Was there a particular theme or visual that made you say, “Yes, I need to write this”?How closely did you work with the original film's team or studio? Were there any specific mandates or was the universe yours to expand freely? You've described this as taking “big gory swings.” What kind of boundaries were you hoping to push with this prequel that the film only hinted at?Tristan Jones' art and Pip Martin's colors amplify the discomfort and dread on every page. How did your collaboration with them shape the tone and feel of the book? The crew in Dark Descent each seems to be running from something. How did you land on this particular figure as the face of evil? What does he bring thematically to the world of Event Horizon? The first issue builds such thick atmosphere and creeping dread. Jimmy's 200th episode! Isn't this exciting?!?! It's Jimmy's 200th episode and he's invited Christian Ward back on the podcast to talk about his next writing gig after Two-Face, and, oh boy, what a series this is going to be! Chritian is writing EVENT HORIZON: DARK DESCENT. Working with artist Tristan Jones, Dark Descent is an official prequel to the film, telling the story of what happened to the first crew of the Event Horizon. Published by IDW, FOC is July 14th and issue 1 drops August 20th. Christian and Jimmy discuss Two-Face now that the series has wrapped, how Christian came to be involved in writing Dark Descent, the difficulties of writing a prequel story, and how they both want to hear from anyone that hasn't seen the movie yet what it's like reading the comic first and then watching the 1997 film. Check out Christian's website Follow Christian on Bluesky Follow IDW on Bluesky Event Horison: Dark Descent From the Publisher An all-new cosmic horror story set in the universe of the terrifying cult-classic film! The Event Horizon was a revolutionary spaceship designed for one mission: faster-than-light travel with a top secret and experimental gravity drive. But upon activating the device, the ship journeyed across the borders of Hell itself. In a nightmarish realm of torments beyond imagining, Captain Kilpack and the first crew of the Event Horizon must resist all manner of demonic forces including Paimon, the eyeless King of Hell, and their own descents into madness and bloodlust, if they've any chance of escaping back to their own world. Abandon all hope and board the Event Horizon with multiple Eisner Award-winner Christian Ward and powerhouse sci-fi artist Tristan Jones, in this unbelievable story of the true and final fate of the original Event Horizon crew. This original five-issue miniseries serves as an official prequel to the film! Event Horizon original film information Two Face From the publisher Harvey Dent has long been known as Two-Face, but the truth of his existence is more complicated than a simple name change. His fractured psyche maintains two distinct identities, often working against one another as they vie for control of their shared existence. Now, things are messier than ever as Harvey has taken up a position within Gotham's underworld as a sort of defense lawyer, working within the criminal underground to help litigate disputes and issues between the worst of the worst. But what happens when he finds himself going up against Two-Face in court?Collects Two-Face #1-6, from writer Christian Ward (Batman: City of Madness) and artist Fábio Veras. We have entered a whirlwind of chaos and controversy as the new order attempts to reshape the American political landscape. In this episode Rick sits with Andrew Egger, chief White House correspondent for The Bulwark, to dissect the early months of Trump's second first term in the White House. They explore how a disruptive, Doge-fueled approach is reshaping federal agencies, from hasty cuts in key national security institutions to internal power struggles, and debate the evolution of conservative politics. Send us a text This case centers around a young man who was a good student and an athlete. Known as a good-hearted individual, perhaps a bit quirky, he had never found himself in trouble. Yet, the act he would commit would send shockwaves through his community and the world, an act of unimaginable horror. This once promising student suddenly found himself at the center of a gruesome crime that left two people dead and another injured. The most chilling detail? He was discovered attempting to consume the face of one of his victims. What could drive someone from such a promising path to the depths of such brutality? Was it the shadow of mental illness, lurking unseen until it erupted in violence? Could his history of drug use have played a role, warping his mind and actions? Or was there a darker, more sinister force at play—something beyond the realm of science and reason? Welcome to Episode 45- Dark Descent: The Case of Austin Harrouff. Aaaaaaaand, we’re done! It’s “A Little Something For Us Tempunauts” by Philip K. Dick and “The Dark Descent” is over! PARTY HORN NOISE!
WE’RE SO CLOSE TO THE END! It’s the penultimate “Dark Descent” story and it’s a whopper! “The Hospice” is quintessential Robert Aickman: it’s creepy, offbeat, weird, strange, chilling and inexplicable. We really loved it and now… only one story to go!
What a mystery this story is! Willow isn’t sure if she likes it, or if it even qualifies as horror. I’m enamored of it, but can’t really decide what it’s about! PERFECT! It’s “The Asian Shore” by Thomas M. Disch!
This week, it’s one of the most terrifying and terribly intimate stories we’ve yet covered. The cosmic horror of “The Willows” by Algernon Blackwood!
This week, Willow and I take a look at the creepy effects of UNFETTERED CAPITALISM with Edith Wharton’s “Afterward!”
