In response to Cold War fears of total nuclear annihilation, a secretive scientific order plots to unite the world against a common enemy -- a monster from outer space, to be precise. Only the monster would need to come from their own ranks, a volunteer who would undergo a risky surgery that would transform his entire being into one from the planet Theta. Names are put in a bowl and Dr. Allen Leighton (played by Robert Culp) ends up being selected to undergo the dangerous metamorphosis. Meanwhile, his spacecraft is being prepared for a dramatic landing at UN headquarters when the transformation is complete.
