Porcelain Predications - Preaching the lessons and principles of porcelain slabs

Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and even lowly podcasts are flush with options, opportunities, and opinions of how you should be installing porcelain panels or what tools you should buy with your money. How do you find the right fit to fill your needs on the job? What are the critical tools you absolutely need to buy to be effective with porcelain slabs? For Beno J. Gundlach's John Roberts, knowing the industry was about to change meant he needed to find ways for his 40-some years of experience to be best used for those coming up in the ranks. As a CTEF evaluator for CTI tests, and someone I have personally known for many years, we thought it would be a unique conversation to see how the trainers and tooling companies have adjusted as the popularity of porcelain slabs has sky rocketed the last few years. What changes in tools are coming, what has he seen in the earlier trainings from the NTCA, and what does he hope installers learn before jumping onto their first job? Give a listen to John as we go through the industry at large.

It's been a whirlwind of a week chez Gundlach and I find myself at the end of it without a new episode ready to post. In addition to that, we are already halfway through Pride Month and I realized this morning that I had no new queer material up my sleeve. So I'll tell you what I'm gonna do: I am going to get to work on a brand new episode which will post sometime early next week. But in the meantime, I'm going to do my own Listener's Favorite episode, one which I posted during the very first season of Countermelody, a wondrous compilation entitled “Sisters in Sappho.” It features not only two of my favorite mezzos of all time (Tatiana Troyanos and Brigitte Fassbaender – both of whom happen to have been lesbians); but also a sampling of the key figures in the Women's Music Movement of the 1970s, including Meg Christian, Cris Williamson, Margie Adam, Holly Near, and Deidre McCalla. In celebrating these pop icons, I also pay tribute to those who, in turn, paved the way for them, including icons Janis Ian, Dusty Springfield, and Ronnie Gilbert, as well as tipping my hat to two of the queer Black singers (Toshi Reagon, Meshell Ndegeocello), that followed in the wake of these women. We all owe an enormous debt of gratitude to these extraordinary artists, who paved the way for us, their musical and artistic descendants, at the same time setting standards that will stand the test of time. Vocal guest stars include Janet Baker, Ileana Cotrubas, Cecilia Gasdia, Nicolai Gedda, Margaret Price, Gundula Janowitz, Arleen Augér, and Reri Grist. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. Build Your Own or Franchise Your Dreams?   This week on She Talks Business, we have a new guest, Ashley Gundlach, president of British Swim School, a North American Learn to Swim franchise.  Unsure if you should build your business from scratch or use the support of a franchise? This episode will help you discover the pros and cons of owning a franchise, the flexibility and limitations, and understand the dynamic between franchisors and individual owners. This information is crucial for aspiring business owners, whether you crave the freedom of building something new or the fast track offered by a proven franchise model. The 80/20 Rule There is a popular principle called the Pareto principle, which is about understanding what 20% is driving the other 80%. When you focus on this in your business, you can see what is being done differently by that 20%. As certain businesses grow and scale in a franchise, the company must also develop and scale its processes as well. The support and processes helps to build a runway for all the franchisees that will grow after them. Managing Relationships When you have 150+ entrepreneurs with every personality type, it's a unique working relationship between the franchise and franchisees. By being transparent, franchises can have honest conversations about where their limitations are when it comes to supporting them. Whether it's a legal or structural limitation, there's always a way to compromise because the franchise doesn't succeed if its franchisees don't. Exploring A Franchise Any good franchise brand will follow a diligent process to educate a potential franchise owner about their brand. The process should be risk-free for anybody interested in exploring franchise brands. Throughout the process, you'll get a sense of what it will be like to be a franchisee of that brand and be exposed to the business's operations. If you're exploring a franchise process that doesn't feel like this, take it as a warning sign.  Signs A Franchise Isn't For You Connecting with others. If you have difficulty empathizing with others, you'll most likely have a challenging time inspiring your team and connecting with your customers.  Continuous learning. You must be open to learning from other owners and the brand to run a profitable business.  Grit and resiliency. Every entrepreneur knows you must be resilient when owning a business. A franchise is no different. Problems are going to come up that you will have to solve.  Pros and Cons of Franchising Pros You're not starting from scratch. You have a support team and mentorship. You have access to marketing professionals. You have a network of peers, so you're not in it alone.  Cons Franchises have proven processes, so you can't do whatever you want overnight; it has to be a collaboration. There is a lot of legal involvement to protect both sides, which can slow some things down. If you are considering franchise ownership, talk with people who are doing it, whether they are people who love what they're doing or feel dissatisfied. By speaking with them, you get to see the complete picture of what it's like and whether you can see yourself in those individuals. This gives you further validation of how to move forward after seeing both sides and multiple personalities.   What's In This Episode  The Guardrails of Franchise Ownership Traits of Successful Franchise Owners Benefits of Franchise Ownership   What To Do Next Visit lisalarter.com/e145 for all resources from this episode.

