Scouting for Growth

On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Scott Gunther, who is not only a corporate venture capitalist and start-up enthusiast—he’s also the secret ingredient that helps big businesses think like nimble innovators! In this episode, we’ll hear how Scott’s unique blend of strategic vision and hands-on execution has set him apart in both blue-chip boardrooms and early-stage tech circles. We’ll dive into the venture client model, explore the evolving CVC (Corporate Venture Capital) landscape through the lens of 2025, and uncover the do’s and don’ts for insurance providers and emerging Tech founders. KEY TAKEAWAYS Recently we’ve seen a bit of stability in CVC investment, there’s been a strong volume of deal-flow dollars that are starting to pour into startup investment. At the same time, we’re seeing corporate change their attitudes and approaches to innovation and venturing. Some have closed their CVC funds, others have changed their investment focus, some have scaled back altogether, although some are quite the opposite. We’re starting to see CVCs experiencing slower exit returns and their financials aren’t what they were in 2021/22. In the last 2-3 years the savvy CVCs have done 2 things well: They’ve managed to keep their portfolio afloat and managed to hang onto their strategic assets but have also helped their portfolio grown at the same time. This will be a trend for CVCs in 2025. We don’t put anything up to our investment community until we have an exec sponsor because post-investment is when the exec sponsor comes to life and the VC model starts to hit home. We have a dedicated post-investment team that connect the startup and the corporate. The biggest opportunities for insurers and CVCs operating in that space is understand how people use and interact with digital technologies, and how they’re affecting society. Also, customer segmentation and proposition development is different for different demographics now and how different cohorts are research, buy, service, claim, it’s not one size fits all. The savvy insurers know what these macro-trends are and understand how the latest technology, data, and AI trends are. This could help us get to the holy grail: The segment of one! BEST MOMENTS ‘We’re going to see more competition, things are going to happen faster and cheaper, but there’s still an uncertainty about which things we should own and which we should outsource.’ ‘I think a lot of people focus on the E and S or ESG, but not the G, but the G incorporates some of the most crucial aspects about how a company runs itself.’ ‘The more efficient and effective a company can run the more it can have on its customers and community.’ ‘We connect the startup with the corporate to create mutual commercial value, it’s an ethos we live by.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Scott Gunther is a Corporate Venture Capitalist and start-up enthusiast with a track record of partnering with business leaders to identify strategic opportunities and guide transformational change. Drawing on years of experience designing future-state, digital-first businesses and delivering critical programs across multiple industries, he brings a rare blend of strategic vision and executional prowess to his clients and colleagues. Why does innovation have to be external as opposed to internal? Do CVCs turbocharge innovation? What is the ideal oversight for a CVC? And what metrics should we use to measure the success of CVCs? In a free-wheeling discussion on the merits and challenges of CVCs, Sauvage and Sarkar debate a few big bets versus many small ones, exploitation versus exploration, financial returns versus innovation objectives and cultural osmosis versus a Chinese wall between the corporate and the venture. Listen to two Stanford alumni discuss the critically important topic of CVCs and share your comments.

Deutsche Bank´s Head of Corporate Venture Capital Joerg Landsch shares his insights about the current VC market and the investment into Aleph AlphaSummary:Aleph Alpha and Deutsche Bank InvestmentJoerg from Deutsche Bank Venture Capital discusses the bank's investment in Aleph Alpha, a leading German AI company often compared to OpenAI. Despite some early investors, such as Lakestar and 468 Capital, stepping away, others like Early Bird continue to support the company. Joerg emphasizes the dual nature of Aleph Alpha as both a strategic and VC-driven case, with its funding round being heavily oversubscribed. The company is strategically positioned as a European leader in secure AI solutions, particularly focusing on compliance and legal applications while maintaining GDPR compliance and handling sensitive data effectively.Venture Capital Market RecoveryJoerg highlights a slight dip in global venture capital funding in Q3 2024, reaching $55 billion due to fewer mega-rounds. However, he anticipates strong growth in Q4 and beyond, discussing factors like the US presidential election, the Ukraine conflict, and economic policies. He doesn't foresee significant startup relocations to the US despite geopolitical tensions.German and European VC Market DevelopmentsJoerg discusses the “Win Initiative,” a €10 billion investment plan for startups in Germany and Europe. He notes bipartisan political support for venture capital across administrations and highlights the need to close Europe's €30 billion annual investment gap. Insurance and pension funds are identified as potential key players in the market.European Capital Market RegulationJoerg points out challenges in the VC market, such as low exit rates (5.2%) and IPO shortages in Q3. Successful exits are crucial for reinvesting in new funds, and European capital market reforms are necessary to enhance liquidity and provide faster exit options.AI Ecosystem TrendsJoerg identifies four layers of AI development: hardware, foundational models, applications, and infrastructure. He notes that the most innovation and activity currently occur in the application layer, reflecting Aleph Alpha's focus on practical, scalable AI solutions.

