Send us a textToday I have my friend “Bob” Desroches he refers to himself as J. Robert Desroches (Bob) is a native of Dracut, Massachusetts, and has been involved in the Catholic Charismatic renewal since September of 1992. After a life changing experience that occurred at the annual Catholic Charismatic Conference held in Lowell, Massachusetts, on September 27, 1992, Bob has become a committed Christian. He was involved in his own Parish community as a lector and Eucharist minister. He served as a pastoral leader at his home Parish prayer group and was also part of other prayer groups that he attended on a weekly basis. Bob is a gifted speaker and teacher and has given leadership training to groups, teaching them the basics of a Catholic Charismatic Prayer meeting. He has given weekend seminars on all the gifts of the Holy Spirit to individual prayer groups. He is still involved with a Charismatic Prayer group in Florida that he attends every week, teaching the members all about a “Life in the Spirit Seminar,” followed by the gifts of the Holy Spirit.Bob's first book was You'll Never Be Alone, the second was My Journey with the Spirit, the third was Why Be Charismatic?, and the fourth is Miracles Do Happen. His next book will be Scripture Quotes: The Key to Life. He is always willing to share his testimony to whomever cares to listen. The witness of his conversion is a powerful form of evangelization and brings hope to many people. When he witnesses his inner conversion, it is done in the “Spirit of Faith.”Remember to reach out to your doctor prior to getting sober. Be sure to connect with Busy Living Sober! Today is Part 2 of my interview with Virginia DesRoches. If you missed the first part, Episode 187, I suggest going back and listening to that one first! Virginia DesRoches and John Foran are the dynamic couple and trailblazing visionaries behind Ironwood Studio, an all-encompassing firm that seamlessly merges construction and interior design along the South Coast of MA. Rooted in strong family values, they have earned a robust reputation for their work in designing, building, and renovating family homes from floor plans to furnishings of extraordinary quality and character. Drawing inspiration from the beauty of nature, their designs always blend modern and rustic elements, creating a luxurious and welcoming atmosphere ideal for family living. Their dedication to their craft has been recognized in publications such as The Boston Globe, DIY Network, and The Nest. Virginia emailed me recently about a new build she had just recently completed. Her goal was to share her mistakes, which she calls rookie mistakes, with all the designers listening so they could learn the lessons that she experienced throughout this project. There was so much value in our conversation that we split it into two episodes! So, today, we are going to dive further into what I call, teachable moments, and she calls rookie mistakes. Everything from understanding what's in the proposals that the contractors present and do they cover everything to how to manage a project site book, how to develop and present flat fees to a client, and ultimately, how she plans to implement these lessons in her next projects so that she doesn't make the same mistakes again. Virginia has free resource for you here: https://www.ironwoodstudio.co/free-resources called "The Ironwood Dream Home Guide Book." It includes everything you need to know when preparing for your New Build. We all make mistakes; I make plenty of them! The entire purpose of this podcast is for designers to learn from the mistakes of others. My guest today is Virginia DesRoches who is here today to talk about some of the rookie mistakes she has made and the lessons she learned from them. When Virginia and I first met in my course, Interior Designers Guide to Construction Management, she shared a large new build she was working on, and couple of weeks ago she emailed me to tell me the job was finished and that while it ended well, she encountered a lot of what she called, rookie mistakes along the way. She thought other designers could also learn from them and wanted to share the high's and low's of this project. The value in what Virginia shares is extensive, and so today is Part 1, where we cover cover setting fee structures, the details in making selections, permitting, and factoring in things often forgotten about, such as weather and then how to best work with new trades on a project. Virginia has free resource for you here: https://www.ironwoodstudio.co/free-resources called "The Ironwood Dream Home Guide Book." Today we had the honor of hosting Reginald DesRoches, President of Rice University, in Veriten's offices at the Ion. Reggie assumed the role of President in July 2022, after previously serving as Rice's Provost and the Dean of the Engineering School. Additionally, Reggie serves as a professor of civil and environmental engineering, and as a professor of mechanical engineering. Before his tenure at Rice, Reggie was Chair of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Rice University is an essential part of Houston's community and is home to 8,600 plus students and more than 900 faculty members. As we discuss, Rice Management Company is responsible for developing the Ion District in partnership with the City of Houston, where Veriten first started in January 2022. We were thrilled to visit with Reggie and hear his perspectives on the world, energy, the Ion, and the current educational landscape. In our conversation, we explore how AI will change the educational landscape and future career prospects for the next class of students starting at Rice, changes in demand for top areas of study, the vital role energy plays in economic development and healthcare, student attitudes towards energy, and the importance of exposing students to real-world energy access challenges in developing countries or rural areas. Reggie shares Rice's efforts to increase study abroad participation to 50% to broaden student perspectives, the current generation's eagerness to address global issues