The book is for people with big goals that they want to achieve, but they have doubts as to whether they are good enough to complete them. Tom was a Naval Aviator, where he accumulated more than 3,000 hours in 38 different types of military aircraft and retired as a US Navy Captain in 1994. Fred has also achieved extraordinary success in diverse realms. He graduated from the Naval Academy, lettering three years as quarterback. After military service, he transitioned to business, holding senior leadership positions in private/ public companies. He is an accomplished author, and his most recent book, “The Experience of Leadership,” is a high-water mark in leadership assessment by providing practical, actionable, and realistic insights into the leadership process. Fred's leadership and accomplishments have given him a distinct perspective and a results-oriented mindset. In this book, seventeen former military officers, mostly U.S. Naval Academy graduates, apply their insights shaped by combat, command, and senior leadership experience to illuminate the divisive threat to our military. 269 It Starts With Belief In Yourself   Inspiration and independence often go hand in hand as we go through life, often making us feel that we are alone while trying to claim our own personal slice of life. However to try and do this alone is not only a daunting task but can nearly be impossible, which is why finding community and a helping hand can be the defining factor between success or failure. In this episode Sarah Elkins and the esteemed Jenn Donahue discuss how important it is to find community and self belief as we go through life, in doing so we inspire those around us and make the road of life less lonely and easier for others.   Highlights Adapting to uncontrollable circumstances and finding joy in them.  Find a mentor for whatever it is you want to learn and be passionate about, go to different ones until you find what resonates with you.  Striving to inspire someone so that the next person's journey will be easier.   Quotes “I'm just one of those really headstrong or independent people that just sort of throws myself into something, which is not necessarily the right thing to do and now I tell people, “Go find a mentor.”.”  “It's so much easier to believe that you can be someone whenever you've actually seen someone in that position before.”  “There are others that are like you. You don't have to be an island, go find the other islands and make an archipelago.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, What evidence are you going to start pointing to that shows that you are resilient, that you are a badass? Collect a couple of stories tonight, the moment that you think about it, anytime something pops into your head, something you've accomplished, write it down. Collect the evidence so that that belief in yourself really starts to solidify. In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. Captain Alfred Scott McLaren served as commander of the USS Queenfish (SSN 651) from September 1969 to May 1973, the very height of the Cold War. As commander, McLaren led at least six major clandestine operations, including the first-ever exploration of the entire Siberian Continental Shelf: a perilous voyage detailed in his previous book Unknown Waters. A retired US Navy Captain, is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal and two Legions of Merit, president emeritus of the Explorers Club, former senior pilot of the SAS Super Aviator submersible, and president emeritus of the American Polar Society. Show Sponsor:  www.LaShamanaFaby.com Emergency Deep: Cold War Missions of a Submarine Commander conveys the entire spectrum of Captain McLaren's experiences commanding the USS Queenfish, mainly in the waters of the Russian Far East and also off Vietnam. McLaren offers a riveting and deeply human story that illuminates the intensity and pressures of commanding a nuclear attack submarine in some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable. Relying on his own notes and records, as well as discussions with former officers and shipmates, McLaren focuses on operational matters both great and small. He recounts his unique perspectives on attack-submarine tactics and exploratory techniques in high-risk or uncharted areas, matters of leadership and team-building and the morale of his crews, and the innumerable and often unforeseen ways his philosophy of command played out on a day-to-day basis, with consequences that ran the gamut from the mundane to the dire and life-threatening. Readers are also treated to significant new information and insight on submarine strategy, maneuvers, and culture. Such details illuminate and bring to life, with both great humor and gravitas, the intensity and pressures on those engaged in covert missions on nuclear attack submarines. Dr. Alfred S. McLaren has probably spent more time than anyone else in the twilight zone beneath the earth's northern ice, measuring its thickness, probing dark waters below, investigating its life and mapping the plains, crags and fissures of its seabed.   He has cut through ice-covered waters that few have seen, opening a hidden world.