The latest installment of the incisive and perspicacious 'Tucker Carlson Uncensored' was released this past Tuesday, providing critical commentary on the declining state of our economy under the Biden administration as well as shedding light on the bewildering actions of the Federal Reserve within the greater economic framework. Tucker Carlson, known for his lucid and perceptive observations, delved into a dense topic within his recent monologue: The erratic decision-making of Jay Powell, current Chair of the Federal Reserve. Drawing attention to Powell's sudden about-face on the subject of interest rates, he offers a sharp critique of the unclear economic approach in these turbulent financial times. Carlson presents an interesting narrative: Our nation doesn't merely grapple with an inexperienced leader who is falling behind; instead, we are in the throes of a full-blown financial disaster. He raises the sobering thought that the Federal Reserve's bizarre rudderless navigation could be a frantic scramble to salvage the U.S. economy and not just the struggling Biden administration. The question that looms large in this discourse is, could our economic fundamentals be so precarious? Is the Fed actually scrambling around haphazardly, strewn in a sea of confusion, all in a desperate bid to figure out a way forward from this financial morass? Tucker considers these possibilities, providing food for thought and initiating wide-spread reflection and discussion. In the middle of all this, snippets of his enlightening conversation with esteemed American entrepreneur Gundlach offer an illuminating insight into our national economic predicament.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The stained glass community will gather in a confluence of energy, inspiration and excitement for Forging New Paths: The Stained Glass Association of America's 2023 Conference, held at The Hyatt Regency in downtown Buffalo, New York, from Thursday, September 28 through Sunday, October 1, 2023. In addition to 25 workshops, five tours, auctions, art salons, art openings, the Vendor Showcase, the Mosaic Marathon, and major networking events – SGAA will hold its General Session. For more information, check out SGAA's website for speakers, a full schedule of events, and more about individual facets of every part of the event on the organization's conference homepage.  General Session Each year during General Session, SGAA brings together speakers from around the world to speak about restoration, conservation, public art, history, and technology in the field. It is not uncommon to have roundtables to tackle emerging issues or panels of experts to provide clarity on how industry elements are being tackled across the country. Speakers and lecturers are chosen by a panel of peers for both their content and enthusiasm. The expertise of historians, conservators, and contemporary practitioners come together in a unique way to celebrate the enormous diversity of the entire industry. In recent years, additional efforts have been made to bring notable guests and speakers to the conferences that can speak to the partnerships glass work often requires, e.g. those in adaptive reuse, metalsmithing, masonry conservation, sacred places, fundraising, and public art. There has also been a great many collaborations within the larger glass arts community as it applies to architectural art glass – kilnforming, flameworking, lamination, etc – and it is always exciting to see how connections made at the annual conference push the boundaries of new work. Classes & Workshops Conferences offer a unique opportunity to learn both beginning and advanced techniques and are often geared toward the unique strengths of that year's conference host. SGAA tailored its workshops to nearby facilities and studio resources that are unique to this year's conference location. Says McElfresh: “We have been very fortunate to work with incredible teachers from all over the globe – leaders in the field who have generously donated time to share their knowledge with our members and attendees.” Mosaic Marathon The Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA) is the largest nonprofit mosaic art organization in the world—a vibrant and ever-expanding group of more than 1,200 members, including mosaic artists at all levels, mosaic aficionados, collectors, materials suppliers, and art educators. SAMA has placed renewed emphasis on strengthening ties with other mosaic organizations around the globe to pursue common goals. The Mosaic Marathon brings together members for a unique opportunity to create a mosaic in a cooperative, continuous, networking experience. The Mosaic Marathon creates a lasting piece of art that is donated to a local charity in SGAA's host conference