and make a difference, Rice's University-Industry partnerships including Woodside and the Texas Medical Center, the role of industry in providing practical constraints and scalability considerations to university research, and the surge in industry interest Rice received following the Woodside partnership announcement (linked here). We discuss Rice's goals for the Ion District and the potential for Houston to grow into a leading technology and innovation center, Houston's unique advantages, Rice's strategic plan for the next ten years, the balance between STEM and non-STEM disciplines at Rice, navigating research funding, planning for new facilities, the competitive landscape for hiring new faculty, and the importance of having global representation on campus. We ask Reggie for his perspective on the evolving role of university presidents, and as you'll hear, the job is anything but easy. The Economist article Reggie references is linked here. We covered a great deal of territory and can't thank Reggie enough for joining us today. Mike Bradley kicked off the show by highlighting that the 10-year bond yield is hovering at ~4.25%. He noted this week's economic calendar isn't overly robust. WTI price has rallied ~$4/bbl over the last 4-5 days, trading back above $81/bbl and surpassing its 50/100/200-day moving averages. Whether you're looking at 3mo, 6mo, 12mo or 24mo timeframe, WTI price has been relatively rangebound over those respective timeframes averaging ~$80/bbl and with crude oil volatility trading at multi-year lows. Broader equities continue to be driven by the recent drop in bond yields and a continuation of the strong AI/Tech rally. Broader equity market breadth continues to be extremely narrow, with the top six AI/Tech stocks (APPL, MSFT, NVDA, GOOG, AMZN & META) seeing their combined market-cap increase by $5T over the last year, pushing their combined market-cap to ~33% of the S&P 500. Jeff Tillery expanded on Mike's thoughts on volatility, adding that the focus on commodity volatility will likely expand. We hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did! Thank you again to Reggie for stopping by. Go Owls!

Reginald DesRoches, the eighth president of one of the most prestigious universities in the country, recently completed the first year of his historical post. The Haitian-native is the first Black president, the first immigrant and the first engineer to ever lead Rice since the founding of the university in 1921. But the history of Rice is a bit complicated and very controversial. Join I SEE U as host Eddie Robinson chats candidly with the Chief Executive Officer of Rice, Dr. Reginald DesRoches. A university that once banned Black undergraduates from attending, DesRoches shares his feelings about leading an institution whose founder, William Marsh Rice, profited from the slave trade. With DesRoches establishing the first Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Rice, a private institution, he offers up his perspective as to why state lawmakers are looking to dismantle those same offices at public universities across Texas. Plus, we learn more about his mentor—the former president of Prairie View A&M University, Dr. Ruth Simmons—and the role she's played in his career since his arrival at Rice in 2017. A pioneer in higher education herself, Simmons now serves as the President's Distinguished Fellow and Advisor at Rice.
In the 1960s, the world's attention was focused on a nail-biting race against time: Fifty countries contributed nearly a billion dollars to save a dozen ancient Egyptian temples, built during the height of the pharaohs' rule, from drowning in the floodwaters of the gigantic new Aswan High Dam. But the massive press coverage of this unprecedented rescue effort completely overlooked the gutsy French archaeologist who made it all happen. Without the intervention of Christiane Desroches-Noblecourt, the temples—including the Metropolitan Museum's Temple of Dendur—would be at the bottom of a huge reservoir. It was a project of unimaginable size and complexity that required the fragile sandstone temples to be dismantled, stone by stone, and rebuilt on higher ground. A willful, real-life version of Indiana Jones, Desroches-Noblecourt refused to be cowed by anyone or anything. As a member of the French Resistance in World War II she had survived imprisonment by the Nazis; in her fight to save the temples, she defied two of the most daunting leaders of the postwar world, Egyptian President Abdel Nasser and French President Charles de Gaulle. As she told one reporter, “You don't get anywhere without a fight, you know.” Yet Desroches-Noblecourt was not the only woman who played a crucial role in the endeavor. The other was Jacqueline Kennedy, America's new First Lady, who persuaded her husband to call on Congress to help fund the rescue effort. After a century and a half of Western plunder of Egypt's ancient monuments, Desroches-Noblecourt had done the opposite. She had helped preserve a crucial part of its cultural heritage and, just as important, made sure it remained in its homeland.Today's guest is Lynne Olson, author of “Empress of the Nile: The Daredevil Archeologist Who Saved Egypt's Ancient Temples.” We discuss why Christiane Desroches is something of a real-life female Indiana Jones, what tactics Desroches used to save Egyptian antiquities from flooding in the Nile basin, and how important her intervention was to the effort.

Bon matin !
In this episode Dr. V talks to Dr. Cait DesRoches, executive director of the OpenNotes Project. OpenNotes is an international movement that's making health care more transparent by inviting doctors, nurses and therapists to share their notes with their patients. The conversation centers on the Cures Rule, a federal mandate requiring hospitals to share notes with patients. In the realm of advocacy and academics Dr. DesRoches is an absolute powerhouse. Listen as she offers insight on this historical law and what it could mean for doctors, hospitals and, most importantly, patients. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