The conversation with Jeppe Høier covers various topics related to corporate venture capital (CVC). Jeppe discusses the structure of CVCs, the different types of investments they make, the challenges and benefits of working with CVCs, and the differences between European and US CVCs. The discussion also touches on the lengthy process of engaging with CVCs and provides tips for startups to navigate this process. Overall, the conversation aims to provide insights and understanding of CVCs for startups and investors. In this conversation, Jeppe Høier and Samia discuss the role of corporate venture capital (CVC) in the climate tech industry. They explore how CVCs differ from traditional venture capital firms and the advantages they offer to startups. They also discuss the challenges startups face when seeking investment from CVCs and provide advice on how to navigate the landscape. Additionally, they touch on the changing landscape of CVCs and the importance of building relationships with corporates. TakeawaysCorporate venture capital (CVC) is an important player in the startup ecosystem, with corporates having a significant role to play in the energy transition and climate tech. The structure of CVCs can vary, with different decision-making processes and strategic goals. Some CVCs invest for return purposes, while others invest with the goal of potential acquisition.Engaging with CVCs can be a lengthy process due to the bureaucratic nature of large corporations. Startups need to understand the decision structure and process of the CVC they are working with.Information flow and communication between startups and CVCs can be challenging, but it is crucial for successful collaboration. Startups should consider limiting access to information rights and keeping ownership below 5% to protect their interests.European CVCs are still developing and may not have the same level of maturity and experience as their US counterparts. However, the European startup ecosystem is growing, and more success stories are emerging. Startups should seek value creation from CVCs beyond just financial investment, such as access to assets, brands, customers, data, and expertise. When looking for investment from a CVC, startups should understand the specific value they are seeking and target CVCs that align with their industry and goals.CVCs can provide startups with revenue opportunities, cost savings, and access to their network and resources.Startups should conduct due diligence on CVCs and seek references from other portfolio companies to understand the value they can bring. The CVC landscape is constantly evolving, and there is a need for more deep tech investors in the climate tech space.Corporates can also play a role as limited partners (LPs) in venture funds, but it may take longer to raise capital from them.Building relationships and understanding the decision-making structure within corporates is essential for successful collaboration with CVCs. LinksCorporate venturing newsletterResearch: The Lifecycle of Corporate Venture Capital Contact UsGuest: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeppehoier/Email us: info@climatetech360.comHost: https://www.linkedin.com/in/samiaqader/

Episode 319 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Peter Berg, Managing Partner at M12, Microsoft's venture capital fund. I've had lots of investors as guests on the podcast, but I was excited to interview Peter because I've never interviewed an investor from a CVC or a Corporate Venture Capital fund. I'm not sure what the number is today, but according to a 2023 report about CVCs, it counts 1,100 active CVCs. Based on this scale, it is a very meaningful opportunity for entrepreneurs in terms of raising capital. Thus, Peter and I pretty much get right into the details towards the beginning of our conversation about the world of CVCs… from what they are, differentiators, strategic advantages of raising capital from a CVC, how to evaluate a CVC, and other topics. As previously stated, M12 is Microsoft's VC fund. The firm invests in Seed, Series A, and Series B rounds of funding across different categories like Cloud Infrastructure, AI, Cybersecurity, Web 3 & Gaming, Vertical SaaS, and Developer Tools. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * How Peter landed a first name @peter handle on Twitter / X.com. * A walk through Peter's career including his investment into Square and the creation of Visa Ventures which scaled to a global organization and went on to invest in Stripe, LoopPay (a Boston startup that was acquired by Samsung), and many other companies. * All the details on Peter's area of focus at M12 and what he is targeting for investments. * M12 portfolio company examples like Inworld and Typeface. * His thoughts and opinions on the current state of the market for raising capital. * And so much more.