city. As a not-for-profit organization, this is an opportunity for SAMA to give back to the arts community and create a lasting reminder of its legacy and mission. Tours & Field Sessions The history and appreciation of stained glass is inseparable from both its setting as an architectural element and the very nature of the material itself. For craftsmen and artists in the field to gain exposure to the vast living museums of stained glass, they must visit stained glass all over the world whenever they can. “Installations all over the world are our museums, our laboratories, and our classrooms,” says McElfresh. “Thus, when we come together as a group, we must take advantage of our travel and our companions to go and experience installations, to discuss them with our peers, and to investigate ongoing care and restoration concerns that affect us all. This is one of the most useful ways we can learn as a group.”  Nearly every SGAA conference includes at least one full day of site visits and installation tours. In addition, the organization has been known to schedule and participate in special travel opportunities both in the United States and abroad to experience as much stained glass as possible. The tours are almost always stand-alone events, which can be attended outside of General Session participation and are often open to the public. Auction & Scholarships At each conference, members have the opportunity to browse through tables laden with books, sample sets, vendor products, tools, and artwork from members. SGAA's annual silent and live auction at the summer conference is a major source of funding for scholarship assistance. Donations directly fund scholarships for professional stained glass instruction all over the country and beyond.  On exhibition years, work is donated to SGAA's live auction, which is an opportunity to collect autonomous work by any number of the group's talented members. On the Shoulders of Giants: Innovation in Stained Glass at The Buffalo History Museum, Portico Gallery, September 15, 2023 – January 14, 2024 This anniversary exhibition pays homage to skills honed over generations that have facilitated innovation in past and present-day Buffalo. Just as LaFarge and Tiffany pushed the boundaries of the medium in the 1880s, today's community continues to move forward, fostering innovation and creativity. This trifecta of exhibits brings together Buffalo's unique history and legacy with future architectural endeavors. Conference attendees have the opportunity to experience how glass is a part of the city's built environment, building momentum for the art of the future. Viewing opportunities include: The new Gundlach building at Buffalo AKG Art Museum and multiple new glass-related commissions being unveiled there this summer; Brilliance: The Stanford Lipsey Art Glass Collection at the Burchfield Penney Art Center; and On the Shoulders of Giants at the Buffalo History Museum. States David Judson, Judson Studios: “The world of stained glass is constantly evolving with the advancements in technology. Despite being an ancient craft, new and innovative methods are being discovered every day. These advancements present exciting opportunities for the future of this beautiful medium. We are thrilled to witness the endless possibilities that lie ahead.”  Camaraderie, Networking & Celebration Says McElfresh: “Year after year, SGAA builds on the shoulders of giants, sharing cumulative knowledge with one another. This magic is the result of providing space for the unplanned to occur: the intermingling of artist, craftsmen, business people and suppliers. They exchange ideas, have impromptu demonstrations, and socialize. It is the chemistry created by our shared passion for the glass material that keeps bringing us back together.” She continues: “At our business meetings, we not only attend to the business of the day, we recognize those who have achieved professional recognition in the field. We seek to learn what challenges may face us next. We are just as eager to hear from emerging professionals as we are to hear from the recognized experts.” Each annual conference ends with an award banquet where SGAA celebrates Lifetime Achievements as well as up-and-coming voices.  The Stained Glass Association of America is one of our nation's oldest trade associations. Now 120 years old, the organization is proud to produce one of the oldest continuously published art journals in the United States, in addition to providing over 1,500 professionals across the country including manufacturers, suppliers, and educators with programs, scholarships, accreditation, public education and services for stewards.  Says McElfresh: “SGAA is the advocate and ambassador for monumental stained glass art in the United States.”

