The debut episode of the world's longest-running animated sitcom - 'Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire' - aired in the U.S. on 17th December, 1989; attracting the Fox network's highest ever Sunday night ratings. It was an instant sensation, with many contemporary critics remarking that the ‘dysfunctionality' of The Simpsons was in-keeping with other 90s hits Roseanne and Married… With Children, while conservative voices including George H W Bush criticised what they saw as its celebration of underachievement. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discover how it came to be that a Christmas special should introduce the series; explain why Tracey Ullman filed a lawsuit about it; and reveal how many colours are in the show's distinctive paint palette… Further Reading: • ‘Honoring ‘Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire'' (Vulture, 2018): https://www.vulture.com/2018/12/honoring-simpsons-roasting-on-an-open-fire.html • ‘Did Tracey Ullman Get Rich Off ‘The Simpsons'?' Most people don't think of themselves as creative. We say, “I'm not artistic,” or “I can't perform,” and leave it at that. But the truth is, creativity isn't reserved for the select few. It lives in everyone. It's baked into how we think, feel, dream, and respond to the world. The problem is that most of us were taught to shut it down. We were told to color inside the lines, follow the rules, and keep things appropriate. Over time, we stopped expressing the weird, wonderful parts of ourselves and started believing that creativity belonged only to the professionals. But performers like Jennifer Blaine know better. Jennifer is a comedian, improviser, and creativity coach who doesn't just entertain, she activates. Her shows invite people to stop watching and start engaging. Through playful characters, spontaneous interaction, and real-time coaching, she helps people bypass their inner critic and access the creative voice that's been waiting inside them all along. Because when someone is bold enough to play in public, it sparks something in the room. It gives the rest of us permission to try, to improvise, to be ridiculous, expressive, and alive. How do we use play and improv to pull out our true expression? In this episode, Jennifer shares how performance becomes a portal, why creative energy is always running beneath the surface, and how just a little bit of play can bring people back to life. Things You'll Learn In This Episode -The gaze that frees How does simply being seen without judgment ignite your creativity and confidence? -Performance as permission Why does witnessing play unlock something in you, and how can performers create the safety for that to happen? -Improvising with life We're all improvisers. So, how can you get better at dancing with the unknown instead of fearing it? -From grief to genius Can play be the most honest response to pain, transition, or loss, and how does it open doors to new expression? Guest Bio Jennifer Blaine is an actor, comedian, playwright, and character chameleon. She has been performing one-woman shows for 25 years. Her original writing, performing, and comedy delve into serious and socially relevant issues and provide audiences the opportunity to unite in laughter. Jennifer has opened for George Carlin and performed with Chris Rock and Joe Piscopo. She has worked with great actors such as Glenda Jackson, Christopher Plummer, Laura Linney, Joanne Woodward, and Paul Newman, and was featured on ABC's Philly After Midnight: Women Comedians. She starred in the animated series “Teddy P. Brains,” in which she played a precocious brainy boy, and has lent her voice to hundreds of voiceover projects. According to the Philadelphia Daily News “not even Sybil can compete with Blaine's cast of characters. Her comic genius is like Lily Tomlin and Tracey Ullman.” Visit https://jenniferblaine.com/ to learn more. What do you do when you're a talented corporate type who is diagnosed with a crippling disease which might put you in a wheel-chair?If you're artist Janna Garza, you file for divorce after 18 years: "He wasn't the guy I wanted pushing me around". But Kristi's long-time friend, who calls herself a "collector", and had moved from Texas into a plush corporate apartment in Chelsea, was about to discover her artistic side for real.It came about, as she says, through traveling, collecting vintage jewelry, fabrics, and oak treasures, watching people, and blogging about them. Now she has books - sometimes the design comes first, and sometimes the words. Tracey Ullman is very famous for her various TV shows and movie appearances, but before all of that, she had a Top10 hit in the U.S. and U.K. with the excellent song, "They Don't Know." We look into it and her subsequent career in this episode. The Last Starfighter is a 1984 science fiction movie that follows young Alex Rogan's journey from a California trailer park to outer space. It was also one of the first movies to feature computer-generated visual effects. Very fun. Follow and contact us at tapeheadspod.com. The struggle continues, as we're still trying to guess each other's favorite songs from the Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the 80s CD series. By 1983, the radio was bursting with new wave weirdos who never would have dented the Top 40 in the pre-MTV era. But suddenly acts like Madness, Nena, and Taco (TACO!) were scoring huge oddball hits. Culture Club was peaking, while Tears For Fears was just getting started. Spandau Ballet delivered a new romantic classic. Big Country turned their guitars into bagpipes. And even a young Tracey