When most of us think about leadership, we tend to think of what it means to bring others together and work toward a common goal. However, leadership actually starts with leading ourselves. Self leadership is based on habit formation, discipline, and follow through. When we are self-aware enough to ask, ‘Who am I right now and who do I need to become?', we start the process of growing and expanding ourselves. Gila Kurtz, dog trainer and owner of Dog Is Good, shares why self leadership is so important in pet care and what it means to overcome the limiting beliefs that hold us back. Gila shares why setting goals for ourselves can be so hard and recognize the need for growth. We also discuss how being better at self leadership makes us better at leading others. Topics on this episode: * Defining your role as a pet professional * Limiting beliefs * Role of language * Self leadership * Leading with your ‘why' Main takeaway: Our limiting beliefs are built on our past experiences and become our operating system. Breaking free starts with being self aware and asking ourselves ‘who do I need to become'? Full show notes and transcript (https://www.petsitterconfessional.com/episodes/197)

A little about our guests. Gila and Jon are married and have been together 27 years. They have a 19 year old daughter, Abby, and 2 fur-babies, a Japanese Chin named Henry (10) and a Labrador Retriever named BOLO (3). Gila’s life and philosophy has been inspired by dog. Live more simply, work more efficiently and play a lot harder. Gila’s commitment to taking a dog’s approach to life resulted in her first book, Fur Covered Wisdom…A Dog Can Change the Way You See the World. Jon is an easy-going, great leader who is committed to his success and the success of those around him. Jon was selected to attend the United States Naval Academy and went on to serve for just over 27 years. At the academy, Jon played baseball…but didn’t get called up by his team, The Angels of Anaheim. Still, he cheers them on every chance he gets and loves attending games. He stays in shape with intense fitness workouts and long distance biking. How did they meet? Gila bought Jon with her Visa card while bidding on bachelors at an auction in 1988. True story. A little about their business. With a military lifestyle and moving every 2 years, Gila always had a sales gig going on. She convinced Jon to adopt a Dalmatian pup and realized she really loved dogs and became a dog trainer. Not just any dog trainer, Gila immersed herself in the science of canine behavior and wherever they moved, Gila’s reputation as the “go to” dog trainer proceeded them…much to the disappointment of Abby, the third human Kurtz in the family. Jon became involved in Dog is Good and upon retiring from the Navy, jumped in with both feet. He has even sworn off his triathlete training to devote time to building Dog is Good. Dog is Good is a lifestyle brand for dog parents, human siblings of dogs and all dog lovers. They manufacture gifts, apparel, and home décor. Their website is filled with products (including a cat is good section for cat lovers) and a fun blog. Dog is Good also supports Dogs on Deployment, a vital military program. One piece of advice (the nutshell version) Be very clear on what your strengths and weaknesses are and respect your partner’s strengths.
