Mile High Chiro Podcast

Chiropractic care touches every aspect of life.  It impacts body, mind, and spirit.  The very special guest on this episode of The Mile High Podcast is Dr. Liza Cherubini, who has made the spiritual aspect of chiropractic a very large part of her practice. Dr. Liza is the owner of Cherubini Chiropractic Red Bank, New Jersey Red Bank, NJ. She has dedicated her life to serving people at the highest level through vitalistic chiropractic care. A vitalistic approach to chiropractic looks at the entire person and not merely the parts or symptoms. This approach allows for a greater healing and consciousness shift to occur with chiropractic adjustments.   Dr. Liza graduated from Life Chiropractic College West in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2011. Her understanding of chiropractic was greatly influenced by the teachings of Dr. Pasquale Cerasoli before entering chiropractic school, and later by Dr. Sue Brown who evolved the chiropractic profession with the development of the approach Bio Geometric Integration (BGI). Other prominent influences in her career include Dr. Arno Burnier, Dr. Katina Manning, and Dr. Donna Mutter. Dr. Liza has been a yoga practitioner for 25 years, and continues to study yoga and chiropractic philosophy. She speaks and teaches to chiropractors across the country. Her focus and intention with chiropractic adjustments is on uniting the spiritual and physical bodies, so that each person can realize their potential for healing and evolution. On this podcast you'll hear about: •    Liza's purpose in chiropractic •    What inspired her to focus more on the spiritual aspect of chiropractic •    Why it is important to connect the spiritual and the physical •    How do to integrate spirituality into your practice •    And MUCH more! This year's Mile High Weekend is going to be tremendous, and Dr. Liza may be one of the presenters who will bless you September 26th – 29th in Denver!  For now, enjoy listening to her wisdom and expertise on the podcast. SynopsisOh, to have been in Vienna on today's date in 1785! Wolfgang Mozart had just finished a new piano concerto a week earlier and quite likely performed it himself for the first time as an intermission feature at a performance of the oratorio Ester, by Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf, conducted by Antonio Salieri. Now wouldn't that have made for a good scene in the movie Amadeus?Fast forward 11 years for another memorable concert at the Theater an der Wien, when on today's date in 1806, it was Beethoven's turn to premiere one of his new concertos in Emanuel Schikaneder's Viennese theater. Alongside works of Mozart, Méhul, Cherubini and Handel, Beethoven's Violin Concerto was introduced to the world, with Franz Clement as the soloist.Beethoven's friend Czerny recalled that Clement's performance was greeted with “noisy bravos.”But a contemporary Viennese music critic wrote: “While there are beautiful things in the concerto … the endless repetition of some commonplace passages could prove fatiguing.” The reviewer's final assessment? “If Beethoven pursues his present path, it will go ill with him and the public alike.”Music Played in Today's ProgramWolfgang Mozart (1756-1791) Piano Concerto No. 22; Mitsuko Uchida, piano; English Chamber Orchestra; Jeffrey Tate, cond. It is hard to believe that it's already been 13 years since the death of Shirley Verrett on November 5, 2010. It has also already been four years since I did a pair of episodes on this extraordinary and beloved artist, and this anniversary gives me the perfect excuse to revisit the work of this mezzo-soprano turned soprano who more than any other singer in my experiences (even soon-to-be birthday girl Maria Callas) was capable of singing nearly anything. This type of singer is sometimes referred to as a soprano sfogato (or a falcon, after the 19th century French mezzo-cum-soprano Cornélie Falcon. Since Verrett, like Falcon, sang both mezzo and soprano, I instead coin the term falcon sfogatissima to describe her vocal magic. This episode is chock full of examples of Verrett's impassioned yet technically-grounded vocalism, from art songs by Brahms and Pasatieri to operatic roles by Handel, Gluck, Cherubini, Bellini, Puccini, and Verdi (including both soprano and mezzo roles in Aida and the Messa da Requiem and soprano roles in Ballo in Maschera, Macbeth, Don Carlo, and Otello). I close the episodes with Verrett's astonishing but limited forays into the German operatic repertoire. Her collaborators on this episode include conductors Seiji Ozawa, Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink, Zubin Mehta, Eve Queler, Georges Prêtre, Sarah Caldwell, and the late Kenneth Montgomery; and fellow operatic greats Sherrill Milnes, Luciano Pavarotti, James McCracken, Robert Massard (last week's featured artist), and her frenemy the late Grace Bumbry. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Brahms breaks the rules