The Make Your Move podcast enters a new season with special guest Carl Cramb, US Navy Captain (ret.). In episode 50, Carl shares his just over 29 years of US Navy active duty service, his transition to civilian life, and finding the right fit for both employees and companies.    Carl also shares why making time for yourself and finding the right fit are keys to success in post-military life.   SUMMARY   Carl Cramb served just over 29 years of active duty Navy service, attaining the rank of Captain. His duties included commanding a ship in Pearl Harbor, Chief of Staff at – US Second Fleet, and five tours at the Pentagon, working on various budget programs.   Carl began to explore the opportunities for transitioning out of the Navy at the 28.5-year mark by seeking advice from several of his mentors. He learned that one should start planning their post-military career early rather than waiting until transitioning out of service. After 29 years of service, Carl retired from the US Navy and entered the program management field before realizing it wasn't the right fit for him. A move into business development at a US defense company proved to be the right fit and has led Carl to operate his own consulting firm assisting companies serving the defense industry with long-term strategies and business development.   Post-military life has provided Carl with the freedom to spend more time with his family and give back to his community. He is currently the President of the Sarasota- Manatee Council of the US Navy League.    EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS     02:25–06:06 Carl shares his 29.5-year US Navy career and duties. 06:07 – 09:18 The decision to transition out of military service.  09:19 –15:14 Take some time for yourself and have a good perspective on what it is you truly want to do after serving. 15:15 – 21:59 The upsides to post-military life and career and finding the right fit. 22:00 – 23:54 Finding work/life balance.     Your Move     Show resources:  This book is intended to give back to the military community in which I served. I hope to convey lessons by opening up a bit and sharing some not-so-public details of my career that can save you years of frustration and accelerate your path forward. Another form of the give-back is my plan to provide 100 percent of the profits of this book to a great organization, Freedom Fighter Outdoors. I talk more about it in the book, but I want you to see upfront that this book really isn't about me; it's about you and others who will walk this path after us. If you have already left the service and are navigating your next career steps, this book is a great place to start. When service members transition from the military, they need to understand how to correctly leverage their experience into industry. It's common for former military personnel to struggle to fully adapt in the early years of their new civilian careers. They often need help to navigate the culture change they will be experiencing. They are used to a certain orderliness and to training and becoming an expert at a particular job. In both entrepreneurship and corporate life, the path forward is not always linear or clearly defined.   Order your copy of Make Your Move here.   100% of the proceeds of Make Your Move go to Freedom Fighter Outdoors.   Freedom Fighter Outdoors started as an awareness of the physical, mental, and emotional suffering of the men and women who served our country in the military. On June 19, 1864, a fourteen-month chase culminated in one of the most dramatic naval battles in history. The dreaded Confederate raider Alabama faced the Union warship Kearsarge in an all-or-nothing fight to the death, and the outcome would effectively end the threat of the Confederacy on the high seas. Award-winning and bestselling historians Phil Keith (who was a US Navy Captain) and Tom Clavin share this riveting, mostly untold, story in To the Uttermost Ends of the Earth: The Epic Hunt for the South's Most Feared Ship―and the Greatest Sea Battle of the Civil War (Hanover Square Press). Informed by comprehensive research, extensive photos, maps, and the authors' expertise, the book is a fresh blend of military, naval, and Civil War history. The authors' last book, All Blood Runs Red, was a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice, and praised by the Christian Science Monitor, Booklist, and more, and the pair are known for gripping yet substantiative narratives. In To the Uttermost Ends of the Earth, Keith and Clavin introduce some of the crucial but historically overlooked Civil War players, including John Winslow, captain of the USS Kearsarge, as well as Raphael Semmes, captain of the CSS Alabama. Readers will sail aboard the Kearsarge as Winslow embarks for Europe with a set of simple orders from the secretary of the navy: "Travel to the uttermost ends of the earth, if necessary, to find and destroy the Alabama." Winslow pursued Semmes in a spectacular fourteen-month chase over international waters, culminating in what would become the climactic sea battle of the Civil War. Today: The Confederate raider currently lies in French territorial waters and is the focus of a transcontinental salvage effort to raise funds for dives at the site, the recovery of artifacts, and more historical research. While parts of it have been brought up, most of the ship still lies on the ocean floor. Most Civil War narratives focus on the battles fought on land, but To the Uttermost Ends of the Earth is a riveting, deep dive into the greatest sea battle of the war. