Full Text of Readings The Saint of the day is Saint Marguerite d'Youville Saint Marguerite d'Youville's Story We learn compassion from allowing our lives to be influenced by compassionate people, by seeing life from their perspectives, and reconsidering our own values. Born in Varennes, Canada, Marie Marguerite Dufrost de Lajemmerais had to interrupt her schooling at the age of 12 to help her widowed mother. Eight years later she married François d'Youville; they had six children, four of whom died young. Despite the fact that her husband gambled, sold liquor illegally to Native Americans, and treated her indifferently, she cared for him compassionately until his death in 1730. Even though she was caring for two small children and running a store to help pay off her husband's debts, Marguerite d'Youville still helped the poor. Once her children were grown, she and several companions rescued a Quebec hospital that was in danger of failing. She called her community the Institute of the Sisters of Charity of Montreal; the people called them the “Grey Nuns” because of the color of their habits. In time, a proverb arose among the poor people of Montreal, “Go to the Grey Nuns; they never refuse to serve.” In time, five other religious communities traced their roots to the Grey Nuns. The General Hospital in Montreal became known as the Hôtel Dieu (House of God) and set a standard for medical care and Christian compassion. When the hospital was destroyed by fire in 1766, Mère Marguerite knelt in the ashes, led the Te Deum—a hymn to God's providence in all circumstances—and began the rebuilding process. She fought the attempts of government officials to restrain her charity, and established the first foundling home in North America. Pope Saint John XXIII, who beatified Mère Marguerite d'Youville in 1959, called her the “Mother of Universal Charity.” She was canonized in 1990, and her liturgical feast is celebrated on October 16. Reflection Saints deal with plenty of discouragement, plenty of reasons to say, “Life isn't fair” and wonder where God is in the rubble of their lives. We honor saints like Marguerite d'Youville because they show us that with God's grace and our cooperation, suffering can lead to compassion rather than bitterness.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

A Chairde,As June heads towards July the distant beat of your drums is pounding out their rhythm. The marching season for all of the Loyal Orders is well underway and the 12 July is fast approaching. One July, sitting during yet another negotiation, into the early hours with Tony Blair the ratatat of Lambegs sundered the quiet. We paused as he asked if I knew what that was. Yes ,I replied that's the Orangemen.“Jungle drums?” he said.I am minded to remind you that the Battle of the Boyne was fought on the 1st July not the 12th. The date changed in 1752 when the English adopted the Gregorian calendar introduced by Pope Gregory. The war was part of a much wider European conflagration – the Nine Years War. James was backed by the English Aristocracy, by France and by the Irish Catholic aristocracy. William who was James's son-in-law and King of Holland, was backed by the English merchant class, by Pope Innocent X1, by Spain and Germany and by Protestant settlers in Ireland. At its core it was William leading a ‘Grand Alliance' of Europeans to curb the power and expansion plans of the French King. The Pope contributed to Williams expenses and when news reached Rome of the victory there was a Te Deum hymn sang in a “joyous proclamation of praise, thanksgiving and faith.” The Pope was front and centre of it all. So much for No Pope Here!  Bodenstown“To say all in one word, Ireland shall be independent. We shall be a nation, not a province, citizens not slaves.” Wolfe Tone On 28 June Republicans from across the island of Ireland will travel to Bodenstown, County Kildare, to stand in homage at the graveside of Theobald Wolfe Tone, the founder of Irish Republicanism. For those who know of Tone and for those who don't I want to recommend a new publication – Bodenstown: Honouring Wolfe Tone – A Pictorial History – which tells his remarkable and inspirational story and recounts the generations who have travelled to Bodenstown each June to remember and celebrate his life. This new publication profiles Tone and publishes photographs of many of the commemorations that have been held there. The first image of Bodenstown is of Padraig Pearse delivering the oration in June 1913. The Irish Republican Brotherhood had asked Pearse to speak and the event was chaired by veteran Fenian Tom Clarke. Both were executed by the British less than three years later following the 1916 Easter Rising.  Cupla Focal Eile.Another few words í nGaeilge as part of this column's contribution to the effort to use whatever Irish we have even if it is only a wee bit.  Here are a few more bits and pieces to replace their English equivalents.Lá breithe shona duit means Happy birthday to you.  It also sounds really good when sung by a crowd at a birthday gathering. Or even on a one to one basis. Try it. Use the same air as the English version. Tiomaint go curamac means drive carefully. Sliothar is a hurling ball. Tóg go bóg é means take it easy.