Synopsis The first Piano Concerto by Brahms received its premiere public performance on today's date in 1859 with the Hanover Court Orchestra under the direction of Brahms's close friend Joseph Joachim and its 25-year composer as soloist. That first night audience had never heard anything quite like it. In his biography of Brahms, Jan Swafford describes what was expected of a piano concerto back then, namely “virtuosic brilliance, dazzling cadenzas, not too many minor keys, [and nothing] too tragic.” “To the degree that these were the rules,” writes Swafford, “[Brahms] violated every one of them.” His concerto opens with heaven-storming drama, continues with deeply melancholic lyricism, and closes with something akin to hard-fought, even grim, triumph. Rather than a display of flashy virtuosity, Brahms's concerto comes off as somber and deeply emotional. A second performance, five days later in Leipzig, was hissed. "I am experimenting and feeling my way,” Brahms wrote to his friend Joachim, adding, "all the same, the hissing was rather too much." Now regarded a dark Romantic masterpiece, it's important to remember how long it took audiences to warm to Brahms' music. The American composer Elliott Carter recalled that even in the 1920s, Boston concert goers used to quip that the exit signs meant, "This way in case of Brahms." Nate & I sat down at my basement bar in Virginia to connect. We never had the opportunity to serve together in the same unit, so we took advantage of a conference to set time aside to record this interview. Initially, he was reluctant because he thought he had nothing to offer the audience. I knew better. His views on agency, mindset, and leaving it all out on the field are crucial takeaways. Our conversation covers topics spanning family readiness, the natural tension between the information & intelligence warfighting functions, and the need to tailor the application of leadership fundamentals to distinct audiences. We nerd out about science fiction, whisky, artificial intelligence & of course, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu! As I roll out exclusive content, I've determined Patreon as the easiest way to engage with the audience. Synopsis To some it seemed an act of sheer madness for a String Quartet to announce in the 1970s that it would not perform the classic repertory of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, but devote itself instead to music written after 1900, especially newly-composed works. But the Kronos Quartet has proved the skeptics wrong. Founded in Seattle in 1973, and reformed in San Francisco five years later, the Kronos Quartet has established itself as a major player on the international music scene, premiering hundreds of new works by living composers. On today's date in 1984, the Kronos Quartet was at the Kukmo Music Festival in Finland, where they gave the premiere performance of the 5th String Quartet of the Finnish composer, Aulis Sallinen, subtitled “Pieces of Mosaic.” This quartet is a string of 16 short fragments, and, as the composer explained, reflected a pessimistic view of world affairs, circa 1984, the ominously Orwellian year of its composition. “It seems somehow crazy,” said Sallinen, “that a composer should create extended symphonic forms for the world we live in. This quartet is the kind of work the world deserves: one which is smashed into fragments.” Sallinen is one of the best-known Finnish composers since Sibelius, and in addition to chamber works like his Fifth Quartet, he has written symphonic works and a number of successful operas. Music Played in Today's Program Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) – String Quartet No. 17 in Bb (Quartetto Italiano) Philips 422 512 Aulis Sallinen (b. 1935) – String Quartet no. 5 (Pieces of Mosaic) (Sibelius Quartet) Ondine 831 On This Day Births 1670 - Italian opera composer Giovanni Bononcini, in Modena; In 1720 he joined the Royal Academy of Music in London, where one faction favored Bononcini's works over those by Handel 1821 - French mezzo-soprano PaulineViardot-Garcia; She arranged some of Chopin's mazurkas as songs and performed them with the composer in concert; She also wrote an opera, "La Derniére Sorcière," that was performed in Weimar in 1869, and a chamber opera version of "Cendrillon (Cinderella)" which was performed privately in 1904 1872 - Czech composer Julius Fucik, in Prague; A student of Dvorák's, he composed the famous "circus" march, "Entrance of the Gladiators"; 1894 - Dutch-born American composer Bernard Wagenaar, in Arnhem; He was the son of the Dutch composer Johan Wagenaar (1862-1941); He came to the U.S. in 1920, was a violinist with the New York Philharmonic from 1921-23, and in 1927 became a composition teacher at the Juilliard Graduate School 1933 - Canadian composer R. Synopsis It was the fashion in the late 19th century to decorate concert halls with the names of famous composers like Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. Of course, over time some composers once very popular fell out of favor, and many old concert hall walls included names like Cherubini and Meyerbeer, composers who nowadays are performed only on rare occasions. In Amsterdam, the main hall of the acoustically famous Concertgebouw boats a pantheon of over two dozen composers' names as part of its interior decoration, and, not surprisingly, a few Dutch composers are included in the mix. Most of the native sons so honored are probably unfamiliar outside of the Netherlands, however. Take for example Alfons Diepenbrock, a self-taught composer and conductor born in Amsterdam who lived from 1862 to 1921. Diepenbrock composed a small body of big orchestral works in the late Romantic style of Gustav Mahler, who was a close friend. In Amsterdam on today's date in 1906, the Concertgebouw Orchestra and conductor Willem Mengelberg premiered a work of Diepenbrock's entitled “In Great Silence – a Mood Poem based on an Aphorism of Friedrich Nietzsche.” This music sounds a little like a lost movement from some big Mahler symphony, and while these days the name Diepenbrock might not be as familiar as Mahler, maybe that's something we should work on correcting! Music Played in Today's Program Alfons Diepenbrock (1862 - 1921) — In Great Silence (A Mood Poem based on an Aphorism of Friedrich Nietzsche) (Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra; Riccardo Chailly, cond (live recording)) Royal Concertgebouw Recordings 97033

Synopsis On today's date in 1706, the German composer and organist Johann Pachelbel was buried in Nuremberg, the town where he was born some 53 years earlier. In his day, Pachelbel was regarded as an innovative composer of Protestant church music and works for harpsichord and organ. Pachelbel was acquainted with the Bach family, and was, in fact, the teacher of the teacher of J.S. Bach, and served as godfather to one J.S. Bach's older relations. Johann Pachelbel would be pretty much forgotten by most music lovers until late in the 20th century, when an orchestral arrangement of a little Canon he had written would suddenly become one of the best-known classical themes of our time. In 1979, the American composer George Rochberg, even included variations on Pachelbel's famous Canon as the 3rd movement of his own String Quartet No. 6. Like Bach, some of Johann Pachelbel's children also became composers, and one of them, Karl Teodorus Pachelbel, emigrated from Germany to the British colonies of North America.  As “Charles Theodore Pachelbel,” he became an important figure in the musical life of early 18th century Boston and Charleston, and died there in 1750, the same year as J.S. Bach.