The billionaire bond king explained that when the BTC price fell below $30K, its chart indicated that $20K “was going to happen quickly, and it did.” Emphasizing that “The trend in crypto is clearly not positive,” Gundlach opined: "I'm not bullish at that $20,000 or $21,000 on bitcoin. ***NOTE: There are 12 zeros in a trillion, 9 in a billion and 6 in a million. I incorrectly stated 18 per trillion in the recording. Apologies.***What Is A Yield Curve? The Treasury yield curve is a graph that charts the interest rate on Treasury bonds, notes, and bills versus their maturity (time until they pay back principal).Normally it slopes upward, from left to right. When you think about it, it makes sense. Bondholders demand a higher rate of interest to lend money (i.e., hold bonds) for a longer period of time. What Is An Inverted Yield Curve? What Is An Inverted Yield Curve? When the curve is "inverted," it is downward sloping from left to right, which means you will be paid less to hold bonds for a longer time. This scenario makes no sense for the individual investor. Why would you invest to earn less interest on a 30-year bond than on a 2-year bond? In most cases, you wouldn't.Why Does An Inversion Matter? An inverted, 3month to 10year USTreasury yield curve has had strong predictive power that a recession is coming. Typically, the recession is roughly 2 years out.A normal, upward-sloping curve suggests that the economic outlook is positive. Better times are anticipated, and as one would expect, it costs more to borrow money for the long term, and one receives a higher rate of interest to invest long term.An inverted, downward-sloping curve suggests that the outlook is negative or the economy is slowing. Is This Time Different? In September of 2018, I wrote a post entitled "Is This Time Different?" which asked, "Does A Flattening Yield Curve Predict A Recession?"Rick Santelli of CNBC interviewed Arturo Estrella of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Estrella stated that an inverted yield curve between 3 month Treasury Bills and 10 Year Treasury Bonds had predicted all 7 U.S. recessions that have occurred since 1968.Currently, the 3mos/10yr remains positively sloped; the 2yr/10yr and 5yr/10yr are negatively sloped or inverted and the curve all the way from 10 years to 30 years is almost flat. The 2yr/10yr inversion has been less accurate at predicting a recession than the 3mos/10yr spread. What Are The Bond Gurus Saying?Mohamed El-Erian - AllianzStagflation is the baseline. This is the time to take some chips off the table.Jeff Gundlach - DoubleLine - “The New Bond King”Right on cue, the "It Doesn't Matter This Time" white papers are coming out, the DoubleLine Capital CEO tweeted. "Don't believe them."Bill Gross - PIMCO retired - “The Bond King”Bonds are definitely something to avoid. They (the Fed) are way behind the curve. If the ten year goes to 3, 3 1/2, or 4%, it will break the economy.50-100bps more from the Fed and we will see a recession.Inflation will be 4-5%.Bill Gross referring to Jeff Gudlach:To be a bond king, you have to have a kingdom. PIMCO was $1-2 trillion, Gundlach has $134 billion and is not growing.Central banks and governments are the new bond kings and queens. The term is somewhat passe.Bill Gross referring to Cathy Wood(Cathy Wood Is Taking Fire):She doesn’t have an excellent sense of value and when to buy and what to pay. She seems to think that down the road her theory will be validated. For a more technical discussion of the yield curve inversion please watch the following video:***NOTE: There are 12 zeros in a trillion, 9 in a billion and 6 in a million.