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Phil Keith (1946-2021) was the author of six books, including Blackhorse Riders, which won the 2012 award from USA Book News for Best Military Non-Fiction, was a finalist for the 2013 Colby Award, and earned a 2013 silver medal from Military Writers Society of America. He held a degree in history from Harvard and was a former Navy aviator. During three tours in Vietnam, he served with distinction and was awarded, among other decorations, the Purple Heart, Air Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and the Navy Commendation Medal. Tom Clavin is the author of eighteen nonfiction books and has worked as a newspaper editor, magazine writer, TV and radio commentator, and reporter for The New York Times covering a variety of topics. His two most recent books, Blood and Treasure: Daniel Boone and the Fight for America's First Frontier (with Bob Drury) and Lightning Down: A World War II Story of Survival, were national bestsellers. Other bestselling titles include Dodge City, The Heart of Everything That Is, Tombstone, and The Last Stand of Fox Company. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

Why is this episode important on a show about toxic relationships? Because your doctor--and other healers--need to be empathetic, aware, interested, listening, and compassionate. Some are wonderful. Others, not so much. You need to find one that cares about all of you, not just the numbers, graphs, and medications. In your toxic relationship, have you ever been seriously ill or injured? What kind of care did you get at home? That's a big moment, isn't it, when you realize that the toxic person can't be bothered with you, or take you seriously? How does your doctor behave? Dr. Hassan Tetteh had early personal experiences with trauma, and the impact on him directed his life's work. A Near Death Experience changed so much for him. Dedicated to The Art of Human Care™ (also the name of his book), Dr. Tetteh helps you see what to look for in a doctor, too. In a toxic relationships--past or present, there is often trauma from emotional abuse. You NEED your doctor to see, know, and believe what is happening to you. Emotional abuse takes a toll on your body as I discussed with Dr. Elizabeth Hughes in episode 189. Dr. Tetteh explains why you need to truly feel cared for when you need medical attention. Although he offers his acronym, L.E.A.R.N, for healers, it's a very good approach for all of us in our relationships. Enjoy this...even if it sounds a little off our usual topics. It's valuable! HIGHLIGHTS OF TODAY'S EPISODE:How an earlier life experiences change Dr. Tetteh's understanding of careWhy it often seems that doctors are more interested in time than patientsHear his Human Care TheoryWhat's up with toxic people's response when you're ill Why you need to find an empathetic, compassionate doctor OK, so I hope you now recognize why I invited Dr. Tetteh to Save Your Sanity. Don't be re-wounded by a doctor who doesn't really see or hear you. Your doctor needs to be a safe place to go, whether that is your medical doctor, alternative healthy professional, or therapist. Be good to yourself.RhobertaGUEST: HASSAN TETTEH, MDDr. Hassan A. Real talk: What’s more remarkable than being an astronaut? Being an astronaut dad, that’s what. Adam and Marc are joined by former astronaut Winston E. Scott, who shares stories of his NASA space missions, his tenure as a US Navy Captain, the crucial importance of STEM education, and his own unique perspective on raising children to be bold, confident adults. Also, learn the answer to the burning question on everyone’s minds… what the hell is Adam’s middle name? Modern Dadhood episode 32 opens with Marc and Adam playing a halfhearted game of “guess each others’ middle names” before alluding to an early episode of the podcast where Adam recalls his brief childhood desire to be an astronaut when he grew up... and realization that he wasn't cut out for it!The conversation pivots to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and its vital importance in school curriculum starting at a young age. As technology evolves at a rapid pace, many current jobs will be replaced by AI, while other new career opportunities arise. Critical thinking, a component (or perhaps a valuable byproduct) of STEM education, will be essential to solving future world problems. The guys tee up a