Poleg Orkestra in Zbora Slovenske filharmonije so nastopili še Mešani pevski zbor Glasbene matice Ljubljana in trije vokalni solisti. Prispevek Mihaela Kozjeka (Druga jutranja kronika, 8. 5. 2026).

Escuchar audio

What's up, dudes? Advent is here, and it's time to prepare for Christmas! Fr. Thom Crowe from ‘Tis the Podcast is here with me to discuss the differences between Catholic and Orthodox Advent liturgies! How long is each one? Which one omits parts of the Ordinary? Are they both strict fasts? We get into all of it! There are striking similarities and glaring differences. The sanctoral and temporal cycles overlap, and function as a weak analogy of the hydrostatic union. The West has more structural variation and variable parts parts, but the East has the stricter fast. We delve into the Mass/Divine Liturgy and the Office/Hours. After that, we tackle popular Advent devotions from both traditions. St. Nicholas definitely gets some play!Gloria in excelsis? Nope. Te Deum? Uh uh. Benedicamus Domino? Definitely! So grab your folded chasuble, switch it out for a broad stole, and chant along to this episode on Catholic and Orthodox Advent liturgies!'Tis the PodcastFB: @tisthepodcastBlueSky: @tisthepodcast.bsky.socialIG: @tisthepodcastFB Group: Tis the Podcast GroupGive us a buzz! In this episode we explore how Jean-Baptiste Lully, the towering figure of French Baroque music, met an unexpectedly grim fate: while fiercely conducting his own Te Deum, he stabbed his foot with his staff, refused surgery and died of gangrene. Along the way we follow his rise from Italian miller's son to court composer of Louis XIV, survey the evolving tools of conducting, and reflect on how a moment of hubris and misstep changed music history. A medal for a massacre. A Te Deum for thousands of deaths. A celebration that still shocks centuries later. On this day in history—11 September 1572—Pope Gregory XIII ordered Rome to give thanks for not one, but two "victories": the Catholic triumph over the Ottomans at Lepanto and the mass slaughter of French Protestants during the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre. Full Text of ReadingsThe Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Lectionary: 166The Saint of the day is Saint Marguerite dYouvilleSaint Marguerite d'Youville's Story We learn compassion from allowing our lives to be influenced by compassionate people, by seeing life from their perspectives, and reconsidering our own values. Even though she was caring for two small children and running a store to help pay off her husband's debts, Marguerite still helped the poor. Pope Saint John XXIII, who beatified Mère Marguerite in 1959, called her the “Mother of Universal Charity.” She was canonized in 1990, and her liturgical feast is celebrated on October 16. Reflection Saints deal with plenty of discouragement, plenty of reasons to say, “Life isn't fair” and wonder where God is in the rubble of their lives. We honor saints like Marguerite because they show us that with God's grace and our cooperation, suffering can lead to compassion rather than bitterness. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Matins is a bit of a tough one. The invitatory stays the same, so you get the hang of that. The responsories have a bit of variation and in Lent where the Te Deum is not said and instead there's a third responsory, “Felix namquam”. I'm singing the one from the Baronius Press book, which comes from Hartker's Nocturnale. But here is Matins for Sunday, Monday and Thursday from Septuagesima Sunday through to Holy Wednesday or Holy Saturday if you're praying in private.I've included the optional ending in case you don't go straight into Lauds. Feel free to skip this if you have Lauds queued up ready to roll. Hopefully your podcast app allows you to do this.Booklets in PDF available: littleoffice.brandt.id.auSupport this channel, either via Substack or Buy Me a Coffee Get full access to Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary at littleoffice.substack.com/subscribe

Very similar to the last two posts, just subbing out the Psalms for the 3rd Nocturn. This recording was plagued by bird noises. First take it was Sulphur Crested Cockatoos, second take my voice was audibly much more tired and one chicken was hanging around, making her presence felt. So here you can hear one psalm from the first take and two psalms from the second take and you might guess which is which.Matins is a bit of a tough one. Full Text of ReadingsSaturday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 364The Saint of the day is Saint Marguerite dYouvilleSaint Marguerite d'Youville's Story We learn compassion from allowing our lives to be influenced by compassionate people, by seeing life from their perspectives, and reconsidering our own values. Even though she was caring for two small children and running a store to help pay off her husband's debts, Marguerite still helped the poor.