Ullman tossed off a gorgeous throwback pop single. Meanwhile some truly goofy (but still super-fun) acts kept a safe distance from mainstream success. (Casey Kasem never had to introduce "Earthquake Song" by Little Girls.) Let's sort it all out and try to score a few more points in this penultimate edition of our silly New Wave Game. Also: A visit to the ukulele festival with the Unlikely Strummers, the Somerville Ukulele Club, and a thousand more ukulele-wielding humans; Lindsay Wagner's bionic birthday; Kevin's parentheses; Kornflake's "eep" words; and Joe's (possibly successful) attempt to swoop in and win the whole game. Writer and Senior Vice President at The Black List Kate Hagen joins to discuss Nancy Savoca's 'Household Saints', a generational tale of Italian women in New York and the shifting influences of faith, divinity, and family in their day to day lives. Long unavailable and thought lost to time, an original print of the film was discovered by the filmmakers and has received a new 4k restoration courtesy of Milestone Films. The restoration is screening theatrically all across the country and a proper blu ray release of the film is headed to Kino Lorber in April. We discuss the work of Nancy Savoca, her recent string of restorations, and the position she occupies in the broader conversation about independent film of the 1990s. Then, we examine the film's brilliantly nuanced take on Catholicism and faith - how it manifests in the lives of its central characters, and how the film maintains a compelling balance of fascination and skepticism for the notion of divinity. Finally, we discuss the movie as a triumphant story of what can happen when film preservation wins out, and why there is even more work to be done on the front of preservation now and in the future. We are BACK in March Madness, where all of our movies have a true crime twist. This week we are covering, I Love You To Death. It stars a very bronze Kevin Kline as Joey, a philandering father and husband to Rosalie, played by Tracey Ullman. Rosalie is devoted to Joey until she catches him in the act, then she wants revenge and will look anywhere to get it. In this episode: we overuse heavy air quotes when talking about "fixing pipes" and "tool boxes", and Tamara forgets what decade she's in while Corinne explains the proper way to use a baseball bat as a weapon. The plot twist at the end of this movie has us tickled enough to say 'I Love You To Death' and we hope you agree.

More than thirty years ago, director Nancy Savoca premiered what the New York Times described as a “miracle” of a film. Household Saints was adapted from a novel by Francine Prose about three generations of an Italian-American family navigating faith and modernity in post–World War II New York City. The movie brought together an incredible ensemble cast, including Tracey Ullman, Vincent D'Onofrio, Lili Taylor, and Michael Imperioli, and told a strange and charming tale of fanatically headstrong women who were unlike any other characters to grace the movie screens of the 1990s. It all begins when Joseph, a handsome butcher (D'Onofrio), wins the stubborn Catherine (Ullman) as his wife in a game of pinochle. The first half of the film follows their relationship, which is plagued by the superstitions of Joseph's bitter mother, while the second half follows their daughter, Teresa (Taylor), who becomes consumed by a saintly devotion to a Catholic God. Last year, after a long and arduous effort to recover and restore the movie's materials, a new restoration premiered at the New York Film Festival, and introduced contemporary audiences to what still feels like a cinematic novelty. With a restored Household Saints in theaters now, Film Comment Editor Devika Girish interviewed Savoca and her star, Vincent D'Onofrio, to talk about making the film, how they infused it with their own Italian-American upbringing, and the daring mix of sex and religion that the movie explores.
Welcome to the Merry Month of Debts-cember!Part 3 - Your Holiday Bonus - In this, our first-ever Holiday Bonus episode, we proudly present our long-overdue appreciation of one of the most underappreciated British singer/songwriters of all time - the late, great Kirsty MacColl. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
Jude Rogers – writer, broadcaster, old pal of the pod - first heard Kirsty MacColl when she was nine and felt a connection ever since. She's just written the sleevenotes for ‘See That Girl', the best, most diverse and exquisitely packaged compilation of her music ever assembled, an eight CD box-set of singles, rarities, unheard songs, live and Glastonbury appearances, demos, BBC sessions and collaborations, along with an entire unreleased album. As Jude points out she wasn't overlooked, but all the things you applauded about her made her very hard to market. She wouldn't play the game. She refused to be fashionable. She was funny and honest and wrote about an unvarnished, real world which robbed her of a sense of mystery, and a lot of her songs were about fallibility and failure. Among the highlights here … … a long-running lyric thread that began with There's a Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis. … why what she wrote about men (and women) was so original. … her strained relationship with her father. … what Johnny Marr admired about her and the power of her “Elysian chorus”. ... why you'll never find another song like ‘Autumnsoupgirl'. … how she and Dave Robinson's hairdresser launched Tracey Ullman's career. … and David Hepworth's inspired idea for ‘In These Shoes?', the West End Kirsty MacColl musical.