recent conversation with a major proponent of STEM: Winston E. Scott. Winston is a former US Navy Captain, a former Astronaut, and yes, a father of two. Winston shares about his acclaimed career, his experience raising two children while continuously relocating around the country for his Navy career, how his family prepared for his departures to outer space, and how his personal philosophies on confidence and fear have influenced his kids’ interests and career paths. Topics of the conversation include: •  The nomadic lifestyle of a Navy pilot•  Aeronautical Engineering•  Instilling a sense of excitement and opportunity in our children (over fear)•  A new perspective that only comes from looking at Earth from outer space•  Winston's family's reaction when he was selected by NASA•  Spacewalking and Extra Vehicular Activity•  Space flight is a team effort that requires specialists across many fields•  What "critical thinking" means•  How can we, as parents, encourage our kids to explore STEM? [Episode Transcript] Links:Winston E. Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show

They say that being a CO of a warship is the loneliest job in the world. My own observations of my own two Captains are that is probably true. It doesnt mean that you have to be a delusional hardass, but it does mean that you have to make decisions that are in the best interest of the ship first. Believe me, the ships best interest was not always my own. Long years have taught me that I could and I did trust my COs to get it right. If Captain Conway called me tomorrow and asked me to do something, I would do it without question. The same applied to my Division Officer, Lt. Fritsch and my Master Chief, Joe Adamson. Why? Because that is the kind of leadership that those men gave me. Not mindless obedience, but trust. I was a part of a ship, and what was best for the ship, was ultimately best for me. A few days ago, the news was abuzz with the word that a US Navy Captain had begged to get his crew off of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the Pacific, which was being ravaged by the COVID-19 disease. The Navy reacted swiftly and relieved the Commanding Officer, and video soon surfaced of his crew chanting his name and cheering him as he left the ship. Depending on your political views, this was either a gross overreaction by the bad orange man who doesnt care about the sailors, or its a call for a Congressional investigation into the Navys decision which is clearly bad because sailors are dying. Theres an old saw that says that hard cases make for bad law. Navy Regulations are harsh because, at the end of the day, the Navy isnt a Yacht Club, filled with weekend sailors and retired Judges who play bad golf. It is a fighting force designed to break things and maintain control of the Sea Lanes of Communication (SLOC) in defense of our freedom and liberty. Anything anything that distracts from that mission is a problem. And problems have to be addressed quickly and directly. And like a Tiger King Documentary, dont believe everything that youre shown as the entirety of the story. First off, we will never know the whole story. Secondly, the Navy Regulations are designed to deal with these things. Navy Regulations 0802. A commanding officer who departs from orders or instructions, or takes official action which is not in accordance with such orders or instructions, does so upon his or her own responsibility and shall report immediately the circumstances the officer from whom the prior orders or instructions were received. Of particular importance is the commanding officers duty to take all necessary and appropriate action in self-defense of the command.

Habits 2 Goals: The Habit Factor® Podcast with Martin Grunburg | Goal Achievement, Productivity & Success – Simplified

"Fundamentally, these are the core four— the power four— that sustain us and direct our outcome and well being..." Martin opens with a story shared by the late, great Dr. Stephen Covey regarding the unwavering principles that influence the outcome of our life. If these are ignored, dishonored the consequences are severe. Covey shares a fabled (and apparently fabricated) story about a US Navy Captain being told that another ship is in their course and further, is unwilling to move. The Captain gets on the phone and demands the other ship to move or suffer the consequences. The importance of checking our ego, asking questions and "honoring" these four dimensions helps us to direct the consequences. That is, since the lighthouses (the principles are unwavering) we must "move" and honor them with our actions in order to experience the outcomes we desire. Dr. Covey's four dimensions are: Mind Body Heart Spirit Grunburg sees some overlap between the heart and the body and also the mind and so, insists that the social dimension (is missing) and is a governing principle in our lives that cannot be overlooked Mind Body Spirit Social Hear all about it on this Mind Bullet Monday!
