Sprog : Dansk. Deltagere : TBA Sted : Telt 1 : David Kato
A rainbow review of the Biden/Harris Inauguration; David Kato remembered as Musevini maintains power; President Biden orders federal LGBTQ job rights on his first day, Buttigieg “refreshes” Senators at his confirmation hearing, other Cabinet nominees support queer equality, a trans person is tapped for a first-ever federal post, Biden’s White House website reflects gender diversity … and oh, those Bernie mittens memes! All that, and more this week, when you choose “This Way Out”: the world’s audio oasis for queer news and culture.

“Millennial Karen Locked on Balcony” intro by David Kato [I’ve gotten locked out on our balcony once before, as documented in an old episode. Bizarrely, I managed to get audio of a neighbor on a bordering property going through the same experience, months after mine. What makes this neighbor a Karen is that she’s walked her dog over onto our apartment property at least two separate times to let her dog piss and shit next to the swimming pool she doesn’t pay to rent. Karens are great performers and know how to turn on the manners when it benefits them. Through the three combined clips, 1) she gets the attention of a passerby, they discuss how she got locked out (watering her plants), if her front door is unlocked, if she can climb down (there’s no point, she’d still be locked out), & if she’s called anyone. The passerby leaves to go check the manager’s office. 2) Karen hears back from her boyfriend, who can’t get there for a couple hours. 3) The passerby returns, saying that the property manager is on their way. You can hear Karen’s dog going berserk, barking from inside the unit as Karen waits helplessly, pondering her next dumb move to wreak havoc on the world.]“Momma Miss America” theme by Laws & J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League“Doin’ Time (Summertime Supercut)(LDR Remake + Original + Eerie Splendor Remix + LDR Instrumentals)” outro by Sublime, Lana Del Rey, & Mad LionToday, we discuss the BS of receiving medical insurance bills a year later, the irony of fear-based gun ownership, the 401k retirement scam, acknowledging the side-effects of what you want, prayer & faith vs action & education, the BS banking practice of listing one large single purchase as multiple transactions, thoughts on the milk industry, and a conspiracy theory about preventing protests.Audio samples created & owned by their original license holders. League“That’s What I Like” interlude by Bruno Mars“Epic” outro by B.o.B.We got halfway through this episode and seriously began questioning whether Dave got his old notes mixed in with his new notes, wondering if we had actually already recorded this show. But we’re pretty sure we haven’t…pretty sure…we hope. The cherry on top: Ashley once again lost her audio for the second half of the show. I’m not keeping track, but I’m pretty sure that’s her fourth time, while I haven’t lost my audio once. Welcome to the clusterfuck. We reflect on what we’ve been up to over hiatus, Dave struggling with finding purpose & motivation, struggling to resolve our petty fights that feel big at the time, apartment neighbor annoyances, cool mockingbird neighbors, a useful online voting tool at VotersEdge.org, brand loyalty recommendations, questionable marketing, taking risks & chances only on things you’re innately attracted to, improv vs speech class in school, a conspiracy about fan edit movies, the ethical entertainment Will Smith says he aspires for, the questionable efficacy of car alarms, Amazon’s devious efforts to scam their customers, and the uselessness of comparing ourselves to famous successful people.Audio samples created & owned by their original license holders. “G&L vs Katt Williams (Ambient Sound)” intro by David Kato [This is a recording of our old white neighbors loudly listening to a stand-up bit called “Church & Atheists” on Katt Williams’ HBO special “Priceless Afterlife.” We have heard them loudly reading the Bible multiple times with their windows & door wide open for all to hear and have also observed them trying to convert a mentally disabled elderly neighbor of ours on two separate occasions. However, despite their religious holier-than-thou facade, they have no problem cussing and loudly using the n-word. “G” prepped the clip to play his wife and says “This is fucked up” to brace her for what Katt is about to say. “L” gasps and responds by saying “motherfucker” and drops an n-bomb, while “G” makes a remark about Katt doing it as a “revenge joke.” This is part of the deeply disturbing hypocrisy & hatred I witnessed during my 18 years in the church, which continues festering to this day.]“Momma Miss America” theme by Laws & J.U.S.T.I.C.E. “No Dogs Allowed, Karen (Ambient Sound)” intro by David Kato [Our apartment neighbor’s girlfriend brought her dogs over for a weekend visit. Our property is supposed to be dog free, cats only. This was one of the reasons we chose to pay thousands of dollars to live here. However, the property manager is allowed to have a dog (?!?), and people play monkey see monkey do. The night before this episode was recorded, neighbor girlfriend (we’ll call her Karen) was taking her dog out for a piss & shit about 3 feet from another neighbor’s window. I witnessed the incident as she attempted to choke her dog into shutting up, pulling aggressively on the leash so its front paws were off the ground, telling it sternly “Be quiet!” The other neighbor came out and asked her to not walk her dog by their bedroom window and then asked if they were even a resident here. Karen replied she was (she’s not). Cut to the morning of these four ambient sound recordings: 1) Karen is showing her boyfriend where the incident happened. Karen downplays her actions & behavior (as any true Karen would), lies about how close she was to the neighbor’s window, & calls the neighbor who confronted her last night a “bitch.” They leave, then later 2) we hear loud opera music coming from their apartment unit & a nice door slam. A little while later 3) her dog begins barking, then later again 4) she takes another dog out for a piss while talking to our creepy neighbor guy.]