When you're moving as a family, the only common denominator you have is the family, so you stick together and you make sure that everybody goes through the experience in the smoothest way possible.20 YEARS IN PERSPECTIVE:Quite a ride, it brought me through 5 different locations (Switzerland, France, Spain, Andora, Bulgaria and now Israel), 9 or 10 different positions and all with this desire, this intent to actually revolutionize to some extent a quite old and legacy industry and move it into something closer to the twenty first century. We've always wanted to be kept on our feet, to put ourselves in challenging situations, facing new unknowns over time probably in order to avoid complacency and comfort of just having a very, well-organed life. The more the company was offering new locations, the more we felt it was just not the right thing to do. And the right thing to do was to stay here, to live in Israel, to become Israelis, to develop our kids here in this country. The biggest challenge has been to advocate for this smoke-free world as part of Philip Morris, to come in as a representative of the largest, you could say, death enabler from some perspective of avoidable death, by selling cigarettes and being listened to and considered by anti-tobacco activists, by political stakeholders, by community leaders has been very challenging and quite painful and quite tough at times. One of the biggest personal changes was also to manage our parents from a remote perspective, parents who are getting older and don't have their grandkids around them.I had a stint at startup and eventually things weren't exactly the way I was expecting them to be. I found it to be way more complex than I guess I naively thought and actually quite cynical. Overall I understood what it takes to be an entrepreneur and to be part of a startup and to manage it and it turned out that it was not really my thing, so it was a great experience but it didn't really hit my DNA in the way I thought it would. What I'm doing at Catalyst Investments is actually offering selling or setting up a platform in the form of a venture capital fund for corporates that want to create a portfolio of startups in Israeli innovation.ON TOPIC: All things Israel, start-up scene, ecosystem, Israeli cultureYou have now more than 90 unicorns out of Israel, which is the highest number for a single country in the world, number of startups per capita and investments.I think it's the country that invests the highest percentage of GDP into education, over nine percent of Israel's GDP is going to education.Israel had always been a bit of a dream destination, something that I was, we were very keen in experiencing.[Israel] is still a pilot project as a country, it's a 75 year old country made of a melting pot of people that have immigrated from over 80 countries so it's still all in development. The Israeli Innovation Authority is really fuelling and funding not only with money, but also with support and with networking capabilities the entrepreneurs and their ventures. There's more 380 VCs present in Israel providing funding. All THINGS INSEAD AND GIVING BACKINSEAD is so intimately linked to most of the things that have happened to me. It's not only about giving back to be connected and to participate and to be active about it.I don't see INSEAD as just a place where we learn things, or we developed a great network and friendships. It's really a foundation step in what has happened to me and my family over the past twenty years.

0:00 -- Intro.1:35 -- Start of interview. *Link to our first episode: E6 from June 2020.2:18 -- On the origin story of her new podcast: The Startup Solution with Heidi Roizen. 4:23 -- The Case of the Boardroom Blow-Up.  How entrepreneurs should go from 'pitching' to 'partnering' with their investors. "Entrepreneurs get stuck in pitch mode." On terms "happy ears" and "jazz handy." On the golden rule of the boardroom: no surprises. "A board meeting should be a working meeting, it should not be a performance." On "Boardzillas."15:55 -- What should entrepreneurs know about how VC funds works? On VCs wearing two hats in the boardroom (as a board member and as an investor). On the Trados case and the Rule of Common Maximization.19:42 -- The Case of the Downer Round. On the preference stack and nuances of venture financing. On "structured terms" or "dirty terms." "When an entrepreneur trades structure for valuation, they are almost always giving downside protection in order to get more of the upside." [Heidi's more detailed blog post on down-rounds. Take by Janelle Teng]. On the pendulum of influence from founder-friendly to investor-friendly.33:00 -- On secondary transactions of private company shares. On reasonable and/or rational options. On removing founders. "Inside a market there is always is a sub-market, and right now generative AI is very hot."41:51 -- The Case of the In-Law Investors. What to consider when doing an angel investment. "When anyone asks me whether they should make a seed investment, I tell them to do so only if 1) they can do so with money they can afford to lose; 2) they don't mind tying up those funds for seven years or more (it's an illiquid investment); and 3) they have enough additional money to put about 30-40% more in a future round if the opportunity or need arises. More importantly: founders should consider how they would feel if 'family & friends' lost the money as a result of their startup failing. 45:26-- The Case of the Strategic Sucker-Punch. The difference between a strategic investor (corporate venture capital investor) vs a pure venture investor: the latter only makes money by buying the stock low and selling the stock high while the former also makes money if its stock also goes up. "They are called strategic investors for a reason: they are using investment dollars to drive strategy that should be additive to their strategy."49:07 -- On best practices with board observers. ROFRs.51:07 -- On the role of independent directors in startups. Promoting diversity in startup boards. Fred Wilson (USV)'s board diversity proposal.57:44 -- On cross-over and PE board governance and cultural distinctions with VC.Heidi Roizen is a venture capitalist, corporate director and ‘recovering' entrepreneur. In this episode we talk about corporate venture capital: Why should you do it? How should you do it? And what should you expect from it?   Traditionally, established corporations have tended to view start-ups as undisciplined and naive, while start-ups might dismiss incumbents as stodgy and behind the times. It's (mostly) not like that anymore, as both sides increasingly recognize each other's strengths and the value of collaborating. In fact, large companies are now involved in about a third of all venture deals—an all-time high. More than three-quarters of the Fortune 100 are active in the venture capital (VC) space and half have a VC arm set up as a subsidiary, not including companies with internal VC business units.  Joining us to discuss this innovation and investment landscape are Matt Banholzer and Sid Ramtri. Matt is a partner in our Chicago office who heads up innovation at McKinsey and is a leader in our growth and LEAP business building practices. Sid is an associate partner in our São Paulo office and a core member of our private equity and venture capital practices.   Related insights:   How to make investments in start-ups pay off  How to build a unicorn: Lessons from venture capitalists and start-ups  The Ecosystem Economy   Join our LinkedIn community of more than 90,000 members and follow us on Twitter at @McKStrategy.  Explore our collection of Inside the Strategy Room episode transcripts on McKinsey.com   See www.mckinsey.com/privacy-policy for privacy information
