It's News Day Tuesday on the Majority Report On today's show: It's election day in Tennessee's 7th Congressional District, and if you live there, make sure you get out and vote for Aftyn Behn. Aftyn Behn highlights the contrast between her public, open-to-all campaign events and those of her opponent, Matt Van Epps, who has been hosting gatherings behind locked gates at his mansion. Donald Trump calls into a rally with a last-minute pitch for Matt Van Epps, claiming that Behn "hates Christianity." Aftyn appears on NewsNation to make her final case, pledging to protect Medicaid, Medicare, and ACA subsidies, and to fight the affordability crisis facing her district. Jasper Nathaniel, publisher of Infinite Jaz on Substack joins Sam and Emma to provide an update on his return from reporting in the West Bank. In the Fun Half: Pete Hegseth is passing the buck over to his Rear Admiral as he denies ordering the strikes even though he said on Fox News in September that he was watching the strike live as it went down. Chris Murphy believes that at the very least Pete Hegseth committed a war crime but more likely he just committed plain, old murder. JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon says that they are not interested in contributing to the White House ballroom over concerns of how the next DOJ will feel about the pay-to-play behavior in the Trump administration. Trump went on a manic posting spree on Truth Social late last night. Posing hundreds of times over the course of two hours. As a result of Trump's late night scrolling he is left exhausted and falling asleep at a meeting. During the meeting he woke up to declare affordability a "democrat scam" On Democracy Now, Spencer Akerman makes the point that the Afghani shooter was turned into a child soldier by the CIA when he was 14. In discussion of the murder of the National Guard, the PBD crew continue their mission of finding the dumbest possible take on any issue. Andrew Cuomo complains that Curtis Sliwa cost him the election despite the fact that Zohran won over 50% of the vote. All that and more. The Congress switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. Rear Admiral (Ret.) Mark Montgomery is the Senior Director of the Center on Cyber and Technology Innovation at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. He spent 32 years in the Navy as a nuclear-trained surface warfare officer, retiring as a rear admiral in 2017. After leaving the Navy, Admiral Montgomery worked as policy director for the Senate Armed Services Committee during Senator John McCain's chairmanship, and as Executive Director of the Cyberspace Solarium Commission, a congressionally created commission directed to “develop a consensus on a strategic approach to defending the United States in cyberspace against cyber attacks of significant consequences.” In this episode, Lawfare Book Review Editor Jonathan Cedarbaum sits down with Admiral Montgomery to discuss the fifth annual implementation report prepared by the Cyberspace Solarium Commission 2.0, which assesses how the federal government has done over the last year in implementing the Solarium Commission's recommendations for strengthening the United States' cybersecurity posture. The report, whose lead author was Admiral Montgomery, concludes that "[o]ur nation's ability to protect itself and its allies from cyber threats is stalling and, in several areas, slipping." They discuss the scope and impacts of the Trump administration funding and staffing cuts in leading agencies responsible for cybersecurity; the weakening of public-private collaboration, including the closing of the Critical Infrastructure Partnership Advisory Council; and the weakening of recruitment efforts to build the cyber workforce the country needs. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. Would our troops be used to quell demonstrations in the United States with force? Seeing crowds in Washington, D.C., during the George Floyd riots in 2020, Trump is reported to have asked "Can't we just shoot them?"  How do we answer the question as to whether the current administration will have U.S. troops fire on the crowds? We will look at the Constitution, especially the 10th Amendment, the Insurrection Act of 1807, and the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878. We will review some history where the military has been used domestically to safeguard civil rights marchers, intervene when requested by governors during violent riots, to stop the Bonus March on Washington in 1932, and to imprison Japanese civilians during World War II. We will also define who is in today's military, where do they come from, how do they line up politically—and would they follow an illegal order and fire on unarmed civilian demonstrators or support a government coup? This is concerning, says Dr. Michael Baker, given the militarization of ICE agents and the deployment of National Guard troops and the Marines to Los Angeles for specious reasons. About the Speaker Dr. Michael Baker recently retired from a 40-year career in general, vascular and trauma surgery. He also served 30 years in the uniform of his country and retired with the rank of Rear Admiral and has numerous kudos, including 3 Legion of Merit Awards, the Combat Action Ribbon, and River and Coastal Patrol Officer-in-Charge warfare pin. What happens when political pressure infiltrates military justice? Navy veteran Darin Lopez and retired Navy SEAL Keith Barry pull back the curtain on one of the most troubling chapters in modern military history - a period when false accusations could destroy careers without meaningful due process.Lopez, who held high-level intelligence positions requiring FBI clearance, found himself convicted of sexual assault despite overwhelming evidence of his innocence. The shocking details of his case reveal a system where truth became irrelevant - military prosecutors were explicitly instructed to pursue charges "even if the elements cannot be proven" merely to demonstrate being "tough on sexual assault." Barry, whose conviction was eventually overturned, shares how a Rear Admiral later