“Momma Miss America” theme by Laws & J.U.S.T.I.C.E. Their propaganda was found on their church’s website and recorded March 26, 2019. Cassie went to Bible college, I did not. She gleefully accepts everything in the Bible (and then some), while I do not. We no longer keep in contact because I don’t want to associate with anyone who intentionally manipulates and exploits vulnerable people. Christians often talk in certainties, yet their beliefs are wholly based on faith and personal interpretation. So, to cope with the pain and frustration of that situation, I decided to find the humor in it and to hopefully point out some of the flawed logic & tactics religious people use to con (convert & control) others. The non-religious & nonpartisan "Kato Frank" podcast is David Kato talking frankly about diet, exercise, positive experiences, lessons learned, relationships, jobs, entertainment, government, mental health, & headline news. (Remix)” outro by Alejandro Chal, Kanye West & Jay-ZAll samples created & owned by their original license holders.Hang on to your hats, this one’s about suicide. We need to normalize this discussion. Pain and suffering shouldn’t be kept quiet and private. Talk to someone you trust, reach out to a hotline, shop around for a therapist, hit me or Ashley up, just take it serious and take action against those thoughts. We might be broken and our wiring might be fucked up, but we’re here now and there’s a lot of cool shit and cool people worth sticking around for. I’ve tasted it and you’ve tasted it, we know it can be good. Just because it’s painful rewiring ourselves doesn’t mean we quit. “GOOD Friday” intro by Kanye West, Common, Pusha T, Kid Cudi, Big Sean & Charlie Wilson [I remember Aaron paid me $5 in 2010 to download Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” for him. This song was a promotional single for it.] “The Prayer” outro by Kid Cudi [This song is off Cudi’s 2008 mixtape, which gained the attention of Kanye West & led to Cudi’s 2009 debut studio album, “Man on the Moon,” which Aaron gave me a poster of around the time of its release.]This is the last recorded conversation I had with Aaron before he died on April 11, 2021 due to complications from open heart surgery. He called me from a bar at night after we had texted back and forth a bit that day. We discuss 1) Eminem’s new “Kamikaze” album, 2) Aaron’s finances & relationship struggles, 3) our efforts to stay busy, and 4) why I quit a job after the first week. Aaron would’ve made a good podcast co-host. I tried to convince him for years to move to Cali with me or go into business with me. He was only 2 months younger than me, so to hear about his death was a surprise, but at the same time I wasn’t entirely shocked. We both joked about suicide & reckless living a lot because we both grew tired of the pain & struggles of life. Obituaries don’t mention if someone had been a bully or was drinking heavily to cope or had DUIs. I have a lot of really fun memories with him, but I also have a lot of bad memories too. It became difficult for me to connect with him and we drifted apart. He moved down to Texas about a year after I moved out to California, I was hoping he’d do better down there. I’ll miss him.A couple years ago Aaron gave me permission to post some of the conversations we recorded. Part of the reason this show exists is to hopefully educate, through transparency, to help prevent the worst and strive for the best by discussing things openly. Aaron battled with a growing dependence on alcohol, which is a sign of depression. The first step is acknowledging the root-and-results of your struggle with a behavior, then learn about it and implement adjustments with the help of those who support your evolution. Keep fighting for the good in life that we know can exist. RIP A.M.H.Audio samples created & owned by their original license holders. Roger Ross Williams, the director, God Loves Uganda, which opens theatrically Nov. 1 in San Francisco at the Roxie Theatre, joins us for an interview. Roger Ross Williams directed and produced Music by Prudence, winner of the 2010 Academy Award for documentary short subject. He is the first African American to win an Oscar for directing and producing a film. He has produced and directed dozens of hours of non-fiction programming for major television networks and cable channels. Williams has won numerous awards for his work. Currently, Williams has several projects in development, including a feature narrative film about the African American Baptist church titled Black Sheep. Visit http://www.godlovesuganda.com/ We close with a show recorded June 19, which closes with an interview with two directors, KATHERINE FAIRFAX WRIGHT - filmmaker; MALIKA ZOUHALI-WORRALL - filmmaker and LONGJONES - subject from the film, Call Me Kuchu, which screened at Frameline June 19, 2012. The film depicts the last year in the life of David Kato, a courageous, quick-witted and steadfast man whose wisdom and achievements were not fully recognized until after his death. While heartbreaking, the documentary traces a narrative that takes the viewer beyond the chronicle of victimization depicted in international news media: it tells the nuanced story of David and Kampala's kuchus as they work to change their fate, and that of other kuchus across Africa.depicts the last year in the life of a courageous, quick-witted and steadfast man whose wisdom and achievements were not fully recognized until after his death.
”WHO’S NEXT?
Tidigare höll regimen dem under strikt bevakning. President Mubarak of Egypt is desperate to leave office with a degree of dignity, but Lyse Doucet meets people in Cairo who think the time for change is now. US-led forces in Afghanistan feel they are making progress; Robert Fox considers whether this might be the beginning of the end for the Taliban or just another lull in the fighting. Few countries are as homophobic as Uganda; homosexual acts can be punished with years in prison. But following the death of gay rights activist David Kato, Anna Cavell finds Kampala's gay community in defiant mood. Pripyat in the Ukraine is a ghost town, abandoned within hours of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power-plant in 1986; Richard Hollingham explores the ruins of a model Soviet settlement frozen in time. Tea is a popular brew in both Britain and India but it's really not the same drink at all. Indian chai is something of a surprise to taste buds accustomed to the less spicy English preparation, but Judy Swallow soon fell in love with it.
