I stood there amazed and humbled. Today's podcast is a little different than my usual podcast. In today's podcast, my daughter interviews me about my latest book Willing: Doing Whatever It takes. Willing is a biographical story of God miraculously working through the life of an ordinary man who is willing to go any where and accept any ministry assignment no matter how insignificant, as long as he has the assurance, God is calling Him. The story follows him from an abusive boyhood through his senior years, sharing his amazing conversion experience and his call to Christian ministry. Amazing events took place in his ministry from Montana to Canada, behind the Iron Curtain, in the Pacific Northwest, and even during the Croatian War of Independence. Every miraculous event is authentic and not fiction. Biblical principles and precepts are illustrated for living a dedicated life to Jesus Christ in the home or in the business community. The protests and riots following the killing of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer have made many people question, why is it we have a hard time getting along with people who are different from ourselves? What is the driving force behind the conflicts we've seen these last few weeks? Theologians will say that at the root of all our problems is sin. But surely there's more to it than that. Nearly 30 years ago Dr. Miroslav Volf wrote a book that explored the vagaries of our mistrust and malevolent actions towards our fellow human beings. The book is called "Exclusion & Embrace: A Theological Exploration of Identity, Otherness, and Reconciliation." It could have been written about what's happened today, but he wrote it for himself following the Croatian War in the 1990's, and the violence, destruction and killing that occurred between people who were once neighbors. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Volf, the Director of the Yale Center for Faith & Culture, explains how the book came about; that he was asked after a lecture he gave if he could forgive the soldiers who murdered and destroyed his community. He answered truthfully that his faith said, "I must," but that his heart said, "I can't." This is our dilemma today. While civil authorities work to create new laws to try to restore a semblance of order and protect citizens from rogue cops and systemic injustices, people like Dr. Volf are calling for us to find a path to reconciliation, a path that begins with all of us seeing first how our own identities can unknowingly exclude people we are called to love, and embrace.

A water tower stands tall over the city of Vukovar, still bearing the scars of Croatia's trauma. As Yugoslavia collapses, Croatia stands firm against Serbian aggression, both from Serbia itself and the Serbian-Croats within its borders. Ethnic tension runs at an all time high, and it soon becomes clear to the world this war will not be as quick as Slovenia's Ten-Day War. Both the Croats and Serbs are equally determined to cement their self-preservation, and are equally willing to resort to extreme violence. Aside from the conventional warfare measures, the Croat and Serb forces will resort to the worst methods possible in an effort to achieve their goals in the first examples of ethnic cleansing in Europe since the Second World War. Sadly, the Croatian War of Independence was only a prologue to the horrors we still can't begin to comprehend.   Please note: At almost exactly 1 hour in, the audio messed up, hense why the quality momentarily faulters.   Intro: Sean Murray, Fountain (from Call of Duty: World at War) Outro: Philanthrope, Things Fall Apart

Sara Nović's Girl at War has all the confidence and impact of a firsthand account, despite the fact that it was written almost entirely from secondhand accounts. Detailing one girl's experience in the early 90s Croatian War of Independence and her life in America afterward, it's a compelling account of internal and external conflict from a character who has two homes and doesn't quite belong in either.