admitted in writing that he believed in Barry's innocence but approved the conviction anyway due to political pressure.Together, these veterans expose the devastating human cost of unlawful command influence (UCI) that corrupted military courts between 2012-2014. Their stories highlight a disturbing reality: in a rush to correct legitimate problems with sexual assault reporting, the military created a different injustice that continues to affect thousands of service members today. This powerful conversation isn't about diminishing genuine sexual assault cases - both men emphasize their support for legitimate victims. Rather, it illuminates how abandoning due process harms everyone. The military's 2023 creation of an Independent Office to reduce UCI represents a tacit admission of past wrongs, but does nothing for those still carrying convictions or serving sentences. For anyone concerned about military justice, veteran welfare, or the intersection of politics and law, this episode provides rare insight into a largely hidden injustice. If you've faced false accusations or know someone who has, you'll find valuable resources and a supportive community ready to help. How the Largest Case of UCI in Military History Unfolded:  https://tinyurl.com/bdf63v5dBuy Darin's book: https://a.co/d/062h77N False Accusations: https://www.theresatapestries.com/false-accusationsSupport the showVisit my website: https://thehello.llc/THERESACARPENTERRead my writings on my blog: https://www.theresatapestries.com/Listen to other episodes on my podcast: https://storiesofservice.buzzsprout.comWatch episodes of my podcast:https://www.youtube.com/c/TheresaCarpenter76

As Yugoslavia began to break down, the Balkans conflict began - a series of brutal wars characterised by disputes over territory, identity, and ethnic divisions. In 1991, the Croatian War of Independence started – the first of the major wars. One of its defining moments came in October, when the Yugoslav People's Army advanced on the south of the country leading to the Siege of Dubrovnik. One of the Yugoslav People's Army commanders in the region was Rear Admiral Krsto Đurović, a Montenegrin who had spent his life working in Croatia, married a Croatian and planned to retire to the country. Attacking Dubrovnik was unthinkable for the Rear Admiral, and he promised the city's major: “As long as I am the commander, not a single shell will fall on Dubrovnik."Shortly afterwards he was killed in a suspicious helicopter crash – his superiors claimed he was shot down, but there were no opposition forces in the area, and Croatian officials denied any part in the crash. There was never an autopsy and no military investigation. Soon after, Miodrag Jokic was appointed Đurović's replacement, and a vicious bombing campaign began which would later see Jokic convicted of war crimes. Johnny I'Anson speaks to Montenegrin journalist Veseljko Koprivica, and documentary maker Mladen Ivanovic who say Rear Admiral Đurović's refusal to bomb Dubrovnik may have led to his untimely death. Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Rear Admiral Đurović. S32 Ep3: Rear Admiral Brian Luther - Leadership in the Face of Chaos: Preparing your team for the unexpected

Today, Steve is speaking with Rear Admiral Brian Luther. After more than 30 years in the US Navy and at the Pentagon, Brian is now president and CEO of the insurance firm Navy Mutual. Brian talks about what he learned about leadership in his time commanding an aircraft carrier in the Navy and how he has translated his skills into working in the private sector. He and Steve also discuss how leaders can move from a tactical mindset into a logistical one, and prepare your team for worst case scenarios. Key Takeaways: There might be differences between generations or people of different cultures, but fundamentally most people want the same things, and basic respect goes a long way. As a leader, don't get bogged down in tactics. Remember to think about the logistics, so there is a plan B if something goes awry.  Technology can be an immensely useful tool, but don't get overly dependent on it.  Tune in to hear more about: The three stages of leadership (7:46) Conducting business in volatile regions (12:28) How a tabletop drill can reveal important weaknesses in your organization's crisis response (18:48) Standout Quotes: “You have to very clearly articulate to the people what you want done. And if it's very specific, you say, ‘I want this done,' and if it's generic, you say, ‘I want this outcome,' right? You can't say I want a general outcome when you have something specific in mind, because they're going to go off and do it whatever way you want. But if you're very clear, ‘I want this done this way,' or ‘I just want this outcome,' and you decide, delegate, disappear, you'd be amazed at what people can do.” - Brian Luther “If you go there and give them an opportunity to see you as just who you are, and learn them just as they are, you find that there's more in common than people would give credit for. So I would always say, before you go internationally, take some time to learn where you're going and respect the culture that you're going to be operating in.” - Brian Luther “There are tremendous benefits associated with technology, but any strength pushed too far is a weakness [...]. Don't be overreliant on something, and you put all your eggs in that one basket and you lose it, and then you don't have a second or a third option. You should be asking yourself, ‘What if I lose this, what if they figure out a way to foil that?' Because, remember, we put something out there, and in a strategic competition, there's move-countermove all the time. […] So use it as a tool, but don't be totally dependent on it that if someone takes that tool away from you, your whole organization collapses.” - Brian Luther Mentioned in this episode: Dear InfoSec Read the transcript of this episode Subscribe to the ISF Podcast wherever you listen to podcasts Connect with us on LinkedIn and Twitter From the Information Security Forum, the leading authority on cyber, information security, and risk management.