Whaddaya get when you take a dead guy, an invisible monster and a heaping dose of post-Civil War Traumatic Stress Disorder? “The Damned Thing” by Ambrose Bierce! The missingest author in the history of Weird Fiction!
Aliens: Dark Descent takes some wild narrative risks—and the consensus among fans seems to be those risks paid off. In this interview, Christian and Patrick talk to Tindalos Narrative Designer and Writer Thibault Claudel about his time on the project. We gain some great insights into 20th Century's handling of the IP and how it's changed somewhat since the Disney Era began a few years ago (hint: it's not what you might expect!), and we learn a ton about the process of putting a game like this together. This week, Willow and Phil take a quick look at a quick story: “The Beautiful Stranger” by Shirley Jackson. We throw out a lot of theories as to the actual nature of this story, but the one thing we can agree on? That stranger is beautiful.
Sometimes, you don’t even need to ask. “What Was It?” by Fitz-James O’Brien!
Boy oh boy are we ever getting tired of sad men dying for their ghosts. It’s “The Beckoning Fair One” by Oliver Onions! A good story, but jeez, guys. See a therapist or something.
We’ve got a big one this week! It’s “The Repairer of Reputations” by Robert W. Chambers and Willow goes OFF. If you’re looking for her sources, here they are! de Oliveira, Hugo Mendes. “An Empire of Delusion: The Process of Alienation as Expressed by Robert W. Chambers' ‘The Repairer of Reputations.'” Thesis, Proquest Dissertations Publishing, … Continue reading "The Dark Descent – “The Repairer of Reputations” by Robert W. Chambers"
This week, we’re heading off to jolly ol’ Russia for a bit of nineteenth century whimsey titled “Clara Militch” or “Klara Milich” or any number of permutations. It’s by Ivan Turgenev and it’s a real cracker! By which I mean, we were utterly confused by it.
It’s another headscratcher! “Seaton’s Aunt” by Walter de la Mare might not be the scariest story we’ve ever read, but it sure does make me feel sad!
Yes, I sing Hall and Oates at one point. It’s “Night-Side” by Joyce Carol Oates!
We’re back in Lovecraft Country, this week! It’s Stephen King’s “Crouch End” and it’s a modern CLASSIC!
When is a ghost not a ghost? When it’s a SIGNAL-MAN! It’s “The Signal-Man” by Charles Discken and Willow has NOTES on the story! NOTES!
“Seven American Nights” is phenomenal and Gene Wolfe is brilliant. That’s all.
A spooky collection that's seasonally appropriate. The Xbox Game Pass “Surprise Me” button feels rigged with its pick for this episode about the survival horror compilation created by Frictional Games. Tom is excited to play something spooky and seasonally appropriate, but it won't surprise you that Chris is much less enthusiastic. This collection contains three titles from the series, namely The Dark Descent, Justine, and A Machine for Pigs. Each of these is a full experience unto itself, so it will be interesting to learn how each host decided to spend their hour. Will the story be engrossing enough to keep our duo engaged and itching to continue when the time is up, or will they want to have their memory wiped like the game's protagonist? “Sssssssssmokin’!” Oh, somebody stop me. This week, we begin a new chunk of “The Dark Descent” as we wend our way into “A Fabulous Formless Darkness” by way of the game-changing short story “Smoke Ghost” by Fritz Leiber. Does it live up to the hype? Yes. Yes, it does.
In this week's episode, Marissa chats with Kalyn Josephson about her latest YA fantasy, THIS DARK DESCENT. Also discussed: how technical writing can help with creative and novel writing, using Jewish mythology as inspiration for fantasy (golems!), the joy in worldbuilding, how all fantasy books should have a map, how to decide whose point of view to write scenes in when crafting a multiple POV story, the intrigue of morally gray characters, balancing multiple book releases with a day job, and so much more!FormativeWhere the leaders of today are interviewed by leaders of tomorrow! Oh, Henry James. Why must you be so obtuse? This week, it’s a return to the creeps and the spooks as we take a step inside “The Jolly Corner!” Any good? Well, Willow had no idea what was going on!

This week, it’s a story that is remarkably similar in many ways to last weeks. So, we both loved it, of course! Right? RIGHT?! *sigh* It’s “Good Country People” by Flannery O’Connor.
Doyle Donehoo talks about his soundtrack for Aliens: Dark Descent
This week, it’s our first Tanith Lee story and, maybe not coincidentally, one of our favorites. Is it horror? Who cares? It’s awesome! It’s “Three Days” here on The Dark Descent!
As fans continue to play and praise Aliens: Dark Descent, Patrick and Christian sat down to talk to the Deputy Director herself, Maeko Hayes, voiced by Julianna Kurokawa (The Peripheral, The Witcher, Avenue 5).
