Baxie talks to author/filmmaker David Leaf. For more the last 47 years David has been the trusted friend and biographer for Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. In his latest book “SMiLE: The Rise, Fall, and Resurrection of Brian Wilson” recounts the story of pop music's greatest lost album and how it came back to life. This is the single greatest story in the history of pop music. And David Leaf, who also made the brilliant documentary “Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of SMiLE” (2004), has done an incredible job of diving even deeper into the story. It's an amazing conversation! Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and on the Rock102 app! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee.
In this episode of My Rock Moment, we're diving deep into one of rock and roll's most legendary what-could-have-beens… and what-finally-was. Back in 1966, fresh off the groundbreaking success of Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson set out to create his magnum opus: Smile. With poet and lyricist Van Dyke Parks at his side, the project promised to be a revolutionary leap forward—a kaleidoscopic, avant-garde album that would redefine what pop music could be. But as recording progressed, the pressure from within the band, the label, and Brian's own mental health struggles led to the album's unraveling. The sessions were shelved, and Smile became one of music history's greatest mysteries—a “lost” album that haunted fans, scholars, and Brian himself for decades. That is, until the early 2000s, when Smile finally got its moment in the sun. Reimagined and completed by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks nearly 40 years later, the album was not only resurrected—it was performed live, recorded, and finally released, closing the loop on one of rock's most mythical stories. Joining us to unpack it all is David Leaf—acclaimed writer, director, producer, and longtime friend of Brian Wilson. David has chronicled Brian's life and legacy for decades, and in his new book, SMiLE: The Rise, Fall and Resurrection of Brian Wilson, he brings fresh insight into Smile's rise, fall, and miraculous comeback. The Beach Boys' SMiLE was abandoned by Brian Wilson in 1967 and eventually performed at an emotional gathering of the faithful in London 37 years later. He talks to us here about his discoveries, which include … ... the Rolling Stone story that kick-started his obsession. … “a bicycle ride from Plymouth Rock to Hawaii” and other early plans for the album. … how Leonard Bernstein, the Beatles and Derek Taylor racked up the pressure in the studio. … why the other Beach Boys – and Capitol and Murry Wilson - felt the new music was a threat to their livelihood. … how Brian composed the “teenage symphony for God” that became an albatross around his neck. ... “Ray Davies needed a deadline”: the perils of endless recording time. … the magnetism of Van Dyke Parks, a man who “talks in paragraphs”. ... the imagined impact on the world and the band's career if SMiLE had come out in 1967. … the birth of “art rock” versus the strictures of the music business. … the value of the SMiLE myth in the eventual rebirth of the Beach Boys. … the reaction to its long-awaited performance at the Festival Hall in 2004. ... why Brian thought shelving the album would save the group yet “they went from a No 1 single to an act nobody cared about in under a year”. ... and the greatest Beach Boys record of all time. SMiLE was an album that never came out. Not in the '60s when it was made. Not after Pet Sounds. Brian Wilson made an album-when he was 24- that was so visionary it nearly broke him. And this tremendous book gives you everything you ever wanted to know about how SMiLE became myth, then obsession, then burden, and then finally against all odds- triumph! *Want to win a free copy of Queen & A Night At The Opera: 50 Years? Returning guest Pete Kember (aka Sonic Boom) is back, and better than ever, as he tackles the 9th LP by The Beach Boys. As it says in David Leaf's 1990 CD two-fer liner notes: “After side two of Today!, it didn't seem possible that Brian could return to these simpler themes, but for one last album, he found a way to combine Capitol's commercial demands with his artistic calling.” Stay tuned, Pete'll be back for one of our many episodes on SMiLE!Here's just a few of the many things that Pete discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:How Pete's obsession with The Beach Boys began; An in-depth conversation about Brian Wilson's first acid trip in April 1965;A consensus on Bruce Johnston's entrance into the band;Exactly how influenced Animal Collective's Panda Bear is by The Beach Boys;Brian's absolute hatred of his vocal for “Let Him Run Wild”;And the great “filler” debate, specifically with regard to exactly how much of it mars this record.Listen: linktr.ee/discograffitiI support a wife and a six-year-old son with Discograffiti as my sole source of income. We're finally back after a record-breaking hiatus. These things will happen when the entire country freezes over. Snowpocalypse was a disappointment compared to last week, and it didn't even get a name this time. That's okay, because we're inside thinking about the warm ocean air anyway, because we're all Beach Boys fans. David is too, as evidenced by the fact that he wrote God Only Knows: The Story of Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys and the California Myth. You've gotta be a pretty big fan of something to write a book about it. Even moreso to wake up early to talk about it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

*This special episode is dedicated to two "Girls Next Door" - Christine McVie and Robin Kaplin My Very Special Guest Today is David Leaf - Here to talk about his novel about his friendship with The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson. About “God Only Knows: The Story of Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys & the California Myth” Originally published in 1978 as The Beach Boys and the California Myth, this groundbreaking study was both the first full-length book on the band and the first to recognize Brian Wilson as one of the most significant and influential artists of the 20th century. Covering the turbulent family strife and internal conflicts as well as giving proper attention to the remarkable music, the book was an instant classic. An intimate look at Brian's rollercoaster of a life and career, it's told through the eyes of those who were there during Wilson's most legendary productions including Pet Sounds and Good Vibrations. Revised and updated, God Only Knows covers the decades since the 1985 edition, including Brian's first acclaimed solo album, his startling return to live performing, the landmark Pet Sounds tour, the All-Star Tribute to Brian Wilson (which David Leaf wrote and produced), and the triumphant and miraculous Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE world premiere in London. Filled with surprising revelations, insight, and behind-the-scenes detail, this indispensable book written by renowned Brian Wilson expert David Leaf also features forewords by the Bee Gees' Barry Gibb and Melinda Wilson. Whatever the subject, he presents it in an engaging, entertaining, and meaningful way so the audience is transported on a journey they'll never forget. “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.”——Michelangelo David Leaf - Go to www.leafprod.com for more!
